In a small cluster of food carts off Andresen Road you will have no problem picking out Winston's British Fish & Chips. Confidently wrapped in the Union Jack it stands out. The buzz from friends was good about Winston's, beyond good, really.
We arrived to see that the cart was not too busy. There was a covered area that was lit up, but there was no place to sit yet. Being a little nippy out we were going to eat in the car anyway. It seems as though seating is coming soon, and so is a menu revamp. Good things to look forward too.
We each ordered the two pieces with chips and mushy peas, but they had run out of the peas, and they offered us extra chips and tartar sauce in its place. I've never had mushy peas, not sure I want to, but I looked at recipes online and they might be worth trying.
We were given a vibrating disk and told it would be 15 or 20 minutes. No problem, good food should be worth waiting for. Our buzzer went off and I went to grab two boxes, brightly decorated in the Union Jack. There were packets of malt vinegar and ketchup, and wrapped napkins with plastic utensils.
It may have only been two pieces of fish, but they were large pieces. There was an equally impressive amount of chips. The fish was hot, obviously right out of the fryer, we doused it in high quality malt vinegar and set about trying the chips. Oh, the chips. Near indescribable, crispy outside, fluffy inside. but there is something more about them. It is a beautiful mystery, one that I am comfortable not knowing.
Vancouver should feel good that we have Winston's here. Good food and good service! The seating area and upcoming menu tweaks are just making a good thing better.
