Delivery Apps Are Creating Incentives to Win Over Small Restaurants | Eater

"A two-year-old restaurant in Ottawa with a second location planned for Las Vegas, built from the outset with third-party delivery in mind. Owner Joelle Parenteau has publicly championed Uber Eats and argued that the discoverability and audience these services provide can be more valuable than paid advertising; she advises independent restaurants to invest in strong branding, unique products, compelling imagery, and good ratings to leverage delivery effectively." - Kristen Hawley

Döner, a Berlin street food Favorite, arrives in Chinatown in early 2021 at Wolf Down - Eater Vegas

"Berlin’s favorite street food finds a home in Chinatown when Wolf Down opens in early 2021. The restaurant from Joelle Parenteau teamed up with Marc Marrone and Todd Lunger at Graffiti Hospitality to bring the restaurant from Ottawa to the Center at Spring Mountain, the long strip mall between Valley View Boulevard and Wynn Road that houses Partage, Izakaya Go, and Take It Easy. 'It’s really great food and a really great price point that’s takeout friendly,' Marrone says. The Berlin döner comes on a sesame-crusted Turkish flatbread that’s stuffed with grilled beef, chicken, or tofu, and then loaded with veggies, such as lettuce, cucumber, tomato, onion, or cabbage. Wolf Down offers two sauces in secret or spicy varieties with a vegan option. Think of it as a riff on the gyro or shawarma. At Wolf Down, customers can order it as a sandwich, rice bowl, or salad. Parenteau says she keeps the menu small so she can focus on doing döners well, and charges the same price for a sandwich, salad, or rice bowl." - Susan Stapleton

Google
The vegan tofu sandwich with both vegan sauces is out of this world! My vegan and non-vegan friends all love it. I’ve ordered from here many times and it is consistently delicious and fresh!

Google
Exceptional food, excellent service. The place is a bit of a hole in the wall. Ordering is a bit sketchy because the menu is minimalist, but wow the food is delicious. My partner loved the gluten-free rice bowl she ordered.

Google
The chicken rice bowl was heaven on earth, this plate is juicy and tasty and it’s just $15,enough to feed two, every bite was just amazing and there’s no wait.!!!

Google
(TLDR; not gluten free, advertises gluten free.) Went in at 8:45pm hoping to get a celiac accommodating as it is advertised on their website that their chicken rice bowl is gluten free AND their open until 12am. Asked if we could the chicken rice bowl to which 2 workers had to discuss something in private, to which they responded that they could not offer anything that is gluten free. Extremely disappointed and will make it a point to tell others not to go if they are gluten free.

Stopped in for lunch as I was passing through Ottawa. Amazing sandwich! Absolutely delicious and felt very healthy. The bun was perfection. Great sauce, super simple menu options. Heavily recommend.

Google
Got the beef sandwich, everything on it, secret and spicy sauce! Amazing. So filling, balanced & satisfied every taste bud. The secret sauce has a nice dill flavour & the spicy sauce isn’t obnoxious- the spice just dances on your tongue while blending with the other flavours. It is a big sandwich but surprisingly was not falling apart or too messy to eat (Just make sure you got enough napkins!) overall so delicious.

Google
quality has been getting worse over the past year to the point i stopped going with such expensive prices and mediocre quality. i decided to give it a shot as I was walking by today. I ordered the tofu sandwich and i am not joking about 5-10 minutes after finishing i felt extremely ill and got sick. definitely wont be eating here anymore. disappointing because when it first opened it was really quite good. the prices are absolutely unreasonable even IF the food DIDN'T make you sick….. 1 star. The workers were lovely however

Google
I went in tonight and got myself a salad on my way home from work. I ordered it with the secret sauce, however when I got home and tried to eat it noticed it was made with the spicy sauce so I couldn’t eat it(as I have bad acid reflux). I love their food but was very disappointed to realize I spent $20 on a salad I couldn’t eat.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for donairs, and apparently the Germans are too, calling it doner. Wolf Down is Ottawa's latest German doner restaurant. Tasty meat, spicy sauce and a delicious sandwich that I forgot to photograph made for a delightful lunch. My only complaint: Ottawa folks, stop being so cheap! When I asked to add a tip before I tapped my credit card, the guy at the counter had to stop and figure things out - nobody had done it before.

Yelp
Great quality food as well as quantity, delicious savory items, I highly recommend this spot, you will be satisfied.

Yelp
I was hungry and looking for takeout for lunch, and Wolf Down is nearby to my apartment. Ordering was easy, though I didn't get any updates on their system until my food was ready for pickup. The restaurant seemed clean and is in a good location. The person who passed off my order to me seemed friendly enough. The food just wasn't very inspiring. I ordered a Tofu Doner bowl, and while it was serviceable, I wouldn't necessarily order it again. The texture of the tofu was really good for me, but maybe the bowl would have benefited from more of the secret sauce.

