The Best Restaurants and Bars in the Columbia River Gorge | Eater Portland

"This bakery, perched in the hillside town of White Salmon, is the place locals go for fresh pastries, as well as breakfast dishes like avocado toast on thick slabs of rustic white bread, topped with ricotta, micro greens, and a soft cooked egg or a sesame bagel with scallion dill cream cheese and smoked salmon. Lunches include several sandwiches built on the bakery’s bread — think Reuben paninis or baguettes loaded with Italian cured meats — as well as daily soups made with locally sourced produce." - Molly Allen

Hi Jack

Google
Fantastic place for fresh baked goods and breakfast / lunch items. Stopped in and got the bacon, egg and cheddar breakfast sandwich on an English muffin….EGGSELENT!!! 😂 Also got the BLT. The tomatoes were so fresh and juicy. The sandwich had a great homemade crusty bread with amazing homemade sauces. Also got the gorge berry bar. You MUST get this! So yummy. Also got a blueberry muffin…it was so fresh, big blueberries and not overly sweet…just perfectly sweet. Finally, we got the chocolate chip oat cookie. So tasty and filling! Everything is fresh and made in house. Place was clean with friendly staff. You will love it!

Google
This place was an excellent spot for breakfast. The avocado toast was absolutely delicious, and I particularly enjoyed the sweet peas inside. Pastry was delicious and fresh! The coffee wasn’t to my taste, but overall, I had a great time. The patio seating was great, offering a beautiful view of the mountains.

Stacey Andrews

Google
Gem. Excellent find and repeat visits during our stay. Nothing disappointed. The breakfast sandwich was a big hit as were all the pastries and cookies. Highly recommend even with a small wait. Line moved quickly and starts before the doors open.

Casey Harris

Google
This is our second visit to the bakery. Last trip was for lunch and the sandwiches are amazing. This trip was for breakfast. Also amazing. The cardamom buns are great and the deluxe breakfast sandwich is also great. Last rip we bought a loaf of theor rustic sourdough and it was fantastic. Great service and atmosphere.

Google
Everything we ate here was lovely and delicious. Fun to watch bread being made. If you are super hungry order 2x, portions are small. Seating can be competitive when it's busy.

Teresa Krygowska

Google
Excellent bakery in the small town. The coffee are very good, pastry and the bread are so fresh and tasty . 5 ☆ for everything.

Lily Zhou

Google
Delicious-for the both savory and sweet treats we got there but prepare to wait. Budget at least half an hour, definitely not a grab and go.

Wade Wright

Google
Line was 15 people out the door but moved really quick. Only waited about 10 minutes. When we sat down the line was closer to 30 people out the door but it moved so quickly I don't think anyone minded. If you drive up and see a lot of people waiting don't let it dissuade you. It was worth the wait. We tried about six different items and they were all really good. Loved the rhubarb options. Got enough to take away and snack throughout the day and it all kept well. Would definitely recommend getting there early. Great bakery.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Definitely worth visiting when in the area! There was a short line when we arrived but it moved quickly. Plenty of seating indoor and outdoor and lots of dogs on the patio! Ordered a cookie, cardamom bun, mushroom cheese galette, chocolate croissant, and ham and Gruyère croissant. Everything was simply divine! Small parking lot but plenty of street parking. Can't wait to try again!
google avatar

Yelp
4.5 stars (only bc something to consider, but good for them) bc we got there 5 minutes after opening and there was already a line around the front! They're known for their cardamom knots, and with good reason! But everything was so good and fresh.

Vicky C.

Yelp
This place is SOOOO good! Best avocado toast I have ever had! And the cardamom cinnamon roll is amazing! Gett there early for the best selection. There will be a line, worth it. Then we came back at lunch time for their soup with a piece of their delicious bread. My favorite was the tomato soup. It's like a pizza in a cup. Delish!
google avatar

Emma T.

Yelp
Nice bakery and breakfast spot. Had deluxe breakfast sandwich. The croissants was delicious and fresh with crispy bacon and yummy spices spill. Good latte, although they gave me hot instead of iced. No big deal still tasted great. Came twice during our stay and would go again!
google avatar

Kenny F.

