VanHorn’s - Review - Downtown Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"VanHorn’s is an upcoming restaurant from the fast-moving team behindBill’s Oyster,Bill’s Dips, andTeddy’s, all of which have opened within the last three years. This one’s a Downtown steakhouse that’s intended to be a bit more casual than the neighborhood’s fancier counterparts. They’re sourcing the beef from the famous East Coast butcher Pat LaFrieda, and the menu will also include seafood, burgers, and a braised lamb shepherd’s pie that we can’t wait to try." - Matthew Jacobs

Austin’s Most Anticipated Restaurant Openings, Fall 2025 | Eater Austin

"The third restaurant in three years from Berg & Sons restaurant group takes on a New York steakhouse (chef and owner Daniel Berg cut his teeth on the New York restaurant scene). VanHorn’s will offer a selection of aged cuts from New York City’s Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors along with braised lamb shepherd’s pie, seafood, a raw bar, family-style sides, and classic cocktails. The team aims to forego the stuffy steakhouse atmosphere and offer something for every price point, an ethos that extends to the wine list as well. Vibe-wise, expect old-school elegance." - Erin Russell

Small place. Big impression. I’m very picky about restaurants and food—and this one surprised me in the best way. The space is small, but the welcome and service are exceptional from start to finish, especially Kendall's great suggestion. The Dover sole fish was perfectly seasoned (balanced, not heavy). The steak tartare was excellent, better than the presentation. The bacon appetizer with sauce was great. Must try the creamy spinach! It's exactly what I wanted!! I hesitated to order the French fries—they’re a different shape—but wow, they were excellent. Homemade tiramisu melts in your mouth, and the espresso martini is dangerously delicious. 💡 Happy Hour tip: Steak tartare, prime rib sandwiches, and martinis for $10—absolutely worth it. I will definitely be back.

Perfect spot to gather with friends and family Downtown♥️ We started with classic New York cocktails🍸, the most amazing starters, including their thick slab bacon with their housemade steak sauce. Then of course, we got the Dry Aged Porterhouse from Pat LaFrieda, considered the gold standard of dry aging on the East Coast♥️the best of both worlds with a fillet on one side and a T-bone on the other. The sides, including my favorite, the perfectly breaded onion rings, complemented the steak superbly! The perfect ending was the best New York cheesecake I’ve ever had in my life, and it’s flown straight from New York City! My friends and I had such a great time! Andy was our server, and was so engaging and funny. The service was impeccable, and our glasses never stayed unfilled. I highly recommend this new spot in Austin! *Pro Tips ♥️ - we were able to book in on a Monday, usually it’s not too busy on the weekdays. - the books are filling up fast, so make your reservation today if you want to dine during the holidays🎄 - currently there is no valet provided, but we were able to park at the City Hall garage, which is just across the street. - also they take walk-ins at the bar, but it’s first come first serve basis

Joined some girlfriends for dinner on Vanhorn's lovely patio (in November, what a treat). we were prompt greeted by Tony and. He was helpful throughout the evening with attentive service. They were out of a few wines, but he was diligent in finding a Pinot Noir for us to drink. I wasn't in the mood for steak since I had a large lunch earlier in the day. I decided to try the vegetarian entree which was trumpet mushrooms on a fontina fondue. So creamy and delicious! The mushrooms were very meaty and satisfying. My friend tried the burger which she said was very rich and tasty. My other friend tried the miso fish and enjoyed her portion as well. On the pricier side, but to be expected for a Downtown steakhouse. I look forward to visiting again and trying more of the menu.

We had a fantastic meal at VanHorn’s this evening. From the service to the food, everything was truly top-notch. We sampled a bit of everything-from the whipped ricotta and oysters Rockefeller to martinis, a margarita, and a whiskey sour. Dinner was incredible: the porterhouse steak, off-menu Brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes, and the must-have creamed spinach, all finished with cheesecake for dessert. Highly recommend checking it out-everything was delicious, and we can’t wait to go back!

Brought my parents in last night for a nice dinner and it exceeded expectations. Food, phenomenal. Service, perfect. Atmosphere, intimate and cozy. Starters: Whipped Ricotta, Oysters Rockefeller Salads: Caesar and Wedge Main: Filet Mignon, Ribeye Sides: Onion rings, Creamed Spinach Dessert: Tiramisu Cocktails / Drinks: Whiskey Sour, Sazerac, Prosecco, Old Fashioned, and a bottle of the Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. The oysters rockefeller and tiramisu might be the best I’ve had. The steaks were cooked to perfection, and the sides were large and thoughtfully made. Jessica, our service staff, was attentive, knowledgeable, and gave great recommendations. We sat out on the patio which was a great spot for feeling like we were in the city but cozily tucked away. Absolutely will make this a regular spot, and can’t recommend it enough to bring your friends and family in town.

Came for my birthday. Ordered the tuna carpaccio and the beef tartar to start both were Devine. Really liked the use of the ceasar dressing as the binder for the tartar. The tuna was so light and refreshing(def getting next time!) for mains we got the cod , fillet, and the tomahawk steak which comes engraved?!? So cool. Everything was seasoned and cooked to perfection. You HAVE to save room for dessert the tiramisu is heaven and they come and give you as much whip cream as you want. Fantastic place cannot wait to come back!!

For a new spot everything really impressed and was better than expected. Came for our anniversary and will definitely be back. The pricing was fair and the quality was on par with pricier steakhouses in town that struggle to justify the cost. Also the cheesecake out of NY - fantastic. We opted for a mix of starters then steak and lobster and some sides. Portions were great and all we took home were some of the massive sides and a slightly eaten cheesecake slice. Just 2 notes for improvement as a new spot 1. The steak was seared just a tad too long. Still great but the bone in sear spread a bit too far into the meat blackening a few bites too much 2. Put a bit more server education on the drink menus especially the martinis. For a place opting to offer a separate martini menu our server didn't know basic questions or information around differences between the drinks Looking forward to coming back. Genuinely one of the best bang for you buck steakhouses we've had in a few years trying all the new (often overpriced) spots. The team at Bills has done a great job with the space.

To start, the hostess was fantastic! Gets better from there. Atmosphere was perfect drinks were great and while we only had some appetizers at the bar the food was phenomenal.

Yelp
First time trying this new steakhouse on 2nd. I was very excited for a steakhouse on the street I work! It has a very cosy feel to it and does feel straight out of NYC with the wood/red furniture. The cocktail program is perfect for a steakhouse and I really enjoyed my martini. We tried the house salad, NY strip, onion rings, and asparagus. The steak itself was a bit too fatty for my personal liking but we enjoyed it. The onion rings were delicious. I would definitely come back to try more on the menu!
