Where to Enjoy a Glass of Chardonnay This Summer in San Diego | Eater

"Sushi rolls, PEI mussels, and oysters on the half shell make fresh seafood the undeniable star of the menu at Waterbar San Diego. But the vegetarian options aren’t just an afterthought — roasted cauliflower in brown butter ponzu with togarashi almonds or roasted baby carrots with creme fraiche and crumbled walnuts allow Harken Chardonnay’s warm notes of butter and Bosc pear to shine." - Vox Creative

Pretty nice restaurant overlooking Pacific Beach. Food prices are on the higher end, the taste of the food was decent, but needed something more for a higher review. The calamari appetizer dish was a little greasy. The fried fish from the fish and chips was good but the fries tasted "off". Scallops were made perfect but the combination on the plate with the blanched peas and carrots lacked some flavor. Also had a sushi plate that was tasty.

We came in on a Saturday around 6 for dinner. It had a good crowd, but we got in right away for a table for 4. Good food and service over looking the beach. we hung out for a few hours. As we were leaving, it was turning in to a night club with a cover charge of what I believe was 40 bucks.

Summer and Michael were absolutely amazing! Their hospitality made the experience unforgettable. I highly recommend this spot to anyone new to town — it’s the perfect place to kick off your vacation.. Awesome place with a view of pacific beach.Great food. Great prices ! 10/10 recommend.

Google
Limited seating against the ocean window view but beautiful if you get lucky and get a table there. The staff was nice and opened the giant window next to the table so we could see and hear the beach. Went during midday and again for breakfast, and both times were amazing and the food was great. The espresso martinis are great but a little pricey yet well worth the experience of sipping one while smelling the ocean and enjoying the breeze from just above street level. Definitely recommend for anyone visiting or out for a night.

Google
Good food and drinks. Happy hour has great sushi roll specials and drinks. Happy hour is from 3 to 6.

Google
Great location and views! Good drinks. Clam chowder with bread bowl was pretty good- sourdough bowl was the best part. I had the sweet and spicy wings, good flavor and presentation, wings were a bit dry. My wife had the fish and chips, which were good. Drinks on the pricey side. Great service and atmosphere.

Google
Busy but it was valentines dinner… so they were slammed! Ambience was nice with ocean views! A bit loud but cute. Dinner was delicious. Recommend the ceviche, wagyu steak, calamari and truffle fries

Google
Great looking restaurant with a killer view of the ocean. A huge selection of liquor on display. We enjoyed our meal and left happy and full. The pricing is pretty reasonable. We tried the Lobster Roll, Clam Chowder, Double Smash Burger, and Fish & Chips. Everything was delish. A great place to enjoy overall. We parked in their lot directly behind the restaurant. They offer 2,hours of free parking.

Yelp
I've frequented Waterbar to go out at night but it was my first time eating here for a work dinner! I ordered the frozen watermelon margarita for a drink and the fish and chips for my entree and I was pleasantly surprised. The watermelon margarita was wonderful - nice and refreshing. For the fish and chips, the batter was light, airy, and perfectly crispy and the fish was tasty. The fries were unfortunately cold and soggy. I do wish that there was another piece of fish because I was still hungry after my meal. I was surprised with the service here! We had a large party of 12 and our server was very attentive and kind to us and he came in to check on us throughout our meal. Waterbar has such a cool and fun ambiance! The view of the water is the best part of this spot. There's plenty of tables, booths, and bar seating and it turns into a bar at night with music and dancing!

Yelp
I had to leave for a flight and wanted to stop in for a quick lunch and drinks and I was super happy with the food/service! I've always been walked by Waterbar and know it's always packed but going at lunch, it is easy! It definitely is pricey but anywhere busy and on the ocean, pretty normal. Oysters were great and I will definitely be back! Severer was ready to go and knew about leaving and she was on itttt! Thank you the experience!

