The Best Holiday Gifts From NYC Restaurants

"The Xian Famous Foods Cookbook signed by Jason Wang, $28 While we all checked Instagram incessantly this year, the owner of this iconic western Chinese restaurant wrote a cookbook. Think of buying it as a way to unlock Xi’an Famous Foods at home, especially while some of the restaurant’s locations remain closed. This book is full of recipes for dishes we love (like the spicy, hand-ripped biang-biang noodles and the famous burger) as well as in-depth stories behind each one and personal stories from the owner about Xi’an’s 15 years of making all of our lives better." - hannah albertine

Xi’an Famous Foods 西安名吃 Review - Flushing - New York - The Infatuation

"The original Xi’an Famous Foods opened in a food stall in 2005 in the Golden Shopping Mall in Flushing, serving excellent western Chinese noodles and soups. While that stall (and mall) has since closed, you can still find Xi’an Famous Foods’ spicy, satisfying Chinese dishes all around the city (including at their Flushing location on Main Street and in Woodside not too far away). Get the spicy, cumin lamb hand-ripped biang-biang noodles. The noodles are wide, chewy, and coated in a spicy vinegar-soy sauce. It’s one of our favorite things to eat anywhere in the city, and it costs less than $10. Otherwise, add on a cucumber salad and a spicy lamb or a pork burger served in a thin, warm bun. If you’re vegan or vegetarian, know that the liang pi cold skin noodles are just as delicious as the meaty options. Xi’an’s Flushing location is currently open for takeout, delivery, and covered outdoor dining in their backyard. Stop by from Monday to Saturday for lunch or dinner." - Hannah Albertine

NYC Noodle Chain Xi’an Famous Foods Reopens Three Locations This Week - Eater NY

"New York City’s popular hand-pulled noodle chain Xi’an Famous Foods will reopen five of its stores over the next two weeks, CEO Jason Wang tells Time Out. The company’s original restaurant in Flushing will reopen for takeout orders of its hand-pulled noodles this Friday, as will its Upper East Side storefront on East 78th Street. Looking ahead, Xi’an Famous Foods plans to reopen stores in the West Village and Downtown Brooklyn next week, as well. The company’s Woodside outpost — which is attached to the kitchen where it makes its chile oil and meal kits — previously reopened on July 10, according to an announcement on the restaurant’s website. Orders at all of the reopened locations are being limited to pre-order pick-up, and none of the stores will accept cash, Time Out reports." - Luke Fortney

Google
Xi'an Famous Foods is a popular chain of Chinese quick service food, serving up hand pulled noodles and a variety of spicy dishes. The service was efficient and fast, with multiple self ordering kiosks available. There was many customizations available for the meals, as you are able to customize the spice level and any additional toppings. We got a variety of dishes, but tried the pork hand pulled noodles and the lamb hand pulled noodles. Compared to other locations, this one sort of fell flat, but that could be because we lowered the spice level and had less oil. The noodles were nice and bouncy, with the chewy texture, but did feel a bit dry. There wasn't much flavor beyond the spice, and the pork was also a bit dry as well. The portion and price were good, however we'd have to try other things on the menu to see how the flavor is.

We ordered the A1 and N1 to share. While the flavor was good and refreshing, I’ve had better Liang pi at other restaurants so I wouldn’t say it’s the best. If you’re craving cold noodles and want a restaurant with seating and air conditioning, I would recommend considering this restaurant. They have refreshing drinks such as Hibiscus, Chrysanthemum, and Jasmine tea for 2.95 plus tax also. The location is inside the Tangram mall, so you have many food, drink, and dessert options!

Good food and I really appreciate how spicy they make it! Lots of good options at a pretty reasonable price too. The cucumber salad was especially delicious!

If you're craving something spicy, just Google “Xi’an Famous Foods”—there are many branches in New York. The signature sign reads “西安名吃” (Xi’an Famous Foods). The restaurant mainly serves Xi’an-style cuisine, featuring hand-pulled noodles, roujiamo and liangpi. You can choose the level of spiciness based on your preference. The owner recommends going for the spicy option 😋 The chili oil is a secret house-made blend of spices that adds a rich and delicious flavor to the food. The hand-pulled noodles are chewy and full of texture. The savory sauce and chili oil coat the noodles, releasing an irresistible aroma!

