"Fish sauce and oyster sauce often give vegans anxiety when dining at a Thai or Chinese restaurant because those animal ingredients are difficult to detect and many kitchens don’t have vegan substitutes to give plates that kick of umami. Not at the cozy Vegan Plate, where you can enjoy classic dishes like red curry with a plant-based protein of your choice, like soy-based shrimp, and lots of fresh veggies without needing to worry." - Marla Rose, Eater Staff

Google
Absolutely love this vegan spot. It’s small but they have a huge menu and reasonable prices. Everything I’ve had here has been delicious and they have a ton of healthy options as well as more indulgent choices. The miso soup I almost always get to start and you should definitely try the sushi! Highly recommended!

I love this restaurant! The food is out of this world delicious and so fresh. All vegan🌱 !!! I went for a meet up dinner. The dessert was also delicious. #Veganuary

Google
Great variety of flavour packed dishes. The hosts are very warm and welcoming and provided us with lots of food options according to our taste. Dietary restrictions can be taken care of, the spice levels can be adjusted.

Google
Amazing vegan food, you can adjust your spice levels and all the dishes were extremely flavourful. The server was very friendly and they even gave us a cup of miso on the house!

Google
We had a wonderful family lunch here! The service was friendly and the spice level was customizable so my kid was able to order her dishes mild. Portions were large and the all day combos made for balanced meals that were tasty and not too heavy. The simple space was done up nicely with real roses and real candles.

I am not a vegan, but I do enjoy vegetarian and vegan food from time to time. We had fried rice (soy beef) and green curry (soy chicken). Green curry was very flavourful, fresh tasting, and rightly spiced (we ordered med spicy). Soy chicken was not bad either. The fried rice though, was a big "Meh".. Mushy and some sorta oily making it quite weird texture. The beef was also pretty weird texture. I'll recommend to have vegetarian options than trying vegan substitutes next time. Service was great as well.

Google
Wonderful delicious well spiced and presented. As someone allergic to shrimp the vegan tempura shrimp was great! Portions large and here is leftovers!

The Vegan Plate is a hidden gem for amazing Thai food, and the best part is that everything on the menu is completely vegan. Their curries are especially delicious—rich, flavorful, and perfectly spiced. Whether you’re craving a hearty green curry or a creamy yellow, you can’t go wrong. With its authentic flavors and 100% plant-based menu, The Vegan Plate is a must-try for any Thai food lover!

Yelp
I have been coming to this place for years and I've never had a bad experience; I have familiarized myself with the owner and she is precious, makes customers feel so welcomed. The server Kai is also a sweetheart, I love the staff dearly. The food is amazing, the vegetable drunken noodle is my go to. They have many specials that I thought I could never eat again: crab Rangoon, shumai. The chicken satay has a great texture and is one of my favorite appetizers. I always order extra cucumber salad because the small portion served alongside is never enough. I go to other restaurants and try their cucumber salad, it's never as good. They always ask for spice level which is something I know many would appreciate. The Thai tea is always a must have which is great; I never found vegan Thai tea elsewhere, but they have it here! I love going here because it truly feels like my money is appreciated and it has become like a second home to me. If you ever wanna give it a try, I may just be sitting at the table next to you. We love Vegan Plate, always and forever. Best vegan Asian food Chicago has to offer.

Adam K.

Yelp
When many think of vegan cuisine the associate it with tofu and unfamiliar tastes. Vegan Plate stands out with Asian cuisine that is tasty. Situated in a very small building the one room restaurant has a down home feel. The menu is fairly extensive and it is BYOB. We ordered the pan gyoza and the papaya salad. Both were good, and the salad was a good balance of sweet, savory and hot. We ordered the eggplant with vegetables, curry fried rice with crispy tofu and the jungle noodles. All were well prepared and very good. This is a good neighborhood restaurant.

Kathy C.

Yelp
The name is simple and the food is fresh & delicious. Some interesting salads: one with so many cashews that they cannot possibly be making any money on it! My favorite entree is the Green creamy Curry with Tofu and the freshest veggies ever. The vegetable soup has a very flavorful, but not overdone broth. I always love their delicious vegan blueberry & strawberry custard cups, complete with a crumble topping. I am always full when I leave here as the portions are generous. The place is small & very cozy. The owner & his wife are very friendly, inviting and quietly attentive. Super attentive actually. I am a klutz and spilled my drink. The owner was there in 2 seconds helping me clean up (and replacing my now drenched plate.