Yelp
What a wonderful place to be! From the outside, it looks like an old building, but we were astonished when we stepped inside. The ocean views and modern interior immediately caught our attention and brought a smile to our faces. We had been enjoying a nice walk on PB, but as the weather started to turn cloudy and chilly, we decided to seek refuge here and enjoy a drink and a bite to eat. My husband opted for a beer, while I tried their Chasing Sunsets cocktail, which I deeply enjoyed despite finding it a bit too sweet for a second one. I switched to a glass of wine after. We ordered their shrimp and fish ceviche, and it was absolutely delicious! Served with chips, it made for the perfect evening

Yelp
This place has such a fun vibe upstairs, the views of the beach are perfect for sunset and they have TVs all around the bar to watch that "special game!" Our server, was extremely knowledgeable about the menu, and although she had a lot of tables to attend to, she checked in with us quite frequently. We started with the spicy California roll. I know, I know the most "basic" but this one was so good! The spicy aïoli was not hot and gave the roll a fun twist on the OG flavor. I ordered a glass of wine for their $2 off per glass special and my husband got a Moscow Mule, garnished with lime wedges. He ordered the chicken Caesar salad, which was almost gone before I took a photo, and I ordered the seasonal vegetable bowl with coconut rice and curry shrimp. The curry sauce was a bit thick and creamy, which gave the whole bowl a nice flavor. Next time, I will try the clam chowder bread bowl!
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely delicious restaurant overlooking Pacific Beach. My husband and I enjoyed our meals and the quick service. I had the most tasty vegetable curry with chicken. I wish we had pattypan squash near us that I could attempt to recreate this dish. I just ate it a couple of hours ago and I am dreaming of going back to get it again!

Yelp
Customer service at the bar sucks. One of the bartenders was just very rude and blunt. The attitude was bothered if you ask him anything. We asked if my friend can replace her drink if she did not like it. He responded NO, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO READ THE INGREDIENTS. It totally turned me off from this place. In addition, I ordered food and a drink and the bartender took my credit card rather than wait for you to pay at the end. I asked if we could pay at the end but he said no we have to keep your credit card until you are done. This is the weirdest behavior and customer service. The place is beautiful and definitely worth a visit in the morning or during the day light but make sure to do a reservation if you wanna face the ocean.

Yelp
Excellent venue and location right off of the beach. Great views and open concept for fresh air. Service was efficient and personable. Nice selection of cocktails and beer/wine list. Solid seafood offerings. Excited to come back again!

Yelp
Beautiful view and Thursdays they have live music, which I was surprised by, but enjoyed. The appetizers sounded a lot better than the actual dishes, so that's what my date and I decided to go with for our dinner. I was really excited to try the Spanish Octopus from here, but they were sadly out of it. We started with the Oysters, which were very average. The Nigiri we got to try was fresh, but some came with wasabi on top, so I couldn't eat it, which was very sad. The Ahi Tuna Poke was okay. It had a lot of flavor, but the amounts were off, so the flavor wasn't quite right. The Roasted Cauliflower had too much dressing, so it was a bit soggy by the time I got to try it. Overall, the place is only okay. The view is the best part about it.
google avatar

Yelp
Water bar is a classic spot on the beach for drinks and/or food. It also has a very lively vibe and plays fun music! The drinks are decent but the food is not the best in my opinion (speaking from only getting fish tacos). They just did not have much flavor and felt like there was something missing! My friends got the fish and chips and burger and both were not in love with the food. Overall, super fun and cool place for the location but you are definitely paying for the ambiance!
google avatar

Kallie M.

Yelp
This classic spot right on the water in PB was impressive and beautiful. The upper level takes you to a nautical themed restaurant with windows that open up to the ocean breeze. The service we experienced was fantastic and followed up with great cocktails and food. I always come by during lunch so it's never crowded and the service is always quick.

Yelp
My gf wanted to take me to WB to check it and PB out. We got there and grabbed some drink. We got the word for last call on food so I ordered some clam chowder and calamari. The clam chowder was good. I could have done without the bacon bits. It added a bit of texture I didn't care for. The chunks of potato and clam were sufficient and made it enjoyable. The calamari was also delicious. It was a good serving size and the chopped peppers were sweet and tangy and added another flavor complexity. It was really good and I would love to try it again. We stayed around for the transition from bar restaurant to night club. The staff puts in a lot of work for that transition. The vibe for the club is nice, but the crowd is far to young for me. Nice spot and should definitely be checked out.

