The Best Things the Eater Boston Team Ate This Week, Spring 2021 - Eater Boston

"The other business I want to highlight today is Fishy Fish Market; it’s a delivery service from Tim Maslow (Strip-T’s, Ribelle, Whaling in Oklahoma) and friends that includes tons of fresh seafood options, as well as an ever-changing array of prepared foods, with a focus on local ingredients." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

We came here by accident but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise and now I wish I lived in Tulsa! I would seriously make this a weekly event. Not knowing what to expect we walked in and I noticed you had to order at the counter. No worries because we came after the lunch rush. The menu board was up on the wall and was easy to read. Plenty of options to choose from but I quickly made my selection. I chose the Fried Perch with Cole Slaw & Fries. The service was very good and our meals were brought to our table fairly quickly. Overall it was a good selection, the perch was tasty and although I would get again there are several other options I would take before I take the perch again. The items I didn't particularly care for, the hush puppies! They were good just not hot enough. It seems as if they just sat under a heat lamp. I also chose the Cole Slaw which was fair, it just didn't have enough flavor for me. The fries I ordered crispy and they were perfect. My take, if you are a seafood person then this is a must try!

Large servings of good tasting country style sides, accompanied disappointing fried fish, served at a price that really makes you disappointed that you ate there. Fried or broiled, nothing exciting. If you are a big eater, you will get full. If you are looking for good really good fish you will upset that you paid over $45 + tip, for two meals. This is our second and last try of the Broken Arrow White River Fish market. I have always been a fan of the Tulsa icon located on N. Sheridan. We had dined at the Broken Arrow restaurant shortly after they opened, about five years ago. The experience was average. Not worth the time to write a review. We had not returned until today. Today’s disappointment was in their signature menu item, the fish. My wife’s catfish was fair, three over cooked, filets with a thin cornmeal coating. My fried Orange Roughy was sad. No breading on the fish. Just deep fried, over cooked, which formed a leathery outer layer and allowed the fish to be dry inside. I had difficulty cutting it with a fork. I tore it apart with my hands and ate it that way. I’m done….

UPDATE: 05-07-2024, 5:30 PM, my wife and I went to White River Fish Market & Restaurant - Broken Arrow. We started with a 1/4 pound of fried clams; came with cocktail sauce and lemon. The clams tasted like clams; not fried breading. I ordered their smoked salmon [for the first time], with green beans and onion rings. It was perfectly smoked, with subtle smoky tasting moist flaky meat. Onion rings are always good and green beans are cooked with onions. My wife had her favorite, grilled shrimp and scallops, with rice and salad. We both had iced tea that was refilled often. Service is always great and staff is friendly. ************************* 2022 Always liked White River’s variety of seafood, friendly service and reasonable prices. I really do miss the fried clams though!

Google
My Boss took me for lunch here, after we found out they had a "Whole Catfish" option on the menu. I myself am not a fan of Seafood, but when the boss says go, we go lol. He got his catfish and was quite pleased. Me being a non-fan of the fish, tried the Alaskan cod. I was hoping it would be like a standard fish and chips, it wasn't. It was a little too fishy, almost as if the flavor of other products was affecting the cod. Overall, Solid 4! If you enjoy fish....

Google
I've been going to White River for years, and it still holds my number one spot for seafood in the Tulsa market. While you can't go wrong with either location, this review is specifically covering the Broken Arrow location. The food is excellent with a wide variety of both fried and broiled options. I love the fact that I have a place where I can get things like sea bass, alligator, and more that you don't normally see on most menus. They also have a market so you can buy fresh seafood directly from them in case you want to do your own cooking at home. I would highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys great seafood!

Google
Awesome casual, consistent, flown-in fresh seafood. Everything is great! Well-known by locals and visitors alike who have an 'in' about where to go. This second, suburban location hasn't been around as long as the original, but that just means its Broken Arrow and South Tulsa and area patrons don't have to drive as far! It's very well-supported by the community.

Google
The best thing was freshness. Quality service. Our server/waiter was exceptionally good. We ordered an assortment of fish and it was super enjoyable. Our server was Janely. Very responsive and took care of our family/group extremely well. Will be back.

Google
Always great fresh food here! I always want to try something else, but the smoked trout is too good!! Sides are all excellent and pie for dessert. Fried green tomatoes are excellent, too.