Yelp
I had the mushroom scramble for breakfast. It is scrambled eggs with mushrooms over toast. It was delicious! The baked offerings looked great and they had a couple bakers shaping loaves in the dining area, which enhanced the ambiance that you are in a real bakery.

Alberto A.

Yelp
We were on a family trip to this part of Oregon, The baked good were awesome! Great place to stop and pick up lunch for a picnic later in the area.

Yelp
Popular bakery in the heart of White Salmon, OR! On this Saturday morning, there was a line of people waiting at the door just before they opened at 8:00am. It's not a big bakery but there's an outdoor patio and decent room inside. The staff was quick to get through their first rush of customers. Their baked goods taste just as incredible as they look. One of my favorites was the classic Chocolate Croissant. It was mouthwatering, fluffy and still warm from the oven! You will love this bakery, I promise!
google avatar

Matthew H.

Yelp
Like most great bakeries, timing is everything, so check to make sure they are open and you are not too late in the day, to ensure you get the best selection of excellent baked goods. Coffee is good too! I like the scones, croissants, cookies.. pretty much everything I've tried! Oh and grab a loaf of fresh bread!
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
So cute and wonderful food! Love the aesthetics and outdoor patio. What an adorable town

Yelp
SO love the White Salmon bakery! Super baked goods...like the Molasses cookie (I am a HUGE chocolate lover...so, loving this cookie was a surprise...), Ham and Gruyère Croissant (epic), berry galette (not too sweet, lovely crust), and the breakfast sandwiches?!? Love the sausage and peppers breakfast sandwich. The Ham and cheese sandwiches (lunch item)...for grab and go are epic. Now, for the bread? The Rustic White is amazing...but, so are all the others. The Niçoise salad is SUPER...just fantastic... Need I go on? Try it out! You may need to wait in line...but, it's worth it. Bring your phone and chillax...then, get your YUM on! Friendly service, too. Oh, and one more thing...our dog loves the dog biscuits (by the register)...he thinks they are barking amazing. Enjoy!

Yelp
A very popular cafe in white salmon where you can order sandwiches, breakfast/lunch food, soup, pastries, coffee/tea, fresh bread, etc. Bread and pastries are baked fresh in the store. There's a good amount of seating indoors and outdoors but the place is so popular there's almost always a line. Service took a little while for the soup and sandwiches but staff were very friendly. Will return when we're back in White Salmon.
google avatar

Jack G.

Yelp
Between their outstanding bread, the excellent value, the delicious food that they serve, and the pleasant service, this bakery is a solid five stars. There is almost always a line to get in at popular times, but it moves along. My favorite breakfast spot in the area.

Brittany N.

Yelp
Wow! The line outside the building prior to opening was indicative of how fantastic this spot is. Definitely local community hangout vibes, but do not miss if you are stopping through. The croissants rivaled some I've tasted in Europe. Our breakfast was the perfect fuel before hitting a large hike.
google avatar

Rose D.

Yelp
We were hiking in the area and while looking on Google Maps for directions to where we were going for lunch, we spotted this bakery. So glad we found them by chance! They are a small bakery, but they have enough variety of both tempting sweet & savory options, along with fresh baked breads, you'll find something you'll want to take home (or in our case, a big bakery box full of treats to take home). Their prices were very reasonable too, far Jess than what we'd pay for lesser quality & smaller portioned bakery items at New Seasons. They also serve coffee & espresso drinks, and they have inside seating if you want to enjoy a coffee and a bite to eat there. We couldn't decide what to take home, and since we live over an hour from here we bought enough treats to last us for our entire week off: -Chocolate Covered Macaroons (huge & yummy!) -Pain au Chocolate (aka chocolate croissants, so delicious) -Butterscotch Blondies (very good, but compared to all the other treats we tried these were least impressive) -Chocolate Olive Oil Cake (such a big slice the two of us shared it & it was plenty, plus we saved this one for last and had it a few days later and it was still great!)
google avatar

Allie S.

Yelp
If you are in the area, I'd definitely stop by. The line was a bit long but the ham croissant was soooooo good! So good! It was a cool vibe, a bit busy, so it was a little loud but there is also (dog friendly) outdoor seating.

