Violet Oon is like a media personality for peranakan food in Singapore. Her appearances on tv, internet and cooking demonstrations has always made me want to try out her food.
There I have it, in Jewel, and there's no queue, so I entered.
I ordered the fish curry with prata ($22). The first mouth of curry was indeed what my expectations would be! Very very good curry. Spicy but not choking. There is a tinge of sourness to it to balance the spiciness. That is a nice delicate touch. Prata is served one single piece, but no burnt ends at all. Impressed. Most elegant prata I've had.
Came the Beef rendang ($23) recommended by the server. The beef was ridiculously soft and tender and so easy to chew. Very very good. However, the meat and the sauce almost seemed to be cooked separately. The meat has gotten very little flavours from the rendang sauce. I am not sure is it due to the rather good fish curry that diluted the taste of the beef rendang. I am disappointed. There is spiciness to the rendang but there is nothing else there to soothe my taste buds.
Jasmine rice costs $2. With GST and service charge, the bill comes up to $57 for 2. Service is very good, better than any other restaurant in a mall you could find in Singapore.
Violet Oon promises the high-end peranakan food, but it left me longing more for the food in Little India or in Joo Chiat where there are secret Indian and Peranakan dishes that should make every tourist and locals alike drool all over. With the amazing looking interiors, high prices and quality service, it is still worthy to try for a tourist looking for a comfortable experience. If you want an authentic experience, you'd be better off looking elsewhere.