Yelp
I have eaten several times at the north store and always liked it. This place seems nicer and more roomy. It is spotlessly clean and bright. The fish market makes it smell fishy, but that's ok with me. I ordered the combo meal and it was very good. The scallops were the best part of the meal. The meal only includes one piece of catfish and I would have liked more fish, but now I know. The shrimp were huge and nicely cooked. The stuffed crab was good as well. A highlight were the the onion rings I ordered as a side. They were excellent! Even though this is an order at the counter place, their table server was efficient and friendly. It was a good meal and experience.

Yelp
Used to love White River back in the day. Gave the Broken Arrow location a shot two separate times recently and walked right out after entering. Both times the stench of room temp fish mixed with sewage overwhelms you upon entering. Gross at best, dangerous at worst. Hope they clean up and figure it out!

Debi D.

Yelp
I love their crab legs! Corn on cob and the okra is amazing! Staff is friendly and serves is great! Even the diet DP tastes so good!

Yelp
I only come here for the seafood market, not the restaurant side. This is the only place I can find good quality salmon! I came in on 2/3/2024 around 11:50am to get a salmon fillet. The gentleman that helped me was very professional and quick. I asked him if he would cut the fillet up for me (dull knives at home) and he said sure no problem! He was very quick and efficient, made sure each portion was sized identically. I mean he really did a great job! I will continue to come here for the salmon and service. I'm sure the rest of the seafood is good too, but I've only had the salmon.

Yelp
I live in Oklahoma City, but when I'm in Tulsa I like to go to Whie River Fish Market (WRFM) for lunch or dinner. I have never been disappointed in any meal that I have had there. On July 26th, I ate at the Broken Arrow loction for the first time. There was no difference in their quality or service compared to their north Tulsa location that has been there for eons. J ordered a cup of gumbo and fried shrimp. I enjoyed both. The gumbo was tasty, and the blend and consistency were good - not too much rice, right amount of rue. May have been a bit short on other ingredients. I give it a four out of five rating. The fried shrinp was excellent, prefectely breaded and cooked. The size of the shrimp was large, and the quanity more than enough. I rate it a 5/5. The fries were good - 4/4. The hush puppies were also good -4/5. If you're hungry for sea food in a casual atmosphere with moderate prices, you can't go wrong by selecting WRFM.

Yelp
Just Say No! I was so excited to try this place out, I was extremely disappointed with all the food, the flounder was flavorless and inedible as it was fried so hard. My dining companion was equally unimpressed with the fried catfish and rock hard hush puppies. The service was below average, the standout here was the marketside and unique decor. Final Thoughts: Recommend purchasing fresh fish and cooking it yourself. Choose Wisely Fellow Foodies! #LiveEatBeHappy

Yelp
This location is just as good & every bit as busy as the original location. We came on a Friday for dinner. They were slammed but our food came out quickly and hot off the grill. The smoked rainbow trout had great flavor and the broiled flounder was massive and cooked to perfection. Fried okra was a hit and the coleslaw is the perfect side to lighten up a rich meal. The only thing I wasn't impressed with (again) were the onion rings. They look so impressive you have to get them but they're crunchy not crispy. Everything else is just deeelish!
google avatar

Jim V.

Yelp
The grilled flounder is the bomb with onion rings and a baked potato. Servers good at helping you get an open table

Yelp
A Tulsa classic with amazing seafood. It's one of the oldest restaurants in town for a good reason.

Deborah H.

Yelp
I'm not a fish lover but this restaurant has amazing seafood. I would highly recommend this restaurant. The fish is fresh and doesn't taste fishy!

Steve C.

Yelp
Cod was tough, onion rings were so overcooked they were inedible. Hush puppies were hard and bland. Poor meal for almost $50.

Pam R.

Yelp
Service was really quick. We had fried combo platter, fries and coleslaw and catfish nuggets, onion rings and coleslaw. Everything was great. We took home enough to have another meal.

Yelp
Pros: Cheap seafood. I always get the oysters on a half shell. Hubby has tried it all (grilled and fried). Cons: shrimp cocktail not good. Tiny shrimps that didn't feel fresh. Did the cocktail sauce come out of a bottle?
google avatar

Don P.

Yelp
No matter how hard I try to like White River the poor quality of fish preparation always disappoints. The fried Alaskan Cod Fish was tough and overcooked. The Hushpuppies were overcooked also. The fries and coleslaw were good.

Guy B.

