The 12 Best Soul Food Restaurants In Atlanta

"Sitting in a small strip mall on Cleveland Avenue, Walter’s patrons sometimes contend with other businesses’ customers for parking. The tussle outside proves worth it, though, because the restaurant’s assortment of meats (turkey wings, ribs, salisbury steak) and traditional sides is consistently good. Order the barbecue chicken, yams, and greens for a soul-soothing meal that reminds you of home. Who cares that you had to park in front of the barber shop to get to it?" - demarco williams, jacinta howard

17 Outstanding Soul Food Restaurants Around Atlanta

"The large, illuminated blue and yellow letters above the door help locate Walter’s from the street when exiting I-75 in south Atlanta. The hand-painted sign version on the window welcomes people inside for a hot plate. Grab a red tray and slide it down the rails for Salisbury steak swimming in a pan of gravy, crispy whole wings, smoked ribs, brisket, oxtails, and baked barbecue chicken. Grab peach cobbler for dessert." - Mike Jordan, Eater Staff

Google
I'm not a big fan of soul food, only because what people consider as soul food now looks like sloop & it's not good at all..... BUT baby, when I say this food was amazing, it was AMAZING. I got the vegetarian plate, I chose the Mac & Cheese, lima beans, greens, yams & for dessert peach cobbler. It was not over seasoned. Everything blended so well in my palate. I was more than satisfied. After several hrs, I was still full..lol

Google
Please give them a try. The price is good. The food gives home made. Mac n cheese sweet potatoes and fried chicken is my go to. When they dont have fried chicken the bbq chicken is really good. Hell its all good! Just try it! Oh and the donut place right next to them is really good

Google
Food was hot, fresh and tasty. I found a piece of plastic under my Turkey wing. I think it may have came from the gravy. I tried calling the business to complain about the issue or to see what type of resolution they could provide, but I didn’t get anyone to pick up. I’ll try again at another time.

Google
The BEST FOOD in town! Hands down!! Truly authentic SOMEBODY still got grandma and mama’s recipes! PLEASE dont change a thing!!!! You guys NAILED it!! 🔥👍🏾 don’t let the looks fool you, you don’t need fluff to know how to cook! This is a hidden gem! and great prices! A TRUE country cook KNOWS when you know what you’re doing and they definitely got it right! You won’t be disappointed. I’ve eaten at MANY places as a hobby upscale and all but nothing compares to Walter’s! I feel like I’m at grandmas Sunday table. I wish them much continued success!

Google
Great southern hospitality. The food was delicious it was seasoned just right and it wasn’t too salty.

James Reynolds

Google
The food is top-notch, feels good, and rocks you to sleep, Soul Food. Just like Momma used to good. Turkey wings, grave, Mac n cheese, cabbage, corn bread, and some slap your momma Peach Cobbler. I sat back after eating all of that and said DAMN! It's a little out of my way to go, but I drive around a lot and many times will past by there on my home. It's a stop now for me.

Deron Smithwick

Google
Walters is an old staple that has stood the test of time. The line may not move as fast as you like but the food is no frills good home cooking.

Yelp
Food was off the hook my only problem was the collard greens , I wonder do they sell baked beans cause that's what I'm ordering next time but The Salisbury Steak was a 9, The Mac and cheese was creamy a strong 8, The Collard Greens was a strong 5 just mid not the best, The rice underneath th Salisbury Steak complimented the Entree very nicely. In closing I will return no doubt

Yelp
Food was disgusting. I would never order from this place again. We did a group order. None of us were satisfied. However, I was the only person who had the nerve to call and complain. The mac and cheese was horrible and tasted absolutely nothing like mac and cheese. It was greasy af and bland af. When I first initially I was told I could get a refund. However when I called back to make sure I would still be able to once I got off work. I was told I couldn't get a refund and instead I could exchange it. Wtf, like the food was nasty af why would I want anything besides my money? That's insane

Yelp
Old school is the best way that I can describe it. It's almost a small cafeteria style restaurant with all the southern food or soul food as some people call it that you can think of. Well per the menu, I saw things from fried fish to fried chicken, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, Black-eyed peas turkey necks and I think oxtails. I tried fried fish where I had the option of catfish whiting and tilapia. Luckily, one of those three I like. I asked for a side of collard greens, but I got green beans. It was OK. It was still really good. I also had yams with my supper. It came with a big healthy slice of cornbread. I asked for some peach cobbler for dessert. I figured since I was getting all of that I might as well go all the way. They dropped my fish fresh so by the time I got home it was piping hot. Also by the time I got home, I forgot that I didn't grab my peach cobbler. After enjoying my dinner, I drove back to get my peach cobbler, and went to score of the last one. Everything was delicious. I have not had this kind of food in years. It was definitely good for my soul. Sweet ladies were here, be kind to them they deserve it.