Megan B.

Yelp
The food was good until I found a long strand of hair mixed in with the rice noodles that I ordered. I am concerned about the sanitary conditions of this restaurant.

Bakita H.

Yelp
I got the garlic pepper with tofu combo. The sauce was good and I enjoyed all the flavors. The iced Thai tea is delicious and refreshing! The service was good too. It is small inside but comfortable.

Laura T.

Yelp
a really cozy small spot right on fullerton and clybourn, and the food was so good!!! it reminded me of Urban Vegan, another fav vegan place in the city, but Vegan Plate is a lot more accessible to me so i will be back more often! The sweet chilli gyoza was amazing, a perfect balance of sweet and spicy in the sauce. i also had the drunken noodle with tofu, which was the perfect amount of spice and the tofu + veggies were refreshing amidst that. the flavor was not lacking, there was plenty of flavor to back up the spiciness as well. service was pretty standard, i appreciate their attentiveness!

Selena L.

Yelp
Lunch specials are a solid deal! They include a salad, dressing, and egg rolls. Every now and then, it's a little too greasy. I recommend they introduce a pad see ew lunch option (I don't see it on DoorDash).

Matt B.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful all-vegan Thai food, with a high authenticity factor. We stopped in for lunch on a Friday around 12:30pm, and the place was empty. They have a large menu of Thai specialty items, plus some non-Thai dishes. You can customize the spiciness level to your liking, as well as adding your protein of choice (tofu, soy chicken, soy beef, soy fish, seitan, or just veggies; or pay extra for soy shrimp, soy pepper steak, or soy chicken nuggets). We ordered: -Papaya Salad (spicy; $12.50 plus tax). Wonderfully done, with a quite sweet sauce, but balanced well with acidity and lots of spiciness. The papaya was very crunchy, and was complemented by cherry tomatoes and crunchy green beans, on a bed of lettuce. Very spicy but wonderful way to start the meal. 5/5 -Red Curry with Soy Chicken (extra spicy; $15.50 plus tax). Rich red curry with great depth, cooked with a nice soy chicken, eggplant, bamboo shoots, bell peppers, and basil, accompanied by brown rice. Top-notch curry. 5/5 -Pad See-ew with Tofu (spicy; $15.50 plus tax). This came with perfectly cooked very wide rice noodles, as it should, with tofu and broccoli. The sauce seemed like a black peppery soy sauce that was very satisfying. Excellent. 5/5 Friendly and fast service, no frills environment. Decent value for money. Most highly recommended.

Jazabel C.

Yelp
Food was absolutely delicious. I ordered the chicken satay and the peanut sauce was the best I've ever had . The chicken and broccoli dish was sooo goood. I recommend trying the Tom kha as well. Everything was authentic and full of flavor. This is my new favorite Thai!!!

Ervin N.

Yelp
VEGAN SUSHI IN CHICAGO!! they just released their summer sushi menu and it was by far the best vegan sushi I've ever had! rockstar, spicy summer, crunchy roll were phenomenal!

Steve A.

Yelp
Had some good stuff recently at this all vegan restaurant specializing in Thai and other Asian food. It looks like it may have been some dumpy Chinese restaurant at some other time, for sure it doesn't look like a hipster hangout. Vegan Plate has a pretty big menu for a small place like this. Get drinks such as smoothies and boba tea, all non dairy. The food has noodle and rice based entrees. A good thing is tofu isn't the only meat substitute, so it gives a chance to get something else plant based. It has pretend beef, chicken, and even fish. These are mostly based of soy, but these don't have the softness of tofu. Also there's non dairy drinks. It's about $4 for Milk Tea. This comes with boba for a little extra, and they put a lot of boba in this. It was boba in every sip pretty much. We liked this, but the food was the main thing. It's about $16 for the All Day Combo. This is a good way to get a few things. It comes with brown rice, house salad, and spring rolls. Then you choose the combo and protein to go with this. I got the Cashew Nut with the soy chicken. The soy chicken seemed like extra dried tofu that was then marinated in a sauce. Had a pretty light spiciness to it. There was a good a duet of vegetables including carrots and mushrooms. Good enough we have to try it some time again. It has a lot on the menu for a small place. This is on Fullerton near Ashland located close to a few other vegan places, but if you like Thai, you should try here though.

