The Best Restaurants on Nantucket | Eater Boston

"Via Mare is primed for an elegant night out on the island. The cozy, wood-paneled restaurant is tucked into Greydon House, a historic property turned boutique hotel. Diners are seated in rooms designed to look like the library or sitting room of the original owners in the 1870s. Inspired by the Venetian tradition of shared dining, the menu offers small plates and craft cocktails using New England ingredients in loosely Italian dishes." - Celina Colby

We loved our dinner at Via Mare! We had 7 people and were able to make a reservation online which was easy. We were seated in a little corner of the restaurant, which is a beautiful house. The dining room had "living room" vibes, which I loved. The food was delicious - sharing small plates is perfect for a group in my opinion. Ellie was our server and she was AMAZING! She offered recs, coursed our meal, and was super attentive - always ready to see if we needed another round :) The food was so good - the bread with stracciatella was DELICIOUS, as were the oysters (2 different kinds which was fun), seasonal pea salad, the mixed green salad, the duck, and the pasta. I mean everything was delicious but those were the highlights! We will definitely be back when we return to Nantucket!

Google
Very cool space great date night vibes fantastic service- if someone tells you it's Italian Do not expect lasagna or meatballs- not that kind of Italian- but there are no wrong answers on this menu. Everything was fantastic. Great wines.

Google
Great restaurant and probably one of my favorites on the island. The menu is unique, shareable, and memorable. Great wine list as well. I can't wait to go back. The beans and gnocchi were delicious 🤤

Google
Absolutely terrible food and service. I’m not sure what the buzz is all about—maybe it’s good for drinks, but this was hands down one of the worst meals we had on the island. The food was extremely oversalted (and I’m someone who usually adds salt!). My boyfriend’s pasta was overly rich and greasy, and the Brussels sprouts were another heavy, greasy dish we definitely didn’t need. For a place called Via Mare, the seafood selection was surprisingly limited—just oysters and my salmon, which was from Maine (somewhat local, I guess). To top it off, our server brought out the mains before we finished the appetizers. I could go on, but I think you get the point.

Really enjoyed our dinner here! Food was some of the best we had on the island and our waitress, Stephanie, made the experience even better. 100% going back!

Google
Tasty dinner in a cool location. Some of the food feels rich (heavy & fatty). We loved the local salad, the soft shell crab (pictured) was great but a bit oily and the lamb has so much cumin it was almost not edible. The description does say lots of cumin and it lives up to that.

Google
We went here for a birthday dinner and everything was remarkable. They were able to get us in without a reservation and treated us SO well. Stephanie was so lovely and recommended the most amazing dishes. The food here was absolutely amazing, and I’ll be thinking about the Brussels sprouts and kale salad for a while. Would totally go again!

I normally don’t walk out of an eatery due to how bad the food is, but Via Mare was the exception. I ordered a breakfast sandwich (14 dollars btw) and the bread was STALE and tasted like it was bulk ordered. The cheese used was a cheap American cheese and the eggs were not seasoned. I’ve had a more gourmet experience at a Dunkin’ Donuts than Via Mare. Do yourself a favor, walk up the street and get a better meal somewhere else. The server didn’t even ask why the sandwich was left basically uneaten. Coffee isn’t bad tho.

Yelp
It was such a relief to come to Via Mare after such a long trip to Nantucket complete with 6 hours of delays from California. I will say that the restaurant layout was surprising to me - I entered through the front door and it's very dark and unclear where I was supposed to go to have someone seat me. But if you walk through the hall then there's a waiting room of sorts with the registers and someone came to help out so that's good. We were fortunate enough to be seated during the last night of restaurant week with a chefs tasting menu. Wow what a treat! We were able to try so many things and it was all very delicious. We got 8 dishes: deviled eggs, hot chicken milanese on Moroccan pancakes, a summer salad, grilled beans, crispy brussel sprouts, crispy taters, agnolotti, and the pesce del giorno. My favorites were all the vegetables and the hot chicken milanese - so many crispy flavors! Especially loved the slice of pickle on top of the spicy hot chicken - super great blend of spicy and sweet with the right crunch from the chicken and soft chewiness of the pancake. My only bit of feedback is that 1. It's pretty dark and 2. We were seated in the bar area and the bartender would toss what I think were empty bottles in the recycling and it was shatteringly loud for such a small, tight space. Otherwise, our server was a gem and we loved the food!

