Vegan and Vegetarian Food Carts To Visit in Portland | Eater Portland

"Portland has several Burmese restaurants and food carts, but Village Kitchen is the only one representing the Kachin cuisine of Myanmar. This green cart at Piknik Park in Sellwood has several vegan dishes: the iconic Burmese fermented green tea leaf salad, silky eggplant in a tangy tamarind-tomato based curry with fluffy coconut rice, and Shan style rice noodles with tofu puffs that soak up the five spice sauce. Well-sized portions arrive on a banana leaf with cucumber slices and a lime wedge." - Waz Wu

Where to Eat and Drink in Sellwood-Moreland | Eater Portland

"Even those familiar with Burmese cuisine will find dishes unique to this Piknik Park food cart, which specializes in the cuisine of the Kachin tribal communities of Northern Myanmar. Newbies should start with the Village Cooking, pieces of pork or chicken with culantro, Sichuan peppercorn, and chaplu leaf giving it an herbaceous, hard-to-pin-down flavor profile. The chicken arrives alongside a mound of coconut rice, adding a nice sweet contrast to the dish." - Alex Frane

Yum! Best tea leaf salad I’ve ever had. Perfect spicy, perfect funkiness. Friendly service and really quality presentation for a cart. Very charming little cart pod, just removed from the busy-ness of 23rd. My friend got a curry and I was slightly jealous. Can’t wait to come back and try everything from here.

Exceptional food! I've been visiting Village Kitchen regularly over the past couple of months since their food is just amazing. I am totally addicted to their paratha with pumpkin masala and the village salad. The flavors are vibrant and on point and one of the best I've had for this cuisine. They help adjust the spice levels which is great. We are normally able to find a seat near the inside of the food cart pods area or in the covered patio area outside. Village Kitchen team - Love your food! Keep doing what you're doing.

Google
I only regret, that I have but one stomach to eat a meal at Village Kitchen right now. I'm thrilled we found this place, and I'm going to go out of my way to make it back. I had the Village curry + paratha + egg & rice add-on for the kid, and everything was excellent. The curry has such a unique, slightly sour taste (in an amazing way!). Admittedly, I normally like sweeter coconut milk based curry, which this is not like *at all*, and this blew that out of the water. The paratha, too, is so different from Naan and almost has an elephant ear fried type of texture, which went great with the curry. Great value, unique and amazing flavor, and quality offerings.

Discovered this burmese fusion food cart while roaming past Portland's famous 23rd Ave. This place stood out amongst the typical fish and chips and burger / beer fare and has a healthy amount of vegetarian options. And wow. Their pumpkin curry (with tofu) and paratha dish was amazing. The curry is different from Indian curry. Super smooth, rich and just the right texture. And it's served on a big leaf, which was cool. The tofu was soft, kinda like mapo tofu and it made the dish so finger licking good. Saw there were more dishes so will be back to try more

Phenomenal, the rice noodle was a nice & refreshing for it being a hot summer day. Lil hint of ginger. The chai was unlike any other chai I’ve had and sooooo good. Lots of GF options.

The food, the flavor, the service, etc were amazing. Super delicious and low-key at the same time. There are many choices on the menu (you can easily make everything vegetarian too.) Definitely loved this place and will be going back! Eggplant stew is so delicious by the way.

Google
Fast, friendly, gracious service, delicious noodles, clean kitchen. I went back for the pumpkin curry, which was also top-notch tasty. Spice level was exactly as requested. Vegan and gluten-free options available. Burmese music created pleasant atmosphere. Look for the Eater article to read about the food cart’s interesting origins. Village Kitchen is the real deal!

A treasure in the NW. Amazing food made with so much love and care. Often when I’m feeling unwell or having a bad day I crave this food. The Paratha and Pumpkin Curry, Village Cooking, really all the dishes are so comforting and healing in their own ways. Generous portions and the kindest owners and staff. You will fall in love with this place.

