Darren Teoh Shows Us His Slice of Kuala Lumpur

"There are a myriad of places to go. Kuala Lumpur is a fusion of multiple cultures that intertwine and overlap. I often take overseas friends to places like Wong Ah Wah on Jalan Alor, where the bustling street offers a unique experience beyond just the food." - Theri Burhan

The 38 Best Kuala Lumpur Restaurants | Eater

"Deep within the heart of the buzzing Jalan Alor night market, tables fill the street outside Wong Ah Wah and crowd beneath the covered patio. Both are good spots for people-watching while savoring saucy plates of barbecued chicken wings and platters of juicy chicken, beef, or mutton satay skewers. [$$]" - Ian Poh Jin Tze

The food tastes average, nothing fancy. Most of the grilled fish’s are tasteless. Staff is very hectic but helpful. This is a very busy restaurant among tourists. Decent time taken to serve the food but not all at once. Some came at the end. The fresh drinks are a waste. Better to drink some soda. Outside seating area is very hot. No fans. Try the noodles and fried rice. One two things we found tasty. 😋

No need to queue, yet the place is consistently busy — clearly a spot popular with tourists. The chicken wings are decent (though I remember them tasting better a decade ago). The satay is flavorful, but half of it is just fat and tendon. Other dishes are passable, but lack authenticity. Watch out: they’ll charge you for tissues without mentioning it, and someone might come to collect payment before all the food is even served. Very smoky outside.

Satay is so rough and hard to chew. Meat also doesn’t taste fresh. Wings were good. Sting ray was better than expected. Very flavorful and soft. Carrot juice… it’s the worst carrot juice I have had. Just super water down and got no taste at all.

Google
Every food is average. Food is all pre-prepared. Warm not hot. BBQ chicken wings would say well grilled . However, satay tasted normal. Few dishes were salty . The clams not fresh. Indeed over-rated.

There’s air-conditioned and outdoor seatings. Don’t expect good service, the staff were kinda hostile but it’s ok, just go there for the food. The chicken wings (RM4.50 each) were the best dish, rarely have bbq wings that have crispy skin. Chicken Satay (RM1.80 each) was kinda dry but very flavorful. Stingray/ Roast Fish (RM 50) is very fresh. Dai Lok Mee (RM13.50) was alright.

I will never return to this place again. The service was absolutely horrible — staff were rude and dismissive, with zero regard for customer experience. The food was average at best, and to make things worse, the portions were small even though we ordered the large size and is not enough for 4 pax. Overall, a very disappointing visit. Not worth the hype.

I ate at a nearby store a few days ago, and it was delicious, so I came back and ate it here again. But I was so disappointed because the taste and service were not so good. The worst thing was that when I asked about the price of the wet tissue at the end of the payment, I didn't order it, but I included it in the price for using what was on the table. I think it's the worst restaurant in Kuala Lumpur. There are a lot of Google reviews, and I can see why the ratings aren't good...

Google
Visited Wong Ah Wah Restaurant many times, and I like their food, especially their mouth-watering chicken wings - slightly charred, spicy, and grilled to perfection. The salted egg sotong and sambal kangkong were also highlights. The barbecue stingray was well-grilled, though I prefer it with sambal spread. Hokkien noodles didn't quite hit the mark. The indoor seating and quirky server added to the experience - funny, but maybe a bit rough. Overall, great food and ambience.

Yelp
The famous Wong Ah Wah on Jalan Alor street! My friend who grew up in Kuala Lumpur says she tried many of the restaurants on Jalan alor and this place remains her favorite. I personally found it to be delicious and has the classic authentic Chinese food taste. It is an outdoor restaurant on the street and it is very crowded and popular even during rainy days. Service is your typical chinese restaurant - they're known for their food not necessarily their hospitality so you may have to flag down the server many times. I personally think that adds to the authenticity of it all though! The stingray fish is delicious! Also recommend you try their chicken wings that they are famous for.

