Yelp
I came down here on a whim for lunch the other day while running errands. White Spot Cafe is one of the oldest restaurants in Anchorage along with Peggy's Cafe and The Lucky Wishbone. They have been in business since 1946. The place is very popular with the working lunch crowd and locals who have been dining there for years. I was compelled to visit this place for lunch after reading several positive Yelp reviews on their Halibut Sandwich. The dining room is modest and cozy with a wraparound counter around the kitchen where customers can sit and watch the cook preparing meals. Plenty of memorabilia line the walls along with two large TV screens for watching sports. I was immediately greeted by the staff upon entering and was told to take a seat anywhere. I was ready to try the Halibut Sandwich and I immediately placed my order after receiving my drink. The wait was only a few minutes before it arrived at the table.
The sandwich was amazing with a thick filet of halibut and the breading fried to a perfect crisp. Sliced tomatoes, diced lettuce, a slice of American cheese and lots of tartar sauce provided excellent additions to the halibut. This was one of the best fish sandwiches I have had in recent memory. Sometimes simplicity is all that's needed for a great meal. Other items on their menu include burgers like Patty Melts, the Smokey Burger (BBQ sauce, American cheese, and onion rings), and the Loaded Burger (grilled onions, mushrooms, bacon, American and Swiss cheese), a Halibut Caesar Salad, and of course breakfast items like Reindeer Sausage Omelettes and Blueberry Hot Cakes. Good news for those on low-carb or Keto diets: any burger can be ordered as a bowl without the bun. It should come as no surprise that the friendliness of the employees, the warm atmosphere, and the quality of the food have kept this place going for many decades and shows no signs of slowing down.