Adam N.

Yelp
Had the breakfast sandwich and my wife had the avocado toast. Huge portion sizes and great croissants.
google avatar

Jenny W.

Yelp
Not sure where I went wrong because I found the food here pretty underwhelming. The slow roasted pork open face sandwich was too bready and was much more greasy / heavy than I was expecting (and I found the pork a bit dry). The squash sandwich was equally underwhelming although at least it was light - I didn't love the bread it came with (very dense and somewhat dry), and didn't realize the sandwich would be cold. All the baked goods I tried were also pretty average - coffee cake, ginger cookie, macaroon. Maybe I've been spoiled by creative and delicious pastries elsewhere, but the ones here just didn't impress me.
google avatar

Justin M.

Yelp
Simply put.... There is no better bakery. Now I have to write more to get the character count up.... But for real. Best Bakery In Washington! We go almost every weekend. Can't get enough. See you there! Or maybe not.... More for me!
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
Fantastic baked goods in a cozy and friendly spot. Loved it! A great option for breakfast.

Yelp
The cardamom buns are Heavenly! Oh, my! The laminated croissant dough is rolled and baked in a muffin tin. It's buttery and just slightly sweet, with some sugar caramelizing on the bottom. The addition of cardamom is a sophisticated add and the slight hint of this spice really adds a wow factor. It was so good that after eating it, I had to buy another to take home. Yes, that's right - had to! Seriously, it was that good. I could wax poetic about the cardamom buns all day, so let me move onto some other items In their phenomenal pastry counter. Trust me, while you may stop in for coffee or breakfast, it would take incredible will power to pass on at least one of these items. They are all next level! The ginger molasses cookies are divine! Unlike most ginger cookies that are flat, this cookie is thick and the flavors are on point. The choColgate chip hazelnut scone is so buttery with just the right amount of chocolate and hazelnuts. They are there, but don't dominate letting the scone itself shine. The chocolate croissants have the same buttery, flaky dough as the cardamom muffin and it envelopes the delicious chocolate. So good, even better if heated so the chocolate melts. The baguettes and bread are fabulous too. Crunchy in the outside and a great chew on the inside. Coffee, chai and tea to order. Plus sandwiches, both breakfast and lunch versions, served on their bread. The breakfast sandwich of egg, bacon, avocado and arugula with aioli was good, but definitely very light on the filling. Needed two eggs and a lot more bacon for $9.99 imho. I ordered my breakfast sandwich with the egg scrambled because I don't like the taste of egg whites. The sandwich arrived with a fried egg and when I mentioned it to the cashier, she argued with me and said I specifically ordered a fried egg. Hhmmm. If the sandwich comes with a fried egg, why would I request it? I made a request for scrambled since that was a customization. They did remake the sandwich but I would have preferred less attitude. Communal seating inside at large and small tables with a view of the bakers doing their magic. Plus a patio out back with heaters. Patio is fabulous in the warmer weather.

Yelp
We were on our way out of town and we're looking for a good cup of coffee and sweet treat before getting on the road! We quickly searched for the best bakery and found White Salmon. When we arrived, there was a long line out the door. We soon understood why. Service, ambiance and food were absolutely wonderful! This is a no frills place with many seating options. We cannot wait to return to try out more items!
google avatar

Isabel L.

Yelp
This place is always poppin. I've been both for breakfast and for dinner. They have great pastries, breakfast sandwiches and coffee! Monday night pizza is also spectacular -- awesome woodfired pies, and a great wine list. They don't have much seating, so try to get there early since during the winter months sitting outside is pretty cold.
google avatar

Kristy B.

Yelp
Super cute cafe with lots of seating. Delicious baked goods and yummy sandwiches for breakfast and lunch. Patio is dog friendly. The croque madame was incredible

Dani K.

Yelp
It's been a few years since we've been here, but on a trip to White Salmon we came here twice. Great sandwiches, good coffee. Delicious treats. Worth a detour if you're on the south side of the Gorge.

Amy C.