Yelp
My husband and I came here for some takeout and it was great! Their menu is very simple, sandwich, salad or rice bowl. Chicken, beef or tofu. Toppings include lettuce (iceberg), red cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers and onions. Sauces are special sauce or spicy sauce (or both). Whatever your choice, it's $12.50. I got the Chicken Rice Bowl with all the toppings except for onions. Both sauces, but light on the sauce. My husband got the beef Donair sandwich with all the toppings and both sauces. My rice bowl was delicious! I loved that the chicken was crispy. Ingredients were fresh. And they didn't overdo it with the sauce. It was perfect. The tomatoes are slices as are the cucumbers. They are the same in the bowl as in the sandwich. I think in the bowl, diced would be better, but that's just a suggestion. It was still really good. The chicken was lean real chicken breast. It was well seasoned and the sauces were flavourful. The spicy sauce is not that spicy. The special sauce is creamy. I had a bite of my husband's sandwich and I enjoyed it too. The Donair meat was great. Didn't taste like cardboard, which is my common complaint with Donair. They went easy on the sauce for his sandwich too, which I liked, hehe. And they didn't give him onions either, haha. That made the sharing of his sandwich more enjoyable for me, so I'm not complaining, and it actually didn't bother him, even though he loves onions, lol. So I think they switch up their bread provider often. I advised the staff I couldn't eat sesame seeds and he advised me the bowl did not contain sesame seeds and their bread sometimes does, but not currently. Score for me, hubby had no excuse not to share his sandwich with me then, lol (don't worry, I shared my bowl with him too). Staff were super nice. They sell some branded merchandise in the store. They have some patio seating in front of the store, but just 2 tables. We enjoyed our meal there and would eat food from there again. Street parking only.

Yelp
I love their sandwiches. Everything from the bread to the protein is delicious. I personally prefer the chicken but the beef is good too.

Yelp
This place offers wypipo interpretations of Middle Eastern cuisine. It's for tourists. There is a reason why it's seating is always empty but the other legit kebab restaurants within blocks have line ups.

Yelp
This....is...the...best...thing...that...I...have...had...in...Ottawa...in...the........LONGEST TIME! The hubby ran into Wolf Down to grab some doners. I got the tofu one, he got the other two choices. I believe it was steak and chicken. Clean & simple menu. Clean, fresh ingredients. I got my tofu doner all dressed: purple cabbage, lettuce, cucumber, onion, the white sauce and the spicy sauce. That spicy sauce was BOMB, and nothing like I have had before. I loved that it had a hint of curry in it. Delicious! The bread/bun was amazing, soft and chewy. It's made by art is in bakery. Tofu was crispy and seasoned well. It tasted a lot like greek style chicken. Get the tofu doner! Trust me!

Yelp
Went here for my lunch break for the first time. It was really delicious. I ordered the rice and chicken bowl (box?) with all the toppings and both their secret and spicy sauces. Seriously good, and big portions. I think I paid around $15 which is reasonable considering the size. Recommend!

Yelp
The menu is pretty small and simple. My boyfriend and I both opted for sandwiches. We tried both the chicken and the beef. It was pretty tasty and the ingredients were fresh. But my boyfriend felt like the portion wasn't enough. The service was really friendly! However, I'm not sure this is something I would usually crave and have at the top of my mind to come back for.

Yelp
Was craving a filling big lunch after a late night out and this place came through. Not only was the food fresh and delicious, the portions were massive. I don't eat dairy and usually miss out on tasty secure so I Love love loved that they offer vegan options.

Yelp
Enjoyed the modern streamlined decor for this Donaire joint. Upbeat music and staff that lol like they enjoy being there add to the overall vibe. The menu is limited, beef, chicken or tofu Donaire. What makes it Berlin street food? The sauces and the sandwich wrap. Quite different from a typical Donaire in Ottawa. Overall enjoyed the experience. Would I recommend? Yes Would I return? Yes

Yelp
A great place to grab a simple meal. Their menu is straightforward - beef, chicken or tofu in a sandwich, bowl, or salad format with your choice of veggies and sauce. I had the chicken doner and will return to get it again. Staff were friendly and personable.

Yelp
I don't normally write yelp reviews, however I am making an exception for this Fantastic establishment. Visited this place with my girlfriend on a Saturday evening; we meant to go Friday upon arriving in the city but everything was sold out. I got the beef döner sandwich, and she got the Tofu (vegan). As a meat eater the vegan tofu was the best I've ever had. The meat itself was solid, and the artisanal bread was exceptional. Get the spicy sauce--it's a good balance of sweet and spicy, and adds a layer of complexity to the symphony of the sandwich. Highly Recommend!! My girlfriend really liked the bread

Manuela C.

