The Best Spots to Eat at Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) | Eater Chicago

Where To Eat At Midway Airport - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Located in Concourse A, Food Hall There are a handful of Woodgrains throughout the suburbs of Chicago and St. Louis, serving coal-fired Neapolitan pizza with toppings like sriracha BBQ chicken. The Midway location also offers an Italian beef and hot giardiniera specialty pie, and breakfast pizzas topped with eggs. This is one of the better options at the airport and everything is made fresh to go, so plan for enough time (at least 20 minutes) before your boarding call. Like most things at an airport, it’s expensive, but it beats Home Run Inn." - veda kilaru

Fast, Decent Pizza, Wraps and Fresh Salads – Woodgrain Pizzeria Delivers at the Airport Was this the best pizza I’ve ever had? No. But for airport fare, it was decent—cheesy, cooked quickly, and thoroughly satisfying. They didn’t have slices ready, but a full pizza was crafted and cooked in just about 5 minutes. The mozzarella slice hit the spot without turning to the dark side of sogginess. Also spotted: wraps and fresh salad options for those choosing the lighter path. Prices? Surprisingly fair for this airport outpost. For travelers seeking quick, hot, and reliable food without emptying their credits—Woodgrain Pizzeria is a solid choice.

Google
Woodgrain Pizzeria seemed to have the best reviews of any food offerings on my recent layover at Midway so even though my gate was in B terminal I had plenty of time to walk to their location in A terminal. The employee that took my order was very nice, and I appreciated that you are not pressed to give a 20% or more tip at checkout like most places. My order was made, and after watching the gal that was preparing pizza, I wasn't too hopeful for a good outcome. She slid the pizza so hard off the board into the oven that half of my pizza slid off and proceeded to smoke and burn in the fired oven. The gal that took my order noticed. She could have looked the other way and let me have a half burned/ half topped pizza, but she didn't. She took it out and threw it away, cleaned up the mess in theoven, and proceeded to make a freshly made pizza for me. She then apologized for the delay and offered to comp me a beverage which I didn't need so I thanked her directly for making me a new pizza and tipped her directly for her efforts cleaning up after the other employee's mess. I didn't catch her name, but if you worked lunch shift on May 21st and see this review, thank you! Your attention to detail and customer service was awesome and will take you places in your future. Pizza was okay for airport food! Airline staff was ordering lunch there, too, and they probably are in the know for best locations to eat from on break in the airport!

Google
We ordered a personal size and a slice. The made to order pizza was delicious for airport food. Piping hot, good cheese and crispy/soft crust. Sausage was more of what you expect from a dominos/Pizza Hut/frozen vs sausage that tastes like real meat. Otherwise, great. Would return here.

Lauren B

Google
My first time at this airport, I had a few different options for pizza, and based on reviews and pictures I decided to check this place out on my 5-hour layover. I got the Sausage and Pepper Specialty Pizza and added banana peppers. Service was quick, there was no line around 5pm on a Sunday. Pizza was better than I expected, the only issue I had is that the slices weren't fully cut and when I would pull up the pizza the entire top would slide off. I ended up having to cut it with a knife and put the toppings back on the pizza. Other than that everything else was good. Also tried their Joe's Half and Half Tea, it was very tasty but 50 some grams of sugar.

Patricia A.

Google
I was happy to see they offered a gluten free option (although cross-contamination is a high risk). The pizza was excellent, and the service was very good. It was not a busy time at the airport - probably made my great experience possible. If you have the time to wait for a delicious pizza this is the place! But if you are in a hurry go somewhere else.

Andrew P.

Google
Overall decent experience. Line can get quite long. The flavor of the pizza was good and the crust was nice, but the center of the pizza was soggy and undercooked. I also had the Mediterranean chicken salad which was good. However the dressing lacked flavor.

R.S I.

Google
Our Veggie pizza was undercooked. Too thick a crust for a Neapolitan pizza. Veggie wrap was okay. Front desk is good at customer service. But unfortunately they are understaffed like many other places, I can see they are constantly working but wait times were high.

Google
Pizza is always a good option, when your looking for airport food. Woodgrain s pizza are made fresh, and you have options of toppings at a additional price. They even offer a breakfast pizza. Unlike their restaurants outside of the airport, their salads are premade. So the option to create your own, is not available here.

