The 10 Best Thai Restaurants In Houston

"Vieng Thai in Spring Branch may not be much to look like on the outside, but just like people, jelly donuts and that crappy dollar store card stuffed with cash your weird uncle hands out on holidays, it’s what on the inside that counts. And here, that means vibrant, bright, and seasoned Thai food, like sour sausage, bright purple sauteed eggplant, and spicy drunken noodles. Take only those who are worthy of flavor here and change locations for dessert (‘cause there is none here)." - chelsea thomas, gianni greene

Vieng Thai Review - Spring Branch - Houston - The Infatuation

"Every now and then a spot surprises you. Vieng Thai in Spring Branch might look a little worn on the outside, but kind of like when a $100 bill falls out of the crumpled discount dollar store card your family-friend-uncle gave you for a birthday, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Here that means friendly, no-nonsense service, and vibrant and expertly seasoned Thai food. Dishes like crispy skin sour sausage, sauteed eggplant that somehow still glows purple despite bathing in spicy sauce, and soft and charred pad see ew drunken noodles. And if a dinner and a show is more your vibe, one side of the restaurant sports a giant wall mirror so you can watch yourself (or other people) enjoy bowls of spicy noodles and rice. Just don’t make it weird. Walk in most nights for a quick dinner packed with flavor.  " - Chelsea Thomas

I got the experience to eat the food with the owners and it was such a cozy environment. Food had such strong flavor and will definitely come again another time. Great find, if you’re reading this…trust me try it out, you’ll be pleasantly surprised 🔥🔥🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️❤️👍👍

Google
Outstanding food and service. The menu is varied 3 kinds of curry vegan and standard choices.and has favourites as, well as options to explore the service is prompt and friendly your drink stays full never out of rice. In a strip centre on Long.Point. Not.posh, but spotless. Reasonably priced. Ample parking recently returned to this family-owned restaurant that I hadn't visited in a while. My friend loves the Pad Thai, and I was pleasantly surprised to find many vegan options on the menu. The food is outstanding, the service is friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. It's located in a strip centre with ample parking.

The food is sooo good here!! I used to eat her 1x week when I worked nearby. The flavors are so rich and well developed. The waitress says everything is made from scratch. Cheese Rolls and Green Curry Chicken

Sometimes word of mouth gives the best advice. Vieng Thai was recommended to us as a diamond in the rough by someone my wife met at work. She said we wouldn’t be disappointed - and she was right. Unassuming from the outside, but inside there’s heart. I ordered the Pad Kee Mao, Thai hot, spicy, rich, and perfectly balanced. The kind of dish that stays with you. Staff was friendly, quick, and no-nonsense. A table of regulars in the corner joked about sports and life - it was the kind of scene that tells you a place is home for some. As someone who loves to cook and lives in the story behind every meal, this hit the mark. Real food, real people. Honest, delicious, and priced right. A quiet gem that’s worth seeking out.

Google
This is a true hidden gem for delicious Thai cuisine! The food is served like you’re at a 5-star Thai resort. the staff is friendly and welcoming for any questions if you’re undecided. I’ve been coming here for years and can’t believe Im just now posting on how impressed I am with this awesome restaurant. Highly recommend this place!

Google
Extremely consistent Thai food with some great flavor. I have tried various dishes and all of them have been great. Their soups are excellent and the pad Thai is always a favorite. Chicken Larb is a lighter classic and you can never go wrong with any of the curries. Make sure you tell them how hot you want it. They will not make it spicy if you don’t tell them to.

Google
Average Thai restaurant. Food tasted good. But the service was disappointing. The waitress was not so co-operative to explain the dish. She was super annoyed with the questions while taking the order. Don’t know why. Location and ambience was little iffy. I ordered Pad See Ewe. Some stir fired flat noodles with pork. Didn’t taste like authentic Thai dish but tasted good.

Google
I was super surprised when I realized there was a Thai restaurant here, it is hidden in a small strip so I didn't know. The place is so spacious and has a lot of upgrades, it could use some more upgrades but it's a little quaint restaurants. Our appetizers came out super fast and they were delicious, had so much flavors! The entrees came out almost right behind them and they were so yummy! The serve good portions on their plates. I definitely recommend this spot!

