"The 50-year-old lunch counter, Westside Coffee Shop has shuttered; it fed the neighborhood dishes like pernil, rice and black beans, or plantains and a salad. Grub Street reported it’s reopening in Ozone Park next year." - Melissa McCart

"Westside Coffee Shop is Tribeca’s best kept secret. The all-red diner on a quiet stretch of Church Street serves up some of the neighborhood’s best food, at a fraction of the price of the tweezery tasting menus and fancy steakhouses the area is known for. We like the pernil, with big slabs of dark, shiny skin, and their yellow rice and beans is comfortingly simple. Grab a chrome stool at the counter next to someone who’s deeply focused on their steamy bowl of carne de res guisado, or a table next to a group of friends who are 11 Coronas deep at 5pm on a Monday. Or, get a heavy bag of takeout, and lug it home as quickly as possible. Once you know about it, you’ll be back again and again. The pork is tender, the skin is thick and fatty and chocolate brown. Whenever it gets too rich, have a bite of rice and beans as a palate cleanser. Rice and Beans The beans are soft and saucy, the yellow rice golden and deceptively savory. A spoonful of this and you might consider taking the next spoonful outside, and feeding it to some stranger on the street. photo credit: Alex Staniloff Chicken Mofongo Soft chunks of plantain interlaced with shreds of chicken. A truly beautiful friendship. Always order the mofongo. It’s dense and deeply flavorful." - Willa Moore

"Westside Coffee Shop is a throwback to the days when Tribeca was part of the “West Side” as in “West Side Story,” and its lunch-counter layout reveals its age. It has accumulated cuisines for 60 years and more, and advertises Spanish, American, and Mexican chow on its awning — and does all of them well. Try the Cuban sandwich or the salad-topped chicken enchiladas, which are served with a separate bowl of chile guajillo." - Robert Sietsema

My favorite Dominican food in the city…order the pernil or baked chicken (better yet go with a friend and split them both). Each will come with an extremely healthy side of black or pinto beans and yellow rice. House made hot sauce will knock you over but is delicious. Get a side of fried onions as well. The place feels like it hasn’t changed interiors for 30+ years…a no frills diner type atmosphere with friendliest auntie vibes from the ladies behind the counter. An unexpected find in Tribeca!

This place rocks! First time here and had baked chicken with rice and beans. Was absolutely delicious. The chicken was tender and incredible tasty - spiced to perfection. Their hot sauce is hot but also has a peppery taste that kicks everything up a notch. Most hot sauces are hot and may have a tomato base with not much flavor. This hot sauce was pure tasty, spicy pepper- mmmmmm! The staff is kind, friendly and helpful. My meal was filling, delicious, nutritious and only $14. For this area and while we are in an inflationary period is fantastic. Can’t wait to go back and try other dishes. As a fan of Dominican food this has to be among the best I’ve had. Go eat here and ask for the hot sauce and use with caution!

This review is 24 years overdue. Because that's how long I have been going to westside. That's when I started my job and they were there before that. Cozy atmosphere good food good vibes, good people but most important good food. They are my lifesaver after work with their mondongo Monday and Thursday every time I don't cook.

Been coming here on and off for 20 years, since I was a little kid. I live abroad now but went back on a trip to NY this week and the food is good as ever. Beef Burrito combo is delicious and massive and comes at a reasonable price. Love this place!

On our final day in New York, my wife and I stumbled upon a remarkable restaurant that served the most memorable meal of our entire trip. Unlike most establishments in the area, the prices were surprisingly reasonable. The chicken soup and grilled beef with fried plantains were exceptional, making my mouth water just thinking about them. The warm and welcoming woman who worked there was incredibly helpful in recommending dishes. I only wish it wasn't so far from home so we could return more often.

Usually order at least twice a month from here but this time it was a no for me. I love their food but yesterday the beans were for sure old. Had a weird smell according to my partner but I just thought they smelled like tomato paste, didn’t think anything of it. My partner was smart enough to not use them but I did and now I’ve been using the bathroom since 3a non stop. I’m pretty sure I now have food poisoning. Everything else was great as always but them beans were deadly.

Ran in to escape the rain! Great food and hospitality. A hidden gem for sure. The coffee was great with cream and sugar! Recommend the bacon breakfast sandwich and 2 egg breakfast plate! Huge portions

My wife and I stopped in here on our last day in New York. It was honestly the best meal we had all trip. Pricing wasn’t extortionate like the majority of other places in the area. The chicken soup and grilled beef with fried plantain were incredible. I’m actually salivating right now thinking about it. The lady working here was lovely also and helped us with our choices. Would love to return if it wasn’t on the complete opposite side of the world to us.

I came in late after the breakfast rush so I did not wait at all. Great coffee, fast service, amazing breakfast I got the Mangu con queso huevos y salami. It was amazing. The staff speaks spanish to each other so if that bothers you this may not be your place. I do not care what they are saying as long as the food comes out fast and it is delicous and it was. Portions are huge prices are very cheap. They accept credit and debit cards.
