Best Speakeasies to Sneak Into in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"This recently revamped subterranean venue takes its inspiration from New York’s Meatpacking District and Parisian brasseries. Equipped with a menu centered on cheeses, desserts, wine, and beer, the speakeasy also offers a cocktail list that changes each season. The wine list features over 100 different bottles and bar bites include charcuterie and cheese boards served with baguettes. The bar’s 12-foot tasting table and weekend wine tastings are a must. From the cocktail list, Le Tropique is a vodka-centric beverage with pama pomegranate liqueur, coconut, and lime." - Roxana Becerril

We had a surprisingly wonderful night dancing. The music was great. The dance floor was not sticky. There was an enough seating to rest too.

Stopped in on a Friday evening with 8 guests and easily found tables. Ordered a few cocktails - they were decent. Service was very friendly and attentive. Decor is very whimsical and pretty. They had a trio group of performers/singers who put on a little show. Would recommend for a nice little cocktails before or after dinner.

We went here before going to a concert at the music box and it was absolutely perfect! I came with a friend who was vegan and when she asked if there was anything vegan on the menu the chef ended up creating a whole plate of things that she was able to eat and brought it out personally. The servers at the bar were so accommodating and nice and the live musician was very talented. Ambiance was a 10/10. I would beyond recommend this place to anyone!

Google
I had been eager to visit this place for months, intrigued by its Alice in Wonderland theme. While I hoped for a bit more, it certainly lived up to my expectations. The ambiance was just right--classy and whimsical. Arriving on a Sunday around 8 pm meant it wasn't crowded, which was nice. The bartenders were attentive and took their time going over the cocktail menu with us. My husband, who's quite particular about his Old Fashioned, was pleasantly surprised by his choice. As for me, I opted for the Beet It and loved its fruity flavor. I'll be returning to explore more of their cocktail options.

We picked up Matt from the station and stayed for his set. San D got a nice treat tonight. Radio Slave was a beautiful spot, and excellent sound. L9ved thevib3z and decor too. We didn't sample dinner or drinks but hope to return.

Google
Underground hidden bar with Alice In Wonderland, down the rabbit hole theme. Down the stairs from the street, find the hidden door, and you're in. Pretty cool gimmick. Drinks were well made. We had a couple of appetizers, which were also good. Bar tenders were both excellent. We enjoyed our quick two drink stop.

Google
Great experience overall. I went for Galentine's Day and it was an great event! There bartenders were still very attentive even though they were extremely busy! The food was just as good as the cocktails + wine. I would love to come back from another event. Make sure you order the Kimchi Deviled Eggs!!!!

Google
I wanted to love this place, but I have mixed emotions about it. Cocktails were good and nicely prepared. The wine selection, by the glass, was OK. Could have had a few more options (especially Syrah) since this is a place with Syrah in the name. Bartender was efficient, but not particularly friendly Tastefully decorated and comfortable chairs, but perhaps could use a little bit more seating since it was not very full yet most of the seats were taken. The part that threw me off was a magician that caused a lot of yelling and loud discussion - this happened to two different groups that he was entertaining. Seems to be a bit of a younger crowd - perhaps because it is near the gaslamp district. Tip: if you're taking an Uber/Lyft, the drop off should be The Melting Pot since there is not a obvious sign out front marking the location

Yelp
Walking into Vin De Syrah is like stepping into a secret garden of decadence, tucked right beneath the streets of San Diego. The vibe here is electric--whimsical, moody, and filled with surprises at every turn. I came in for a quick drink and ended up staying for hours, hypnotized by the live DJ, cozy corners, and craft cocktails flowing like magic. I asked the bartender to get creative with AsomBroso, and they delivered a masterpiece: a bold tequila cocktail layered with fresh citrus, a touch of herbal intrigue, and just enough bite to remind you you're sipping something special. It was the kind of drink that makes you close your eyes and just feel it. Vin De Syrah isn't just a bar--it's an experience. Can't wait to go back. -Rick