Google
The service was fast, lots of seating. I got the hand pulled spicy cumin lamb noodles and it was so good, the lamb was really flavorful the noodles were chewy and it was all really spicy. The meal was nice and filling. Lots of seating available.

Google
While I'm sure there are better reservations of the sort that require a reservation and/or a jacket, outside that echelon, this is the best food in New York City. Bold claim, I know. But when I want to show visitors a shining star of New York cuisine that doesn't necessarily have a reputational wake outside the city, this is where I take them. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, but the hand-torn noodles with either lamb or beef are an ideal entry point to the menu.

Amber RL

Google
Fast service with the best hand-pulled noodles I’ve ever had. The flavor of their chili oil can’t be beat. There’s limited seating but strangers seem to sit together and enjoy their food just fine.

Google
I really loved this place!!! A friend recommended it to me and stated that it was some of the best hand pulled noodles in NYC. The spicy cumin lamb noodles were her favorite, so I gave it a try. The SAUCE!!!! So good. I loved the cumin flavoring and the strong spices going on. It's clear that the creator of the recipe (Jason Wang) valued the flavor in the spicy goodness. I got these mild and it was still packed with flavor. A slight vinegar flavor and tons of savory tones going on from the lamb. Everything just paired perfectly. My only gripe about this place: the paper plates... Not sure if this is my fault for not mixing the noodles immediately when I received the food(?) - but just an FYI to anyone who is dining in. Look out for paper plate bits!

Yelp
When looking for food options around Tangram, I stumbled upon this restaurant. You order at a kiosk and grab your food from the counter after. I got the Spicy Cumin Lamb Noodles and the Pork Jia Zhang Hand Ripped Noodles. I preferred the Jia Zhang noodles a bit more, but both were absolutely delish and affordable for the amount of food you get! I got the mild and it wasn't very spicy at all, which I enjoyed. If you like spice, this is the place for you. Note, bring a drink with you because they do not give out tap water if you dine in. You'll have to buy your own drink!

Yelp
You don't really think of noodle soup when it comes to @xianfoods - in fact, for me, I don't often consider eating here because 85% of their items are spicy. I wish they had more non option items. . I've always liked their noodles, love how they are thick and chewy and made right before your eyes (at least in this location since there is an open kitchen view). At times it doesn't look like a lot but it's really a lot. I couldn't finish it. I ate most of it. If I didn't have a movie to catch afterwards, I would have taken the rest to go. The broth was so flavorful. . The pork was very tender and I thought it would have been dry, but it wasn't dry at all. It was soaked in the sauce it stewed in. . I do wish they had an extra veggie often. They have the option of you want to omit an item but no option to have more of an item. I would have loved some more cabbage and cilantro. . I like the space they have inside @tangramnyc - it's spacious, bright and clean. Can't say the same for their old location inside the Flushing Mall (RIP). But if you think about it, Tangram did replace Flushing Mall, so they are in the same location.

Yelp
Excellent food for the price! Service was quick and love the modern ambiance, although the space can get crowded rather quickly. I got the food to go and it was still great. The hand pulled noodles are something else. Lovely pull and texture. Really takes on the spicy sauce well. The shredded pork was excellent as well. Large chunks with lots of flavor, all while staying tender. I also got the spicy soft tofu, which was fantastic. Really takes tofu to another level with the spice and savory notes. Would definitely come back to try more items next time :)

Yelp
Came here on a Tuesday night around 5pm, it was empty and one person working behind the counter. Ordered a Stewed Pork Hand Ripped Noodles on the kiosk to go. I was basically the only customer there. Got my food fairly fast probably within 10mins. I got home and went through my noodles and guess what I found?! A plastic lid under my noodles, this is EXTREMELY disappointing. I was not able to eat my food and had to toss it out. My question is, how did they completely miss a lid when they were making my food?

Yelp
Excellent. You'll pass up other restaurants that look better and maybe they are, but the food here is delicious and served quick. It is piping hot. Definitely get whatever you get with their chili spice.

Yelp
This location is inside Tangram mall and it was spacious and clean. When I arrived it was pretty empty and ordered my lamb burger through the kiosk. The service was quick and friendly. I tried it as soon as I got the burger even though I wasn't too hungry and it was tasty. The lamb weren't too fatty and still moist. I haven't had Xi'an for a long time since they changed their buns, but I'm glad I gave them another shot. The bun is still not the same as it used to be, but it still absorbs all the spicy oil from it.