Yelp
Airport pizza? Shockingly delicious!! Service was friendly, too. We built our own 6" that was more like a 9" for about $15 with tip and everything.

Arthur W.

Yelp
The shrank the pizza to personal pans and charge more money. The service is absolutely horrible! We are in an airport. They take for ever to make your food. They are slow and extremely rude! This use to be my favorite spot in the airport to eat! Not I feel like I'm being robbed with the price for smaller portions and disrespected at the same time. No sense of urgency!
google avatar

Cristina P.

Yelp
Solid pizza. I got the sausage and cheese and enjoyed it. I also purchased a Truly. I would eat here again.
google avatar

Daniel W.

Yelp
They just shrunk pizza to tiny personal pans and charge same amount. Boycott. Would rather pay more than get less. Typical MDW food failures. Used to be good. Won't go back again.
google avatar

Shayla M.

Yelp
Pizza at the airport? Woodgrain pizza sevrves Neapolitan style pizza. Woodgrain is located in the A concourse of the airport. I was thinking the service was going to take a while. However, my pizza was ready in about 5 minutes. The pizza was very flavorful, I did have to let it cool off a bit so that rhe cheese and toppings had a chance to firm up. The price was decent, but I wasn't even close to finishing this pizza by myself. I almost wish the pizza came in two sizes. I would have definitely ordered a smaller one.

Brian B.

Yelp
8.2/10 Great char. Handmade dough. Beautiful sauce. Recommend if in the Chicago airport
google avatar

Candice T O.

Yelp
The staff was super friendly! The order was up very quickly. The dough is freshly hand tossed. The toppings are premium, fresh and the pizza was loaded with them. They did not disappoint! I ordered a kids size with the herb and garlic olive oil base (no marinara) with Italian beef, red onion red peppers asiago and Parmesan cheese. It was GOOD!! The Italian beef was very tender and paired well with the cheeses. I purchased a coconut water, and ended up leaving it on the counter because I wanted to get pictures of the crew and restaurant. Anyway, the crust was perfectly crisp and the toppings were all juicy and flavorful. MDW isn't that big, this is located in concourse A, near gate A7.

Charlie G.

Yelp
Tried this place because everything else in the airport looked awful and had terrible reviews. It was honestly decent pizza and did the job. Better than some I've had at restaurants in the city. The man working by himself was super nice and efficient which was appreciated!
google avatar

Andrea E.

Yelp
I was impressed with how this team of 2 managed an extremely long line. They showed some stress but we're still friendly which you don't see as much anymore. My veggie pizza was delicious. This is not a sit down place. You order your pizza to go and find a place to eat it.
google avatar

Dan K.

Yelp
How often do you get a good pizza in the airport? At Midway?!? Woodgrain delivers quality neapolitan pizza at a reasonable price. Between flights, the friendly and upbeat staff put together two fine pizzas at 8:30 working through what must feel like a never ending line of people. I had low expectations and Woodgrain blew them out of the water. For real, the pizzas were just very good. Not giving sympathy points just because this is an airport restaurant either. Lots of the reviewers were complaining about elements of the pizza which are characteristics of the style of pizza Woodgrain is serving (Neapolitan). They should take their news York style expectations to JFK. Yes, a $17 pour of red wine is robbery and the meat pizza could have used a tad bit more cheese to the edge to keep the toppings from sliding off but this place is legit. The crust has yeasty notes and they definitely did not skimp on the toppings. The Margherita had fresh basil and was delicate. Best food I've ever had at midway. Period.

Shriya S.

Yelp
Continuing my search for my favorite pizza, I came across Woodgrain! Similar to other reviewers, it's not a bad option for neopolitan for Midway, but I've definitely had better overall. I generally prefer pizzas that have more sauce and are crunchier. I ordered a veggie pizza with added hot peppers. If you like crusts that are more chewy and soft, this pizza is for you! Beware if you like to order too many toppings - they will quickly all fall off with the cheese when you go to pick up a slice. The cheese was salty - if I had to reorder, I would definitely go easy on the cheese. Super cool they've got this option to order in the airport, and if you are looking for something hot, it's one of the best/only options here!
google avatar

Debbie F.

