The 26 Best Restaurants in Anchorage, Alaska | Eater

"A pilgrimage to this tiny old Anchorage diner on the edge of downtown is a worthy adventure, most especially if you order a halibut sandwich. Built tall, crispy fried, with iceberg, tomato and generous tartar sauce, it’s hard to find a better or more affordable one. Bonus if you get a seat at the bar." - Julia O'Malley

Google
Awesome food! We had the halibut sandwich and halibut tacos w/ a cup of the reindeer soup. Everything was delicious! Large portions. Service was great too! Highly recommend.

Steven B

Google
Great little local spot with good food. The reindeer chili was super tasty. The halibut sandwich was a but bland but still good. The halibut melt had more flavor. The coleslaw was amazing. It was very creamy and sweet but wow, it was delicious. Great service.

Google
Man this place is your classic American hole in the wall, and the halibut sammich is guy fieri quality. The kind of thing where you agree to split one with the wife but then wish you hadn't. Erica was our waitress and she's amazing to watch because she never stops moving. 10/Guy Fieri dining experience

Google
Small, no-frills family operation that actually feels like family when you’re there. Open kitchen where you can watch everything happen. Owner caught the fish that morning and battered it right in front of me. Hand-cut fries, both fried to perfection. Great spot for people watching while you eat. Authentic and unpretentious.

Google
EXCELLENT FOOD! Cooked fresh and very good. Had breakfast and the portions were right and solid. Very Busy so plan on an early stop or to wait a little bit. But it was worth the wait. Costs were no worse than any in the area. Alaska is high on food.

Kim Rainwater

Google
The best halibut sandwich, fries & cole slaw around. We did not have to wait to be seated. We arrived around 2pm.

Google
Thank you for never changing. Been coming here for 20 years and the food is still just as good as the first time I had it which most places can’t say these days. Service is always great and selection of drinks from local places is amazing! Still packaged in foil so there is none of those damn to go boxes to throw away. Cheers to a classic Anchorage gem.

Google
I placed an order for pick up, and it took about 5 minutes for them to get to me. It was semi busy so it was understandable. Once they finally asked me what I was there for I told them I had an order for pick up ( the halibut and fries). He handed me the bag and told me I needed to pay. When I told him I paid already he said no I had not. I was confused because I had ordered online. He then looked at it again and realized I had ordered online, but proceeded to tell me that I should just call them next time instead of ordering online because it’s 10% cheaper. Which is great to know :). When I opened my bag on the way back to eat my fries I was disappointed with how greasy, soggy and cold my fries were. They were balled up in foil. I should have went back, but at that point I was just over it. My sandwich was decent, it would have been better if it were warmer. Overall this place is probably somewhere you’d want to sit down and eat vs. order to go.

Yelp
Been going to The White Spot for the last 3 years....unwatchable breakfast and lunch ....blueberry pancakes...biscuits and gravy....Halibut sandwiches are the best and so much more!! All hot and fresh and prepared with pride and perfection.

Yelp
This place lives up to all the top reviews! The food was fabulous. We had the Halibut sandwich wi the fries and Halibut Plate with coleslaw and upped the fries to onion rings. So excellent! The fish is not greasy nor the fries or onion rings! You would think everything was air fried! They tell me it's not but they use separate oil fryers for fish versus the veggies. We also checked out a Cupid reindeer chili! Made me want to eat chili more. Reindeer meat not distinctive but eh come back and try the reindeer hash if you must. Reindeer typically super lean. Great chili and you can get it topped with cheese and onions. Great service! Super friendly and efficient! Seat yourself and follow their rules! They're posted. Walk up to the cash register to check out! I'm only here for two days and hope I make it there again tomorrow!

Yelp
Born and raised Alaskan and finally made it to the White Spot Cafe.. It didn't disappoint!! Cheeseburger and fries were great. Homemade fries are the best.. staff was friendly. Best part was we got parking right in front!!

Yelp
I finally tried this location based on a coworkers recommendation. My first choice was the halibut sandwich. I changed my mind and got the halibut platter. It was 3 pieces of fried halibut, coleslaw, and French fries with a sweet tea. Everything was on point. I see why this restaurant gets rave reviews. The staff is proud of their food that is prepared. The restaurant is clean and nicely laid out. Parking is available curbside or at a nearby parking lot. Cash/Credit/Debit are accepted here.