Yelp
Revisited with my sisters since they hadn't tried the N1 before. It was absolutely delicious - no other words needed!

Yelp
Great pork burger. Really tasty. Good fat bites too. Very flavorful. Loved the $5.50 price.

Yelp
You cannot go wrong with Xi'an Famous Foods!!! I've been here multiple times throughout the years and it never disappoints. I always order the spicy cumin lamb noodles and it's always fresh and tasty. This is a great takeout spot! Even though it is recommended to eat it as soon as possible for best quality I've taken it home before and eaten it for leftovers and it was just as good to me. Simply a perfect food choice for something quick and enticing.

Yelp
Xi'an Famous Food I've had multiple people from different circles recommend me this place, so I had to give it a try. To preface, I'm a huge fan of noodles, but not the biggest fan of spicy foods. I got the Pork "Zha Jiang" Hand-Ripped Noodles (11.75) with the spice level at Regular. I am a sucker for fresh, hand-pulled noodles. In all honesty, the dish wasn't too spicy, but it was very oily. This type of Chinese food is known to be a bit on the oiler side, and I appreciated that my cashier politely asked me if I wanted it to be less oily. The noodle was very chewy and amazing, but I was not the biggest fan of their sauce and meats. I don't usually typically eat this type of Chinese food, but glad I gave it a try super yummy noodles

Yelp
I love Xi'an famous food and have been to many other locations but this place was disappointing. Not sure if they had a bad day but what we had was subpar. We had the lamb burger and the spicy beef noodle soup and it was very disappointing. The soup lacked flavor and was overly sour and the beef was too tough. The other Xi'an I've been to the beef literally melts in your mouth. The noddle was nice and chewy however. The lamb burger also lacked flavor and the lamb taste was overpowering. The bread in the burger also was too hard. Overall very disappointing. Not sure if they had a bad day but don't think I'll return here again.

Yelp
Xi'an Famous Foods is located in Tangram Mall. There is an open kitchen to watch noodles being freshly pulled and long tables for groups. We ordered the Spicy Cumin Lamb Hand-Ripped Noodles (mild). Once the lid is off, you can smell the flavors. The noodles were very fresh and lamb was tender. Xi'an Famous Foods is always packed with flavors.

Yelp
Located conveniently in the heart of Flushing, Xi'an Famous Food is located conveniently inside Tangram Mall. I've had my share of trying their dishes from all their different locations. I actually told myself that I wouldn't order any of the dishes after being disappointed in their other locations. Many times, it usually lacked in flavor and was super dry or under-seasoned. So when I was meeting up with a friend, I decided to give this location a try. Boy, am I glad to have tried it. I ordered "N1 - Spicy Cumin Lamb Hand-Ripped Noodles" as extra spicy, which is a dish I typically order. The noodles were cooked to perfection. It was nice and chewy, and the flavoring was perfect. I was pleasantly surprised because I was expecting it to be overly dry and under-seasoned. My friend also agreed with me that it was better than the last time she tried as well. Inside, you have condiments such as chili oil, salt, and black vinegar that you can use to adjust the taste to your liking. There are also napkins and utensils located at the tables. The tables also have small hooks conveniently located underneath so that you can place your bags to hang. I came here again after my initial visit about 2 weeks later, and the taste is pretty much the same. Looks like I'll be frequently visiting this specific location after my positive experience.

Yelp
I've eaten at Xi'an famous foods for many years. I was excited to find out about one being in the area so I decided to go and get my usual (spicy cumin lamb noodles). I don't know if they were just having an off day, but there was a strong taste of that tingly beef sauce and hardly had the spicy cumin taste that I'm used to having in other locations. Overall decent but may stick to the NYC locations.
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
Contrary to what they post on the wall about advising against ordering non-spicy, I enjoyed the non-spicy version of my stewed pork hand-pulled noodles. While, it doesn't have that traditional heat and numbness, it was still very flavorful. The highlight is the chewy noodles that were cooked perfectly. The one-star deduction was the unevenness + dryness of the pieces of stewed pork--some pieces were juicy and tender, and some pieces were mega dry. I opted for less cabbage mix, because normally they would load up too much and it would overpower the dish. Overall, I am happy with my dish.