Yelp
We opted for the chefs pick tasting for $95pp. We weren't a huge fan of most of the items. They fluctuated between average and below average. The kale salad for instance was very very tough. The deviled eggs and chicken Milanese weren't great either. We did however love the gnocchi - the sauce on it was incredible. The fried potatoes and tuna weren't bad either. Service was also lackluster - it took a very long time for anyone to come take our order. Overall, probably wouldn't return.

Yelp
Service was far better than the food. Drenched in gloppy sauces, what chance do such small portions have? I pitied the ingredients brought together in such awkward and heavy handed layerings of flavorless textures. What could be allowed to shine, or speak? My own sighs at dismay, one volume after another, with each dish, spoke on their behalf. Why? WHY? And why oh why even feature cumin lamb on the menu??? Like someone raided the pantry for a late-night wok. The special of tuna medallions was special for swimming in an orange sauce that would have sunk a less hardy fish. It didn't sink, but it flailed. Ah, Nantucket! Ah, humanity!

Yelp
Came back to try out the food and it surpassed expectations! Same great atmosphere and experience, but now I can confidently recommend a dinner here. The bread was fantastic, as were the boquerones, served perfectly in olive oil. The sunchokes and brussel sprouts were unique and flavorful. I enjoyed the risotto and mafaldi, but the winner for the entrees was the frutti di mare. Seriously, this was one of the best dishes I have had in Nantucket. It is not to be missed, slightly spicy with shrimp and an incredible sauce. We'll definitely be back next time we are on the island!

Yelp
Stephanie was very amazing If you get Stephanie you are lucky. The plain pasta with butter and Parmesan sauce was very tasty. There was no bees. Epic.

Yelp
Wow!! Our best meal on the island was at Via Mare. Our server, Stephanie, was amazing and went above and beyond to accommodate our party. The restaurant is beautiful. It has a cozy, luxurious ambiance. I had a glass of chilled red wine, which was excellent and unique. We got various small plates for the table. For me the standouts were the straciatella, sunchokes, and risotto! Like everything on the island, it's a bit pricy, but I felt like Via Mare was a better value for our money than other places. Loved our experience here!

Yelp
This restaurant is one that I look forward to every single trip. The food is just phenomenal. The meat was all cooked and seasoned perfectly, the tuna tataki was far from fishy and portioned well. The caviar pancakes are a must if you like caviar, and the house made crostino (cheese, bread) is REQUIRED. I could go here and just order that. The rye and mushroom spaghetti was great but I probably wouldn't order again, and the green beans are always delicious. The decor is rustic and almost bookish in a unique way, with dark wood, comfortable cushions, and purposeful clutter. The staff is charming and accommodating, their bar staff had us try wines and were passionate about finding us the right one. The caviar dessert was unique too, if you're on the island for even one night this is the place to go.

Yelp
Food was just OK. Don't recall any plate that we just all raved about. Small plates are sometimes frustrating to predict sizes and staff wasn't really that helpful. Would not return. Prices were way out of bounds as well. Lot better food around Nantucket for 1/3rd of what we paid at this restaurant.

Yelp
Great cocktails and great food! We loved the asparagus, tater tots, chicken Milanese appetizer, and the pesto pasta. Best for small groups.

Yelp
Went here for a wonderful dinner last night. Had a nice outdoor table on the porch so we could enjoy the beautiful Nantucket evening. However looking inside it looked like a cozy space for dining also. As far as service - it was great - we had a primary waitress who was so nice , but several people also checked with us to make we had what we needed. With so many small plates its hard to choose on the menu but the wait staff provides guidance. We chose several of the small appetizer sizes plates and three of the small plates. No need to even order the larger dinners but they have a few choices for that as well. We topped it off with a delicious olive cake dessert and espresso Martini. Wonderful experience !