Yelp
We talked about trying this restaurant several times but just never made for one reason or another. Finally we made the stop on our way to the airport for a trip. It didn't disappoint, we got there at opening time for breakfast and they were busy. Must be a favorite for daily breakfast before work. It was decorated nicely and was clean. Everyone was so nice and friendly. Service was fast and the food was great. The sausage is delicious and portions are generous. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
We ordered breakfast before they quit serving breakfast and we waited a hour for our food that never came. We got a voicemail saying they can't deliver it because the restaurant never got the order because their tablet got stolen 8 months ago. It's almost been a year and they never got a new one probably because they don't care about delivery food or the drivers that deliver it and make a living off it. They haven't updated all the delivery apps I'm sure the pickup apps are working just fine but I can't believe we waited this long for no food and now the rest of the breakfast offers are closed

Yelp
We decided we had to go to this place after the rave reviews about their halibut sandwich. Our server was friendly and helpful. I ordered the famous halibut sandwich with coleslaw and my husband ordered the halibut melt sandwich with fries. The famous sandwich is famous for a reason! Big piece of halibut topped with lettuce tomatoes and tartar sauce. I did ask for extra tartar because I'm a saucy kind of gal! The slaw has a pleasant kick to it. Very tasty! My husband enjoyed his sandwich and the fries were crispy yet soft in the inside. Just how fries should be. The star of the show was the Famous sandwich though. If you're in Anchorage you gotta try it. Remember, they're only open until 3 so get a move on.

Yelp
Cozy 1950s diner. Halibut sandwich, cole slaw, and pickles were terrific. Great, friendly service.

Polly P.

Yelp
Quality food, good service and reasonably priced. Felt local and long standing in community.

Yelp
We got into town late last night.. ok it was 9pm local time but our bodies said it was 1am as we are from the eastern time zone. This morning we needed food and wanted to get downtown. I put in an address for our uber driver to take us to but we asked him where locals go and he told us The White Spot. This local diner reminded me of where I grew up (upper midwest). It is small and friendly and fast and good. Growing up eating venison, it is my goal on our Alaskan vacation to eat a lot of venison so I got the reindeer sausage omelet. Yum! Do it. Eat some reindeer sausage. They also serve lunch so if breakfast isn't your thing and you are downtown, try them for lunch. They had a reindeer chili on the specials board that I was tempted to get. We are only in town for a day before heading to Seward to catch a cruise but if we were going to be here two days I would go back for lunch to see if that chili is as good as my mom's chili!

Yelp
So happy to have found this cafe close to our motel. Loved the music as much as the halibut sandwich & fried mushrooms. Erika was super friendly, service was quick, food was delish.
google avatar

Shay K.

Yelp
I liked it and had the halibut platter. Tasty and cooked just right. It's in a bit of a rough part of downtown but I loved the shops around it.
google avatar

Frank F.

Yelp
I remember it ( the burgers) being soooo much better. Ordered classic cheese burger. Bun was cold and never touched the grill, burger patty was not seasoned and very thin, almost undetectable. Grilled cheese and veggie sandwich got rave reviews as did always the halibut sandwich. Not sure what happened to my burger, but I was not pleased. Try grilling the buns and adding a little meat and seasoning to the patties
google avatar

Mark F.

Yelp
This review is pretty much based solely on the halibut fish sandwich. THE BEST FISH SANDWICH. Basically an elevated filet-o-fish. Perfectly crushed panko, fresh, tender piece of halibut, tangy and creamy tartar sauce, and just enough lettuce to add crunch stuck between soft pieces of bread. The fries were steak fries style and also cooked well. They were really nice and have a great variety of hot sauces (I counted at least 7 sauces). Loved the cafe vibe inside this unassuming strip of stores. Definitely worth going to if you're in Anchorage. Loved it and will come back if we're ever in Anchorage.

