Phoenix’s 10 Best Breweries | Eater Phoenix

"Once anchored by a taproom the size of a living room, Wren House has won a cult following. It has now expanded to three locations (with a fourth outpost coming), including a beer hall in Ahwatukee specializing in European beers, chiefly German and Czech lagers. Its staple lager, Valley Beer, can be enjoyed at many top restaurants around town and reflects what Wren House does: make technically impressive beers. Even better for beerheads: Wren House can execute the simple styles while listing geeky nuances like hop varieties so fans can track changes with new iterations. Come for lesser-known styles, like altbier and dark mild. Head brewer Preston Thoeny flexes his creativity with projects like a fall pie series and Las Frescas (fruited sours)." - Chris Malloy

Bars and Nightlife in Phoenix

"Located in a restored 1920s house, Wren House Brewing Company has some of the best locally crafted beers in the Valley. The beer selection ranges from lagers to IPAs to German-style beers. Inside, it still feels like a home. There are no TVs but plenty of places to sit and chat with friends." - MATADOR_NETWORK

Wren House Brewing Company - Review - Midtown - Phoenix - The Infatuation

"Exposed industrial piping, large picnic tables, and bearded guys trying to explain what beer is to the bartender must all be part of some brewery handbook. Wren House is a welcome change from that standard. In the Green Gables neighborhood in Midtown, the taproom was once a 1920s bungalow and is a perfect place to stop by for one beer and then forget what time it is four hours later. Their beer is exceptional, and they’re constantly incorporating local flavors, like Sinagua malt, Arizona wheat, and local citrus. Some nights you’ll find local food trucks out front, or you can head over to Pa’la just down the street for wood-fired Mediterranean food." - Joanna Boyle

A 1920s bungalow brewery turning out award-winning lagers and IPAs. Medaled at the Great American Beer Festival, it’s beloved by local critics for seasonals with a Sonoran sensibility. Settle in for a pint and neighborhood vibes.

Google
This brewery is honestly the best in AZ in my opinion! All their beers are super clean, fresh, and packed with flavor. The staff are really nice, and there’s a bunch of local folks hanging around at the bar 😎 I was just visiting Arizona and always wanted to check this place out. I had no idea they had a cat! And not just any cat, this cat is totally cool 😸 I even bought their poster with the cat on it! The best souvenir I’ve found in AZ! Definitely coming back for the beer and that awesome cat! 😻💕🍻

Google
Quaint little brewery in the city. From the outside the place looks unassuming but they truly have some of the best IPAs I’ve had in the Phoenix area. Absolutely worth a visit!

Google
This place is great. The staff is very nice and informative of the beers available and where it comes from. Their spellbinder is their staple but their sours and barrel Aged stuff is nothing to snuff at nor avoid. Their son of frakenwally and pecan thief is very delicious and heavy. Their sours are also very good along with Uranus. They have a good breadth of variety of beers you can try and like. Their outdoor patio is a nice touch along with the indoor decor being a very casual hangout brewery kind of place. It's a very unassuming place but you'll be very surprised at how good the beer is.

Best beer around. Nice chill location and good relaxing vibes. Nice to be on the right side of the mountain!

Google
Great catalog of craft beers. A bit crowded, but keeping it cool and a great atmosphere. Great beers to share and have conversations.

Google
Best Brewery in Arizona and one of the best in America 🔥They absolutely crush it with their lagers, and hazy IPAs 🤯 Can’t believe I have not given these guys a review before. If you ever get a chance to try their La Clara Especial Mexican lager aged in Sotol barrels it is absolutely INCREDIBLE🤯 Friendly bartenders and great service🍻Their stouts are 🔥 Everything they brew is Amazing. Small place with no TVs but everytime I go there I have an awesome memorable conversation🍻Must visit if in Phoenix 5/5stars🍻

The Old Man of the Mountain bourbon barrel blend was truly fantastic. We also had great service and conversation with the staff. We will definitely make this a stop every trip to the Phoenix area!

