How small of an impression must a restaurant leave on you so that you don't remember eating there until walking inside? Well crap, Walter's holds that distinction! On the hunt for decent soul food, I stopped in on a Thursday evening and ordered a rib tip meal, which comes with two sides. Took about 5 minutes for them to let me know that they didn't have any more, so I went ahead with the veggie plate. The veggie plate is a four veggie plate that checks in at just at $6. I thought their selection was a little smaller than i'm used to, with only corn, collard greens, mac & cheese, white rice, yams and green beans. I ordered two orders of collard greens, an order of yams and an order of Mac & Cheese.
Collards had a weird spiciness to them that was overpowering and the mac & cheese tasted very oily, just not very good. The yams were incredibly sweet, but also lacking any real flavor (where's the nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, guys??). Portion sizes were nice, and if you're someone who likes the flavor of their food, the price is very fair (the rib tip meal was $8.75 for example...very cool).
I guess I should've known that based on this place being a ghost town (not a single soul sitting to eat and only an older couple in front of me ordering to go) and the fact that I didn't realize i'd been here before is proof enough that yea, i'm still on the look out for decent soul food.