Yelp
The White Spot has a special place in the hearts of all of my family. The owners are wonderful people & the food is just as great. I had a bowl of the Smoked Salmon Chowder on our visit a couple weeks ago & have been craving more ever since. We also enjoyed the Raindeer Chili Cheese fries, Pepperjack Cheese sticks & Halibut Sandwich. Highly recommend all of it. Will most definitely be back next time I visit from Nor Cal.
google avatar

Ken L.

Yelp
Small mom and pops type, smalltown feel, fast, friendly service, and the halibut sandwich was really good .
google avatar

Phillip C P.

Yelp
I have been coming to the White Spot since 1970. For all my working years in the downtown area it was one of my favorite restaurants to go to breakfast or lunch. It's breakfast are large, tasty and filling.
google avatar

Alice L.

Yelp
Holy moly! One of my fiancé's coworkers recommended white spot cafe and I am so thankful that he recommended this local eatery. It was pretty busy when we arrived so we sat at the countertop. They had some specials including the reindeer chili and the blackened halibut panini. We decided to try the chili but didn't want to be too full so got the cup, but just know that if you're getting a soup, just get the bowl - it's so much larger just for a couple bucks! My fiancé and I definitely knew we wanted to get their halibut sandwich but also wanted to try the blackened halibut panini. The halibut sandwich was my favorite and was the best fried fish we had on our Alaskan vacation. It was so fresh, having just seen it fried. The coating was not too thick, fried perfectly without overcooking the fish. The panini was definitely different and the blackened halibut was seasoned super well, but I still preferred the famous halibut sandwich, I mean it must be famous for a reason. If you are in anchorage, do yourself a favor and give this spot a try!!

Yelp
Still my favorite go to perfect burgers and fries, breakfast platters and halibut sandwich place in Anchorage.
google avatar

Art K.

Yelp
It's downright good food. Don't come for the ambience just come for the food. A Local told me to come for the halibut. It was fresh and tasty $27, with fresh fries and coleslaw. The coleslaw was fresh a little kick, get it. I had the Cod platter and fries $17 also great. Good selection of beers. The cooks look like they may even gone fishing you know there's plenty of sunlight. Not far from the captain cook hotel.
google avatar

Andy L.

Yelp
Best halibut fish sandwich I've had yet! Simply delicious! The staff and cooks are all very warm and welcoming folks too. I would tip them well. The ambiance in the cafe is locals spot, friendly, and easy-going. Come in hungry and you won't be disappointed! If you're visiting Anchorage, this is a "hole-in-the-wall" must try. Enjoy!
google avatar

Tosin A.

Yelp
This was my first stop when I came to Anchorage. The server was not welcoming at all. When someone in my party mentioned they wanted a milkshake, the server shared it was their least favorite item to make and they weren't in the mood to make it today. The ambiance was okay, but our food came out cold.
google avatar

James Y.

Yelp
Yummy...I asked a customer where to get good Alaskan Halibut and he suggested this place for lunch. I went with the sandwich and so glad I did. It is a small cafe that takes you back to the 50's. There is a counter area in front of the cooking area and several booths. They have magazine articles about their sandwich so was a good start. Ordered and patiently waited. The sandwich was pretty big. When I cut it in half the steam coming from the fish made my mouth water. My first bite and wow, it was soooo good. This was the best fish sandwich I have ever eaten. It is a little pricey but worth it.

Yelp
This was one of my FAV spots in Anchorage. I ordered the famous Halibut fish sandwich and I cannot wait to go back and order another! It was so fresh and even though it was fried, it was not heavy and greasy. I also ordered the Smoked Salmon Chowder which was flavorful and gave me the warmth I needed. The service was wonderful and welcoming and gave family vibes. Another unique feature is its self-community seating and you may be able to gain a new pal by sharing a table with one of the locals!
google avatar

Jon C.

Yelp
The Halibut plate was excellent. Service was slow but there was only one person working all the tables by herself. The restaurant really needs a second server.
google avatar

Brian H.

Yelp
I usually like this spot but the last few times I've been there it seems to be going to hell. I went there yesterday, took some co-workers, for lunch. We arrived and sat and it took 15 minutes after ordering drinks before they finally showed up. Another 15 to place an order and we were there for another 45 before our food came out. There were several tables that came in after us, and even a walk-in order to go, that had food before us. When is it acceptable to take 1.5 hours to get lunch at a diner? The servers seemed overwhelmed and unorganized. Maybe they need more help, I don't know. Not sure I'll be going back to this place for lunch again, good food doesn't make up for substandard service, EVER.
google avatar

Wanda C.