Yelp
Good local BYOB Thai restaurant on Longpoint in East Spring Branch. We've ordered to the house several times and finally dropped in. The interior is inviting and warm but somewhat dated. Service was prompt but perhaps too much to the point of feeling rushed. The food arrived to the table too quick. Even so, no real complaint here because we lingered well after finishing. The food was good. Portion sizes are shareable. We dared to ask for Thai Hot on our soup and it didn't measure up. Candidly, no heat at all. Maybe they took it easy on us? Overall, we love the BYOB option and will come back to try more as we didn't even make it to the Mains. This place has long been on some Best Of lists. Give them a try. Crispy Spring Rolls: exactly what you want and expect Clear Noodle Salad: A new try for us and favorite of the meal Tom Kha Soup with Chicken: Good, not spicy. I'll try a different soup next time. Pad Thai with Shrimp and Chicken: Solid representation of the go to Thai dish.

Yelp
Great food great service. We arrived at 11:15 on a Friday. It was slow however, it did pick up as time went on. I understand why because the food was very good. If you like spicy get hot because I ordered my dish medium hot and had zero kick. Other than that the food and service was good. I do recommend and will visit again.

Yelp
I was a little skeptical upon arrival. The restaurant is located in an area you would easily miss because the strip area looks pretty run down. However the group of women that served us were kind, helpful, welcoming, and answered all of our questions about spice levels. I had Thai Tea with my Chicken Basil Fried Rice and it was delicious. Hot, fresh, and flavorful with just the right amount of spice. I would definitely order again.

Yelp
I had been craving Thai food. And I had heard from a guy who had done Peace Corp in Thailand that this is the most authentic Thai spot in Houston. So my husband and I went last weekend. There was no one there when we walked in around 2pm but one group came in for dine in and another two guys for takeout while we were there. The service isn't gushingly warm but fine. We got the fried fish cakes, green curry, and drunken noodles: Fish cakes, 2/5: Interesting herb flavors but $7 for 4 little pieces. I think pricing them lower would encourage turnover. Took a star off for the portion compared to price. Drunken noodle, 4/5: Tiny portion but really great wok flavors. Took a star off for the portion compared to price. Green curry, 2/5: This rendition was salty, not creamy, no sweetness whatsoever, overall underwhelming. And the rice was really watery and not fresh. The peppers in the fish sauce are bomb though, and I picked them out of the sauce - I am certain my body temp was at least a degree higher than normal eating them, but that was so good. Keep in mind the recommendation came literally a decade ago through a guy on a dating app. Maybe this is authentic and I don't like authentic Thai food - doubtful, since I had winter break in Bangkok and Pataya one year and loved the food. Maybe the guy wanted a cheap date when dishes here were $6.95/plate - more likely. Would I come again - not super likely but not a definitive no. I see on reviews that the red curry is good here. So maybe that next!

Yelp
Solid Thai food with Thai natives waiting tables. Went here for lunch today. Tried several dishes & thought most were solid. The green curry was ok. The Tom Kha & fresh spring rolls were excellent. Thai tea was too sugary, but perfect once I diluted it a bit. Ambiance is not fancy. Very much a local place.

Yelp
After reading other reviews, my boyfriend and I decided to try this restaurant I'm sure we've passed many times. The prices on the printed menu are higher than listed online, but still reasonable for how delicious the food is. We got curry and pad see ew with beef. Of course, we got it spicy. I forgot to take a picture until after we started eating because it smelled amazing. Can't wait to go back and try other dishes!

Yelp
Love this little place! Been eating here for years, can't honestly remember how we found this place but the shrimp pad Thai is always my go to choice! The service is very friendly and they are extremely attentive! The chef has been the same from the first time we came here and I will continue to come here as I haven't found a place as good as this for my pad Thai!

Yelp
One of the most memorable part of this restaurant experience was their soft spring rolls and their spicy Thai curry! This restaurant is truly a hidden gem. I've gone to many Thai restaurants but this one has got to be the best so far. The spring roll was fresh, but it was the sweet peanut dipping sauce. It tasted incredible, almost like a caramel peanut butter sauce. It was to sweet but just perfect. I could taste the caramel and I loved the nutty flavor. The red Thai curry was fully bodied and rich with those traditional curry flavors. Loved the subtle taste of coconut milk. They added spicy oil for that additional kick. I didn't eat the rice. There was honestly no need to eat the rice as I gobbled the veggies up and drank the curry broth!