Yelp
Great views of the ocean and walkers/runners. We stopped in here after we strolled a little bit along mission beach. The service was excellent and they catered to every need. Lots of food variety I will say this is on the pricey end of most of the places we visited but by no means will break the bank. We had great cocktails several different apps and the poke was absolutely delicious. It came with fried wonton chips which really made it pop. The oysters here were large but I have to say not my favorite at all, lacking flavor. I would definitely come back here and check out the happy hour on my next trip out. This is definitely a great pop and spot as you're strolling through mission Beach.

Yelp
Pre New Year's Eve! Love Coming to the beach when it's cloudy and with the recent storms, we got our wish. I typically go to Woody's or Konos for breakfast but it was nearly 2:00 p.m. So we called an audible and visited the Waterbar Everything about our visit was spot on, from the hostess to our wonderful server. I ordered oysters and a wonderful salmon roll with yellowtail nigiri. This was some of the best sushi I've had and talk about fresh. (The yellow tail melted in our mouths). Wait for a window seat because it's worth it, you'll not get a better view anywhere. What a way to start the New Year celebration.

Yelp
What a cool spot! Came here twice this past weekend with my girlfriends for a bachelorette party. Good drinks and a great atmosphere! This spot is located right on the beach which is amazing so you seriously can't beat the views. They ID you as you enter and then you head upstairs to the bar area. There's a few different bar areas inside, and then they have a pretty large outside area, too. We of course being from hot Vegas opted for the outside area to enjoy so we could take in all the beautiful beach weather! On Friday afternoon it wasn't too busy but when we came on Saturday it was packed! However our server did a killer job of coming around to make sure we were well taken care of. I got a margarita and then also some type of gin drink they had on the menu. All our drinks were so good. We also did some type of mixed shot and that was delicious, too. At one point, my friend spilled her drink and our server came and brought a brand new one for her without any extra charge. I also ordered the lobster tacos. WOW! Chefs kiss. SOOOO GOOD! It was seriously some of the most tasty lobster tacos I've ever had. And only $7 for each one. Not bad! Would absolutely come back here again because it really is such a cool atmosphere and spot. Honestly all the vacation vibes!

Yelp
We were walking down and was trying to find a place to eat and saw this place. It's a a very chill vibe. It's very spacious, lots of big tables to accommodate for a big party. Had great views of the ocean to enjoy your meal or drinks I would recommend this place more for drinks than for a speacial meal. Everything we ordered was okay at best. Started off with the oysters and the after taste was not for it. First time I did not want to finish the oysters. The wings are more sweet than spicy. The fish sandwich fell apart and was kinda hard to eat. Wasn't crispy as expected. The lobster spinach dip was kinda fishy. The clam chowder was stingy on the clams. Steak and eggs were okay. We weren't very impressed with the food. Everything was very bland. It's more for when your drunk and starving. The drinks we got were good tho! This is a nice place to wind down for drinks in my opinion. As for the server, she was great. Very attentive, until we told her to not take the birthday girl card to pay and she took it. Who does that?!
google avatar

Serena R.

Yelp
The view was beautiful which is what drew us to the restaurant to begin with. However after our first round of drinks and starters, we decided we did not want to stay long enough to order a main course or another round of drinks. It was a Friday afternoon and seemed very slow as far as the restaurant being busy and service was a bit slower as well. The food looked delicious but left much to be desired and was a bit bland.
google avatar

Adrian M.

Yelp
Good food. But our server (Alexis) lacked any warmth, welcoming personality. Rather gave us rash sped up responses like she was tired of serving us before approaching us. Didn't do anything but take orders quickly and then gone before anyone could ask anything more.

Diana P.

Yelp
Came in, there was no people or busy at all and it took 1 hour and a half to get attended people who came in 30 or 40 min after got their food before they even got our order. 2 hours and we never received our food thankfully he didnt make us pay for our drinks its the least they could have done after they ignored us the entire time. Was craving the lobster roll and i never got it.