Yelp
4.5 stars: One of the few completely vegan Thai spots in Chicago, and it was pretty solid! I came on a weekday for lunch and it was completely empty. It's a medium-sized space cutely decorated with holiday-themed, festive decor. The service was very quick and friendly. I ordered the Spicy Eggplant with Soy Beef which I really enjoyed! The staff noted that soy chicken and beef tend to be the most popular proteins ordered, and especially recommended the soy beef. The soy beef was tender and flavorful. The eggplant and veggies were also cooked very well: the eggplant was soft and tender and the veggies were crisp and fresh. I ordered it medium spicy and it definitely packed a bit of spice in there, but wasn't too spicy overall. It also came with purple rice, which was a little hard but good when mixed in with the flavorful entree sauce. Before the entree came out, they also served a small cup of miso soup, but it was a little cold. The dessert selection on the menu looked really good and creative, but unfortunately they only had one of the 5 options available on that day, so we didn't choose to get it. The prices were also okay-- not that expensive but also not that inexpensive (~$16 per entree).

Yelp
Love this place so much!! They gave us a complimentary small bowl of soup while we waited for our order which was delicious and sooooo flavorful. We got veggie fried vice with soy chicken and the tom yum goong ramen and they were both delicious. The food is so fresh and expertly seasoned. On top of that, the staff are so nice and friendly. Honestly have nothing bad to say about this place- please come here!!!

Emily L.

Yelp
I've been ordering from here for a couple years now. It's always so good. I often order with non-vegans and they love it too. If you're not vegan, don't let it stop you from ordering here. Our favorites are the orange chicken (sometimes sub soy chicken for tofu), pad see ew, tom yum soup, spring roles, cheesecake when they have it, pad thai, yellow curry, cashew nut, and beef and broccoli. So basically everything we've ordered. I don't do well expanding to try more items bc I love the orange tofu and pad see ew so much I don't want to miss out on it.

Ray B.

Yelp
Their all day combos are affordable and delicious. Portions are perfect. Staff is very nice and helpful.

Nicole Marie S.

Yelp
Vegan Plate offers absolutely exquisite vegan Thai food from here to Pluto and back!! I have ordered from Vegan Plate hundreds of times during the past six years, and I have always been overly pleased. They carefully read my order notes, and they often write beautiful love notes on my to-go bags!! My favourite dishes include red curry, green power salad, brown rice, miso soup, tom kha kai soup, tom yum soup, grilled gyoza, and shumai!! Oh!! And they sent me complimentary ginger tea when I had covid. Such a beautiful business with generous portions and glorious gratitude. ORDER FROM VEGAN PLATE TODAY, AND YOU SHALL EXCLAIM, "HOORAY!!"

Andrew P.

Yelp
I walked in here for lunch as a solo diner during my work break and during the week (a Wednesday) and the place was dead. They had a few take out orders though. I told the girl who greeted me that I wanted to dine in and it seemed like she had to check with the other staff in the kitchen if that would be ok; I found that to be a bit interesting. Either way, sat down, ordered a Pad Kee Mao (drunken noodle) plate with vegan beef, and it came out in a timely matter. I believe I got a combo cause it came with a side salad and some vegan rolls. I'd say considering it wasn't real meat, the place was pretty tasty. I didn't absolutely love the way the noodles were cooked. They were slightly tasteless, but not the worst ever. I'd say I would come back to try their other things, but this is absolutely a great option if you're craving Thai food but don't want to consume meat nor rely on tofu or veggie options only.

MC J.

Yelp
This warm ambiance small business deserves all the love, patience, and good reviews! The food is always fresh and tastes so so yummy. I recommend everything because the service is awesome, but Kai is very good at suggesting items when you tell her what type of food you're in the mood for! It's near DePauls Lincoln Park campus and not far from the Webster movie theater. I cannot recommend enough!

Christina B.

Yelp
I love their food. I usually love to get the fried rice, vegetable tempera, and orange chicken. Each of those dishes are delicious. You can't tell me that orange chicken isn't real meat. It's so good. And who doesn't love fried vegetables. The rice is different because it's purple but it taste Oh so good. Best vegan Chinese restaurant that I've tried so far

Mel W.