Yelp
My last visit to the BA White River was my last. On this visit I once again tried the fried grouper. Just like last time...tasted like previously frozen fish that was overcooked. (Flounder is always the same, also). My wife had catfish nuggets....dry and overcooked. The wait staff will keep your drinks filled but that's about it. I had to retrieve a box for my wife's leftovers which became too dry and tough to eat the next day. The friendly manager DID give me money back!! Overcooking overpriced fish has become a problem at this restaurant along with the misconception that the fish is 'fresh'. I have had great luck buying from their fish market, though. So, in the future, I will purchase fish to cook at home and leave the restaurant to others.

Yelp
Too expensive! I wanted to try a fried fish plate but $20?!? I got a bowl of gumbo that was good but I feel ripped off at $12
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing Fresh Food at a Great Price. The entire restaurant team & manager were super polite and helpful. The food was great, we had a little bit of everything; red beans & rice, shrimp cocktail, sea bass, scallops, roughy and shrimp, everything was great. Highly recommend!

Yelp
My wife and I stopped at the White River Fish Market in Broken Arrow. We dined here once before several months ago and enjoyed the visit. I wish I could say the same about this visit but can't. We ordered onion rings and fried oysters for an appetizer. My wife ordered the shrimp dinner with fries and slaw. I ordered ocean perch with fries and slaw. Both dinners came with hush puppies. I really don't like to give bad reviews, but sometimes I feel the need. This is one of those where we've had previous good experience. And this time not so good. The slaw, fries and onion rings were the best part of our meals. First thing to arrive at our table was the fried oysters that was so burned they were crunchy when you tried to eat them. Next came the Onion rings that were good. Next came our meals and the shrimp, fish and hush puppies were all very overcooked. The portions were large and the service met our expectations. We will give White River with the two out of three chance in the future.

Yelp
I'm usually one to only leave positive reviews, especially for locally owned businesses. This is an exception with the hopes that the management of this restaurant take necessary steps to improve. On Friday night I stopped in for what I thought would be a quick and simple meal. I ordered a shrimp poor boy and a side of their red beans and rice. This order was placed to go. When I got home with what I thought would be a pretty good meal, to say I was disappointed would be a bit understated. What I found was a baguette (their version of one) with a sprinkling of popcorn shrimp. As for the rest of the poor boy I found what appeared to be a garden salad. That's it. No tarter sauce or any dressing of any kind. First, popcorn shrimp are fine in their own right, however, they should not ever be passed on as an ingredient for a poor boy. Secondly a garden salad is not to be confused with topping for such a meal. Lastly, to leave the dressing from the sandwich is nothing short of insulting. This is not my first disappointment with this place but it is my opinion that far too many people have allowed them to be mediocre that it has become their norm. I will stick to buying from the market and preparing my seafood at home the way it should be. For those who see food and service other than I do at this establishment, I say that is great for you. I only speak for my disappointing experience.

Xavier A.

Yelp
First the Complaint, then the Accolades. Overpriced and small portions for the price. Portions have consistently gotten smaller while prices have skyrocketed well above inflation. Now the Positives. Fish is always fresh and tasty. Side items the same. Cooked to order so everything is hot and fresh. Service is very good and wait staff personable and attentive whenever you need them. Lots of varied seafood selections, including exotic offerings like frog legs (tastes like chicken). Even have fried green tomatoes now. Almost always busy but food is cooked and served promptly, so no long wait times. Cafeteria style dining in a large open space. They have a fish market East of the DIning section whcih has great offerings and even their special seafood seasoning for sale. If you get a fish craving, White River is the best in Broken Arrow to satisfy it.
google avatar

Jack C.

Yelp
Once again never fails best seafood in town and always great service. This isn't your fancy sit down restaurant, this is a family style split a table if you need to and enjoy talking while eating the best seafood hands down... I highly suggest the salmon, fried jumbo shrimp, onion rings, coleslaw and on special nights lobster! Their hush puppies are heavenly and they have desert but I promise you won't have space left over to eat it... maybe take it to go for tomorrow night! Stop reading start eating!
google avatar

Chloe L.

Yelp
incredible, amazing, spectacular, etc. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but wow the food here is great. I think this might be some of the freshest seafood in Oklahoma. Go on Tuesday to get the lobster special pictured below! Also, the staff was so kind and genuinely cares about your dining experience.
google avatar

Valentina L.