Yelp
Absolutely LOVE this place!!!! I've tried a few other Burmese spots and found them bland. This cart in the Nob Hill pod is phenomenal! You can order by spice level and the flavors in everything I've tried- even the juices- have left me craving it again the next day. The food alone would be enough of a reason to go back again and again but the people working there make the experience even more pleasant by going above and beyond with their service.

Yelp
If you haven't been to Village Kitchen what are you waiting for?? It's the perfect comfort food for any weather but especially during this cold and rainy season! They offer vegetarian and vegan options if that's your jam. I really enjoy the eggplant curry and the noodles with tofu. But they do offer pork and chicken as well. I have had the pleasure of trying everything on the menu (vegan only of course) and I honestly wish I could eat this everyday. They recently added a new dish to the menu - Pumpkin Purée with Paratha and wooowwww that was such a delicious addition! The Mac Riah is a fun macaroni and curry mash up and it's everything you didn't know you needed. It's vegetarian but they can make it vegan upon request ;) Parking - street parking Seating - lots of seating, heaters and a fire pit Overall experience is wonderful and I will continue visiting the cute food cart in Sellwood for some warm, delicious comfort food no matter what the weather looks like :)

Yelp
Burmese eats in Sellwood y'all! Always refreshing to try new cuisine and change it up. I got the Kachin Tribe chicken and while it's reminiscent of curry flavs the nuances of spices intrigued my palate to have more bites as the taste is familiar yet foreign at the same time. This cart is located in the PikNik pods next to New Seasons. There are a few outdoor tables avail to dine at. I used 2g2g so my order was ready and quick pick up. The front staff was sweet and polite really making it hard not to come back to support biz along with trying more dishes. Glad Kitchen Village is now on my radaaaar.

Yelp
Located in Piknik Park in SE PDXnear Sellwood. Village Kitchen is the food cart pod's newest good cart. Nicely prepared Burmese food with a couple of Vegan options. Service was fast, friendly and efficient.

Yelp
I love this place! The food is so unique and fresh. It's run by this really cute gay couple and one of them is actually from Burma! So you know you're having authentic Burmese food. I can't say enough about their Village Cooking dish...it's so fragrant and savory, it will keep you wanting to come back for more. Also, I've never tasted anything like their Tea Salad. Super fresh, super crunchy, super tasty. Highly recommend, 10/10, 100%

Yelp
This place has the best curry-infused mac and cheese on the face of the earth. So so flavorful, great presentation, food was made hot and fresh for me on the spot. Could not recommend more!

Yelp
This food cart area is very cute and somewhat eclectic it's got kind of a mishmash of furniture and decorations. Food was ready quick. I ordered the eggplant curry I thought that the curry tasted mostly of tomato and was somewhat lacking in other flavors the rice was cooked pretty well. My friend got the village cooking and was not super thrilled by his dish either.

Yelp
Village kitchen is sooo good! You can tell the ingredients are fresh. I've never had Burmese food before and the flavors are so so yummy; nothing like I've ever tasted before. The green tea salad is my #1 favorite. It is tangy, refreshing, & fullll of flavor. It comes with rice and it's a whole meal in itself. The village curry is also a favorite! Their house made chili oil is fireeee & compliments every meal. I love how they serve the food wrapped in banana leaves. It gives off that "village" aesthetic This is a must try spot, you'll be excited to come back and try the rest of the menu! Plus, the owners are the sweetest ever!

Yelp
We have ordered 4 dishes there and have thoroughly enjoyed their food with each visit. The Village Salad is the dish I highly recommend- great texture, robust flavors, and hearty. It is not your average salad! Truly, all the dishes have been delectable! Additionally, the cart owner/server is incredibly hospitable, happy to describe the dishes, and just overall nice. We plan to make this cart a regular go-to! Please go try their lovely food!

Yelp
Curry yum ... everyone in my group ordered the curry -- mild chicken, medium pork, and hot tofu. Everyone was impressed and wants to go back soon. Get the coconut rice and add an egg.

Yelp
Delicious!!! We had the vegan Village Salad and all loved it (our 10 year old too). The coconut jasmine rice, tea leaves, and crunchy beans were some standouts. Very friendly, too. Can't wait to go back!