Yelp
Yummy cheeserolls and tord-mun-pla...(fish cake) Thai tea was perfect. 2nd time coming...will come again.

Yelp
Love it. BYOB. Service is also good and friendly. The food is amazing and it's pretty big to bring friends. Restrooms seem a little weird they go up but nothing out of the ordinary. It's very low light but we likes it.
google avatar

Quinn K.

Yelp
This place looks so run down outside in the little strip mall it inhabits but in my experience that's usually a sign of good food. The interior was very 1997, simple and quaint. Definitely a very casual spot. The service from out waitress was very friendly and fast, everything was on our table in a matter of minutes. We got the soft spring rolls and they were really good and the sweet peanut sauce they were served with was so yummy. I got the hot basil fried rice for my entree. The presentation of the food wasn't the best, it kind of just looked slopped on the plate but it was really good and flavorful. It was literally the greasiest fried rice I've ever had but luckily I'm a pig and I'm into that type of thing. My brother said his food was pretty good but very very sweet. It was pretty good all around, I'd be back but it wouldn't be my first choice.
google avatar

Patricia D.

Yelp
Little hole in the wall restaurant in a strip mall. It's worth the drive across the city to eat this delicious food. It's as close to authenticity as I could find in Houston.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
A little more expensive compared to the portions you might get for similar prices at other Thai restaurants, but the food was really tasty. The fried chicken wings were crispy and flavorful. Wish they had papaya salad, but the other salads we tried were good. Service was nice and attentive

Doug B.

Yelp
Pad Thai is usually an ordinary order for Thai food, but it is crazy good here!! Great food and great service! What more could you want?
google avatar

Huyen C.

Yelp
Overall, I would give the place a 3! The place is nice, it was a little hot inside. A cute, nice, small & quiet restaurant. We went for dinner at 5:30 on a Sunday. We ordered dishes & shared family style. The appetizers of wings & sausage were alright. I have had better sausages at different Thai & Lao restaurants. The wings were cooked/fried to perfection, but lacked a lot of flavor. Again, I have had wings at Thai restaurants that taste better. My favorite dishes were Pad See Ew & the sweet chili fried rice! Both dishes were flavored well & enjoyable to eat. The pad Thai and green curry were good, but not the best I have ever had. Wish they had dessert here since we were craving someone sweet. The ladies and service were great! They were efficient and we got and ate our meal within 45 mins. I love a good family owned restaurant. I would go back for the sweet chili rice only!

Rogelio T.

Yelp
Bad service. They Didn't want to take my card insisted on cash. I waited on carry out (and tipped), then asked for a refill and they said it $4.00 for a small sweet tea!! I get that drinks don't have to be free but how's some hospitality? Food also not great Egg rolls seemed frozen

Yelp
Dear foodie readers...you know I am fair when it comes to my reviews...but I can't stand it when walking into a restaurant within business hours, and they tell you they are closing...if you don't want people walking in, close earlier then time posted. They said if you order now, then they would take us. We ordered right away, which is fine, but it's only because we get the same things wherever we go. There were others that walked in right after, and were turned away. I ordered fried rice, and stir fried veggies....Hubs got the green curry... my veggies were good, but the rice was a tad on the greasy side...he loved his curry...it's considered a hole in the wall...I think due to the location...but that area is changing...I would have given it a 4 if not for the service.
google avatar

Tom J.

Yelp
Great Thai food! Not in the best part of town and definitely a hole-in-the-wall, but worth dining in or taking out! Don't forget your favorite wine as this place is BYOB!!
google avatar

Jo Ann C.

Yelp
This was the first restaurant where I tried Thai food and it was memorable. After being in a nursing home for a year, I hungered for some tasty food and this was one of the restaurants that started my food journey. It was just down the street from where I lived at the time. I liked the juxtaposition of different foods with different tastes and after a year or two I hungered for some good eats. I remember the first dish I tried was a dish with basil, ginger & beef. It made me hunger for more. If you have never tried Thai food, this is a good place to start. The Thai desserts may seem few but a good counterpoint to the spices. In short, give it a try. You shouldn't reject something you've never tried. You have no one to blame but yourself if you miss out on a taste adventure.