Yelp
I called in ahead of time and ordered an Italian sandwich. Upon pick up I learned they forgot about me. Still charged me full price of course. The sandwich was basically all bread. Hard bread. Very little filling and basically no sauce at all. If you want a loaf of hard bread for your sandwich, this is your place.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
Wonderful visit. We had the Nicoise Salad, Squash Soup, and Cuban Panini as well as two cookies. Everything was fresh and delicious. Nice atmosphere and good prices.
google avatar

Carol S.

Yelp
Pre-ordered an assortment of pastries for our bridal party and they were very accommodating and ready when we needed them.
google avatar

Briana M.

Yelp
Super cute little spot in town. Fresh baked goods, coffee, and a trendy atmosphere. The lemon poppy seed scone was really good! The ham and cheese croissant was sooooo flaky and delicious. Would definitely recommend if you're in town!
google avatar

Michelle N.

Yelp
The Bread! The open-faced breakfast sandwiches were all so good. Had one of each. A wonderful place to experience.
google avatar

Angie G.

Yelp
Double chocolate sea salt cookie. Best cookie I've ever had. I think about this cookie at least once a week. Cannot wait to go back!!
google avatar

Jim S.

Yelp
Loved this place so much we ate here three times. Lots of delicious baked goods, great inventive breakfast and lunch sandwiches, draught beer, coffees, and pizza (Monday nights only). You order at the counter with seating outside. Dog friendly outside. With good reason, this place is quite popular and lines to order can be lengthy. Staff did a great job handling the numbers. Restrooms were clean. Parking is limited. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Alison G.

Yelp
Really wish they had the sprouted grain bread today! If you're looking for gluten-free, they did the egg scramble with mushrooms on top of a bed of greens and I asked for the aïoli sauce on the side. Really good! They love it if you bring your own to go containers and mugs. Save the earth! Great outdoor seating and back. Sun and shade.

Richard E.

Yelp
Monday night is pizza at the bakery. it's been a big success in White Salmon. The new owners have changed the seating procedure so that it is a bizarre and irrational system. I waited outside in the cold (40's) for nearly an hour and did not get seated. Previously, with my place in line I would have been seated shortly after opening. Feel abused.
google avatar

Thomas G.

Yelp
this place is such a gift. my experience was heavenly - in the sense that it felt like heaven and earth collided into this sweet shop. i wish it was in my local neighborhood, but i'm genuinely grateful it's not because it gives me a reason to frequent the beautiful drive through the gorge. i'm buzzing about white salmon baking co!
google avatar

Roger B.

Yelp
The cardamom buns are crazy good. Baked to a perfect bronze. Somehow they have figured out how to bake these with the inside nicely fluffy without the outside being hard and overly crunchy or burnt. Not too sweet either. Perfect. I also had a ham and cheese (gruyere?) croissant which I killed. And my americano was just right. Only issue was sitting with back towards the counter. I would get bumped every couple minutes by people trying to get by.
google avatar

Terry C.

Yelp
Amazing bakery with some really yummy sandwiches to add to the mix. It was so good that we came back the next day to get another baguette for our drive out of town! Make a point to get here if you to Hood River

Chris C.

Yelp
Really great food BUT lacks in customer service. After queuing in a line that goes out the door, customers will be surprised when getting inside to see 5 staff members hanging out behind the counter not doing much of anything. 15 minute wait time to get a baguette isn't really worth the trouble. Rethink counter management to show you care for your customers experience and their time.
google avatar

Claire G.

Yelp
Truly the best bakery I've ever been to. Everything is delicious. Best coffee and BEST breakfast

James V.

Yelp
This looks like a great bakery based on the line of customers and the wide variety of offerings. Unfortunately I had a bad customer experience on a recent trip. I was excited that they had a vegan brownie. Sadly it was a quite dry and crumbly brownie.
google avatar

Betsy T.

Yelp
Good drip coffee and the reheated breakfast sandwich was tasty but wished that fresh greens or a sauce was added after reheating. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating.
google avatar

Amber C.