Yelp
Food was amazing first time at this place since I moved to ATL. The wait is worth it. Porkchops was freshly cooked and the Mac and cheese was great if you want some soul food this place will not disappoint
google avatar

Pam F.

Yelp
ok food decent place , i'll go back, mainly because it convent they mess my order up last time,

Zanita B.

Yelp
Best soul food in the ATL hands down Love the pork chops Collard greens Mac n cheese

Yelp
I ate here for the first time today. The food was good. The service was great. It was quick and convenient to just walk in, have your plate made and you're on your way. It's not a fancy place but it definitely gets the job done efficiently. I wish the food was more seasoned but I do understand they have to accommodate for people with health conditions and things. I had the turkey wings, Mac and cheese and the collard greens. I'd rate the food an 7/10. Now if you add salt and pepper and some hot sauce it might be an 8/10. But I ate mine just how it came. I would go there again.

Shakeita G.

Yelp
Workers are kind and helpful. Food is great, everything melts in your mouth. Would visit Atlanta just for the Soul food

Tootie B.

Yelp
Food is Good taste like your grandma cooking Service could be a lil faster but besides that everything else is okay
google avatar

Jasmyn H.

Yelp
You can tell this place has been here for a while, the building definitely run down. However food was great! Had the Salisbury steak over rice with green beans and black eyed peas. Would visit again if ever in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm from out of town and I wanted some good soul food before I went home. Unfortunately, I did not receive that here. The food was greasy, the restaurant was dirty, and the Mac n cheese was watery. The lady serving the food had a nasty attitude and she was very impatient. Not to mention, they were out of most of the menu. It's sad to say, but I will never return.
google avatar

Aimes O.

Yelp
This spot was recommended by our Shuttle Driver who insisted that we try some "real soul food" on "this side of Atlanta." Now that I think about it, I feel as though maybe the owner of Walter's and our driver have some sort of deal. Nothing is wrong with that! lol Walter's staff were very accommodating and friendly. The food was reasonably priced, yet not anything to run home and tell your mama. Most of the menu items were not available; thus had me wondering when DID they have everything actually available. Food was subpar. We each ordered something different: Beef Tips with Collard Greens and Mac & Cheese, Meatloaf over a bed of Rice, Salisbury Steak over a bed of Rice, and Smothered Turkey Leg with Cabbage. One thing I wished for was the food being a bit more hot. It was luke-warm to say the least. Of all of the food, I must say that the Mac and Cheese was actually pretty bomb!
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
I usually get the veggie plate but all of their food is very authentic and absolutely delicious. Highly recommended. Support local businesses!
google avatar

Joey K.

Yelp
Turkey let dinner- 20% banana pudding-95%. Mac-95% pineapple cake- 95% greens- 75% yam 95% Turkey leg dinner- the dark meat was over cooked. That crazy!!! How the hell do you overcook leg. Banana pudding- very banana and nice and cakey!!! Mac~ it felt like every corner piece you desired. Great. Pineapple cake- very fruity Greens- semi good flavor. Need little more like 20% more flavor but not too much. I would like a neck bone with the green. Yam- it was great. It like your mom made it. No like your grandma made it. The sides were the str of the show!! Just like Fab said 'Cause the entrée ain't as good Without somethin' on the side, you know? We need them sides. But fix the main. Because we as man goes go back to the main. Lol.
google avatar

Xavier M.

Yelp
Well, the two stars is for the polite service I received. To bad the food is what matters. It's cold, no seasoning, and the macaroni is not seasoned. I'm literally sitting here and starving and can't eat it. The cornbread was dry, the turkey wing tastes like vinegar , the Mac and cheese forget about it, the cabbage tastes like nothing. Maybe the cook was tired from Sunday..... and whomever said it tastes like grandma's cooking... I'm sorry your grandmother can't cook, and she must be 37. Not here for the food and maybe wouldn't be as disappointed if I wasn't this hungry
google avatar

Jasmine B.

Yelp
I don't know who made the macaroni and cheese, but THEY DID THAT! The collards were seasoned well. The cornbread wasn't overly sweet. The chicken was pretty good no complaints. The only thing I didn't care for was the rice and the flavor of the gravy. Besides that, I will definitely eat here again.
google avatar

Yolanda R.