Yelp
Nice menu, good options. Food is pretty decent but lacks seasoning. Service was quick and efficient, i ordered it through uber eats and it got here within 20 min!!! (I live 10 min drive away) Overall good just a little bit of disappointment w the food.

Ajara B.

Yelp
Ordered home delivery and the food came in cold - probably because they didn't cook it fresh as the delivery took only 6 minutes. The beef was dry and stale. Sauce tasted like regular mayo - what's so "secret" about it? The rice was overcooked and soggy. Few of the toppings were messed up - why provide the options to choose from if you don't follow the instructions? The portion was minuscule - which I was glad about because I didn't wanted to eat it all. I never thought I would say this, but Shawarma King does better platters for half the price. Avoid.

Yelp
First time here. Won't be my last. Their doner's are what panini's aspire to be. Fresh, plentiful and delicious. Real nice find. You gotta eat here.

Yelp
Awesome Doner! Great grab and go meal, and I love how they keep it simple on their menu. The bread they used was also exceptional, and deserves its own praise. Would recommend if you're interested in trying something new.

Yelp
(+) The bread and the secret sauce, staff isn't as pretentious as I thought (-) Meat is dry and jerky texture; they they load the toppings at the top so you're eating just lettuce you get to the dank mounds of meat at the bottom *SEATING - Listen to yr customers - 3 large round tables & an uncomfortable, narrow looking bar that faces a white wall won't cut it. It wasn't even busy and I couldn't sit there. $$$$$Price is way too expensive all things considering. If it were $8, Id raise to 4 stars. Vibe: it's kind of cold and minimal, all white, I found it awkward to be in there.

Gamboo J.

Yelp
One of the best doners I've had so far! It's tasty with high quality grilled meat and vegetables. They also have a veggie doner for vegans! I would definitely come back to this place next time I visit Ottawa!

Yelp
Small menu (everything they serve is written on the wall behind in the photo!) But very tastey. The sandwich gets a little messy when you eat it, but the meat and the sauce is delicious! I ordered the beef, it was very good. Definitely recommend if you are looking for a quick lunch place!

Yelp
Holy shit this place is good. Hands down the best place to grab a bite. The atmosphere is great, the food is amazing, and the service was friendly. Highly recommend trying this place out for good Döner.

Yelp
Honestly, you guys absolutely crushed this. Went twice in the first 2 days, and both experiences were equally impressive. The ingredients were fresh and well sourced, sauces amazing, and a custom sourdough bread to die for. The flavour profile is just incredible. This place is hands down my new favourite. Kudos to the staff for being so friendly and quick despite being insanely busy during opening weekend. Going back this week 100%

Yelp
The food is fresh and made in front of you. The sauces really enhances then flavour. I've been there twice already this week. Highly recommend.

Nicole D.

Yelp
As a vegan I was excited to see they had had a donair option for me. The bread was yummy, the veggies crisp and fresh, the sauce tasty, but the tofu was bland. It had nice, crispy edges but was woefully lacking in seasoning. I think that doing a long marinating step before putting it on the spit would really jazz it up. Then this place would probably become a regular haunt for me. Service was great and I love the minimalist decor. It's a super-messy thing to eat, so mind your shirt.

Youssef M.

Yelp
Delicious food and great service. Kudos to Tyus for helping cater to my tastebuds by recommending the right condiments for my delicious chicken döner!

Don M.

Yelp
We followed the realization of this business as it built from concept to reality, and were there on opening day to check it out. They did not disappoint - Berlin Doner at its best for folks who can't afford to fly there to try it out. Beef, chicken and tofu versions in generous portions (chicken is our favourite). Very tempting to drop in there all the time, as we live nearby. The focus is on takeout (this is street food after all), but there are tables for folks who can spare a minute to sit down and enjoy. Kudos to Joelle and company on a great food idea - realized!

Piet A.

Yelp
Great idea done wrong. For such a simple menu (choice of 3 proteins, choice of 5 toppings, choice of 2 sauce and bread) everything should be spot on. The 2 sauces are not great and the spicy sauce is basically really sugary BBQ sauce. This place would not fly in Berlin. It wouldn't even fly in Montreal or Toronto. Should be called Belin Style Street Food, the style being very open to interpretation

Sarah A.

Yelp
A huge congrats to the team behind this stylish new place in Ottawa! The food was beyond delicious, fresh and totally exceeded my expectations! I have been back multiple times, have tried all the options and am blown away! I love that there is a vegan version and that any of the options can be made into the most delicious salad! Highly recommend checking this place out!
