Watergate Bay Hotel | Best places to stay in Cornwall

"From the moment you step foot into the welcoming interiors of this iconic beachfront hotel, you know you are in for a treat. The decor is elegant yet cosy, staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, and there’s attention to detail at every turn. Rooms are tasteful, high-spec and present in a range of configurations – including family suites, beach lofts and apartments, some with self-catering. Ideal for groups and families. Amenities include an on-site cardio room and an indoor ocean-view pool. Children are made extra welcome, and there’s a relaxed, family-friendly vibe throughout. The hotel offers a variety of activities for them, including a kids’ club and a ‘Kids Zone’ play area, and there are three family-friendly restaurants. The Extreme Academy on the iconic Watergate Bay beach and is on your doorstep, offering surfing, stand-up paddlesurfing, traction kiting and more. " - Matthew Roach

Had a lovely dog friendly holiday experience at the hotel. We stayed for 3 nights in a room at the main hotel. The room was comfy and clean. Dog beds were provided. ||The hotel is next to a lovely beach that is dog friendly all year round. ||We ate one night at "Zacys" which was a fantastic restaurant.||The gym, pool and spa are also well equiped.||Breakfast is buffet style but of excellent quality. Special shout out must go to the member of staff called Andrew who worked the breakfast shift who always made a big fuss of our dogs and made them welcome.

A hotel with a lot of potential but very badly managed and poorly maintained. Also would not recommend going here as a couple as it feels like a Disney resort with children running around and screaming all day. Pool and sauna area dirty and in need of a deep clean. Also needs cleaning throughout the day if you’re gonna have kids coming straight from the beach all day. We stayed a week but only went to the pool once because it was just gross . The gym is tiny and has poor quality equipment. In our week stay, our room was only cleaned once to a high standard. The rest of the days was quite poor and on one day they left a dirty cloth. Service in the living space was really slow and just not acceptable for the price you pay- though food was good. Rarely able to call down to reception from the room as they wouldn’t answer. I emailed the hotel to tell them this and didn’t get an answer. Informed the hotel in advance that we were allergic to feathers and could not have cow milk yet our bedding had feathers and cow milk was put in the room each day despite repeatedly informing them of allergies and even leaving a note! Check in was appalling- rushed and very little information provided. No privacy in room 72 due to location- so had to close curtains most of the time- why not put in blinds so at least some natural light can come in whilst maintaining privacy? The location is great but for the price you pay for pretty standard rooms, you’re better off renting an apartment next to the hotel. I did give my feedback directly to the hotel and I did not get a response, hence this review ( so please don’t reply to say please get in contact- I did contact you via email and made my concerns known in person whilst staying). None of the issues I have raised are new - especially regarding the living space service , yet you clearly don’t do anything about it.

My Partial Sea View room was beyond all expectations as it was "huge" and I had almost a complete view of the sea. The quality of everything in the room was outstanding. My cousins had the Sea View Suite and we felt that the bath was unnecessary but that apart from that the room was excellent. We ate in The Living Space and apart from the need for a few more "quiet areas" for oldies away from the noise of children the area was excellent. Breakfast was superb. Dinner Menu - overall very good - perhaps a few more fish dishes.

We had a truly fantastic experience with the Kids’ Zone at Watergate Bay Hotel in Cornwall, where our 6-month-old daughter Marnie was looked after on several occasions during our stay. The team – Victoria, Abbie, Nicki, and Jack – were simply brilliant: calm, patient, and full of warmth. From the very first drop-off, we felt totally at ease. The space is beautifully set up and clearly run by people who know exactly how to create a nurturing, safe, and stimulating environment for little ones. Marnie was always happy and settled when we picked her up – a clear sign she was in excellent hands. Victoria, Abbie, Nicki, and Jack all brought something special to the experience. Their gentle, professional manner and clear love for what they do made a real impression. They were attentive, caring, and completely tuned in to Marnie’s needs and personality, giving us total peace of mind each time we left her in their care. We can’t thank the Kids’ Zone team enough for the confidence they gave us, and for how wonderfully they cared for Marnie. They are a true asset to Watergate Bay Hotel, and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to any family traveling with young children. Thank you again, Victoria, Abbie, Nicki, and Jack – you’re all stars!