Yelp
The 3 stars is only for the amazing view. I will never ever desire going to Waterbar for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner and will never ever ever crave any food items or drinks, service, atmosphere. The quality of food is very low mess your stomach up variety. However, if you want to chill and view the sunset or just look out into the ocean then you have to purchase items so you can stay. Working around that you can say "I'm waiting for friends, can I have a bottle of water." That can probably buy you some time of not ordering the atrocity of food they have. Or weak watered down drinks. After 30 mins, maybe order the cheapest items but dont eat them. Like fries, mac n chez, clam chowder. Those items are under $9. Probably cheaper @ happy hour, no HH on Fridays or wknds. Even the vegan chocolate cake is as dry as eating sand. I ordered the $20 hamburger, it fell to pieces after the first bite, I regret eating it. The only purpose this place serves is to watch a sunset when the day is clear. The place can get packed with a surprisingly long line of eager 20-somethings clamoring to get inside after the sun is gone. I suppose you can wait around if you want to hunt young drunk babes but it will cost you lots of $$$ and a hit to your tummy. Prices are stupid, laughable, moronic. Play it smart and an hour long sunset watch can cost you less than $20.

Yelp
Hey, WaterBar...thank you for being amazing! We started the day early with drinks on a Sunday morning and just so happened to get Jasmine and Jackson - the J/J duo! They took care of us so well that when we decided to meandered down the boardwalk, getting another drink and an unnamed famous place, we decided to return. We loved the service, the personalization and the attention while sitting at the bar! We randomly made reservations for dinner because well the sunset is amazing and why not! Destiny took over our service at a window table and had an awesome bottle (or 2) of wine. Dinner came after an appetizer so we could slow play the yumminess of what we ordered. Unfortunately, my salmon was a bit under done, unless you like sushi (which they have) and I sent it back. I told Destiny about it being under done and immediately she was like I got it and I'll take care of it. Less than 10 mins later, my Vegetable Curry with Salmon came out and it was PERFECT! The chef Mike (you are awesome!) came out and personally apologized and made sure it was good! Who does that these days!? We had such an amazing time, service and experience at WaterBar. We come every year to stay at the Crystal Pier Cottages and this is definitely a redo. Thanks WaterBar for making an ordinary Sunday,
google avatar

Yelp
Waterbar is always so fun to go to! The music is so good during the weekend and the food is pretty good too. I came here for Halloween and it was kind of dead though. The bartenders are super nice and responsive!
google avatar

Yelp
A yummy brunch spot with great views! Came here with a large group on a Saturday and we got seated right away at like 11 am. Super yummy food, good portion sizes, and reasonably priced! No bottomless mimosas :(( but the drinks are all very tasty regardless. Good service as well, the waitress was very attentive and kept checking in. Get the green omelet and add bacon! SO good.
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
Came here a few years ago before Covid and felt like they had the best lobster roll in town (this was after being in Boston mind you). Stopped by again earlier this week and can confirm it is still one of the best in SD! It is a tad bit on the pricey side but they don't skimp on the meat. During the middle of the day during the week it's easy to snatch a spot by the window to catch the views. Bonus points that day because the music also happened to be on point with the mood. Perfect spot for a midday retreat with quality food and deals everyday of the week!
google avatar

Isa J.

Yelp
Great lobster roll - a little overpriced but so good. The spinach dip here is also amazing! The high top table and chairs are a little uncomfortable and were a little unstable.
google avatar

Hugh J.

Yelp
This place is great. I got the fish and chips the Alaskan cod is to die for and they have great Mac and cheese if your around pacific beach and looking for lunch or dinner this would be my recommendation. The view from the restaurant is amazing. The restaurant is on the second floor and has a great view over the ocean and of the pier. Great service they are constantly running around making sure that you have everything you want.
google avatar

Nina A.

Yelp
I came into waterbar Sunday evening, expecting a chill evening. I was blown away when I realized that they have nigiri, and it was so tasty! I was served at the back bar by Keegan who made a bomb michelada and he gave such great service!! The sunset added to the ambience. Overall, it was a great experience and I'll be back soon!
google avatar

Kim G.