Yelp
Wong Ah Wah is a must when strolling down Jalan Alor in Bukit Bintang. The chicken wings are some of the best I've ever tasted... marinated and roasted to perfection. Also cannot go wrong with the satay here... keep in mind that there is a minimum order of 10 skewers. Service was pretty much nonexistent unless you're ordering and paying. You can sit outside where it's very lively or sit inside with aircon. If you're hungry for a little snack and don't know where to eat nearby, check out WAW.

Yelp
Chicken wings & Hokkien mee was delicious Stir fry Vegetables & small lala was good too. But ever disappointed with the satay. Chicken satay was ok. Lamb satay was not good because the meat was way too tough to chew.

Yelp
McWings have more flavor! Honestly, if the chicken wings are supposed to be something special then I've had better wings at McDonalds in Hong Kong.

Yelp
This spot near the end of Jalan Alor probably gets the most press of any of the vendors. Thing is, most of the restos here offer mostly the same things, even the hyped chicken wings are available at several different vendors. I would say, basically go by feel and crowds when you select a place on Jalan Alor. Surprisingly, food here is not THAT cheap, especially if you order seafood, or more specifically crab. But you can get by ok if you stick with the wings, a small fish and some noodles or fried rice. There is a Thai spot back up the street a couple booths that does a bigger steamed fish that was pretty memorable. The vendor directly across from WAW does crab a few more different styles, but again, pricey. The good thing about Jalan Alor is the late night hours. That's about the only time I ever pay a visit now.

Yelp
Delicious food! We got here early and lucky we did since the later it got the more people lined up to get a table. We had pork fried rice, a sautéed vegetable outlet server suggested and vermicelli noodles with chicken. Everything was delicious. We saw satay go by so we ordered some chicken and beef satay. Loved all of the food, definitely worth a stop!

Yelp
While I understand that what you may expect at a hawker stall is not very much, this place was blatantly rude to us and had the gall to treat us like it's our fault. We went here for the famous charcoal wings, and we weren't disappointed. But from the moment we walked in the staff was hostile to us. The first man who served us was yelling at my girlfriend for asking to clarify that we ordered 6 wings when he wrote down three. When our wings arrived, we paid. Our bill reached 75 ringgit so we paid with 100 note. They forgot to return us change so we asked multiple times for help. The woman who was continually walking by mocked us and treated us as if we were being difficult. She pointed us to her manager who pushed us on to a subordinate. After what must have been a half hour, we received our change, but not before we were made to feel like difficult customers when in reality, we were at risk of not being returned our money. You can decide whether the poor service is enough reason to avoid this place. While the wings were fantastic, there are far more enjoyable places on Jalan Alor.

Yelp
Located at the end of Jalan Alor, Wong Ah Wah gets a lot of fame within the Chinese (and Chinese Malay) community as written in Chinese blogs. Unfortunately, Wong Ah Wah does not live quite to the hype of what people have written. FOOD: We got the chicken wings, satay, and shrimp. I will say only the chicken wings are worth it and the satay is pretty decent. The shrimp (or any seafood for that matter) are pretty pricey by Malaysian standards and should be avoided here. I thought the shrimp was alright, nothing to rave about. The wings though had the right amount of taste and deliciousness to it. Not quite like Korean wings, but similar in some aspects, it is quite delicious with the right amount of seasoning and cooked to perfection! SERVICE: Someone does attend to you. Nothing much to say here. Mandarin is definitely spoken here and is pretty busy. A place to visit on your tourist spot on Jalan Alor, but only 3 stars for me.

Yelp
Let me sum it up: 1. Their famous chicken wings aren't that awesome. 2. You can find just as good or better food elsewhere. 3. Service is a bit rude. 4. You are rushed to finish your meal even though no one is waiting. 5. I was skeptical on their math for the bill. There are so many other places to try that is not called Wong Ah Wah in Kuala Lumpur.

Yelp
Arrogant, unwelcoming, dishonest, dirty. Should I keep going? And their food is mediocre at best. I felt like they am were doing me a favor to serve me dinner. Just awful.