Yelp
I ate here ONCE, at the urging of a friend. The food was terrible. Mac n cheese was very salty and the rest of my order was blah. Awful. To top the bad food off, the service sucked. Everybody has bad days and I tell you, this was a bad day. I never returned. FAIL UU.
google avatar

Amber M.

Yelp
Ehhh i tried to give them another chance . The food was just too greasy and not fresh . Everything been sitting under the lamp for hours . The sweet tea was disgusting! It tasted burnt and just nasty . The Mac and cheese was okay could've been better . BBQ Wings tasted like grease soaked in BBQ and the meat was pink . Cabbage was soggy .
google avatar

Farrah S.

Yelp
This is my go to on Sundays!!! The food is always great and the service is quick and courteous!!! Hands DOWN Walters is the best soul food spot to go in Atlanta!! Parking is great as well!!
google avatar

Yessica H.

Yelp
Would never come here again. I came with a couple of friends and my service dog which is hypoallergenic and only 10 pounds, soon as I walk in this lady basically starts coming at me disrespectful, denies me service because of my service dog and as I walk out she continues to make disrespectful commentary about how unsanitary it is and then thinks it's ok to lick her hand while packaging a to go order using no gloves nor washing her hands.
google avatar

Simone S.

Yelp
Food is usually very good. Well seasoned and portions generous. The staff is friendly. All entrees come with two sides and there are always lots of offering. The bbq ribs are bomb. Love the turkey wings and fried pork chops. The macaroni & cheese is the best I've had except my own in a long time! Also, the place is always very clean!! Check them out if your on the south side.

Kimberly B.

Yelp
There has been many complaints that this restaurant on Cleveland Ave has stated they are affiliated with Walter's Soul Food Cafe in Union City, this is an false statement and what's really sad is they are trying to get business the easy way riding on Walter's coat tail. Walter and Lucille have put many years into making their restaurant what it is. Please don't let these owners get away with what may appear to be duplicating their recipes and using as their own. If you're looking for Walter Carter he's in Union City. Go patronize the King and Queen of Soul Food. They would love to see you
google avatar

Alana M.

Yelp
I'm from NYC I came looking for real good soul food. I love Ray's southern food and Kelz Kitchen so I thought all the food in Atl was fire until I tried this place pure garbage wasted 65 dollars on bland uncooked cold food. Run far away from this place
google avatar

Melody N.

Yelp
This food is disgusting please don't waste your money at this place. They gave us sour food reheated rice and the chicken gravy was horrible. The location need major improvements and a better menu. The food is just bad overall I don't recommend this place to anyone it will make you sick.
google avatar

H. H.

Yelp
Went here looking for cornbread only and left with a whole plate! Food looked like good home cooking and tasted just like grandma made it! Very delicious! I even came back 2 days later for another fix! I'm hooked!! I don't eat pork and was relived that the veggies don't have meat in them!! Yums!!!

Skylar M.

Yelp
Very popular and known but the food is OK, I've had better . Also everything on the menu wasn't available so I had to settle for something and it wasn't worth it . Service was okay.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
if you find yourself in Atlanta topping off your rental car before the return to Hartsfield, and can't help but notice an incredibly delicious smell - it's Walters Soul Food. Tucked back next to a Shell station in an otherwise unnoticeable strip mall. Was the floor greasy? Yes. Was the location dodgy? Yes. Was all food in styrofoam? Yes. But what Walters lacks in decor and location, is made up in the quality of their food. Thinking I'd get the brisket and ribs, a polite gal with a charmingly southern voice recommended the oxtails. They were spectacular, sticky in a richly reduced sauce. The greens, Mac n cheese, corn bread all them just left me warm n fuzzy. A genuine joint.
google avatar

Debra C.

Yelp
The food is Amazing!! My husband and I are visiting from CA. The only let down was there were not any desserts but the food is great.

Lonnie B.

Yelp
I like this place the food is alright it worth the money but it's really not seasoned I guess all patrons can't have spices .. they often run out of anything you want but whatever is left will fill you up the old ladies on Sunday take their time fixing your plate nawl it is one lady can keep up with the line the floor are dirty hell the whole place kind of dirty but don't let that stop you from supporting a black business especially on Sunday and don't forget the desserts never tried them the cake look like school cafeteria cake so you know it's not store bought me myself will be coming back not soon but later....

Erica L.

Yelp
I ordered the wing plate with yams and collards and cornbread. Everything was remarkably good! My teenage daughter googled this place and she was more than satisfied. Note: Don't judge this place from the outside!
google avatar

Ronisha W.