Yelp
Pretty good pizza for the airport. It's ready in leads than 10 minutes and tasty! We had the veggie pizza
google avatar

david s.

Yelp
The amount I spent for 2 pizzas at this place was almost the same I paid for my first car payment. Maybe it is inflation or maybe I am old but that is my major complaint. Decent pizza. Decent sauce. Decent cheese. Crust was a little doughy and could of been crisper. I thought the guy who took our order was nice wishing us a happy Easter. Did not buy bottle of water since it costs more than a $5 gallon of gas. Sorry about that last comment but I could not help it. If your dying for pizza than go. If your not dying for pizza I wouldn't say you missing too much for a trip back to the airport.
google avatar

Mulan C.

Yelp
Woodgrain is one of the best places to grab a bite in Midway. Each pizza is freshly made to order. You might think because of that, you would have to wait a while, but they cook surprisingly quick. I only waited 5 minutes or less. The sauce is savory and flavorful and the cheese is stretchy and yummy. The sausage also tastes really good. For a pizza place at the airport, I highly recommend you give it a try!
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
First time trying this pizza place in Midway airport. Soooo good! The pizza is so fresh & hot coming out of the oven. I was surprised how quickly my pizza was ready too. Napolean style pizza with crust that meltbin your mouth. Service is courteous and you can feel good supporting a black owned business! I'll be back for sure!!
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
Midway airport food selection could clog an artery. Nothing healthy in restaurants, not even the salads. So, when I ran into a pizza spot that is black owned, I was hopeful. Disappointed! The pizza was poorly made, the cheese detached from the crust, because it was too heavy for the dough. I would say I enjoyed the crust, but that's the only part I could really eat of a $20 6-slice pizza. Completely dissatisfied with this meal and airport.
google avatar

Brooke A.

Yelp
I had a three hour layover at the Chicago midway airport, and couldn't decide what to eat. I almost got a Chicago dog, but they weren't available at the place next door. I saw someone with a pizza from this place, then I heard someone else dining nearby say, "That pizza looks really good!" I then decided to get an Italian sausage pizza, and I'm so glad I did! For airport food, it was really tasty, so much so that I wasn't even mad at the $20 price. The cashiers were friendly too, even though it was the end of the day.
google avatar

Natosha M.

Yelp
I Was at the Midway Airport and needed something quick to eat. Quick but still healthy. I walked past Woodgrain Pizzeria and literally stopped in my tracks. I would have gotten a pizza but my flight was leaving in just 30 min. I ended up getting a Greek salad that was pretty good. But you want to know the best part.....THEY ARE BLACK OWNED. I walked up and Instantly saw the black girl magic wine but due to my flight leaving so soon I didn't purchase any. Needless to say I was sad because of that lol. The staff was really nice and food didn't take too long to come out. You better believe that I'll be stopping by whenever I have another flight.
google avatar

Nora C.

Yelp
The sriracha bbq chicken pizza was a delightful suprise. It's not the best pizza I've ever had, but it is tasty. I probably would have walked by this place, but it smelled great and I have a several hour delay. I love the fact that it's fresh out of the oven and you can watch them prepare the pizza. Several reviews mentioned that this pizza has a thinner crust - this is true. However, I like slightly chewy thin crust pizza that's light on the sauce. It is a bit pricey, but it would be reasonable for two people that want a small lunch (airport food also costs more).
google avatar

Amy H.

Yelp
They make the pizza right in front of you, so you know it's fresh! I had to wait for my next flight, so I ordered pizza here. Service was friendly and pizza was good.

He S.

Yelp
Went for breakfast. The breakfast wraps are really good and filling for $10. No lines and food was hot
google avatar

Yolie V.

Yelp
Service was a bit short handed so we waited in line to place an order while the girl looked befuddled about why they were missing two pizzas for two orders. Once we placed an order, it wasn't too long before we were gobbling our delicious meal. It was a thin crust pizza with thinly sliced chicken, chunks of bacon, hardly any spinach (could have used more), lots of mozzarella cheese and a sweet, smoky, tangy bbq sauce. Not hot at all, but very yummy. $20.99 for pizza eaten by two. $3.99 for tasty Peach Joe Tea.
google avatar

Steve O.