Yelp
OMG!!! This place is fantastic. Great food and exceptional service. It is a great little Cafe, very inviting. Will ome again.
google avatar

Yubo S.

Yelp
Loaded with halibut :) best fish sandwich I ever had. Make sure to get there early. Halibut sandwich sold out quickly.
google avatar

Laurence C.

Yelp
Great service...eclectic non-atmosphere but great food. Specially the variety of grilled cheese sandwiches. Give U the a try! The locals are right!

Eric D.

Yelp
The halibut plate is just worth it. No questions or ambiance just good food. If you want to eat go here.

Susan W.

Yelp
This place comes highly recommended. It's had an old time diner feel and is a local spot . I had the bacon cheeseburger that was good and the French fries are good . My husband had the halibut sandwich and he loved it . Everything is freshly made . The staff was pleasant and nice . I would recommend going to this casual eatery for some good comfort food and friendly service . We will for sure be back .

Yelp
How could I have lived here all these years and never until now eaten here? Wow. My chicken burger was excellent. Chicken was cooked just right and the server made sure the ingredients were just what I asked for. I never thought I'd say this, but the fries are as good as Long Branch Saloon! My sister ordered another sandwich with onion rings and Cole slaw which were just as good and tasty. Service was excellent. Don't wait as long as I have. Just go!

Bill J.

Yelp
Small and convenient. Got a table and the waitress was very courteous. The food was good and plentiful. Wife ordered the blueberry pancake and it was amazing. Gotta try the jams. I had a meet omelet which was filling and pretty good too.

Janel W.

Yelp
It was fine. It's a typical greasy spoon place. Food was about what you'd get at Sami's or Kriners. Nothing special but you won't walk away hungry. It does have history and OG Alaska ambiance. Food was mid.

Karen L.

Yelp
One of the most delightful meals that we had in Anchorage. The service was outstanding and the ambiance hit the spot! The halibut sandwich was a must have.
google avatar

Adam D.

Yelp
One goes here for the halibut. The fried halibut sandwich is probably your best choice over the grilled, though I've had both. Unlike a lot of other fried sandwiches, the flavor of the halibut still comes through. You want the fries, though sometimes they should probably do a better job of changing the oil more frequently. They have Mexican Coke, which is always a plus. Street parking. Bring at least $30. The sandwiches alone are $19. They have been around since 1959, the kind of place you'd expect to see on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

John M.

Yelp
One night stay at Aviator Hotel.....looking for a hot breakfast. The White Spot was perfect. Ordered hot tea and ham and cheese omelette. The plate arrived and I thought I will never finish all this food. Well...I started eating and ended up with a clean plate. This is a perfect cafe for breakfast and lunch. I lived in New Jersey and have been to many diners. This is as good as it gets.
google avatar

Grayson G.

Yelp
The servers were very friendly, and we got our food fairly quickly. The restaurant was decently decorated, nothing too spectacular. The steak was cooked well and the fries were very good. Overall just a nice pit stop for lunch.

Lancer M.

Yelp
The service and food was awesome, the serving size was huge. Everything is bigger in Alaska not Texas I'll guarantee it here. Food was delicious.

John C.

Yelp
Ben eating at the white for almost 40 years. Good food and good service. Halibut sandwiches the best

Terry E.

Yelp
Great food. Fun atmosphere. Good and helpful staff. Reindeer chili recommended. Thanks

Yelp
This classic downtown Anchorage cafe, has been around longer than I've been alive. It still has an 80's look about it, which helped set the scene for their cameo in the 2013 film "Frozen Ground," starring Nicholas Cage. Today, I had the pleasure of ordering breakfast via DoorDash. Chicken fried steak, blueberry stack, biscuits and gravy plate and (2) Mexican cokes. Initially, we only received half our order. We requested a re-delivery of the items not received. The second delivery was fast and included extra Mexican cokes for the inconvenience, we appreciated that. We order chicken fried steaks a lot, and although this one wasn't our favorite, in both taste and texture, it was still good. As a whole, everything was seasoned well, with larger portions to match the higher price points. The blueberry stack was one huge pancake that was almost as thick as it was wide (Im exaggerating...but it was thick). I look forward to trying their lunch menu items soon.