Google
Came here solo early on a Thursday evening on a work trip, saw this place was highly recommended on Reddit. Incredible beer, really great bartender, adorable cat, honestly just great vibes. They will do 5oz pours of most things on the menu so you can try a lot (without being annoying and asking for free samples)! If I lived in Phoenix, I’d be here all the time.

Yelp
We ended up staying at a great bnb just down the road from here, and found Wren House after browsing around a list of breweries in the area. Sadly there aren't many. It made our decision pretty simple. And I'm happy that it did, because the beer here ended up being really really good. I was shocked at how quiet it was at around 8pm on a Saturday. There were a few folks inside, but after two drinks we were the only ones left. Oh well! More beer for us! There's quite a bit of seating inside, high tops, tables, stools, bar top. It's a lot of space. There's also a room near the front with a couple of small tables that's quieter than the main tasting room. That's where we chose to enjoy our drinks! I wish I could remember exactly what I got. I was in town for the Bears game, though, so I wasn't exactly what you would call "sober" by the time we arrived. But I know it was super tasty, and that the guy serving the beers was nice and very knowledgeable about their offerings. They have a lot of cans in addition to everything on tap, so be sure to check their menu out online if nothing grabs your attention on the board! We snagged a few glasses and stickers to go as well. I would love to come back the next time we are in Phoenix. This is exactly the type of place I wish we had more of in Vegas.

Yelp
A little disappointed here. The beer looked phenomenal and I was excited to try their selection, BUT there is no non-beer, wine, seltzer, or cider option. My girlfriend has celiac disease. She can't consume beer - she becomes deathly ill. She is biologically unable to consume beer. I've never been to a brewery that didn't offer any other alternative option. I wish Wren House would as their selection (for me) looked incredible. I am a beer lover and get the appeal of "just beer," but this is really limiting to those with dietary restrictions. I'd encourage management to offer at least one other option for those with similar dietary issues (celiac is really common). Until then, this is a place that literally cannot serve us. Until then, I'll drag my girlfriend to other, more accommodating breweries.

Yelp
Always a great place to hang and catch up with friends. Nothing but friendly faces great seating with amazing weather and the best beer. Tried a few samples of some porters and barrel aged stouts but nothing landed well on my pallet but the pinnacle upside down ipa was amazing. My buddy got a porter he loved and we just had a great time. Looking forward to more fresh tastes and times in the future

Yelp
Have I never really reviewed this place?? That seems absurd. We love it here! The beer is very special, and the local taps are so good too. The vibe is friendly and welcoming, the patio is dog-friendly, and the food is terrific. We love the burgers, the chicken sando, and the Fish-Fry Fridays! Cannot beat this place for a lovely afternoon or evening!

Yelp
Staff. Beer. All of it. I enjoyed the reposado sour and my counter part Dow ed the German lager. Patio on a mild heat is pretty great. Watch out for the little male feline -he'll sneak up on you when. You late expect it. Will I be back? Yes.

Yelp
Wren House is one of our favorite breweries in the valley. The location can be a bit tricky to find, but once you have been there once, it is hard to miss. The inside of this place is very low key and laid back. No matter what time we came here, there were always quite a few people drinking beer and having a good time. The indoor is dog friendly and they also have an exclusive outdoor patio. There are benches, shades, and umbrellas on the patio, which could make the dining experience cozy and fun. The people here are huge animal lovers! We even saw the employee bring his cat to the bar! This place does not offer food options inside but they allow you to bring outside food while you drink beer here. They usually have a food truck outside and will deliver the food to you once it is ready. We love the beer options offered here, and we also like the packaging and merch that they have. We can't wait to go back and try their Octoberfest beer soon!