Yelp
I used to love this place and order delivery all the time. They increased prices significantly, which I understand, but the portions (at least for delivery) are way smaller - at least half of what they used to be. The food is good but not worth the price. Might be different portions in store but I won't be ordering again.

R D.

Yelp
Food is fresh, healthy, and has great flavor. Staff is very kind and helpful. I love the combo platter.

John B.

Yelp
One comes to Chicago for the pizza, usually, but when my target restaurant was packed, I was glad I had a backup nearby in my bookmarks, namely this vegan Thai restaurant, which was not packed, but should be. Ordering my dumplings with green curry was excessive, but I really like green curry and I rarely get the chance where I'm sure it doesn't have something in it I don't want to eat. My drunken noodles I ordered with tofu, which seems kind of basic, but I felt like their numerous meat substitutes were just going to be more processed and less healthy. I also ordered them extra spicy. Someone popped out of the kitchen after a bit, ostensibly to grab a drink from the fridge out there, but I got a vibe like they were checking to see if they had killed me. Don't get me wrong, I like the spice. Even a ghost pepper now and then. But these noodles delivered a persistent, furious heat, for which I had to drink a couple of bottled waters (which thankfully they did not charge for). They eventually brought me some sort of coconut bar which I did not ask for to cool me down, I think out of pity. It was nice. They had also brought a little extra serving of chili sauce on the side, which I did not finish, which is out of character for me. Anyway, it was delicious, but I would recommend that the average person should order with caution.

Tylor J.

Yelp
This was my first experience visiting this establishment, and I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Overall, I would rate it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Alla S.

Yelp
I love trying all the vegan restaurants and finally was in the right place right time to try this one. It's mostly a vegan Thai restaurant and was delicious. I especially loved the spicy seafood soup and the Japanese chicken curry was also delicious. For an appetizer I got the fish nuggets. Can't go wrong. The seafood soup had vegan shrimp and fish. Both excellent. It looks quaint to eat in but I was taking out. Not bad in pricing as it was really the same as any Thai restaurant no more. They were friendly and the food was really good. I would definitely like to go back and try more curry dishes and such. Parking was free and easy once gotten to but is a busy complicated street. Otherwise a convenient north end location and hours are typical.

Anonymous Y.

Yelp
Excellent Service, a small hole in the wall place. Highly recommend. Food was excellent, very fast. Seats were comfortable. Bus stop right outside so easy to go and leave with public transit. Ordered a single entree (red curry) with 2 appetizers and was more than enough food for 2 ppl. They did not have their desserts the day I went and mentioned they don't have it recently

Diva 4.

Yelp
Food is good, service is quick, ambience is basic, and I love the rainbow flag. Food is very consistent visit to visit. Fresh vegan food which is my requirement.

Sarah W.

Yelp
I wish I liked it, but I didn't. The eggrolls are good, so they got an extra star. Everything else feels like it came from a generic cafeteria. It's a super bummer because I need a go-to vegan Thai food place, but I have to keep looking.

Kika P.

Yelp
Great food and good price! Not fancy, but if you're looking for vegan food and convenience, this is the place.

Mina M.

Yelp
I love this place, I live an hour away but the food is SO good I try my best to always make a quick stop when I'm in the area. Everyone is so friendly. I like the vibes I get when I'm here. I always tell my friends about this place !! I can't wait to be back

Skye J.

Yelp
Vegan plate is PHENOMENAL. The vegan sushi is amazing and the service is wonderful. I would come back time and time again if it weren't so far away. Kai, our server, was so sweet and very accommodating to our requests. We were very well attended to and provided peak hospitality. They gave us complementary miso soup which was very nice of them. My party ordered the orange chicken entree, salmon nigiri, tuna nigiri, mushroom nigiri, crab nigiri, and two shrimp tempura rolls with inoki mushroom. Food reviews below! mushroom nigiri 10/10 - SO good. the texture is amazing and the sweet soy sauce is just... ugh. they make it in house and it was so good. Orange Chicken 7/10 - solid! the sauce was soooo good. very heavy dish though shrimp tempura rolls 10/10 - actually amazing. immaculate. god came to earth and blessed these rolls. what makes them so good is the house-made sweet sauce. seriously, get a ton of this because it's liquid crack salmon nigiri 6/10 - was very excited for this piece since i've never tried fake (or real?) fish before. i'm not really a fan but maybe that's because i've never had fish before tuna nigiri 6/10 - same as salmon! i couldn't tell them apart crab nigiri 7/10 - crab itself was super good! too much rice on the nigiri piece though. Definitely recommend coming here if you're a hungry vegan in the area. They have the only vegan sushi in chicago, don't miss out!