Yelp
Why is this only 3.5 stars? It's making me question Yelp as a source of information. The decor was cozy and hip. Definitely out of a Farrow and Ball catalogue. The staff was attentive in the best possible way. The kale salad was delicious as was the crostini. I could have those every night for dinner and be happy. Dessert was top notch. Was shocked it was not full on a Sunday night on a long weekend! If we had looked at Yelp, we would have missed out!

Yelp
This place is small but has a cool and cozy vibe to it. The bartender certainly knows how to make cocktails I will say that. Food is slightly overpriced but not terrible for Nantucket standards. Our server was very nice as well. For two people, I'd recommend splitting a larger plate and getting 3-4 small plates to split as well.

Yelp
Oh my GOODNESS! This place is a home run! This is the restaurant/bar in Greydon House. I highly recommend the mussels and bread-they are the best we have ever had. Creamy with a touch of spice in it, full and delicious mussels, and this gorgeous crusty warm bread for dipping. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!

Yelp
Great staff, our waiter Olivia and especially our hostess caroline were amazing, both very friendly, welcoming and provided great service. Food was very good, the bread doesnt look like much but it's a slice of heaven. Brussels sprouts, farfalle, and fra daviala were both great. Overall great atmosphere / well run restaurant! Took one star off only because of how long the food took.

Yelp
Very tasty meal with inside and outside sidewalk dining. I attached a photo of the menu. Waitress was professional and courteous would highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, mediocre food. disappointing and expensive. The prime rib is $60. On paper it's 12oz but it's considerably smaller and full with fat. The steak id rate it a 1/10 compared to most steak places...worse than Outback or other Chain stores Food was meh...go anywhere else but here.

Yelp
This was a really cozy, eclectic spot with great cocktails, excellent wine list, and very creative & fresh dishes!

Yelp
Ate here today and really enjoyed the atmosphere and service! Food was delicious, highly recommend the lobster appetizer. Waitress was super friendly and the decor was very cute.

Yelp
The food was sub-par. It used to be a great place years ago but wouldn't recommend it at all. Wait staff is rude. Food is way overpriced and portions are very small. Don't waste your time and money. Happy Stroll!!

Yelp
Worst service I've ever had in my entire life. Asked us to leave after one drink after our entire food order. Food quality was par but hospitality was quite honestly embarrassing. After the fact we were told we were unable to comment on the food and service and needed to leave immediately

Melissa S.

Yelp
I'd like to provide an honest review. As a frequent visitor to Nantucket, this place was sub par on food and RACIST. The offered a top up on drink then told us to leave. I was treated like a criminal. At the very least- they are awful

Wren C.

Yelp
This place makes me happy... it's great food made by foodies and I always have a good time. The flower arrangements are always a lovely garden variety.

Yelp
Full disclosure: we only stopped in for snacks and drinks, before boarding our ferry home, but it left a very positive impression on us. The place seems a bit eclectic both in decor, menu, and staff - and I mean that as a compliment. The wine list here is SERIOUS. Whoever picked out this lineup is not messing around. There's orange wine. There's wine from less seen places like Lebanon and Croatia. There's wine from everywhere in France, Italy, and Left Coast US. Anyway, the oysters were great, as were the deviled eggs (yes - simple dish, but still zinged up a bit). Oh and they make a great spicy marg to boot! Such a cool joint; I'll definitely be back.

Scott L.

Yelp
Made reservations for outdoor seating. They had us down for indoor seating. They were able to squeeze us in outdoors after some convincing. Glass of wine certainly less that 3 ounce. Food sparse and expensive. Service slow and seemed untrained. Restaurant could use some good leadership.

Michael C.

Yelp
My wife and I have been coming here for a while and have had a chance to try most of their offerings. So many menus in Nantucket are almost exactly the same. Via Mare offers an excellent selection of local favorites and some items that you will not find anywhere else. Food and service are really excellent. It's my favorite restaurant on the island.

S. B.

Yelp
Do not EVER ask diners to hurry up and get out!! It's OCTOBER!!! The food was wonderful but I will never step foot in there again! We had multiple cocktails, several small plates, a regular dish and desserts! I think we could have stayed another five minutes, don't you??

Renee M.

Yelp
AMAZING food. The Brussels sprouts were exceptionally good! The service could improve slightly but overall a great experience and delicious food. Definitely a great place to get a nice cocktail as well. Highly recommend!