Yelp
Definitely will not be going back. Atmosphere is much like a cafeteria and not very clean. fish was dry and over cooked. I asked if it was wild caught; was told yes. (definitely not wild!) Prices were reasonable considering the quality. Later that evening I did not feel well at all!
google avatar

Tommaso C.

Yelp
Great food and selection. Staff was so nice and accommodating. My tuna was cooked perfectly and so was my friend's salmon. You definitely will not leave hungry or disappointed. Would have been five stars if it was in a real restaurant setting, but the price tags were too high for a pay at the counter strip mall setting. But if you don't care about the looks of the place, you will love the food

Brian K.

Yelp
Consistent delicious food. Always friendly and fast. Clean dining room. Briled or fried platter is my go to, plenty of food to fill you up and have leftovers.
google avatar

Yelp
i went in looking for some crawfish, the lady was super nice and helpful. customer service was great. the restaurant part itself was kept clean and presentable, needless to say i will definitely be going back!
google avatar

Alex G.

Yelp
The only thing we can miss about coming to eat at this place is the sea in the background and the sand between our feets. Fast, simple, good product and traditional preparation. You will not see stars, but you will never regret it, they are consistent.
google avatar

Yelp
Setup of the restaurant itself is cafeteria style. Kinda stressful trying to decided what you want if you have never visited before. Food itself is very yummy. I would suggest combo style meals (shrimp & alligator in the pictures were a combo). Gives you more options to try new things! Definitely seemed like it was fresh seafood!

Kayte M.

Yelp
Really enjoyed our visit to this establishment. You order at the counter, choose your seat and they bring your food to you. The raw oysters were very fresh and delicious! I had the grilled shrimp and scallop kabob with fried okra and coleslaw as my sides. My husband had the fried catfish poboy with the spiced rice and ear of corn as his sides. We were both very pleased with our food. We shared our sides as there is plenty enough to split and that way you get to try more variety of what they offer! To top it off, we shared a slice of buttermilk pie (yummy!) but must admit they had several good looking desserts! The staff at this location were top-notch. They were happy, kind, the kitchen staff were singing! You could tell they enjoy what they do This is also a market so you can get your preferences and take them home to cook yourself!

Chloe B.

Yelp
My husband and I went to dinner here. We both got shrimp and loved it. It was busy and I was a little confused on how we get our drinks, but a waiter ended up coming to our table. It does smell like fish throughout the whole restaurant, but you are at a fish market, so you can't complain.

Linda P.

Yelp
Great food for a fair price and good choice of menu items. Highly recommend for families.
google avatar

Jill G.

Yelp
First time to try this broken arrow location and I'm just not a fan. I know it's a fish place but it smelled really fishy in the dining room. Some of the rest to my party also commented about the smell. There is plenty of seating like enough for a huge convention so you don't need to worry about that. You order at the counter and then sit down. Most meals run around $15, portions are huge but pretty much everything is fried. I opted for the broiled tilapia which is enough to feed two people, a side of onion rings and a salad to try to cut down on the grease. Still way too heavy of grease and I did not enjoy the flavor. Not a fan.

Gene G.

Yelp
This place has the freshest seafood, the largest portions and the best prices of any seafood place I know in the area. Usually I get the grilled Chilean Sea Bass or the broiled scallops. But today, all I wanted was some chilled cocktail shrimp and a bowl of gumbo. It really hit the spot for a tasty, light lunch. You walk in the front door, get in line, and you can view their amazing selections through the glass case at the counter. You pay, get your receipt, take a seat and somehow they miraculously find you to bring your order even when they are packed. Sure, it lacks the ambiance (and the pricing) of other seafood locations, but they have a down-home Louisiana flair to this place in BA as well as at their original location near admiral and pine in north Tulsa. Red beans and rice, gumbo, fresh oysters in season, and some good desserts. The Onion rings are a personal favorite. Food is great and the service was highly efficient. Enjoy!
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
When I was younger I used to go to the original location and it was fantastic. Fast forward many years and to the BA location. My husband and I walked in excited to try it and immediately we both smelled the most horrible rotten fishy smell. We were gagging as we fled the place and never went back. I just can't make myself walk in the door again after that horrible, putrid smell last time. I've had many people advise me to give them a second chance but we drive up and turn away every time.

Paul K.

Yelp
Had the Lobster dinner tonight at the broken Arrow location at $39.95 each! It was awful , tough, with like grizzle on the bottom and could hardly cut threw it with their sharp knife. We were so disappointed. Will never do it there again!

