"Vegan Hood’s fried chicken has expertly seasoned skin, but the pea protein faux chick’n underneath doesn’t taste like an afterthought either. It only gets better from there: The super cheesy mac and cheese is nice and gooey, and the greens are brimming with flavor. "It turns out, there are a variety of things you can deep fry, reduce to a gravy, or transform into a creamy bowl of carbs that have nothing to do with meat or dairy. Harlem’s Vegan Hood cooks soul food while making one big compromise—no animal products—and no others when it comes to flavor. Their food will make you sing its praises up and down Frederick Douglass Blvd. We’re not ashamed to admit that we mostly eat fried chicken to get as much crunchy, salty chicken skin into our mouths as we can. The fried chicken at Vegan Hood has marvelous, expertly seasoned skin, but the pea protein faux chick’n underneath doesn’t taste like an afterthought. It only gets better from there. The super-cheesy mac and cheese is nice and gooey with some smoky spice to it, and the greens are brimming with flavor. The faux meat has a velvety and chewy texture in all the right places, and it comes covered in gravy that we’d happily eat alone with their rice and gungo peas. Our favorite time to come by is weekend brunch, when you can drink some poptails (cocktails with popsicles sticking out of them) in a cheerful space covered in foliage and flowers. “Vegan” doesn’t need to mean you’re the sort of person who wakes up at 6am and eats a raw food diet. Sometimes, you just want some pea protein dunked in a deep fryer. Food Rundown photo credit: Vegan Hood Chix’n & Waffles A thin, crispy waffle and "chix'n" that's expertly seasoned inside and out with a slightly spicy, peppery blend. This is some of the best fried chix'n or chicken in a neighborhood with plenty of good fried chicken to go around. Mac & Cheese In terms of creaminess and cheesiness, this mac is on point. But what makes it particularly memorable is the special spice mix in the sauce. We're not totally sure if it's the same cajun house blend they use in some of their other dishes, but we need some mixed into any and all cheesy dishes we eat going forward. photo credit: Vegan Hood Flatbush Vegan Hood should get some kind of award for finally bringing plant-based oxtails into the NYC food landscape. These ones are made of a faux beef product and have a soft, velvetty texture—but the rich, salty gravy is the star of the show. photo credit: Vegan Hood Mami's Empanadas Stuffed with beyond beef, onions, and peppers, these are solid empanadas with a decently flaky crust. They're good but pretty standard, so you should order something more interesting unless you happen to really want empanadas. photo credit: Vegan Hood Golden Oreo & Chocolate Oreo Pudding We love both of these rich, super sweet puddings. The golden option has creamy vanilla pudding layered with Oreos and bananas, and the other uses chocolate pudding. Both are served super cold." - Neha Talreja

Excellent vegan Southern comfort food. Loved everything we got. Especially the fried chicken, it was super crispy even when it got cold and it was not very greasy. The gumbo and flatbush were great too very well seasoned and full of flavors. Service was quick and friendly. Sad we actually visited the restaurant on its second last day being open. Hopefully they find a way to return soon.

Really happy to see more vegan restaurants especially in this neighborhood. They’re helping to redefine what eating vegan looks like. The restaurant is small but has some enclosed outdoor seating which helps expand it. The atmosphere was cute. The staff was nice and service was great. Food came out with minimal wait time but it also wasn’t crowded when we went. Unfortunately I wasn’t blown away by any of the food. It was solid but nothing to rave about. We started with the empanadas as an appetizer. It was fried really well but no flavor, beet boring if it didn’t have the sauce on the side (which wasn’t my favorite flavor either). Their fried chkn was the better part of the meal, it’s textured soy using a wooden stick to mimic a drumstick, and was fried very well. I had the kale side which was really tasty but so little portion especially compared to my friend’s collard greens portion, which she said wasn’t that tasty but was filling. The mac n cheese was ok. Not the best I’ve had. And the pudding dessert was terrible. I tried the vanilla and it was lumpy, not smooth at all. The taste just wasn’t there. I’m slightly disappointed since there’s been such a hype but given the amount of great vegan restaurants in the city, I probably won’t be dining here again. That’s not to say it’s not great for others and good for the neighborhood. Just wasn’t the hit I needed it to be.

Love the food, love the service, love the vibes. It is definitely very busy on Sundays or at least on the Sunday we went. They offered us a table on the sidewalk which was fine until we sat out there and only felt the blistering Harlem cold. Fortunately there was a table inside and our waitress was so kind and quickly prepped a place for us. The food was delish! None of us our vegans currently but we enjoy vegan food often. We loved that this was soul food and Caribbean food. Also! The soursop limeade was a winner! Highly recommended

Staff was great- welcoming & helpful. The food was amazing!! Wish we were in town longer to come visit more times. The fries with rosemary were fantastic. Added bonus, arrived during happy hour and they have additional seating from the main dining area so just dropping by was no problem to be seated.

This place is cute. Dining area is a little small but the service was friendly and efficient. The menu options wasn’t elaborate but the food was good. The bartender made great mocktails and the decor is nice. I would definitely come back and would recommend people to give it a try.

Nice spot for tasty vegan dishes. I visited with my best friend for low key brunch. I ordered the "chicken" and waffles and my friend had the gumbo. We both enjoyed our dishes. For drinks, we had the mimosa tower- nice presentation though not as practical for people drinking alcohol, as we almost knocked it over multiple times haha. Prices were reasonable. Overall, I would return if in the area.

I was surprised how good this place was. Two people I was traveling with said it was the best food ever, but they say that about everything. The “fried chicken” was very good. Very nice texture and taste. Mac and cheese was as good as some of the best I’ve ever had, and I’m from the South. Waiter was very friendly. Reasonably priced, although the location is certainly in the hood. Will potentially go back if I am traveling with a vegan again.

First and foremost the customer service is top notch! Highly highly recommend the Shrimp Po' Boy and the Mac and Cheese! The prawns were seasoned/breaded and fried to perfection. I was not a fan of coleslaw at all but this gave me a change of heart. Serving was definitely more than enough especially with the fries (this could be a meal for two depending on a person's hunger level). Serving Great that there's another Black owned/Woman owned vegan restaurant to support!
