Wildwood Barbecue Review - New York - The Infatuation

"The subway during summer. The current season of Top Chef. Lebron James. The new M.I.A. album. Wildwood Barbecue. What do all these things have in common? They all f*cking suck. For those looking for a little bit of suburban mall dining in NYC, you're in luck...just wander over to Union Square East. You can go ahead and add Wildwood to your Brother Jimmy's and TGI Friday's rotation. For those of us who take pride in our never ending culinary crusade through the world's best food city, this is definitely one stop you should avoid. I can think of ten [cuisine slug=“bbq”]BBQ[/cuisine] spots in NYC I'd hit before this, and a couple of bodegas that serve pulled pork sandwiches too. Don't [perfect_for slug=“wasting-your-time-and-money”]Waste Your Time and Money[/perfect_for], unless of course your crew of frat bros are in town to watch the big game and you need to properly let the dawgs out without being judged. In that case, the size (huge), sounds (Nickelback) and food (painfully average) might actually be what you're looking for. Texas Smoked Brisket The only thing Texas about this brisket is the size. People expecting mouth watering Salt Lick style meat need to check back into reality. This brisket is uninspired, overcooked and on par with what you might find at office catering.Carolina Pulled Pork Making bad pulled pork isn't easy, but they succeed in offering up some of the driest shredded pig on the planet. Prepare to douse it in so-so barbecue sauce.Full Cut BBQ Spare Ribs Damn, these ribs were extremely disappointing. I had to work really hard to get what little bit of meat there was off the bone, and was left hungry and unsatisfied.Aged Cheddar Mac & Cheese Worst mac and cheese we've ever tasted. Hands down. It has zero flavor and makes Kraft look like a delicacy. Tater Tots Tater tots are one of those things that can go either way, they're either perfectly crispy and amazing or no good. These were the latter. Food Rundown Dirty Bird Sandwich Great name. This brings me back to my college days. There was a girl we nicknamed the Dirty Bird. She was real tall, extremely naughty and had an uncanny resemblance to Big Bird. She would have destroyed a couple of these pulled chicken sandwiches with pepper jack, bacon and onion rings...mostly because she didn't use much discretion when it came to what she put in her mouth. In our book, this is a safe play and OK sandwich, but come on, it's hard to screw up a chicken sandwich." - Andrew Steinthal

Wildwoods BBQ Review - North Wildwood - Jersey Shore - The Infatuation

"Wildwoods BBQ is what summer backyard barbecues aspire to be when they grow up. Started by two Australian friends (one of whom worked at Hometown Bar-B-Que in Brooklyn), the casual North Wildwood spot is dead serious about smoked meat. Get the super tender pulled pork, a link or two of the Aussie sausage (backyard barbecue hot dogs could never), and don’t skip the brisket—which won them the title of Brisket King NYC in 2023—either straight up or on top of cheese fries. It’s not just for carnivores, though; they also have thoughtful vegetarian options, like pulled mushrooms, or smoked beets with tzatziki and dukkah. They can sell out, so plan to arrive well before they close at 8pm. To avoid disappointment, you can also order online for pickup." - Regan Stephens

Wildwood is a pretty decent BBQ place - I often have lunch here when I'm in the neighborhood, but probably wouldn't travel from elsewhere in the city just to eat here. Pros: the fried chicken meal is huge and excellent, especially the spicy version. It's not quite Nashville hot chicken, but I really like it and there's usually so much you can take home leftovers. I also like the ribs, the dirty bird sandwich, and the cornbread. The staff are friendly and accommodating of big groups, even if you don't have a reservation. It's usually pretty easy to get a table unless it's peak lunch or happy hour time. Cons: service is unbelievably slow. I really have no idea why, the staff seem competent but everything happens at a glacial pace here. Not a good option if you're pressed for time. I personally don't like the vinegar chips that come as a side with many of the sandwiches, and the bacon that's in some of the combos is not very good. As long as you know what you're getting into, time-wise, this is a good Union Square-ish option for lunch.

I love the pulled pork at Wildwood. My sister and I discovered this place a few years back and we have been going ever since. It is in a convenient location near Union Square. The service is always great and with a smile. The restaurant is nice, dim, and casual. The bbq sauces are pretty good as well. You can use as little as you want or as much to flavor the bbq some more. I love their desserts here and sometimes they donate a few dollars to charity. This is an honest and generous business. Highly recommend!

I came here for lunch with my coworkers. Our server was friendly, and the initial chips were good but very limited. Our food came out fairly quickly, and it was cooked well and tasted great. The only real downside is that the prices are relatively high, and I wouldn't come here for a casual lunch. Great atmosphere though!

Wildwood is the best! Between the musical influence and the food you can't go wrong. The food is really yummy and the portions are huge!. You can get the best, best, best food here, especially if you go with multiple people. The desserts are also to die for. Try the beans and mac and cheese too, and go hungry!

The baby back ribs were great (wet rub). They're certainly not the best ive ever had nor did it have that smokiness or that tender fall off the bone, but for bbq in ny it's prolly sufficient. We also shared the monster meat extravaganza. The chicken must not have been very good as it was the last bit standing. The brisket also looked kinda dry imo but I didn't try it. The corn bread was great as were the sweet potato fries. Mac and cheese pretty good too altho i didnt care for the bread crumbs on top. It was kind of lame that they charged $5 per basket of chips bc it seemed complimentary. That said, the salty vinegar chips were really good, felt homemade.

Pork spare ribs and skillet cornbread for me, thanks. End the meal with their s’mores fluffernutter fondue (note: the usage of “fondue” being a bit of a misnomer). The dish came out served in a pot, containing three s’mores graham cracker sandwiches of sorts. Solid BBQ.

Can't comment about most of the entrees. Was there with a big group and got the whole pig roast. It was glorious. And better than the whole pig roast a at Daisey May's.

Decent BBQ, though sauces and quality of meat leave a bit to be desired. Friendly service and comfortable atmosphere.