Adalean B.

Yelp
This is a good place for seafood. It is a bit pricey but most menu items are fresh and tasty. The only disappointment I found was the swordfish. It was not warm when served and was not fresh. The service is sort of cafeteria style. Servers are always pleasant.
google avatar

Brett V.

Yelp
Simply excellent food every single time. This is the best seafood you can get without being on the coast.
google avatar

Eileen S.

Yelp
It was my first time at this outlet. Ordered the broiled flounder which I felt tasted quite blend. Didn't really like the skin. I think when it comes to whole fish, I prefer them fried although it also depends on the quality and quantity of the breading. The sides were great. They gave lots of onion rings and the coleslaw was good. I also like to buy fresh seafood from their market area.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
I have been here several times and love it every time I go! Their Cod is delicious! I highly recommend it! Every time I go I get great service, friendly staff and the food comes out hot and fresh.
google avatar

Kirk M.

Yelp
First time to dine here. Stopped in for lunch and ordered Gumbo and Onion Rings with a glass of tea. Gumbo was flavorless and had almost no seafood in it. Shrimp were the size of a thumbnail and had approximately 3 in a bowl. Price for lunch was $15.58. Rings were a solid B+. A place that advertizes itself as a fresh fish market should be able to do much better. Hire a Cajun from SOUTH LOUISSIANA to produce respectable seafood. I will stick with Fish Daddy''s in the future.
google avatar

Ray N.

Yelp
Why did I wait so long to try a White River Fish Market! I've literally missed out for years. I know there is another spot in north Tulsa but tried this location for dinner last Friday night. I was surprised at how the large the seating area as and also that the Euro style of seating was at a down home place like this! How fun is it to get to share a table with strangers and enjoy a meal and have a great conversation! I'm a bit of an extrovert so it's good more for, but for those who tend to be more shy they do have booths available, but they are limited! The fish selection here was phenomenal and all the products looked as fresh as could be considering it has to be shipped in. Hard to find 'fresh' seafood in Oklahoma. I'm a huge fan of catfish and really wanted that for dinner on my visit but will be excited to try some mahi mahi or swordfish my next time in. My wife had a huge order of shrimp which were fantastic! Each meal here comes with two sides. They are well portioned and easily sharable. Something to consider when ordering! Overall I had a fantastic experience and will be glad to make return trips. I also enjoyed seeing the fresh fish when I ordered and also checked out the side section which features a fresh market of seafood to buy and take home. Tulsa and BA are certainly better for having White River open and operational!
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
Amazing and fresh seafood. Whenever I'm in Tulsa this place is a must. They literally give you so much food you could share the meal. I ordered the fried combo platter which came with shrimp, catfish, a crab, and two hush puppies plus a side of tomatoes and a mound of onion rings. No chance I could finish it all. Mike the manager was great and stopped by to see if I was satisfied with my choice of food. Great food and great service!

Kirby C.

Yelp
Large selection of great seafoods and sides. Lots of Family style seating, attentive friendly staff. Also has a seafood market, so you can purchase different items and fix at home.
google avatar

Matthew R.

Yelp
My wife and I used to go to the old location in North Tulsa, but come here now as the location is better for us. The food and service are just as exceptional here as it is at the other location. Today, I ordered the Broiled Sea Scallop dinner with coleslaw and french fries. My wife got the Grilled Salmon Filet with tomatoe wedges and a green salad. My wife's Salmon was "absolutely yummy", as were my scallops. We have yet to be disappointed with this restaurant, and suggest if you like fish, and are in the area, check them out!

Sharon W.

Yelp
So disappointed, it used to be so good, too bad! Oysters were not shucked properly, lots of shell. The shrimp were way over cooked, very rubbery. Two dishes you would think a "fish market" would have down.
google avatar

Jenn D.

Yelp
My husband & I shared the fried sampler for lunch. Which is 2 fried shrimp, a fillet of fried catfish, 2 fried scallops, a stuffed crab, 2 hush puppies, and choice of 2 sides (we got coleslaw and onion rings). Pros: quick & friendly service, delicious stuffed crab, succulent scallops, pretty tasty catfish, good (but not amazing) onion rings, casual dining Cons: disappointingly over cooked shrimp, just ok coleslaw, and no malt vinegar I think they have too large of a menu and some details are overlooked because of that. We will probably try it again, but will be picker in our order choice.