Barbara W.

Yelp
Tasty food, great variety, friendly and highly efficient staff and server. Comfortable surroundings and nice settings and decor, very relaxing meal. Found street parking on Fullerton. Hope you will enjoy as much as we did!

Grace W.

Yelp
Vegan plate is a great vegan Thai place with a huge menu with tons of options! I got their vegan sushi and it was some of the best sushi I've ever had. I got the un poco loco roll which was such a fun fushion experience with the Tajin seasoning and vegan crab. There's so much more on the menu I have yet to explore and I'm excited to go back. Highly recommend if you're in West Lakeview and want vegan sushi amongst other options.

Alina R.

Yelp
Delicious food, great service, love this place ! Big portions too. Would definitely recommend

Shimmy M.

Yelp
The food is AMAZING! And plentiful! Everything is cooked to order and they brought it out as it was made. So it was fresh and hot and oh so good! It's a true vegan Thai restaurant so you don't have to make alterations to the menu which is nice. We ordered veggie tempura, soy chicken satay, drunken noodles with tofu, and sweet and sour chicken. All of it was great and there was so much! We will be eating this for the next two days! No beer or alcohol BUT there is a liquor store next door and they don't mind if you B.Y.O.B. (We D.I.D.N.O.T. but that's an option apparently.) It's a hole in the wall but that's part of its appeal. The beanie baby display worked surprisingly well with the Christmas in May window decorations and the plastic table cloths. Don't ask questions. Just accept it for what it is. Delicious food, great service, and a hidden gem in Lincoln Park!

Veda M.

Yelp
Soooo freaking authentic!! I took a trip to Thailand last year and I've been searching for authentic food here in the city and I've finally found it!!! I took one bite of my food and it instantly reminded me of dishes I ate in Thailand. Everything was so incredibly flavorful and fresh!! We ordered the red curry with soy chicken, pad thai with tofu, green curry with soy chicken, drunken noodles with seitan, and fried rice with soy chicken. I would definitely like to try the soy fish and soy beef next time I come. My favorite was the soy chicken for sure!! I also ordered the Thai coffee which was good & I'm looking forward to trying the Thai tea next time! This restaurant is 100% vegan, which I loved because I didn't have to hesitate or ask any questions about what I could and couldn't eat on the menu. I brought a non-vegan friend to this restaurant and he loved it as well so I highly recommend everyone try it regardless of your dietary preferences!! The restaurant itself is very small so next time I order from here I think I will just plan on take out instead of dine in but I will most definitely be back here & probably next week lol!

Ali C.

Yelp
What a nice surprise for a takeout order. It was prepared in time and it was fresh, delicious and nutritious. The Thai iced coffee was cold, sweet and strong. The spring rolls and dipping sauce were unbelievably scrumptious. The best dish was the sweet chili gyoza - they are SOOO GOOOOD. Tasty, slightly crunchy on the exterior, soft on the inside, with this unbelievable sweet chili sauce. The spicy seafood soup (meatless) was medium spicy and just hit the spot. There were gluten "shrimps", mushrooms and other vegetables. We just return. It was fabulous.

Todd K.

Yelp
Always my favorite spot to visit! Price vibe and menu variety. Definable as a top tier vegan spot.

H P.

Yelp
Great food and friendly service. Restaurant was empty but i picked up my order around 4pm so it was in between lunch and dinner time. I will definitely be back soon.

Ervin E.

Yelp
Food is amazing quality, if I ask for something extra crispy or spicey they do their best to accommodate , tempura, papaya salad, sweet and sour nuggets ,

Pyone M.

Yelp
I love the food at this place, being a vegan and I still get to enjoy all the Asian dishes I grew up eating. The customer service here is excellent, it's a small place but the workers are very pleasant and always prepare the dishes in time. One time a new chef mistaken the type of meat I ordered, but they gave me store credit to receive the same dish at no charge for my next visit. I highly recommend anyone who loves Thai or Japanese cuisines to come for food here !