Yelp
I will say that I am a frequent patron to this establishment but, I am always impressed by the attentiveness of the staff to first timers. I watch and listen to conversations that occur at the bar and appreciate the time and descriptions that goes into the varieties available. To add to the experience is the fact that it is family and pet friendly. They even rescued a shelter cat and gave it purpose to watch over those precious hops. This is one of very few places in the valley that encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and engage with like minded individuals about what community is all about. Great conversations and meeting new friends.

Yelp
For the beer I believe you can say, especially based on the Untappd reviews, this is the best beer in the entire Phoenix area. The place itself is small and cozy. Indoor and outdoor areas and parking is easy in the private lot. No flights here but the 5oz pours work fine. Only two at a time maximum which is no big deal either since the place is small. No food but given the quality of the beer, plan your day to make a visit here happen. Service was great. A little slow at times with people coming and going to either stay for a drink here or just to pick up cans. Depending on the moment, a one-man show can get overwhelmed.
google avatar

Yelp
This was a neat brewery to have tried out! They had a good selection of beer options to choose from - IPAs, ales, sours, etc. The staff is great and super friendly. It's in a smaller, quaint home-style building. There's an outside patio area and multiple inside areas to sit. Definitely give them a try!
google avatar

Yelp
The number one brewery in Arizona for hazy IPA'S ! Great spot chill out and beat the heat. Easy drinkers too.
google avatar

Josh G.

Yelp
This spot is right next to a couple good dining options. The prices of drinks were great, service was also very quick. There's enough seating, and it's a pretty relaxed atmosphere. Parking isn't too bad either, so I'd recommend this place for anyone looking for a quick drink.
google avatar

Correy E.

Yelp
This place is awesome! I'm from Georgia and I was forewarned about the killer beer selection. It did not disappoint! The service was great and ambiance was cool. I would definitely recommend this place to craft beer drinkers!

Yelp
Wren House Brewing was a brewery Steven and I got to try lately and overall it was a pretty solid experience. Prone to getting tired of fruited sours and IPA's we got the Sharlot Pilsner. This is a German style pilsner that's a nice, easy beer to drink. Crushable or easy to drink more than one this refreshing beer is a perfect match for outdoor dining on dry, hot sunny days of course the fact that it's in Arizona may have something to do with it. Flavor features to expect from this beer is bready and yeasty flavors with some lemon thrown in. This pilsner is very crisp which adds to the cooling factor while being under the shade in those hot, sunny days.

Rich T.

Yelp
This place has a cozy environment and great beers. Although make sure you know EXACTLY what you want because apparently asking for a sample of a beer is highly looked down upon. I've never had issues at all the numerous breweries anywhere that I've visited for wanting to try a sample before getting a full pour. After receiving that attitude...we finish our beers, closed our tab and went elsewhere.
google avatar

Yelp
Great beer. I will return when in town. Hazy IPAs were excellent. Small space but great beer

Yelp
Came here on a super slow Monday after another place was closing. A bit of a weird location but we were happy to find the parking lot spaces. Kind of a sketchy location so if you didn't find parking, I would probably Uber. Maybe it's just because I'm not local so maybe it's OK? The person working at the bar seemed incredibly bothered by us being there. She was nice enough with greetings but anytime I asked a question she was like yeah I like that one it's like complex and stuff. She didn't seem to really know much about any of the beers or seem interested in talking to us about them. The beer themselves were pretty appropriately priced and good. I liked the coffee stout the best of the two I had. I asked her if it was a darker stout, and she was like no super light. Haha Ummm yeah it was definitely not super light. But it was super delicious. I wish I knew some of the flavors in the Porter but she didn't tell me any. I could look it up later for sure. But it was quite delicious nonetheless. The space is really cozy with nice lighting. Excellent tables for groups or pairs.

Yelp
No food from what I saw. The Ambiance was really cool to me. My Sister said it was dewey. It gave me Pirate ship vibes lol. The beers were absolutely off the hook. Loved seeing so many unique styles. You can tell these brewers have passion. The Riwaka Hazy was so good. I mean 10/10. Loved how it stayed true to the NE Hazy style. So good I took a Crowler to go. My Sister had the sour and loved it. Can't wait to come back and hopefully they have an event !
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
When in town we always stop by Wren House. They are brewery royalty in Arizona. Love the hazy beers. They always something new to try when we stop in.
google avatar

Kimi S.