Yelp
First time here. Celebrated bday. The place is spacious. Cute idea where sitting areas sectioning have a different feel to it. Feels Cozy, yet open concept. Booths are also available. It's like a secret garden Inside. We got there early so the place was pretty much to ourselves. Drinks were all yummy. Menu was limited Not much to highlight. Extensive wine list, full bar. By 10ish, dance floor was open, crowd rolled in. Music was upbeat. Place was pretty full. Our server was nice, Service- pretty standard. She check how we were doing few times. Enjoyed the illusionist, was entertaining and funny. Monday-Wednesday CLOSED. Thursday & Sunday 5:00pm to Late Friday-Saturday 5pm-1:30am *Food available till 9pm* ( pls re-verify hours of operation in case it's changed) Place is speakeasy ( turned club by 10ish) underground. Bathroom- it's outside behind the dbl doors. Parking - best to get dropped off. Street parking, valet also available.

Yelp
Absolutely Horrible Experience - Vin de Syrah Has Gone Way Downhill Can I give ZERO stars? I don't even know where to begin. We came here for my sister's bachelorette party, and what was supposed to be the highlight of our night turned out to be a total disaster. We paid for bottle service--and got ZERO service. Not a single staff member checked on us, no one helped us set up, and we basically had to fend for ourselves after being overcharged. The music was awful--just chaotic noise--and not at all what I remembered from past visits. The whole vibe was sketchy, with multiple people looking like they were clearly on something. Maybe that's the kind of crowd they attract now? I've been to Vin de Syrah before and had good times, so this was a complete shock. I'm honestly wondering if they're under new management because it feels like a completely different (and much worse) place. Everyone in our group was disappointed. We ended up leaving and going somewhere else just to salvage the night. What should have been a special celebration turned into frustration and regret. HUGE REGRET!!! This place has taken a massive downturn, and I will never be back. Save yourself the time, money, and headache--Vin de Syrah is no longer worth it.

Yelp
This place is 5/5 stars, hands down!! My local friend recommended it and I came right at 5p when they opened on a Wednesday. The place was still empty when I came and wow, they have tons of seating! I'm sure it gets crazy busy on weekends here. I really like the Alice in wonderland theme as a "speakeasy"/underground bar, it's super cute! I sat at the bar and as the only customer I was served very fast. They have every day happy hour from 5-7p and it includes 1/2 off all cocktails, a great deal!! I ordered the cocktail they said would be most floral (it was purple and had flower petals all over the side - just like I like my cocktails lol). I paid like $10? A very good deal indeed. I was too full to have more than one cocktail but I sat and caught up on messages from friends there and enjoyed the music/low light disco ball ambiance. Would absolutely rec a visit to this place to anyone visiting SD!

Yelp
Beautiful! 100% recommend. We were the first group to arrive, and the team was so welcoming and lovely. Drinks were delicious!

Yelp
This is such a fun bar! We enjoyed it so much we went back the next time we were in town. Cool ambiance, the details in the decor are awesome. I loved the drinks there, the presentation and taste were perfect and the service was great.

Yelp
I've been coming here since my UCSD days back in 2008ish and I'm so glad it's still around, the best vibes, reasonably priced drinks, good music, just overall a great time every time I come here

Yelp
If you're looking for a hidden gem AKA Speakeasy try VIN DE SYRAH in Downtown San Diego. Food, service and ambience unmatched. Wine tasting and pairing, with a professional sommelier, is Simply STELLAR. Cheers

Yelp
I attended their Galentine's event, and it was absolutely fantastic. The interior is lively and fun, with charming décor and cozy booths in the back for seating. The servers were incredibly friendly and attentive, making the experience even better. Plus, they had amazing drink specials. The event itself was well-organized and full of great activities. They offered complimentary Tito's-sponsored drinks, wine glass painting, wine and chocolate pairing, friendship bracelet making, and more. There was even a cute Instagram-worthy spot for photos, adding to the fun atmosphere. I've come here on the weekend, and it gets really crowded. Way too crowded for my liking, but if that's your scene, they have great DJs and a lively crowd.