Gabrielle W.

Yelp
5 stars. Easy. EXCELLENT FOOD. God's plan. My girlfriend and I started off with the sweet chili Thai gyozas. Which honestly were divine. I would definitely recommend starting off with these. Then, we shared the drunken noodles. The noodles are super wide- Yum! Came with a lot of veggies also - mushrooms, peppers, carrots, etc. Lastly we ended with the banana spring rolls - YUM!!! Definitely get these if you are a banana fanatic. So good. (Came with 4). We dined in around 6pm and stayed for about 1 hr. The food came out fast and at a good pace. We didn't have a wait. There is street parking right outside in Fullerton. The restaurant is super small, so I wouldn't recommend coming with a group larger than 6. The music was good in my opinion very chill and hip.

Aly M.

Yelp
I loved this place. There were many vegan options and we couldn't decide on two dishes so we got 5 and they were all wonderful. The side of rice is better than any other restaurant rice I've had. Don't know what they do to it but it is really good and didn't even need sauce. I wish I had taken pictures of the dishes before devouring our plates! I will return

Alexis M.

Yelp
More vegetable options over the years and just a top place. The drunken noodles and tom yum are fantastic. Also, they have a gigantic vegan sushi menu, and it is incredible. Their combo specials are also great. The staff is super friendly and makes you feel welcome, too.

Irene J.

Yelp
CALLING ALL VEGANS TO UNITE AT VEGAN PLATE. Hole in the wall, family owned vegan restaurant. Cozy environment *FYI- tricky street parking *FYI- 1 bathroom located inside *FYI- easier to order takeout (seems to be the trend) W H A T TO G E T * everything! Literally everything is delicious with AMAZING portions But what I LOVE: F R E S H S P R I N G R O L L - filling, the peanut sauce is delicious and the seitan is unreal P A P A Y A S A L A D - perfect summer salad with again hefty portion sizes and good for 2 people. The vinegar dressing is so refreshing with the crunch & sweetness of the papaya O R A N G E C H I C K E N - had me like... "how is this better than actual chicken." It's a must have and the most delicious vegan dish I have tried to date. You won't regret it.

Maricar T.

Yelp
The food selection is not as large compared to their sister location a.k.a Urban Vegan but that was expected on my end because I did my research. Definitely a hole-in-the-wall place that I have passed by countless times without a second look. My friend and I came around 5 p.m. on a weekday and there was plenty of seating. We ordered spring rolls which we both enjoyed. The dipping sauce it came with was A+. Ordered the orange chicken which had an excellent texture but the sauce was more on the fruity side which I wasn't a big fan of. Also got the jungle noodles with grilled chicken. The flavor was well balanced. Note that they don't have a big staff here so patience is much appreciated!

Jessie S.

Yelp
This was absolutely delicious! The green curry (medium) was decently spicy and super flavorful. we also got the orange chicken and cucumber salad which were incredible. Definitely coming back

Karen B.

Yelp
Excellent. My highest recommendation. The food is clean and delicious. I've only done takeout. They've always been extremely kind and helpful with selecting plates. A hole in the wall, but don't make the mistake of walking or driving by

Ana S.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about this place. I just regret not coming here sooner for the first time. The place is small and you need to find street parking. our waitress was friendly and the food was delicious! I ordered the Ramen with soy shrimp; it was mind blowing. It is not your typical ramen since I could taste the coconut flavor in what I am assuming was the base of the broth. If you don't like the taste of coconut in your cooked food, this might not be the dish for you. What impressed me the most besides the taste of the ramen, was how much soy shrimp was in this bowl-it's was a lot. You don't typically get as much "meat" substitute without paying an arm and a leg. My boyfriend ordered the spicy eggplant and steamed Gyoza. Both were just as delicious. I am definitely coming back!

George G.

Yelp
Consistent good delivery. I have ordered the egg rolls and pad Thai several times now and it's always very good. The delivery is very slow, always over an hour, but the food has always been good so the wait has been worth it. I'll have to branch out and try more as this is a fairly narrow review but I wouldn't hesitate to try other things considering how good past orders were.