Yelp
The pizza was very good. The wood fired oven appears to have an automatic cooking system so the pizza is cooked the same every time. The price was airport pricing but not bad for you get. The cooking service was good but the cashier was clueless.
google avatar

Ojus P.

Yelp
Appealing set up with fresh dough getting floured in front of you and placed in a large oven. But flavor was meh. OK option for an airport. 5 Cheese - 3/5. Solid crunchy crust. Basic tomato sauce. Hearty portion of cheese. But something about it doesn't quite work.

Raul J.

Yelp
Don't eat here... At least not at the airport. Horribly overpriced, greasy (dripping), and it took forever to come out (unlike what other reviews say, it took at least 20 minutes, not 5). Despite this, the dough was somehow undercooked and difficult to pull apart despite being pre-sliced. The quality is not worth the price of admission. If you should risk it, at least make sure you have plenty of time to make your flight. Your stomach has been warned.

Jon S.

Yelp
Staff is friendly and sweet. It's not their fault the oven stone is too cold for quality Neapolitan pizza. Soggy, greasy bottom but the top and toppings are decently melted/browned. Everything is made to order right in front of you so you DO get fresh made/cooked pizza. As with most airport stops, the prices are out of whack with reality. These guys are WAAAY high for what you get. But, it's fresh with very friendly service.
google avatar

Karis L.

Yelp
The BEST airport puzza to go!!! I fell in love with this place! The pizza is made right there while you wait and placed in a woodburning oven. Yum!!!! This pizza spot will make any layover worth it! The cashier was hilarious!!! I didn't catch his name but he filled the wait time with laughter. Handsome young fella! Thank me later after you try this pizza
google avatar

Tammy E.

Yelp
Pizza was decent but nothing to write home about. There weren't a ton of options but the girl making the pizzas told the girl behind me she could have olive oil as the base instead of marinara on any of the options on the board. Wish that was posted so I would have known! I probably wouldn't have gotten the Oppa (Greek pizza) had I known that. I wasn't sure I wanted to wait around for a pizza to be cooked so I asked the girl before ordering how long it would take. She rolled her eyes at me and said "like 5 minutes." Did that necessitate an eye roll? Probably not. There were 3-4 females and one male behind the counter but it was such a small space they seemed to be getting in each other's way. For those of us who ordered water the guy had to go to the back to make them and bring them out. They'd be better off just putting a water tank out with smaller cups to avoid this issue. Of course as soon as he would come out with a few waters the next customers would see the waters and ask for some, too. You could tell the guy was frustrated by that so maybe they'll learn to adapt in the future.
google avatar

Trenise L.

Yelp
Had a layover at Chicago airport and this was one on the very few places that was still open. Pizza smelled amazing, but the service was a bit unprofessional. Young lady came out the back room cursing and talking loud to her coworkers. They got a couple orders ahead of me wrong. Burnt 3 peoples orders. Gave another guys order away to someone else. If was very chaotic to say the least. My pizza wasn't very good at all, but at least it wasn't burnt or so I thought until I took a bite and under the crust was a bit on the crispy side. I would have taken it back, but it was closed. I was able to get a couple of bites before having to just toss it out. Really sucks because airport food is not only expensive, but many options after a certain time. I won't recommend this place.
google avatar

Monica A.

Yelp
Walked the WHOLE AIRPORT. Hoping to find Chicago Style Pizza. In the Chicago Midway Airport. ALL of it. (Or most of it anyway) I may have missed it, but boy did I look. There are not very many vegetarian or pescatarian options here. So opted for this place which had a veggie pizza. Right off the bat, it's a generic dough. I'd have hoped for either Chicago deep dish or thin crust. But got a generic dough instead. Meh... The plus was they had several beers available Asked for low cheese and the pizza still came out cheesy. The dough got soggy really quick (by the time I sat down)...since it had so much sauce and peppers. Ended up eating mostly the crust and some of the toppings, the rest- sad to say- was inedible for me- and I can eat rocks (vegetarian or pescatarian rocks that is.. lol- but rocks nonetheless) Thought pizza would be a safe bet in a world of bacon cheeseburgers and all kinds of junk food... For being a major, airport it's mind blowing that restaurants are at about 40% capacity (at most?..enough of that already!!!) and there are slim options to eat here BTW, baking sure comes in handy- paid $8.25 for a "full beer on a cup" (12oz beer), and received about 8oz. SMH...
google avatar

Jasmine P.

