"Violet offers a variety of pizzas and non-pizza dishes, but the main focus is on their grilled pies inspired by Al Forno’s in Providence, Rhode Island. The pizzas, however, face several issues, especially with their heavy and unbalanced toppings that overshadow the quality of the crust. The classic pizza with tomato, havarti, and scallions, the 'nduja pie, the duck prosciutto pizza, and the 'achaarlic bread' all have flaws that detract from the overall experience. Despite the unique concept and the potential, the execution falls short, making the pizzas at Violet a disappointment." - Ryan Sutton

"Violet, the grilled pizza and seafood restaurant from Emmy Squared’s Matt Hyland, brings a new brunch option to East Village starting this weekend. It kicks off Saturday, March 30 at 11:30 a.m., and brunch dishes include an everything bagel-spiced grilled pizza with hollandaise, smoked salmon, and a poached egg, as well as grilled chorizo with a cheese curds Johnny cake, mornay scrambled eggs, and grilled cherry tomatoes." - Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya

"Of all the potential regional-cuisine mashups, Rhode Island-Indian—which is how you could describe some of the food at Violet, a hotly anticipated new restaurant in Alphabet City—has got to be pretty high on the list of unexpected contenders." - Hannah Goldfield

"The Pizza Loves Emily Group has opened their sixth restaurant in Alphabet City. Violet, named after Rhode Island’s state flower, focuses on grilled cuisine—specifically, pizzas inspired by chef Matt Hyland’s favorite stomping ground in Providence, Al Forno. (Fun fact: he and Emily had their first date at the ristorante.) Pies are grilled on both sides and topped with items like grilled winter squash, broccoli and pistachio pesto, or clams and duck prosciutto, and served with scissors for cutting. A selection of pastas including gnudi with smoked squash purée, ricotta and sage brown butter; pork and duck tortellini with dashi brodo and Sichuan oil; and baked fusilli with vodka sauce, ricotta and herbs is also on offer." - Abbe Baker

Great addition to the Pizza Loves Emily family! We ordered the burger, mixed greens salad, and the meatball pie. The pizzas are smaller than the original Emily pies but the dough is thicker (it’s made on the grill)! You also get to cut the pie with scissors. The burger was great but I think the original and Emmy Squared burgers are a bit better. The Pom Poms with the burger were incredibly unique and salty. I also overheard the waitress say they have $1 oyster happy hour so I will definitely be back!

Delicious grilled pizzas! The crust is excellent, an ideal thickness and a bit smokey from the grill. The baked stuffed clams are also a good choice with a bit of uni on top giving them a nice briney kick. Don't skip the baked pasta! While the menu is seafood heavy, there should be something for everyone including vegetarians.

Violet is an interesting and worthy addition to the Emily Pizza empire. I recommend the Lady Pizza Girl with ricotta and jalepenos, but don't overlook the non-pizza options here. The duck ravioli and burger are both delicious as well.

This is the best restaurant I’ve ever been to in New York City! The food was sublime - interesting flavors and perfect execution. The staff were phenomenal- friendly, efficient, unobtrusive. The restaurant is clean, the bathroom is clean, the ambience is wonderful. I had a perfect dining experience- the first of my life!!

A really cool and fancy pizza place. I'm a fan of all of Chef Matt Hyland's places and this new addition is great. It's like a grilled pizza style and some of the starters are delicious. I had the bone marrow and salmon roe - which is great, but I would say it's not more than the some of its parts. I'm a big fan of the anchovy pizza, so much so that I crave it sometimes. Amazing wings, amazing meatballs and amazing pizza. (But everything is amazing about this whole menus!!!) A sweet thoughtful waitress who has wonderful personality and makes you feel happy to be there gave us great customer experience. I hope she sees this comment 🙂 Really if you want a little piece of bliss go here, you will not regret your choice.

A pleasant experience, especially for the second night open. Matt Hyland continues to do a great job with his group of restaurants. Must tries are the bone marrow, dune duck, and squash pizzas.

This place is legit. The appetizers -- grilled shrimp, and the bone marrow -- were amazing, and the Aquidneck pizza was outstanding. Nice vibe and good service, solid selection of wine, and also fun cutting your pizza with scissors.