Yelp
Love this spot. The food is as good as the view, and the staff is delightful and attentive. We started with a dozen oysters which were tiny and tasty, the fried calamari with a delicious dipping sauce and the fried cauliflower with the best sauce ever. These delicious apps were enjoyed with fun, signature cocktails - I had the seafood Bloody Mary, daughter had a vodka drink with cucumber and mint, and hubby had a whiskey coffee drink. Then I had the green omelet which was fantastic - spinach, zucchini, asparagus, green onions, and cheese. Daughter and hubby split the hangover burger that had bacon and a perfectly fried egg. We all had an espresso martini for dessert. This isn't an inexpensive place but worth every penny. I cannot wait to come again. Oh, lots of screens so we got to watch all the NFL games too!
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
We went as a family to celebrate my daughter's birthday. We went with a group of six, and Waterbar can manage groups quite well. One of the main reasons we chose this place was the Seafood menu. We had a 7 pm reservation and upon arrival found that parking was quite difficult. Waterbar has private parking, but nobody told us. I ended up dropping the group off and then went on a 30-minute hunt for a parking spot, which I ended up finding in a garage a block away, at a cost of $20. The venue had a long line outside, which the group was able to by-pass due to the reservation. The place is large and LOUD. Not what any of us would have expected from the pictures we saw. The limited menu for Presidents weekend was outrageously priced, with the most expensive item being well over $200. Our tab ended up being almost $500 Service was super friendly but slow as the place was busy. The servers did their best, but there wasn't enough staff to go around. Sorry peops, this was indoor seating (not directly on the beach), food was good, but not outstanding. Parking sucked. The place is too loud. The best thing I have to say is thumbs up to the wait staff.
google avatar

Jeffrey C.

Yelp
View was amazing, service was awesome and the food was pretty good - the fish tacos were nothing to write home about but still good...hence the 3.5 star review. Quite the premium price tag, comes with the view, but I would likely venture to Pacific Coast Grill next time as a better alternative...
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
The food over all was good, but our server was not friendly, didn't even give us his name, and very short with us. The prices was to be expected for a seafood place and wasn't overly priced. I would come back, but would want a different server. Came here for a late lunch so it wasn't busy.

Andrea-Gabrielle A.

Yelp
Sat at the bar with a friend, ordered a drink., they refused me cause my ID was expired. Fine. My friend orders a drink, we wait, same guy comes back saying I couldn't even be sat at the bar. Why would you wait till a drink was ordered? Weird... and the DJ was playing bad music so I wouldn't have stayed long anyways. Take me back to NYC asap.

Rhys W.

Yelp
The door men and bouncers don't listen. Listen to the loudest person and that's it. Stopped a coworker getting her ID stolen and was told to leave because of it.
google avatar

Sierra S.

Yelp
This place was empty for memorial weekend brunch and I have NO idea why because this was one of the best brunches we've had. Service was awesome and our group of 6 had no complaints about the food. Will come back here anytime we're back in San Diego.
google avatar

Lysa D.

Yelp
Cool spot on the top floor overlooking the water. We sat at the bar and ordered sangria and a bloody mary. Sangria was good but the bloody mary was not. We ordered oysters and they were good. We also got the pigs in a blanket breakfast sandwich with a cheddar biscuit as the side. The sandwich was AMAZING and the biscuit was huge and delish!! We would def be back and would hope they figure out the window seating. They told us a party reserved the window seats but no one ever came to sit there for telhe duration of our time at the bar and it was just 2 of us. But the pigs in a blanket sandwich was the absolute BEST. The service was okay. We had to flag them over a few times but nothing major. Def a spot to check out.

Yelp
This bar is located right next to PB and has a great view of the ocean no matter where you seat. It has plenty of space to accommodate any group of people and the staff are nice and attentive. They have good selection of cocktails and beers and their appetizers are good with drinks. It is a good place to have some drink with friends while enjoying the view and the chill vibe.
google avatar

Brittany L.