Yelp
Yum. I ordered the sausage and peppers pizza and added giardiniera hot peppers. It was delicious and a generous portion for one person so I had leftovers but they were still tasty cold. What was even more interesting was to see a wood fired oven inside the airport. That was pretty cool.
google avatar

Daniel W.

Yelp
Four stars by airport standards, but a three elsewhere. The strangest fail pizza, which was somehow still delicious. Whoever is making their pies isnt leaving enough dough in the center, so they get soggy and fall apart in the middle, leaving you with a kind of pizza mash and then a pizza edge which is more normal. Despite that, the ingredients are high quality, not overly greasy, and carry the day. One of the best options at Midway. Despite that, th

Yelp
I am guessing that this place is new since this terminal (A) was recently renovated. I am hoping that it will get better with time because grabbing a pizza like this is one of my favorite things to do in the airport. This place felt like it was under staffed or the people weren't well trained. A word of warning: this is really not a build-your-own pizza place. You order one their "specialty" pizzas but you can add toppings to that for a price. The choices are pretty good but most people add items, it seems. Probably the downfall for this visit was that there was no one specifically tending the oven. Although the name of the establishment would imply a wood-fired oven, in reality there appeared to be gas flame shooting up from the back of the oven, with the pizzas roaring quickly by. Maybe his system works well when there is a cook, but in their current scenario the pizzas never got rotated. Consequently my pizza (and few others in front me) was burned on one side. Strangely I saw a couple of other pizzas come out under done. Honestly, I did not realize how charred my pizza was on that side (and underneath) until I went to my table and started eating. Now, I really like crusts (Love bread) but I just could eat the crust from half of the pizza. Even with that, I had to go buy some M&M's to get the taste of charcoal out of my mouth before I caught my next flight. I truly hope that this place gets better (or that I caught them with an untrained crew) as they are in a great location and lots of people coming by. Without improvements, I predict that many more people will avoid this place after their first trip there.
google avatar

Linda B.

Yelp
This looked like the best place to get food to go on flight. Friendly staff, quality ingredients and variety of dishes. Mediterranean salad got the spot with plenty of white meat chicken, olives, peppers, feta, spinach and delicious salad dressing. All for $14 and more than enough for a meal. Midway airport has stepped up
google avatar

Yelp
I was in line for 20+ minutes in line to order a margherita pizza. I get to the front, and the worker tells me they are out of the cheese for that pizza. So I ordered a different pizza. Literally two people after me ordered a margherita pizza, AND GOT ONE! I watched them make three while I waited for my pizza. When I asked why I was told I couldn't have one, they said "we told you were we were out of cheese." Magically they got it after I ordered my pizza? I still can't figure out how people behind me was able to order it. By the time I ordered, my husband had gone somewhere else, ordered, received his food, and ate it. The pizza was at best mediocre and not worth the rude service, and the long wait.
google avatar

Jim Y.

Yelp
Best airport pizza ever, definitely better than any at O'Hare or other airport food courts. Pizza is made in front of you to order and wood fired right in front. They had this Mega-something special with awesome amounts of extra bacon. Everything looked good so I ordered what I can't get back home, sausage and peppers in the Big City! Perfect sauce, perfect crust, and huge amounts of sausage and peppers! The Italian Beef was tempting but will have to wait until my next MDW connection. Yes! I ate the whole thing myself!
google avatar

Hydration S.

Yelp
Just okay. The margarita pizza was nothing special, but not bad. I'm not sure if it was supposed to come with tomatoes or not, but it did not have any on it. Also it was pretty expensive, like $18 for a personal pizza. Overall, not a bad choice but I would recommend getting something else.
google avatar

Helena M.

Yelp
I enjoyed my pizza here! The manager (I think) was very friendly but she did not have a hair net on or mask which was a bit concerning for me. The pizza itself was delicious. I got the five cheese and would definitely go again. The pizza itself was not Chicago deep dish style but it was still pretty thick and delicious. The price was around $13 for a single pizza which to me was reasonable considering that they are located at the airport.