Yelp
Went for the 8th Anniversary celebration. It was HOT but the hardcore fans prevailed. Tried their special release, Blue Quad Roller Skates. Yummm. Their beers are special, tasty, worth it! You'll find something you like.
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
This brewery is one of the best in Phoenix (if not THE best). I have been several times and the space is comfortable, unassuming, and cool. Plenty of seating options from tables to high tops to bar. Bartenders are friendly and helpful. I can't forget to mention the resident kitty cat, Gravy! Parking is easy and on site. The beer is incredible. There is truly something for everyone. We had IPA, stout, sour, and pilsner lovers in our group. Each of us found several beers we loved. Great merch too. The brand is well designed and applied beautifully to shirts, hats, glassware. Support your local brewers!
google avatar

Yelp
Super cute place. Chill vibes. Locals it seemed, except me, but I still felt welcomed! Friendly bartender said, "Cheers!" to each person he handed a beer! The BBQ food truck outside was delicious!!! Seems they have trivia on Wednesdays and give prizes out. I didn't play, but the guy hosting it was clever and funny. Oh, a cat lives there and apparently runs the place, so don't mind it hopping up and strolling along the bar! Guy next to me warned me it was temperamental.
google avatar

Julie D.

Yelp
Fun little brewery with a smaller selection of beers. I am not a beer fan and can usually get a cider, or if I'm lucky a wine. Here, not at all. My friends all had a glass of beer while I enjoyed the experience. We were lucky to Find a table back in a room where it wasn't so loud, otherwise there was only two tables for two open. Busy place for a Monday night. My friends liked their beers. Cute little place.
google avatar

Carri N.

Yelp
Great neighborhood brewery! I can't believe this place hasn't outgrown its space! Great variety selection of beers and staff was helpful to make an original mixology of theirs with a couple brews for me! (Lady Banks and Valley Beer)
google avatar

Jodi H.

Yelp
Wish they had just a little more seating options inside. They have an abnormally large table in bar area which doesn't seem to serve a purpose other than take up space where smaller tables would fit more people and groups. Beer and service were good though.
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
Great beer, from both draft and cooler. Locals and drop ins are welcomed. Small space, but well utilized. Outdoor area when it's warm. Dog friendly!!
google avatar

Isaac S.

Yelp
Amazing brewery in Phoenix, conveniently close to the airport too! The back patio is great. Even when it's stinking hot. The lagers are out of this world and they make hazy ipas with the best. Great service at the bar with a simple ordering station. And a chill atmosphere to get work done or have a business discussion over a beer.
google avatar

Ali A.

Yelp
Nice ambiance. Music isn't too loud. Beer is solid. However, there's a cat and I'm quite allergic. I hope the establishment ditches the cat. Otherwise, I'll have to stay away, alas.
google avatar

EM M.

Yelp
Great service, staff, and beer selection. Pros-indoor and outdoor sitting areas, dog-friendly Cons- limited parking
google avatar

Michael J.

Yelp
Locally operated, brewed & GABF award winning brews! Occasional food vendors visit, walk up service, dog friendly back patio & more. Best spot to hit pre or plop at airport run with family :). Situated in a historic home, the vibes are cozy warm and inviting. Cheers!

Yelp
I always like to check out local breweries when I travel and I always ask friends which are the best ones to check out. Wren house came highly recommended and they didn't disappoint. It's an unassuming little building in a strip mall (I believe it use to be a house, hence the name?). But don't judge a book by its cover! The inside is beautifully redone, clean and airy; there's also a great back patio. There are around 19 beers on tap and some selections available to go in cans, bottles or crowlers. The beer was fantastic and we tried a variety of styles, each one different from the next. The service from our beer tenders was stellar and they were very knowledgeable about their beer and beer in general. Definitely a top pick when visiting Phoenix.