Yelp
I used to go to Walters for years. I went today and got a salisbury steak plate. It came with one salisbury steak the macaroni was disgusting and bland no flavor and the yams were raw. I am bery upset I got two plates in the second one I got a veggie plate. The green beans were sour, the yams again were raw, the macaroni was disgusting and the only thing that was good was the cabbage I paid $20 for some garbage. I came all the way from Henry County so I'm very pissed.
google avatar

Shawn M.

Yelp
This place has some of the best soul food! Initially I stopped here on the way to work because I saw that they had soul food and I thought that it would be a good place to get it! Upon entering the building and are hit in the nose with DELICIOUS SMELLS. Walter's is a very simple cafeteria-style structure you where you pick out of several rotating meats and sides . I can say that you can hardly go wrong! My food was delicious and the environment was calm and clean.
google avatar

MzRichie R.

Yelp
Great choice for soul food when you don't feel like Cooking! Fresh food good service...great prices!
google avatar

Antonett J.

Yelp
I was tired of eating fast food from around this area so I have passed this place a few times and decided to check it out since I love soul food. I ordered Mac and cheese, turkey wings, cornbread and the casserole. It was absolutely disgusting. I hate to write reviews like this and I wasn't going to but the food was so bad I got sick. The Mac had little taste. The casserole was terrible. The turkey wings and rice was like tasteless soup and the cornbread was straight up dry. About $9 wasted. And a long time on the toilet and throwing up. Maybe I didn't order the right food or come at the right time. (Came around the late afternoon) But it's not your moms or grandmas or uncles cooking.
google avatar

Ty D.

Yelp
Don't go here for anything! The food isn't anything to write home about and service is terrible. When we walked in there was no air, just a couple of fans and it's summer time in Atlanta so it was hot AF. The older lady serving food acted as though I was inconveniencing her just by ordering. I asked for catfish and she said, we ain't got it. I asked for another fish that was written on their CHALKBOARD menu that they can easily erase and then she finally says we don't have fish today. So I step aside to look at the menu and let someone else go in front of me to order. To keep it simple, I ask for a veggie plate. I said can I get yams, she immediately cuts me off and says, we ain't got no yams. At this point someone brings yams out from the back. Now I'm only asking for what I can see (since they can't be bothered to update their chalkboard menu)--yams, mac & cheese, greens & cabbage. At this point one of the young ladies working uncovers all the veggies and I can see that they have black eyed peas. The lady fixing the plate hasn't put cabbage on my plate yet, so I ask her to swap it for black eyed peas. She gives me more attitude and then when I asked for plain rice, she says that's extra. We get up to the counter to pay and the cashier has the total as $30 for a veggie plate and salsberry steak. When I said something he starts re-typing and then says $20. The food was over priced and wasn't even good. The mac & cheese was dry, the cornbread had an odd texture, the greens were decent - the best thing about them was that they were spicy. The best thing on my plate were the black eyed peas even without the rice. Over priced awful food, terrible service from the lady fixing the food & inconsistent pricing. Don't waste your time or money. This is a poor example of a black owned soul food. I won't be back. This place might have been great in the past, but whoever is running it now is running it into the ground. They were removed from grub hub & won't be open long as Atlanta has TONS of excellent soul food restaurants with much better quality food and much better service.
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
My guilty pleasure. A cowoker and I had to stop going here for lunch for fear of not being able to make it back to the office for fear of the "the itis" setting in. My advice: try everything on the menu unless you just don't flat out eat certain things (i.e. pork, etc.). You can't go wrong with Walter's. I wouldn't say you get alot of food for your money (I don't know of any soul food restaurants that are heavy handed with the serving spoon), but I will say that they aren't stingy with the servings. You will leave fulfilled, and if you dine in you might find that you will need a to go box depending on what you order.
google avatar

LaShawn M.

Yelp
If I could've given no stars I would've ! I just ordered a veggie plate and let me just say nothing and I mean nothing was good... they even had the audacity to serve old cabbage I mean they should know not to sell day old cabbage period let alone days old... I use to frequent this place mainly when my girlfriend wanted peach cobbler but we will never and I mean NEVER eat here again! Save your money... just cook!

Nena O.

Yelp
This was a joke as well., the Mac and cheese is dry and taste off. The potatoes were well. They were real and not stiff real butter like. The Salisbury steak was a kroger paddie burger drenched in can Campbells gravy. The corn bread i didn't touch. Again this food was dry and lacked flavor. If i was really hungry i would spend the $7 and not a penny more
google avatar

Aleesa W.

Yelp
The food is really good!! The atmosphere inside isn't desirable. The service needs tons of work.
google avatar

Brandi B.