Yelp
This place is always been a fan favorite. I'm surprised I don't have a review about it already but honestly, it's one of the best places in San Diego. I always refer my friends to it. It's one of those individual places that are so unique you can't fight put your hand on it, but it is also familiar. It's not a dive bar for sure but it is somewhere that you don't wanna be at least once a month. Whether there be a celebration, whether it would be a business meeting, whether there be just getting out and letting your hair down this is definitely the place. It has an essence of Alice in Wonderland mixed with an amazing speakeasy. This is my introduction to speak easy and honestly, there is nothing that really compares to it and I've been to a lot of speakeasies around the world. It's not a true speakeasies in this traditional sense, but you'll see why I say it might be speakeasyish.... The best thing about speakeasies is the things that you discover every single time you come. Definitely don't want to be considered a regular but this place has had my heart since 2014. It was my introduction to the San Diego nightlife and since i've been coming here, 11 years strong and honestly, there's no place I'd rather be. they just had a complete revamp. I still love it. I just opened a summer cocktails menu so far I've tried to fly a soul and look to experiment with the Alper bourbon jeans and also the honey bear. If you're in San Diego just visiting try this place out. You won't be disappointed Thursday Friday. Saturdays are amazing evenings. I wouldn't say dress to impress, but definitely come like you know better. I was a little disappointed in the by past (2024) when I noticed there were a lot of tennis shoes, but that has changed and now I feel more comfortable being able to dress in the attire that I dress in. The music is always on point. The bartenders are very attentive. The waitresses are also attentive. If you're looking to get a table, I would highly recommend it. The host are pretty awesome too. Super light of the side honestly, this is my go to. I've spent many a New Year and Halloween here just because of the vibe that it naturally has.

Yelp
Vin de Syrah is an interesting experience. Tucked away in the basement of a vintage hotel, you get transported to an almost Alice In Wonderland type vibe where you can enjoy drinks on drinks. If you stick around late enough into the night then it becomes a night club of some sort. We weren't young enough to last that long but while we were there, we sat in the booths along the sides and had great service while we sipped some drinks to wind down from the day. Prices are pretty standard so hope you're fuel efficient and get buzzed off one drink or two. Either way, Vin de Syrah can be the start or finish to your night out in Gaslamp district.

Yelp
Great place to grab a glass of wine surrounded by great ambiance but steer clear of average mediocre food. Tip, the worst menu item ordered were the olives and nuts...stay clear!

Yelp
Nice and classy place in the Gaslamp district! Located in the basement on the fifth street - it is a bit hard to spot! Going down the stairs into the basement it gives an impression of speak easy access during the prohibition era! It is a mix of wine bar and speak easy as focus is wine! During our visit there was also a burlesque show which was pretty good! Food choices are a few - caprese we shared was pretty good with addition of arugula a salad. Wine list is exhaustive - but the bottle of wine we ordered was unavailable so we settled for a different one. The only downside here is service. We waited 30 minutes from walking in till our wine arrived...

Yelp
First time! Visited on a Friday night, such a fun ambience. The music is great, and the energy is upbeat. Perfect place for girls night out. Quick bar service, too. There's a free, digital Photo (boomerang-type of video) Booth towards the back. You can text/email yourself the video. 10/10 recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
For those that don't know, this is a speakeasy type of bar and restaurant. After dinner, they turn into a club on the weekends. Such a lively vibe! Great drinks and bites. The service is always good! Definitely recommend this hidden gem in San Diego if you're visiting, or want to check out a fun spot that isn't chaotic nor overwhelming

Yelp
We attended a complimentary cocktail release last evening and I was very disappointed how the evening event was handled. We had a wonderful young lady serving us and we ordered one of the drinks released for the evening. We also ordered a panini to accompany our drinks. The complimentary sample was provided to us by our server in a plastic cup. That surprises us as we have attended many events at other restaurants of this group who went above and beyond the customary tasting. After another sample at 7:15 pm we were informed that this will be our last sample. 2 samples in plastic and we must move out of the way for the DJ which begins at 8. The drink service was to last to 9pm with additional drinks $10. We closed out with our server and left as we felt customer service was not a priority for the evening, but the DJ was.