Yelp
The beer quality is probably the best in Phoenix. One of my favorite beers I have had was the Wally Oop? The bartenders have always been kinda jerks.... But it is getting out of hand. I go on a brewery trip every quarter with Friends. Portland, Seattle, San Diego, Austin, Asheville, NC, Chattanooga, Charleston etc. I have probably been to 200 different breweries, my buddy has had over 2300 unique beers. We have been to a lot of spots... I say this because the "experience" here is pretty unique.... In a bad way! this place employees the rudest people. They had like 5 IPAs the other weekend. Went to the counter very friendly and said "I had the Wally opp, it was awesome - anything close to that you recommend? What are the flavor profiles. - the dude looked me in the eye and said "I Donno man. It's an IPA. I don't know what you want me to tell you" Ok thanks. Hey can I try a sip of these two IPAs? He said no. You can buy one and if you don't like it... order a different one next time. I laughed cuz I thought he was being playful n joking. He wasn't. I'm not gonna be a Karen and cause a scene... but my god this place has some real Gems for staff. It's bizarre how rude they are. I have went to breweries all over the world. Getting a taste is PRETTY COMMON. Especially when I ask you. Hey, what are the flavor profiles for these IPAs? Anything you recommend? I used to go here monthly. But I'm just so sick of the attitude n BS. They have always been a little "off" but now they are new level rude. And it's not just one person. It's the whole staff! I haven't been here since that day. The beer is fine. I live in Phoenix... it's not a brewery town. This is the best option for "beer", but it's not that good to be served by disrespectful...
google avatar

Rachael P.

Yelp
Absolutely obsessed!! Cutest little spot, fantastic beer and people. Wish I could have spent my entire vaca here. And of course Gravy (iykyk) is the bonus.
google avatar

Steve C.

Yelp
Great brewery. Fun bar. Laidback and just a nice vibe there. They bring in food trucks for food. That'll be hit or miss, but at least the beer is always going to be good stuff. Also the cold case is stocked well. Walked out with a Big Cactus Stout and was beyond happy with it. Cheers!
google avatar

Allison S.

Yelp
We LOVED this brewery. We planned a trip to Phoenix for a wedding and I had researched breweries - this was a top recommendation and did not disappoint. It is a smaller tap room which we loved because the vibe was spot on! The bartenders were great and knowledgeable and we sat next to locals which made our time there even sweeter. The beer was fantastic - they had a variety of brews. You're likely to find one beer you like! If we ever go back to Phoenix again this will be our first stop from the airport!
google avatar

Keith M.

Yelp
In my opinion, Wren House is in the top three breweries in Arizona. The cool old building is a pleasant drinking environment. The only negative is that sometimes parking is an issue. No food here, which is fine with me. When they have new beer releases, you better get there soon and try it because they often sell out quickly. If you're into IPAs, they have the best in Arizona. Birthday Boy Wally may have been the best IPA that I've ever had. Cheers!
google avatar

Yasmin T.

Yelp
A great brewery! A small place inside but quite a bit of outside seating as well. Tried the caramel apple sour and it was a 10/10. They have an extensive beer list and surely something for everyone. Bartenders were very knowledgeable and helpful!
google avatar

Armando P.

Yelp
First time here and it had an awesome environment. A not small but with our luck, we got a table right away! The fest bier was awesome and the esp bier was also tasty. Look forward on coming back!
google avatar

Tod M.

Yelp
Libby speaks up about the awesomeness of the libations offered at Wren. It's a lazy night to create and enjoy the vibe.
google avatar

Lorena G.

Yelp
One of our favorite reveries in Phoenix! So glad they are open again and not requesting reservations. These guys can brew, well, that is actually an understatement. They have beer for everyone, light weights, middle of the road, stouts, you name it. It's always a blast! Great crowd, great beer slingers and can't beat that American flag hanging in the tap room!
google avatar

Kyla B.

