"When things start to get rowdy at El Rio, Virgil’s is right next door. The atmosphere here is much more chill, and the drinks are stiff and cheap. They also have a massive outdoor patio with a lot of picnic tables, strings lights, and heat lamps, too. (You can make reservations for parties of five or more). Just know it’s cash only." - Lani Conway

One of the few places in San Francisco with a great outdoor patio. The place gets packed on sunny days (obvs). Good place to meet a group of people as you can go inside or outside. It's only a few blocks from 24th Street BART/Muni. The cocktails are tasty. Cash only though.

They served up a really Great old fashion. My friend got a frozen drink that looked amazing. Cool looking place with candle light. Not huge and got a little crowded as the night went on. It was a little loud in there so we had to lean in to talk. Young crowd. This bar is being taken over by trendy hipsters

Great bar with a back patio and lots of space. Busy on the weekend and overflow for El Rio. Seriously great cocktail menu. My bartender was very helpful with selecting my choice of drink. They seem to be fine with outside food. There was pizza and cake on some of the tables. Not on my table tho :( Grabbed a burrito at Cancun down the street instead.

Some good things about this place but some drawbacks. They generously pour their bourbon, they have outdoor seating and two good spots for groups inside. The downside is that the outdoor seating can be reserved, so you might not be able to sit at a table, and not very conducive to standing around out there - just an odd setup. They don't have heaters outside (or maybe they just weren't on when I was there) so if it's a cold night, you'd better be dressed warmly if you opt for outside. The music was good, but it was incredibly loud. It was hard to carry on a conversation with anyone without screaming, which prompted an early departure.

Although I visit the Mission almost every other weekend, I'm surprised why it took me so long to experience the awesomeness of this place. From the outside, it looks like a tiny run of the mill bar. Virgil's has a patio to die for. It's just the perfect chill spot. I went there with my friends and got a great spot to chill with a couple of beers. I have heard great things about their margaritas as well. Guess this gives me a good excuse to come here again . Note that like most bars in the Mission, this is CASH only. Definite recommend from me

So...this place is great! I walked into what looked like a dive bar from the outside only to find that it is quite classy. (They were playing Island in the Stream, the version with Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers.) I ordered one of the specialty drinks, Warren Hellman, a ginger and whiskey drink. It was tasty sauce! I then walked to the back where there is a super nice patio with plenty of seating. If Rio is too packed, do yourself a favor and swing by this place!

Great drinks and they have fresh lime juice. Decent tequila selection and margaritas by the pitcher. The heated outdoor seating area is huge.

I describe this bar as "being at the kid's table at Thanksgiving". It shares a chain link fence with El Rio, which is always crowded and hopping. This is a great option if you want something more low-key, or with real, well-made cocktails.