Yelp
Vieng Thai was recommended by one of my coworkers who said that its very well seasoned food and spicy. I was inclined to try it. The place itself looks run down. The ambiance is not attractive and I felt cramped inside with limited seating and tables. We ordered the shrimp soft spring rolls for appetizer and for the main items, we went with sweet chili fried rice and a pad kee mao with beef. The soft spring rolls were good and served with peanut sauce. The sweet chili fried rice also tasted good and were pretty good with the spice level. Unlike other Thai places, that ask you about the level of spice you want, this place doesn't. I figured the food was spicy enough. My pad kee mao was good too as there was enough spice in it, but I couldn't understand why there was so much cabbage in it. I have never been to a Thai place that served cabbage in its drunken noodles. That was way off. Also, the portion size were small compared to other restaurants. Overall I would rate this a 3.5 but I loved it in college when my professors would skew an 85 to an A or a 77 to a B, so I'm settling with a 4star for this restaurant.

Yelp
I've been visiting Vai for the better part of the last 15 years and today was the worst experience I've ever had there. The service, although it has never been very good was terrible and I'm not sure why. Me, and my party of three arrived at the restaurant Were seated and watched at least three other tables around us arrive get seated and have their orders taken and their food served to them before our order was ever taken. Once the food arrived it was bad too. Like I said, I've been coming here for many years and have explored the menu enough to know how almost every dish taste. Today the dishes did not taste like they normally do they were not as flavorful and did not seem to be prepared with much care. The boat noodle soup had one big giant chunk of noodles in it that when we picked it up, caused all the broth to fall out of the soup. The pads are tour, which has historically been my favorite dish on the menu, not good at all today. Although it was an overall bad experience, today, the service was by far the worst part. The waitresses seemed to not want to serve me. They didn't want to listen to my questions or answer them. They didn't take time to ask if we were finished with dishes and wait for a response they just picked stuff up even though I was planning on taking that morsel to go with me.I hope they can do better or if they can't I hope they close down and stop wasting peoples time and money.

Yelp
I was hoping this local eatery would blow my expectations. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything great. Flavors are average. It doesn't seem like it's cooked to order, almost like it's just been sitting around for a time. It has a mall food court quality at best.

Cinthia L.

Yelp
Food was good , overly salted , a lot of sauce , but okay. Do not dine in, they mandatory charge you a tip, saying it's policy , I would only do takeout to avoid being forced to tip

Jeff R.

Yelp
Serving authentic Thai dishes that brought me back to Udon Thani. Loved the boat noodle soup and Nam Tok. Definitely will be back.
google avatar

Jade J.

Yelp
This was a great hole in the wall place we tried based on a recommendation from a friend. The outside does look rough, but don't let that deter you from eating here. Once you're inside, it's comfortable and you forget about the questionable outside appearance. The food was good, service was great, and we'll definitely be back to try more!
google avatar

Jay P.

Yelp
Highly underrated! Is it the best in Houston? No. But the price to quality ratio might be. Thai, Korean bbq, and ramen have been getting way overpriced due to the increasing popularity over the past decade. It's great to see but lots of restaurants are taking advantage and charging the max people are willing to pay, instead of fair/normal prices. I tried all the basics like pad thai, pad see ew, pad kee mao, green curry, and papaya salad. All solid. All cheap. If you're in the area, give it a try. Support mom n pops!
google avatar

Rafi C.

Yelp
Just had take out from here and was absolutely delicious. Everything down to Basil ground chicken stirfry to even the steamed rice was authentic like what I eat in Thailand. Sauteed thai broccol (AKA Chinese broccoli or gai lan) was tasty and fresh. Thai Fried rice was perfect. Food was prepared fast. It's worth a drive to have real thai.
google avatar

Jules T.

Yelp
I've had all the curries except the masaman and the tom yum chicken and the drunken noodles. It was all great. Maybe a little too spicy for some or not spicy enough for others since they don't ask how spicy you want it but good none the less.
google avatar

Nancy N.

