Coming to Denver? Thinking Seafood?
While I agree, that is not what one normally thinks of when they head to the mile high city equidistant between both coasts, but gosh, I really have to urge you to join me in busting that trope.
Part of a small, but prestigious group of Water Grill restaurants in about six major cities, the Denver location is just a stones throw from Union Station downtown. When you walk in you arrive in a wonderfully nautical designed and large dining area that welcomes visitors into a comfortable yet upscale environment. Plenty of choices for dining spaces, from booths, tables (large and small) and nooks and crannies give you sense of community yet some privacy.
After ordering wine and our meals, the server arrived with 2 large sour dough rolls with a sea salt whipped butter to start things off. What a great pleaser to start the palette (and to accompany our wine).
The menu is wide, with whole fish selections as well as specialties of the house. If only one trip here is possible, it is a difficult situation to be in to be limited to just one or two choices. We just had to try the Peruvian Sea Scallops and oh my, we are so glad that we started there. This concoction is a minced and reconstituted scallop served on the half shell that is really to die for. If raw seafood is your thing, this is a must; if you're unsure, you still need to try this.
The Wild Spanish Octopus as an appetizer is served along with fingerling potatoes, roasted olives and tomato and lightly coated with Olive Oil. While very good, it was not the best Octopus we've had, just a bit on the chewy side.
Our main choice was particularly difficult with the intriguing specialities, but in the end the whole Black Bass was the route we went. Perfectly grilled without any of the assortment of prep styles they offer, allowed us to savor the natural texture and flavor of the fish, which was again, outstanding. Thinking we'd need a side we did the Crispy Polenta which was a great accompaniment and was a very generous portion that capped out a great meal.