Yelp
If you haven't been to Wong Ah Wah at Jalan Alor, you are either living under the rocks or you're not from KL. Famous for their chicken wings are seafood, WAW is thronged by tourists and locals every night. No reservations are allowed. So try your luck next time and come early because on weekends, it is almost impossible to get a table without at least a 30mins wait. But the delicious chicken wings and sting ray are worth the wait.

Yelp
Jalan Alor is a must when visiting KL and Wong Ah Wah seemed to be the obligatory stop to make with only one night to visit the famed foodie street. We ordered a mixed satay, squid with salted egg, chicken wings, and pork noodles. The dishes come in different sizes which is nice because you can customize how much of each item you want to try. The plate of wings was piled high with perfectly barbecued chicken with crispy skin and an amazing sauce. The wings are definitely different from the usual buffalo wings in the United States but they were absolutely delicious. The satay was ok but nothing memorable while the squid and pork noodles were on point. Service was fine and the food came out relatively quickly. We finished the meal with some amazing coconut ice cream from a stand across the street. YUMM!

Yelp
Good wings. Decent grill fish. Weird and rude service. Our waiter was kinda annoyed that he has to serve us. He kept telling us they are very busy and we need to hurry up, oh and he said don't complain if the food doesn't come for a long time because ,ah-humn, they are very busy. At this point I was like, .... uh ok. We shared a table with 2 other people because the resturant was super packed. He kept yelling at the people that were sitting at the same table because they got their receipt wet. Then the other people got super annoy that he wouldn't pack up the food they had left over. The food took a decent amount of time but the rude waiter didn't come back to check on us until we did him the favor of getting our bill.

Yelp
Forget about their chicken wings, they are overrated. Instead get the salted egg sotong (squid), kam heong lala (golden fragrant clams), belacan kang kong (water spinach in spicy shrimp sauce), mutton satay(avoid the chicken) , and a heaping bowl of white rice to wash it all down. Order quick and expect rude service. The food will be more than worth it. (Went to one of their competitors a few doors down called Meng Kee a few days later, severely regretted it. Wong Ah Wah is king.)

Yelp
It's ok. Overhyped - most definitely. And therefore overpriced. Barely any meat served and hidden charges in your bill. Quite a lot of self-importance for a food place that looks like an old cafeteria. It's clean though and you should visit at least once if you're curious.

Yelp
It is not acceptable if you live in KL your entire life and not venture into Jalan Alor. It is even more unacceptable if you ventured into Jalan Alor and not have the Chicken Wings here. The most famous and most talked about chicken wings are right here, flocked by massive crowds and tourists, you will know how known it is. I would I've had my fair share of the taste, but I find it very challenging to visit the place now. Prices are expensive now and even if you want to have some, it's hard to even get your order up. I guess it's safe to say it's one of the tourist trap in KL nowadays. It's just a must have whenever you're visiting. The wings are undeniably delicious, but I once heard that the most dangerous pain is the pain you can't feel. Understand? The pain here is the pain in your wallet, you'll be sticking up so many wings, that you will only see the damage done after. Also, you probably won't get a seat and have to wait a long while, nevertheless, as I said, you must have it at least once.

Yelp
If you've not been here, you've not been to Jalan Alor. This is absolutely the best restaurant you can get on this stretch of the road. First off, don't be surprise if you couldn't get a seat even if the restaurant stretches 3 shop lots apart. My friends and I had to split and stand across 3 shop lots just to see who gets a table first. Walking in you'll notice that the walls are plastered with a lot of group pictures. And if you're a fan of Chinese celebrities. You'll find that this place is just so amazing to be able to attract all these stars. There are tons of food to order here but do make sure you get at least one seafood and their chicken wing. Just go crazy and order two for each person present. Staff service might seem slow and unresponsive but that is just because of the crazy crowd and everyone is pre occupied so do give them some time to react. Pricing here is absolutely reasonable for the portion and their taste is amazing.