Yelp
Oye. I'd love to leave a positive review on how amazing this tiny little bakeries food is, but unfortunately I'll never get the chance to do so. Perhaps a lesson to the owner who may eventually read this review. The friendliness and communication skills of your wait staff weighs very heavy on patrons who eat out and spend their hard earned money at your establishment. These such patrons own a restaurant which regularly runs a minimum 45 minute wait daily every lunch and dinner in beautiful Coeur d'Alene Idaho, so we fully expected to wait an hour plus for food at yours. As we know the old adage states, if there's a wait the food is good enough to wait for. Upon arriving we walked into a busy restaurant, the tiny area by the front door entrance loaded with 8-10 people waiting to be addressed. Thus making it difficult for customers to leave once they have finished eating with a door that opens in on the exit. We stand for 10 minutes and I spot a waitress, I ask her if there's a spot we should all check in. My thought is your entry way is loaded with people and possibly some/any communication, perhaps even a list where guests can sign in with their name, arrival time and party size would clear up that mess. Well instead I'm met with hostility and told with an eye roll, "give me a minute"...perfect I know she's busy. I turn to walk back towards the door and before I take a step she turns and says, "you know, I think were full tonight", with your open sign still on with over an hour until closing. Wow. Now do not get me wrong I fully understand times are hard with staffing, but this entitled little thing has no business working in hospitality. Sadly, we are staying here for a few days and would have likely enjoyed supporting your little business, but instead will not return. Your team is a direct reflection of your establishment. Remember times will get harder and the success of your business rides on more than just the 2601 people who reside in this quaint little town. As for future patrons I hope you are treated with more friendliness, respect and graciousness then we were, and if not I hope the food somehow makes up for their lack of courtesy.

Eliz B.

Yelp
If you are anywhere in the vicinity, it's worth going out of your way for this place. Coffee was great, and we had a vegetarian squash sandwich on toasted whole grain bread that was out of this world delicious. And for dessert, we bought a few of their specialty cardamom cinnamon buns which were so good that we went back and bought more. Just go. You won't regret!!!
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
This is a great little bakery and cafe with delicious breakfast and lunch specials. It has a small patio from which you can glimpse the top of Mt. hood across the river. It looks like they have seating inside under "normal" conditions.

Denise L.

Yelp
We always have to stop here when I'm White Salmon. Great baked goods and had a low key local feel. When the weather is nice the outdoor patio is an oasis.

Lin T.

Yelp
All the pastries were burnt, and the staff and ambiance gave off major gentrification vibes. The service was sad and lazy, and their payment system doesn't even work correctly. I swear some of the food on display looked MOLDY. Please be careful everyone!!
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Four words: Mama Lils Cheddar Loaf. Go buy one, or 12. It makes for the most amazing grilled cheese sandwich. All of their bread is wonderful. And their croissants are to die for.
google avatar

Jan W.

Yelp
A don't miss breakfast while visiting in White Salmon. We thoroughly enjoyed the fresh baked English Muffin Egg & meat sandwiches, and the flaky pastries - Ham & Gruyere Croissant, Berry, and Cheese and Fruit. They also have fresh baked bread and are open for lunch.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
Came here in the morning for some baked goods and really enjoyed it. There was a line in the front, with folks waiting to get in in a socially-distanced manner. Upon entering, it was a tough choice in terms of which things to get - so we got a random sample of lots! Everything we got was really good, albeit a bit pricey. But that said, we would definitely come back. Staff were friendly, outdoor seating was nice (though we walked to the park to eat), and it was a nice experience to try something just across the river from Hood River.

Edith H.

Yelp
OMG everything was delicious. I had the cardamom roll. My husband had the breakfast sandwich. Loved the outdoor seating place. We will return!
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
We ate breakfast here five of the 7 mornings in WS. It's that good. Also, they are open on Monday nights with a fantastic Pizza menu too. The Wild Foraged Mushroom pizza was so good! For breakfast we tried the mushroom toast, avocado toast, goat cheese and prosciutto and a couple others. All were fantastic. Baked goods tried (and loved) cardamom buns, molasses and ginger cookies, chocolate chip cookies, marionberry scone and the olive and rosemary bread. Five freaking stars for everything they made. Probably a good thing I don't live close to this place.