Yelp
Awesome spot and really really good beer. Stopped by before a flight home and wish we could have spent more time there. Can bring in your own food.
google avatar

Michelle N.

Yelp
This is a great place to get some great brews! I didn't stay in-house, but got crowlers and a 4 pack to go. Everyone was so nice and really on top of making sure everyone got their favorite! I'll be back!
google avatar

Tom G.

Yelp
No food options here, but who needs food when you have fantastic beer like this!! The service and ambience are great. A wonderful craft beer destination set in an old house. The beers are amazing, and plenty to choose from!! A definite must try whether you live here or just visiting!!
google avatar

Tracy H.

Yelp
I'm slightly obsessed with Wren House and I haven't even tried the beer! Fortunately, my husband has and quite enjoys it. We first heard of Wren House while picking up some local meat at Arcadia Meat Market and I was enamored with the burrowing owl beer known as U-9. As a biologist and passionate bird lady, this beer makes my heart happy. Kudos to Wren House for collaborating with Audubon and Wild at Heart to bring awareness of the plight of Phoenix's native land-dwelling owls (while delivering tasty beer). Because of COVID-19 the tasting room is currently closed; however, you can place an order online for super speedy curbside pickup. Simply call or text and your order will be placed in your vehicle in no time! There is also a delivery option if you're able to schedule in advance. We definitely look forward to the reopening of the tasting room to support this local brewer. I highly recommend supporting a small, locally owned business that cares about raising awareness of important issues. The only thing that would make Wren House better is including some gluten-free (or gluten-reduced options) so I can actually drink the beer myself! But for now, I'll take all the cactus wren gear I can and admire the cute U-9 can.
google avatar

Jorja L.

Yelp
Every time I come to Phoenix, Wren House is my first stop. Literally. I take an Uber form the airport to the brewery (which is only a few miles away). WH has a great offering of beers, including the house IPA, Spellbinder. Their IPAs are wonderful, as well as their stouts and, well, anything else on the menu. Plenty of seating inside and outside, and if you're lucky, Gravy the cat will come hang with you for a drink or two.
google avatar

Jordon H.

Yelp
I would leave a 4.5 star if I could (always room for improvement). Josi (spelling) the bartender, was very kind and very accommodating. Good beer, great atmosphere. Patio out back is a great area for bigger gatherings and dogs .
google avatar

Stephanie F.

Yelp
My sister and her boyfriend, who are brew hounds, loved this place. Their review would've been a 5-star I'm sure. My mom was with us, and they didn't have any wine. Just a few smaller individual bottles kept in the fridge for those non-beer drinkers would be nice. It's a small place in downtown Phoenix and an easy stop after picking visitors up from the airport who need a good beer.
google avatar

Eddie C.

Yelp
I kept seeing this place topping the list of best breweries in Phoenix. I thought it was probably overrated. However, once I tried their beer I knew it wasn't bullshit. This place has great beer. So good I had to go on back to back days. I love my dark beers, sours, and the occasional lager. This place probably had the best sour I've ever had. It was their Las Frescas with Blackberry and Lavender. Their Easier Said and Valley Beer were fantastic too. I also enjoyed their patio. It was a nice place to just relax and enjoy great beer. The only thing that would've taken it to another level would've been some food. That sour would've paired great with some mariscos. Anyway, this place deserves the hype it gets. I can't wait to go back to Phoenix in a few months.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
Wren House makes some awesome beers and, as I recently found out, is a nice place to hang out for a while with a draft beer (or two). Wren House makes several beers that I enjoy, like Spellbinder and Wrenovation, which you'll find sold in restaurants and shops around the Valley. But the best part about coming here in person is getting to try all the other beers that aren't as common. I really enjoyed trying a few options and noticed some people got a flight, which is a great idea. Come here, try some beers, maybe take a four-pack to go, and don't miss the taco truck if they're outside!