Yelp
Awesomeness place fast Service and pizza was a blast I dont understand the need to write A story

LaShawne T.

Yelp
Needed lunch in Chicago Midway airport and found this gem! The pizza crust was thin and light. The cheese and the sauce had a perfect balance with the toppings. There were no overwhelming flavors or grease dripping down your arm with this pizza it was just perfectly constructed in a cute little pizza oven. There was a multiplicity of ingredients that you can add to your pizza, along with several specialty pizza selections. They cover from vegan to carnivores. They have a vast drink selection which includes some alcoholic beverages beer and wine. No complaints whatsoever would love to have one of these in my home state! So when you're in Chicago midway in the A gates go look out for this wonderful dining experience. Just an FYI you'll have to fight for a seat in the food court. Beware of the manager she clearly has some anger issues. I was in a line of about 15 people and every third person she had the eye roll thing and talking back. Could've been just a bad day for her. I hope next time I swing through there she's in a better mood.

Yelp
Best airport food option! Pizza was very good, entire family was happy. Quick service!

Yelp
At the airport and on the hunt for vegetarian options. I came across a few place but being a veg at the airport can be tricky. Looking at the directory, I saw the Woodgrain offered vegan options but when arrived, that wasn't the case. I was over my searched so I settled on the garden vegetable pizza with olive no mushrooms. Due to the watery consistency of the sauce, the center of the pizza fell apart. I had to roll the pizza in order to eat it. The airport prices are twice as much as the online menu but hey, to be expected at the airport. My total came to $19. Overall, it was decent, good portion and could easily be shared. Maybe I had high expectations being in Chicago.
google avatar

Wayne W.

Yelp
For airport pizza I will say it was pretty solid. Staff was friendly and fast and was able to get a fresh made pizza cranked out in a short amount of time. The issue I have is the price, I mean you know you are going to get gouged in an airport when it comes to food but I got a pizza and added chicken and it was $20+ it was good but not something I would pay normally more than $15 for and when you tack on the airport markup it still is a bit steep. All and all good but the price is what really threw me off from a 5 star review.
google avatar

Alyse H.

Yelp
In a sea of subpar overpriced options at the Midway airport, Woodgrain stands out as a delicious, reasonably priced option. The pizzas are large enough that it could easily feed 2 with light appetites, or one with a gargantuan appetite. I opted for the sausage and peppers pizza. It was covered in red pepper and chunks of sausage. The quality and flavor of ingredients is high and it is a relatively quick option if you're cutting it close to your boarding time. There were many airport employees in line too, which shows that this place is tasty and priced well.

Yelp
Honestly one of the better food options at MDW. Came over from terminal B hoping for better food options & the pizza smelled good so we went here. The sriracha bbq chicken was not too bad for airport pizza. Definitely had the MOD pizza vibes were they prepare it in front of you & then they cook it in a big "woodfire" oven. It was just a smidge on the burnt side otherwise no complaints.

Yelp
Had the 5-cheese pizza with half chicken and half sausage. The pizza is ok for an airport location. The gluten free crust was good, I didn't experience the soggy crust others spoke of. Just know they charge full price for half toppings. I recommend having the person taking the order mention that it is full price per topping regardless if it covers a portion of the pie or the entire pie.

Yelp
I ordered pizza and wanted to get a salad and glass of wine. Both were $13 or more so I had to choose. Definitely airport pricing. Food was good. A little confusing on where you order and staff were busy talking to each other so you have to wait a while. Pizza was good but not $15 good.

Yelp
What a pleasant surprise! Airport food isn't usually my thing but sometimes you just have to throw caution to the wind. Once I settled on pizza, I was faced with choosing between three different selections in Terminal A. Based on the horrible reviews for Pizza Vino and the not-so-great reviews for the other place, I chose Woodgrain and I'm so glad I did. The staff were friendly, enthusiastic, and confident in their ability to make a great thin crust pie. I ordered the meat lovers, it was cooked perfectly, and absolutely hit the spot! This was the best choice I've made at an airport in a long, long time.