Yelp
Great experience! Best Thai restaurant hands down I've ever tried anywhere around the world in the states. I've visited Thailand and this place really reminds me of Thailand. We got the spicy chile fried rice with chicken, sausage for appetizer, fried catfish with green beans, and shrimp with ground pork. SO much flavor and all so delicious. It's a little older shop, spacious, you can tell it's been around, but I really enjoyed even the atmosphere. Hidden gem!!
google avatar

Laura C.

Yelp
This is an older restaurant in a somewhat sketchy looking strip center. The food is outstanding. Completely worth the drive even if you aren't in that area of town.

Yelp
I first checked out Vieng Thai many years ago as it appeared on Alison Cook's top 100 restaurants at that time. Fast forward to present day and I made a return trip for dinner with a friend on a Sunday evening. Vieng Thai is a casual Thai restaurant located off of Long Point--an area that has a lot of quality Asian restaurants. We started off with the egg rolls which are relatively small and served with a sweet chili sauce. You can't really mess up on egg rolls and spring rolls and these delivered. For my main dish, I went with the basic, yet classic, pad Thai with chicken and no bean sprouts. Vieng Thai knows how to make an awesome pad Thai. The food is affordable too. On the negative side, my dish had bean sprouts. Not a huge deal but led to some extra work as I had to pick them out. Service, overall, was slow in addition to the mishap. Vieng Thai is on the cusp of either being a 3 or a 4 in my book. 3.5 would probably be most accurate, but due to the quality of the food and the affordable prices, I'll give them a 4-star.

Lesli M.

Yelp
The food was not as good as it has been in the past. Plus, the portions are way smaller.
google avatar

Cindy S.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and I have always enjoyed my food. I've tried a few things and everything is good! 1. Rad na noodles- comes served with a lot of sauce (think soup). Soooo delicious! 2. Pad see ew- you can't go wrong with this classic. Yum. 3. Basil fried rice with pork- comes with big pieces of pork meat. Spicy but so good! 4. Spring rolls (fried)- excellent. I also hear the boat noodles are delish. The only thing that can be tricky here is parking! The lot is tiny and it's hard to find a spot. The restaurant uses cones to reserve a few spaces directly in front, which is nice.
google avatar

Jeremy T.

Yelp
I've been coming here for many years and this was my first favorite Thai restaurant in Houston. I don't visit often these days, but when I do, I always have a good experience and am guaranteed to have a good meal. They've done some remodeling in the last few years to try to keep up with the area, so that it's not so dark and gloomy inside. They have all the usual Thai favorites, but I usually stick to one or two different dishes. Both the pad kra pow and drunken noodles are excellent. Be aware when you add a protein to your dish, you will pay around $2 more than the price on the menu. ...similar to other Thai restaurants. Service is reasonably fast and be aware they don't have a lunch menu. Generally entrees start around 10.99. The vegetarian items are a little less.

Da'Zhaun H.

Yelp
This is by far one of the best Thai places that I've eaten at. The food is simple, straight to the point with bold flavors. I always get the Basil Fried Rice with chicken, the spring rolls and the Tom yum noodle. Apple is one of my favorite servers since moving to Houston and trying different places. Her service is great, she's fast and knows exactly what I want when my partner and I come in. This is a very quiet, ducked off restaurant. The food is really good overall.
google avatar

Bailey C.

Yelp
Probably the best Thai and curry, particularly the red and panang in houston! Don't let the outside fool you.

Vivek M.

Yelp
We went to restaurant after 3 years , the soup was excellent, the cat fish was amazing, we tried the Thai omelette which was superb. The pad Thai was also fantastic, but the pad se-wee came out burnt, asked them to fix it but that never happened and they still charged us for it.
google avatar

Meghan L.

Yelp
I had: - Spicy eggplant (good) - Thai iced tea (great) I was happy to support this place (a local, independent restaurant), but I was disappointed to see that the eggplant was listed as $6.99+tax on the website but I was charged $8.99+tax when I picked up the takeout I'd ordered. I asked about it at the counter because I'd assumed it was a mistake. Turns out, the website was incorrect. I'm sure this was an honest mistake by the restaurant, but listing incorrect prices on your website does tend to sacrifice a business's integrity. My only recommendation is to make this correction a priority. It was fun to try this place, but the eggplant dish wasn't worth $9, and the issue above threw me off a bit. I won't be back here, but I do wish this restaurant all the best when they match up their prices.