Beautiful facility in a breathtaking location. Our room was very comfortable, well-appointed and had a great view of the ocean from the balcony. Staff were very friendly and capable, going above and beyond to secure a special bottle of wine from the "fancy" restaurant for a celebratory dinner. HOWEVER - we were not prepared for the extent of the "family friendliness" of this resort. We are a couple of a certain age, traveling together without children or a pet. Every meal, in every nook and cranny of this compound's restaurants, was mobbed with squealing children and often, large dogs. We had to hide to get any peace. Ambience = ZERO. The pool is lovely but only a few hours every day are set aside for "adults only" and it's too crowded then for a lap swim. Later we found out that the small bar next to the pool is "adults only" in the evenings - wish they had mentioned that when we checked in, obviously without kids in tow. I won't say it spoiled our experience, but we probably would not have stayed here if we knew it was all about children.

Honestly, this is my favourite hotel. The setting is stunning: the rooms are great and the staff; in the main; are amazing. Having stayed here three times: my ONLY gripe is the time it takes to be noticed by the staff when trying to order in the Living Space, especially when outside: this has always been the case. Scrap the table service! That aside: this place is an absolute gem, couldn’t recommend more highly.

Called by this afternoon for a scone, cream and jam. Setting is perfect. Wonderful view. But the scone was terrible. Far too big and tasted like a cross between bread and cake. Maybe the chef could go to a National Trust property to taste their scones. They are perfect for half the price.

We have just left after an awful 3 night stay. I’m not sure either of us have ever been so underwhelmed and disappointed with a stay. It also echoes other reviews who say they take your money and then don’t care! ||My husband booked a beach lofts which looks incredible online. However what we got was the Temu version. ||On arrival our hearts sank at the room. The panoramic views were a narrow patio and the window bath wasn’t there. We called reception to say we were disappointed and she said she’d look to see if they had anything else. She never called back! I chased and she told me that all rooms vary and we shouldn’t have booked online we should have called. She said there was a room but only for 1 night and she wouldn’t let us take it. I said we were looking for other hotels so would likely leave. She said that we wouldn’t get any money back as it was outside of their “30 day cancellation policy” - well we weren’t cancelling we were mislead. ||We couldn’t find a hotel so decided to sleep on it. We were told a Manager would contact us the next morning. We ordered room service which was freezing cold and inedible. It just kept getting worse. ||The next day no one contacted us. We sent an email. This was then replied to on Sunday at Midday where she said we could leave and if they resold our room we’d get a refund. She don’t offer to refund our meal. ||In the end at 3pm on Sunday a Manager came to speak to us. She was nice enough but obviously defensive of the hotel. She offered us a dinner in the awful restaurant but we declined. She then gave us pointers on using their website, not knowing my husband has been a computer programmer for 40 years so kind of knows what he’s doing. She also stated that we should have called as the rooms vary (not stated on website!) she said she would refund our bad meal and also look at a rate refund and let us know before we checked out. This wasn’t why we complained but at this point it was all that was available. ||That “refund” on a £3k, 3 night stay ended up being a half bottle of wine and some chocolate buttons from the honesty bar. We just looked at each other and laughed. ||When we tried to order breakfast we were told that they had stopped service as it was too busy. This was at 9am. ||At this point we were just delighted to leave. The whole weekend had been a huge let down. ||There needs to be some serious updates to the website. Clearer messaging and the staff need to be trained in actually caring about their guests. I travel a lot and it’s honestly the worst customer service I’ve received. It’s lackadaisical at best. ||We stopped at Louma on our way home and oh my was it was just what we needed. The service was next level exceptional. We decided to add an extra night so we could end our trip on a high!