Yelp
Flavorful delicious soul food. The manager and staff were very nice and patient. Highly recommend for locals and tourists wanting to try real southern soul food
google avatar

Kashmere J.

Yelp
I had the turkey wing dinner with macaroni and greens. The turkey wings r delicious the greens r alright u need to add some love and the macaroni is kool. I also got a vegetable plate. Green beans with come with potatoes inside they were alright a lil vinegary. Sweet potatoes were nasty they dumped a whole jar of cinnamon n it. The corn bread taste like jiffy it was the bomb.
google avatar

Sylvia W.

Yelp
Never again. The food tasted old. I don't mind instant mashed potatoes but these were runny. The green beans were mush and the mac & cheese was tasteless. I hadn't been to Walter's for years now I remember why. Biggest waste of my eight dollars!
google avatar

Jamarcus T.

Yelp
How small of an impression must a restaurant leave on you so that you don't remember eating there until walking inside? Well crap, Walter's holds that distinction! On the hunt for decent soul food, I stopped in on a Thursday evening and ordered a rib tip meal, which comes with two sides. Took about 5 minutes for them to let me know that they didn't have any more, so I went ahead with the veggie plate. The veggie plate is a four veggie plate that checks in at just at $6. I thought their selection was a little smaller than i'm used to, with only corn, collard greens, mac & cheese, white rice, yams and green beans. I ordered two orders of collard greens, an order of yams and an order of Mac & Cheese. Collards had a weird spiciness to them that was overpowering and the mac & cheese tasted very oily, just not very good. The yams were incredibly sweet, but also lacking any real flavor (where's the nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, guys??). Portion sizes were nice, and if you're someone who likes the flavor of their food, the price is very fair (the rib tip meal was $8.75 for example...very cool). I guess I should've known that based on this place being a ghost town (not a single soul sitting to eat and only an older couple in front of me ordering to go) and the fact that I didn't realize i'd been here before is proof enough that yea, i'm still on the look out for decent soul food.
google avatar

K P.

Yelp
This place is great for real soul food! Came in during lunch out only con was line was out the door (which is a good thing) and it was great and worth the wait! Staff are friendly and attentive willing to help you. Lots of items on the line and I gotta say, the baked chicken was amazing. Tender, juicy, and not dried out like most places. The sides were also great (wish I could've tried them all) but you can't go wrong with the Mac n cheese and the collard greens. I'll be Back for sure everytime work takes me to that area! Great job Walters! On a side note: when I went my first time, saw the man himself there, Charles Barkley! He said this is his go too spot! So it's also mine too now!
google avatar

Trini S.

Yelp
Chicken was cold and dry, cabbage was not tasty at all...i tasted it and realized it was a waste of money. will never go back.

Hiren P.

Yelp
This hole-in-the-wall has been on my ATL restaurant bucket list for some time now. So I finally decided to cross it off my list and it surely did not disappoint. While there are plenty of options on the menu, and I plan to cross off all of them, for my first visit I ordered the baked chicken, mac and cheese and collard green. First, let me say the baked chicken was amazing! The meat was so moist and tender it literally fell off the bone. Second, the Mac and cheese was made to perfection. It was the perfect combination of creaminess while still maintaining the perfect mac. Finally, the collard greens were perfectly seasoned. The customer service and cleanliness were 100 which sealed the deal for my next visit sooner rather than later.

Dosheelaben P.

Yelp
I have been coming here for a few weeks now and I can't get enough. I seriously wake up craving Walter's food. My favorite has to be the collard greens, mac n cheese and yams with the fried chicken. You can tell the food is made with proper care and attention with quality ingredients. Lately I've noticed they are very generous with the portions too. The place is very clean and simple. No need for the frills when the food speaks for itself.

JaRon B.

Yelp
When We Visit Atlanta We Make It Our Business To Stop Here BUT That Has Changed Due To HORRIBLE Customer Service From The Short Elderly Woman She's Sooooo Rude Y'all Either Need To Move Her To Back Or Out The Door!!!!
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday at 1:30 and there were 20-30 people inside. I ordered rib tips, dressing, Mac and cheese, an extra side of collards, yams, and lemon cake. Food was on point. Hot, seasoned well, and good value for the price. Only things they should work on is don't serve canned yams. I don't know if this was a back up but I know canned when I get them. Also... make fresh lemonade!!! That country time powdered mix is not good. Lemon juice, water, sugar, maybe some honey or agave for a twist on a classic. Otherwise everything was good. I wonder how business and quality of food is during the week with all the negative reviews. We will be back!