Yelp
This place captures the essence of a speakeasy, everything I imagined. Very classy yet somehow with casual vibes. Like an invitation to go to your rich friend's house. The manager and staff were so kind and helpful. I wanted to set up a special thing for my partner, to make her feel special. They helped me coordinate to give her a big surprise. The wine tasting was such a cool experience. I felt like I was taking the scenic route through the Italian coast. One of the best nights I've ever had! Thanks to Vin de Syrah!
google avatar

Joyce L.

Yelp
People seem to really love this place, but I thought it was alright. I came here for the speakeasy-esque vibes, but it's got that dingy musty nightclub feel to it. It is a nightclub in the evening... and when I stumbled upon this place on a weekend night, loud music playing, college kids all around. Oh man, was I out of place! So came back again during normal non-club operating hours (~6pm) for a drink and quick bite. Food was okay, pretty average. I got the Beet It cocktail, which wasn't bad! But idk, personally can't get over the sticky frat house party feel of the place... ahh! I'm really curious of their other drinks, so would come back for that... but not a top list place for me, personally. *edit* Went back and looked at my receipt, and prices do not match the menu listed price, which is a bit of a red flag for me. There is also a 5% surcharge, which I'm fine with... but price discrepancies, esp after the fact, rub me the wrong way. ;\

Yelp
We went for their 15th anniversary which was a very fun environment! They had a sommelier for wine tasting and a contortionist. The live performers were great! I had a prosciutto grilled cheese that was yummy. The service was poor at our table, but it was a busy night. Would go back!

Keri M.

Yelp
We came here for my sister's bachelorette party and what a nightmare!! They had no clue what they were doing. We paid over $900 for bottle service and the server was nowhere to be found. She made us one drink and left. We had to track her down to pay our bill and we were way overcharged with a 20% gratuity when she did nothing I would definitely not recommend this for anyone
google avatar

Barbara S.

Yelp
Cute speak easy behind a wall of foliage (yes, we were those fools walking around in circles - but isn't that part of the experience!?!) We sat at the bar, and weren't disappointed! Phenomenal cocktails, beautiful setting... Would be a lovely place to come with a large group or on a first date.

Yelp
This place is a whole little maze to get to. You have to go downstairs to find it. Once you go inside prepare to feel like you are teleporting to a whole other realm. The Alice in wonderland realm. The service was fantastic. It was busy but the crew here made every table feel like they were the only ones there. They kept coming to check on the tables and ask if we needed anything. The cocktails are great. They actually taste like there is liquor in it. The charcuterie board and pink deviled eggs were so good. I hear that they offer burlesque on certain nights so I can't wait to come back and check that out. Thank you for your hospitality
google avatar

Yelp
Vin de Syrah is probably one of my favorite places in downtown, everything from the ambiance and drinks. I have always had a good time every time I've come here. On this occasion I introduced some friends to it and they were impressed. Although it announces it's a wine bar, they have a full and pretty extensive bar with many other alcoholic options. Whenever I've come here, service has been quick and friendly. It's also fun to watch people try to find the entrance (there's a video feed of the front area). If you're visiting or a local, this is a great spot to go!
google avatar

Lacy D.

Yelp
Syrah is so fun! I first came here over a decade ago and it had been awhile since I'd visited, but it's still the same! My girlfriend's and I had four menu items, cocktails, and wine. We stopped in early, around 8pm, and it was pretty quiet which was great for us to chat and munch on our girl dinner. It's so whimsical inside and open. There's also a cool little Photo Booth area to snap some cute pictures with your friends. Loved coming back and seeing that not much had changed over the years. Can't wait to go back again!
google avatar

Maria S.

