Wooden Spoon was one of the restaurants open on New Year's Day for brunch with my family before I embarked on my trip, so we gathered there and had a pretty good brunch. There were seven of us, four adults and three children and we ordered five dishes and shared with the kids. Two of us ordered The Big Spoon and two ordered the House Hash and we ordered the Soft Scrambled Eggs with Salmon for the table. We more or less ate from all the plates in order to try everything family style. The Big Spoon came with two pancakes as well as a slice of toast, two strips of bacon, two eggs, a small fruit cup, and a mound of potatoes that looked really dark but were delicious. The House Hash came with a sunny side up egg, short ribs (in cubes, not chopped up), pickled veggies, potatoes, spinach, and a mustard cream. Everything was pretty good, but not stand-out good; it's what would be expected at any breakfast place. The pancakes weren't as fluffy and light as I would've liked, but the kids ate them and were happy. The potatoes, even though they looked exceptionally dark when they came to the table, were good; they were panfried with some herbs and, I think, some citrus. The baby and one child really liked the salmon in the soft scrambled eggs and I enjoyed the nicely dressed arugula that came with that dish. All in all, everything was good but rather overpriced (coffee was $5 a cup and no refills were offered!). Just have to suck it up and figure it was the price we had to pay for a restaurant to be open on a major holiday!
Just want to note that while the waitperson who checked us in and did part of the serving for our table was really nice, friendly, and accommodating, the other waitperson (baseball cap, pigtail) was rather condescending, rude, and smug; I wouldn't want to be waited on by that second person again.
Happy New Year, all... even to that Scrooge!