Yum Y.

Yelp
I have been a number of times and I enjoy the food but the place is so dank with nasty carpet. Friends were talking about going back and I had to satisfy my curiosity so I went to the city of Houston health department website https://houston-tx.healthinspections.us/media/search.cfm I check out many of the restaurants I go to, but especially ones that give you that feeing. So rest assured I am not singling them out. I get THINGS HAPPEN, I can look beyond some things but when it is repeat I cannot. Go read for yourself and make an informed decision.
google avatar

Dylan J.

Yelp
I got the shrimp pad thai which tasted good. The waitress messed up my order and brought me pork pad thai. Then when they took the pork off, and made shrimp they put not sauce or nothing on it and left the tails on. It tasted fine. We got there at 7:20, and they closed early at 8 that night. They rushed us to eat fast and brought the food before the appetizer. Not sure if I will return, and I probably won't recommend to other people.
google avatar

Patricia B.

Yelp
This is my favorite Thai spot in Houston! The curry is always delicious and spicy. It's basically our Cheers at this point. If we don't feel like cooking and it's gotten too late to go out, it's always a green curry with tofu and a red curry with chicken, both "Thai hot". The service is excellent and attentive. We love coming here!
google avatar

James D.

Yelp
Great food. Consistent. We always get the eggplant, red curry chicken, garlic chicken, beef boat noodles and recently tried the spicy clams dish (which was absolutely amazing!). They don't specialize in pad Thai IMO so I wouldn't order it here. We've literally been here over 30 x's!

Yelp
Always a staple for my friends and family. Can't go wrong with any of their curry dishes and Pad see ewe is always a favorite too. Soft spring rolls are gold and always soft and so tasty.

Yelp
After searching for Thai restaurants in Houston, I finally decided to try Vieng Thai. As the restaurant was recommended on Zagat's 10 Tempting Thai Restaurants to Try in Houston, I expected a great meal. But, I left the restaurant slightly disappointed. As I normally do, I ordered Thai Iced Tea. The taste was bitter, and the milk was very sweet. I'm not sure how to explain the taste, but it wasn't the typical sweet and punchy taste I'm used to. Next, I ordered the Papaya Salad, and requested SPICY . It was good. Super spicy, but good. Finally, I ordered Chicken Pad Thai. The noodles themselves were good. The bean sprouts were fresh. The crushed peanuts and powdered chili were added on the side for added taste and texture. However, the sauce of the Pad Thai was sweet; a little too sweet for my taste. All-in-all, Vieng Thai was a relatively clean restaurant with an attentive waitress (literally only one waitress there when I was there) and descent food for a descent price. I rated Vieng Thai a 3/5, as it was solid, not spectacular.
google avatar

Nadia G.

Yelp
This is probably the best Thai restaurant in the area, really friendly staff and very helpful with suggestions if you're not sure what to get. 10/10 Live music and tons of vegetarian/vegan options. Here's what we had!

Yelp
Best kept secret...... I have driven past this place for 5 years and never noticed.... the food here is phenomenal! The service was prompt and the prices were very reasonable. A friend and I decided to stop for dinner today after work, I'm not a huge fan of super spicy food but i found plenty of options that were just right. We ordered chicken satay and fish cakes for appetizers, they were excellent! When it came time to order entrees I decided on the sweet chili fried rice with chicken, I added shrimp too. It was delicious! The place is kind of small, and the servers were busy but attentive. I will definitely be adding this place to my dining out rounds! If you're a fan of Thai food or are curious to try, do yourself a favor and stop here first, you won't be disappointed.....

Yelp
I got the chicken satay and the tom yung goong. The satay comes with two small accompaniments - the peanut sauce and some sauce with onions &cucumbers. The taste of the satay was ok, but nothing special. The tom yung goong was about $8-9 bucks so I was surprise it was given in a smaller bowl size. I thought it would be given in a larger size bowl. However, the taste of the soup was ok, not spicy or sour, but more salty, which I'm ok with, but it's not like other tom yung goongs I've tried at other places. There was a live singer singing in the corner there as well so it was something a little different. Parking is just terrible here. Best to carpool if coming here with friends. However, for a pretty small restaurant, it was a good crowd there on Saturday evening despite terrible parking.
