Let me start by saying I appreciate that this vegan diner exists. I wish there were more places in Seattle that offered an exclusively vegan or even vegetarian menu. That being said, I think those who will love Wayward most are those who miss the meat. Practically every dish is a take on a meaty classic like chicken & waffles or bbq drumsticks or country fried steak. If you're in the mood for an actual vegetable, well, there are scant few options here.
Until recently, I'd last been in a handful of years ago and remember being unimpressed by the bland breakfast (which, if I recall, involved biscuits and gravy). Finding ourselves here once again for a friend's birthday brunch, I was looking forward to giving them another try. This time around I opted for a lunch option with their Albuquerque Crunch Wrap (crunchy tostada, popcorn chiggen, chipotle ranch, lettuce, black beans, cheeze sauce in a flour tortilla) with fries. The fries were really good. The wrap was fine. Portions are substantial and I took half of my wrap home with me. Service was sort of weird. Our server was really nice when he came to take our order but then never came back to check on us after we got our food, nor did anyone offer refills on waters or coffees. Oh, and if you're sitting at the table by the stairs, beware of water coming over the edge from the busing station up above. Also super weird that none of the three workers who became aware of the small waterfall cascading onto me ever apologized for the mishap or brought me extra napkins for my wet head.
Bottom line, if you love heavy comfort foods and crave veganized meat-centric dishes, then Wayward is your spot. If you're looking for something that doesn't include a fake meat, you're best off looking elsewhere.