Yelp
Cute spot for drinks Had reservations on a Friday and the place was empty! They have an array of wine options and a lot of different cocktails. I can only speak for the wine, but it was very good. JJ was very knowledgeable and provided excellent service
google avatar

Perry S.

Yelp
Came out to this spot while in the Gaslamp and was not disappointed! Concerned about the menu and the drink selection as I was not planning to have a wine flight, but the cocktails and sandwiches did not disappoint! Bonus "show" on Friday night! Great spot to visit!!!
google avatar

Missy B.

Yelp
So I've never actually eaten here, but let me tell you the nightlife is so fun. I love to take my out of town friends to this spot, as it feels like a nice escape into Alice's Wonderland. Years ago, they used to have cabaret singers, I'm not sure if they still do. My last visit was a couple months ago now, and we arrived after 11pm, so if there were still performers, we definitely missed them. This place gets packed (and I mean packed) but it's fun to dance, and the DJ is super good. There's even a saxophone player that plays live and accompanies the DJ music. Bartenders are quick and knowledgeable, though, like I said it does get very busy there so you might have to wait a bit to get your drink order in. Overall, it's a fun spot to dance your buns off at night!
google avatar

Samantha T.

Yelp
Really cute place. Bartenders were friendly and attentive. Clean place and good music was playing. Not too loud, just perfect level. The bar area is cool because they have all the liquor displayed and off to the end they had the food being prepared. They have a pretty decent selection of alcohol as well which was nice.

Chance L.

Yelp
Had the best time tonight at Vin De Syrah. Truthfully at a loss for words. We had Bo take care of us. Hands down the best bottle solervice experience I've had in San Diego in 12 years of living here. I'd pay yelp personally to put this on a Billboard in order to shout out Bo. Such a great night. I hope we see her again!!!!
google avatar

zak b.

Yelp
Very cool Alice and wonderland wine bar! Fun to take friends and hard to find entrance. Love the concept and it has never been packed when I've been so it makes it accessible. To be honest, not the best wine though
google avatar

Yelp
Hidden gem..love the creativity put in to this place . Tried the Beauty in Bloom drink-so tasty!
google avatar

Luis R P.

Yelp
Excellent ambiance. Their food is on the light side but delicious. The decor is super nice. This is a great wine bar. Service is fast and employees are super nice. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Todd R.

Yelp
It was a weeknight. We were the only ones there. We tend to love engagement from the bartenders so that we can get guidance on which cocktails fit our tastes best. We were all but ignored here. Ordered one drink each and then left. Totally unremarkable beverages. Ambiance was overly busy with an unclear/undefined theme. The speakeasy scene in San Diego has far too many entrants to settle for sub par.
google avatar

Jazzy P.

Yelp
Popped in last night after Padres game. Very cool design and vibe. We grabbed some red at the bar. Service was quick and polite. A really super talented comic/ magician came up to us. Had us laughing and in disbelief in 2 minutes. Nick Ivory was his name. You have to see him to believe it. Or disbelieve what you believe you see. Really great and creative experience. I look forward to bringing other friends to see him personally. He also works at other CRG spots he said. Make the effort to experience it yourself! Fantastic

Jamie H.

Yelp
First time coming here on a date night with the husband. Very cool ambient spot. Reminds me of a speakeasy. They turn the lounge into a club. Great music. Amazing specialty drinks!! Shout out to Alexa! She was amazing. She was busy running around, yet made sure she was engaged with us throughout the evening. Thanks for a great night! We appreciate you. Cheers to Alexa with a casamigos shot!
google avatar

Nicole J.

Yelp
Such a fun spot with so much character! Loved the surprise burlesque show and galentines themed night. Can't wait to go back.

Lindsey F.