Kathy ..

Yelp
It was good when I was a kid in the 60's and it's still great. To me it's part of the history of Alaska. Lenora was a character but boy were her burgers wonderful (and generous). The current owners have continued the legacy with their burgers, fries, and their famous halibut sandwich.
google avatar

Madeline B.

Yelp
Get the Halibut sandwich! It was So good. Down to earth spot that has good vibes and food.
google avatar

Gina K.

Yelp
I have been going to the white spot for years. If you know, you know. The halibut sandwich is hands down the best in Anchorage IMO. But the burgers are a quick second. Homemade French fries, soups, great breakfast options for early risers. Today, I came in for lunch and got to enjoy watching dog sled teams for the Iditarod being pulled right past the entrance doors down fourth ave. Historical spot for great food and Alaskan nostalgia.

Yelp
I came down here on a whim for lunch the other day while running errands. White Spot Cafe is one of the oldest restaurants in Anchorage along with Peggy's Cafe and The Lucky Wishbone. They have been in business since 1946. The place is very popular with the working lunch crowd and locals who have been dining there for years. I was compelled to visit this place for lunch after reading several positive Yelp reviews on their Halibut Sandwich. The dining room is modest and cozy with a wraparound counter around the kitchen where customers can sit and watch the cook preparing meals. Plenty of memorabilia line the walls along with two large TV screens for watching sports. I was immediately greeted by the staff upon entering and was told to take a seat anywhere. I was ready to try the Halibut Sandwich and I immediately placed my order after receiving my drink. The wait was only a few minutes before it arrived at the table. The sandwich was amazing with a thick filet of halibut and the breading fried to a perfect crisp. Sliced tomatoes, diced lettuce, a slice of American cheese and lots of tartar sauce provided excellent additions to the halibut. This was one of the best fish sandwiches I have had in recent memory. Sometimes simplicity is all that's needed for a great meal. Other items on their menu include burgers like Patty Melts, the Smokey Burger (BBQ sauce, American cheese, and onion rings), and the Loaded Burger (grilled onions, mushrooms, bacon, American and Swiss cheese), a Halibut Caesar Salad, and of course breakfast items like Reindeer Sausage Omelettes and Blueberry Hot Cakes. Good news for those on low-carb or Keto diets: any burger can be ordered as a bowl without the bun. It should come as no surprise that the friendliness of the employees, the warm atmosphere, and the quality of the food have kept this place going for many decades and shows no signs of slowing down.

Terri S.

Yelp
We almost passed this place up because it looks a little shabby on the outside, but this is a great little cafe in downtown Anchorage with super service. My husband had the French Toast Plate, and I had the Veggie omelette; both were delicious! The Hot Cake Plate, which we did not order but looked delicious, was ginormous--the pancake was bigger than the plate. It's definitely worth a stop!
google avatar

Ruby C.

Yelp
In advance of my trip to Anchorage, I had already bookmarked this local eatery since many online forums raved about the fried halibut sandwich. I had a late lunch around 3pm so it wasn't very busy. My food order was of course the fried halibut sandwich.. the tougher choice was which local beer to pair it with. I went with the Agave Gold and it was a good choice. The halibut sandwich was pretty good -- large piece of halibut fried to a golden crisp.. almost perfect except that mine was a tad overcooked so it wasn't as moist. Nothing that some extra tartar sauce couldn't fix though. Make sure you come hungry as I was full halfway through eating my sandwich. Although I ordered fries, I think coleslaw would've been a better choice as you could easily add it into your sandwich to make it more moist. It's listed as USA Today's must try sandwich in Alaska so definitely check it out!

Yelp
Great spot for a lunch of comfort food or a burger. This smallish spot in downtown Anchorage serves a busy lunch fare, and service can be a bit slow due to the limited wait staff. The food, however, won't disappoint. Anything with halibut is excellent.