Yelp
This is probably one of the most famous places in KL to eat chicken wings. You can ask anyone or Google places to have chicken wing and majority of them will tell you about Wong Ah Wah. However, the quality of the chicken wings have definitely dropped, most likely due to the mass demand and production of the chicken wings. As I've had a fair amount of BBQ-ing chicken wings, I can honestly say that they are not very easy to make and it also takes time. Each chicken wing costs RM3.20. Other than chicken wings, they have a lot of other stuff as well like seafood. But the service is not very friendly there. When I visited and ask the person to recommend some food, she just threw me the menu and asked me to look myself. I also requested for tissue countless of times and they kept saying that they'll bring it to me but they didn't. The other thing about Jalan Alor is that the parking and the jam. On weekends you'll find it very difficult to find parking and you'll have to round that area a couple of times. It is not a very long stretch of road, but because of the jam it can take up to 15mins to make a round. I've definitely had better chicken wings elsewhere.

Yelp
Wong Ah Wah chicken wings is one of the most famous food in Jalan Alor. Whenever you mention Jalan Alor, people will say "oh, that chicken wing place ar?". Yeah, that's how famous Wong Ah Wah's chicken wing is. If you've yet to try it, what are you waiting for? Some may think that they are overrated, but to me, I think that they taste alright. Just that their price is a little steep. It'll cost you a bomb without you even realizing because chicken wings is so tiny, by the time you feel full you would be eating your tenth piece already. One thing about this place is, they're always packed with tourists which is also why the food here are pricy (tourist price). I like bringing my friends (from outstation) here too. Hehe.. Due to its popularity, it's difficult to get a seat. Hence, be prepared to wait for your seat. To have delicious food, patience is required. Chicken wings especially because they need time to bbq the wings to perfection!

Yelp
Jalan Alor is probably one of the more established tourists attractions in Kuala Lumpur during the night, and here is famous for having supper and the experience of dining at road side restaurants. Jalan Alor is also probably famous among the locals as one of the places in Kuala Lumpur that sells one of the best BBQ chicken wings and that is precisely why I'm writing a review about Wong Ah Wah Restaurant that is situated along Jalan Alor. This is the place that serves the awesome and juicy BBQ chicken wings that people are raving about. This restaurant is always packed with customers on any given night, and I'm pretty impressed that people are really well informed when it comes to places with good food. I would visit Wong Ah Wah once in awhile to savour their awesome BBQ chicken wings. However, I noticed that they have increased their prices recently, I guess that is one of the set-backs when you're favourite shop have gotten awfully famous! Despite that, I'm still coming back for more!

Yelp
You'll be terribly disappointed if you think that the constant long line up means that the food is good or cheap. I came to eat at this restaurant after reading the good reviews about the chicken and noodles. After stepping in the restaurant, I was yelled at to quickly place my order and told that I only have an hour to eat and that I do not have the leisure to go through the menu as there is a long line up. Stunned, I quickly ordered their famous chicken and noodles hoping that their good food will compensate for their rude service. The chicken looked delightful to my eyes but the flavour was a total disappointment, it was just blah and same goes for the noodles. The price was extremely expensive(not sure how the bill came up to a couple hundred) so if you are thinking about going there save yourself the trouble and go to lot 10. Food is cleaner, tastier and cheaper there!

Yelp
The best wings I've ever had in my life!!! I bring all my visiting friends here to impressed too ;-) it's also our ladies night go to spot after a night of dancing & drinking. The wings are grilled to perfection everytime we go there. Even after a dozen it never leaves you feeling heavy. The hot sauce on the side is equally delicious. Of course don't forget to eat your veggies while chowing down a dozen wings. The okra and French beans never disappoint and trust me you'll thanked me later too! I usually get them w garlic (several options to choose) the prawns are also large in size and delicious with sauce.... another great pick. We sometimes come w our small children too but I bring my own kids plates and utensils. The only thing I'm skeptical of will be the cleaningless so bring your own wipes and tissues. Other than that come w a huge appetite. Definitely a gem in jalan alor!

Yelp
Don't eat here. There is nothing special about the food. You'll find comparable or even better food at Mall Food Courts.

Alex Z.

Yelp
Very Bad services and they keeps asking you to order more food.Because they cooperate with tour agency group and They don't really care about individual customer. Food is just ok. But it is more expensive than other restaurants around here.