Yelp
Genuinely the coolest spot I have ever been to! The theme is so creative and literally transports you into another world. Came here on the Irish 4 A Day bar crawl and ended up staying the rest of the time! Insanely cool atmosphere, the kindest staff, and bomb food. Will ABSOLUTELY be returning and telling all my friends!!
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
Not gonna lie, going down a dark staircase made me a little nervous, but what a pleasant surprise to stumble into through the moss covered door (was it moss?) Cool vibes, creative drinks, live dj, friendly staff. Highly recommend for a night cap.
google avatar

Sana T.

Yelp
Would recommend going early! There's always a. giant line later in night. Great drinks and the servers are a chill vibe!
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Happy this place is till open. Definitely not what it ever was a decade ago - servers were great! Management was trash per usual! Don't go down if you have asthma or breathing problem.
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
Amazing service, food, and drinks. My boyfriend and I came down to San Diego for our 5 year anniversary and this place definitely made our experience worth while. For drinks we got the espresso self and the middle Earth to start. Both 12/10. We had such a hard time deciding what to get but we ended up getting the goat cheese balls. Obviously another 12/10. Chris and Luis really blew everything out of the water with their service though, we found out later on that Chris is actually the head chef and makes it a point to prepare things at the bar top- so cool. We LOVE the atmosphere, service, and food here. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem. We were so confused trying to get in that it was actually comical. The theme was Alice In Wonderland, which explained the hidden door for the entrance (look towards the greenery). The vibe was exactly what we needed for a Wednesday night. It was super chill. We had a cheese and meat board and an imported French wine. The bartender was also really nice and attentive. I'm not sure what the weekend looks like but I would definitely recommend this for a relaxing weekday evening.
google avatar

Matthew M.

Yelp
Unique Alice in Wonderland bar, packed on the weekends with a DJ, but very chill during the week. Hidden door and speakeasy feel. Large chairs inside and great decorations (and mirrors). Large cocktail menu. Only one server when we were there so it took awhile, but he was knowledgeable, friendly, and working fast. Beer and wine options as well. Overall, I'd recommend this for a party on weekends or a nice cocktail spot during the week, all indoors, no outside, get ready to rumble.

Elissa C.

Yelp
Aa musical theater fans This was the BEST stop for our bachelorette party!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nicole M.

Yelp
This our first time here and I have to say the food and drinks are amazing not to mention the service is wonderful and friendly.

Yelp
One of my favorite bars in San Diego and definitely my favorite one in Gaslamp! I have only come later at night and have not had a chance to come for one of their wine tastings. The space is usually converted into a club but the time I get there and it is a great place to dance. I really enjoy the music there and the drinks are pretty good. I have also had table service here and it was a great time! The entrance is down the stairs just off the street in Gaslamp. It is one of the more creative entrances I have seen and I won't spoil too much on here. Their halloween party last year was also great! I have always had a good time here and recommend you check it out if you haven't already!

Yelp
*Pre-Covid Review* 2nd time coming to this location. Speakeasy ready! 1st time there was a small wait, but it was still early. The 2nd time was on a Thursday so I literally walked into the place with no wait. Walk down and find a small door with grass all around it and you enter into a glorious and fun speakeasy! They play music from singers w/ a guitar on a weekday to EDM spin tables on weekends. They have a bar on the left, right is a large wooden table, a small dance floor, and couches surrounding the DJ booth/in front of the dance area. There's more! The back has a few small chairs, but don't get lost going to the bathroom! It's trippy and gold. I really like the decor similar to the Alice in Wonderland theme. I recommend this location for drink-specific items. Their creations are always balanced and tasteful. Drink prices are similar to LA (~$14 min), so I'm not complaining. That being said, I got the watermelon delight and I'm not sure what my Kuya got. Both were delicious. I remember we got Midsummer Night's Dream as well... and then we kept the buzz going! They have a nice selection of beer (bottled/imported), wine, cognac, whiskey, whatever you want, they probably have! I really hope they kept the vibe going and will come back Post-Covid for another review! I'm glad this location stayed open, since the experience was fun!

Yelp
Gustavo is the best!! He is the best promoter in the world. He took great cate of us and was so attentive and so kind. I would recommend him to anyone that wants to have a fun night!