Yelp
Went here with my family and we all loved the scenery from the bar and they had good service
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
A friend and I wanted to catch the sunset in PB and ended up in Waterbar. It was quiet since it was a rainy Tuesday, which was perfect. The server was quick to help us with our dry January drinks of choice (mocktail and hot tea). We didn't grab any food this time around, but overall was a great place to grab a drink and watch the sunset.
google avatar

Yelp
Very nice location! Right in front of the beach! We had 6 pc oysters yum! Fish n chips it's alright, ceviche shrimp and fish sooo good! Calamari was good I like it when they serve with tentacles! It's a nice place to drink!

Yelp
We had our company holiday party on December 9th and about 40% of us got food poisoning. I have to say that everything was excellent and at no time did or could have imagined getting food poisoning here, but I question their sanitation/food handling procedures. I did not look at their menu to compare with what was served, but it was buffet style and I ate everything they offered. For appetizers they served Charcuterie style board (different cheeses and meats), caprese style apps and chicken chorizo apps (these were served throughout by the servers), for dinner they offered Pear salad, Steak (cooked mid-rare), Salmon (cooked Mid-well) sauteed cauliflower, fried potatoes in a mayo sauce and some other small things like bread and sauces. This incident was reported to department of health in San Diego.

Yelp
How this place has the rating it does blows my mind. We dropped in here on a whim with a large group of 20 on a Wednesday night and were seated promptly. The atmosphere of this beach-front paradise restaurant is second to none in PB with its large open-air windows for a spectacular view of the beach/sunset and a large open dining room with a beautiful beach bar packed with Great beach themed cocktails and wines with many daily specials. The food is spectacular. Not a single complaint from our large group of 20 is proof of that as we all really enjoyed our meals. I tried a bite of my buddy's clam chowder, which was terrific and better than any I've had in San Francisco. Also tried my brother's cioppino which was packed with flavor. I had the classic smash burger and fries, which was a fresh made patty smashed with cheese, topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, and special sauce all on a perfect brioche bun. Really really good! The only negative comment is that they wouldn't let us split checks between groups, which caused us a headache at the end but i looked past this because the overall experience was great. Would definitely hit this place next time we're in PB!

Julie P.

Yelp
We went to Waterbar at a recommendation. We had just an ok experience. We did get $2 off the wine because it was Wednesdays. We ordered the fish tacos and a side of the Mac and cheese. The server messed up and accidentally put in the wrong order. They brought out our order eventually. I think the server had too many tables or something he seemed distracted and didn't come check in on us very often. Once we got the food the Mac and cheese was fabulous. The fish tacos were ok, a little bland for my liking. Lastly the wine was good. We were there in the evening so we couldn't see much outside but it is right on the water. I am sure the view is awesome during the day.

Yelp
It was my first visit last night, I liked the feel of the restaurant it being across the beach but still a classy feel. The drinks were tasty, food was delicious, the server was busier at first but as she got more time was able to be more attentive. The sushi must be delicious, because we wanted to order more but they were backed up! What we got was delicious though. Lobster spinach dip, hamachi, sticky ribs. All tasty and good quality. The only thing was I ordered another side of bread for the spinach dip and was charge two dollars for a single sliced bread. That's not a side that is one slice.

Linda W.

Yelp
Mussels at Happy Hour for $12 seem to be quite smaller than servings in my recent past visits. Still quite delicious. Just not quite enough. Chicken add on to salad appears to be largely thigh not breast meat. Service stellar. Views likewise

Yelp
This place was delicious! The service was great and it was very nice to look out at the water. The vibe is great with an under the sea theme with octopus and mermaids. Great cocktails and food

Yelp
Service was great, the fired calamari was fantastic. The first drink I ordered was the house margarita i do not recommend it, it was not great however the beers were great.

Yelp
Really fabulous place! We had a party of 9 and everything was great. The appetizers and the entrees were great ! The windows by our seats opened to the beach which was so nice.

Yelp
Great bar in PB. Lots of food and cocktail options. I tried the fries and they were delicious steak style fries. I had the merlion drink and it wasn't too sweat or too strong. Our server Jenea was so nice and sweet! One of the best parts is the amazing ocean view and fresh air!