Yelp
This location inside the Tangram mall is super convenient for a quick fix of delicious spicy cumin lamb hand-pulled noodles. Be prepared to sweat it out and have your senses tingled (in a good way)! Order at the register (you can request a lower spice level), stainless steel communal style self-seating available. and don't wear white for fear of getting that sauce on you accidentally! Wish they offered a few more options for cold beverages with ice (there was only a cola and an iced tea option when we went).
google avatar

Yelp
The spicy lamb noodle (N1) and the spicy cucumber are so good! Ordered at the machine and the waiting time is not too long.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is always good here and price and portion is great too. I always get a lamb burger and lamb cumin noodles. Both solid every single time. I liked the way there is plenty of room and seats for people to eat and also it looks and feels very clean here.

Yelp
They opened up a new shop in Flushing. It is located on the first floor of the Tangram shopping mall. It is a clean, modern location that provides the classic dishes that made Xian Famous Foods such a popular restaurant. Mostly self-service similar to the other locations. They have a self order and pay station that is pretty easy to use. It was convenient to order and pay. The prices have been going up from what I remember. They have a good amount of seats available. The food was delicious. We got the Pork Noodle dish, the Spicy Cumin Lamb Noodle and the Pork and Chive Dumplings. I don't like numbing spice so I mostly ate the pork and dumplings. And of course the pulled noodles were fresh and had great texture.

Yelp
BLUF: A New York institution. Unique among Xi'an Famous Foods locations for being open on Sundays. Xi'an Famous Foods (西安名吃) found mainstream success in New York City with notable help from Anthony Bourdain (among others); and grew from a basement stall in the long-gone Golden Mall in Downtown Flushing to several locations across New York City. This new location in Tangram Mall is conveniently open on Sundays, when most other Xi'an Famous locations are closed. Service follows a fast-food model. Order, pay, and wait for your food at the counter; then find your own seating. Food: Good (3.75 of 5) We typically get the "N1" at Xi'an Famous Foods -- the "Spicy Cumin Lamb Hand-Ripped Noodles". The noodles are wide, thick, with a great chew; and are combined with a chili oil coating to make a deliciously addictive, satisfying experience. The lamb is chewy and dry, but flavorful because of the chili oil coating. We recommend the "Regular Spicy" version of this dish. There are less spicy and no spice versions available, but this dish depends heavily on chili oil for flavor. Conversely, we find it difficult to appreciate the Extra Spicy version of this dish, because the heat drowns out the other flavors. Other Dishes We've Tried: - "F3" -- "Mount Qi Pork Hand-Ripped Noodles": $12.75. Same noodles and chili oil from the "N1" but with a slightly sour twist that somehow works, and pork bits that were a bit dry and slightly overcooked. The dish we received was mostly noodles and sauce; it would have been nice to have more protein in the dish. - "Sour Hawberry Tea": $3.25 for a 15-ounce bottle. Well-balanced, flavorful. Other: - Tangram Mall offers free Wi-Fi. - Tangram's restroom facilities are next door.

Yelp
What's not to love about XFF especially when they open a new, clean location in Flushing's newest development? The restaurant is pretty open and spacious with communal bench seating. They also have a large kiosk to order from which makes it a snap. Food here is great just like other locations. Favorites are the hand ripped spicy noodles with beef and their dumplings. Hawthorn tea here is also the perfect complement. Service is good and food comes out fast. Prices are the same as other locations. I like this one because it's the newest and cleanest one to date, thumbs up.

Yelp
I first hand Xi'an Famous foods over a decade ago in the Manhattan location and fell in love with the taste of the "Chinese Hamburger" I later had the pleasure of eating the real thing in Xi'an, China. It tastes pretty close to the real thing ;) This location looks to be very new, and inside the Tangram Shopping center/Mall. Very easy self-service check out and there was plenty of seating on a Friday night around 6pm (we were the only ones in there at the time!) My husband and I shared half of each of the Stewed Pork, and also the Cumin Lamb. Overall, I find the stewed pork to be juicier - but I like the spices of the cumin lamb overall much better. If you've never had a Chinese "hamburger" before, I would recommend you try as is - with the spices as intended. If I had more room I would have tried some of their noodles as well, but we were on a self guided food tour and I had to save space!

Vanessa F.

Yelp
My husband ordered a lamb noodle dish on Sunday 12/15/2024 and before picking up his ordered he confirmed if it was lamb and if it was for him, the staff said "yes." He took it home and realized it was definitely not the lamb dish he ordered but a cold noodle tofu(?) or some type of wheat dish. Since he was already home, he ate it anyway and I took a couple bites. We both ended up with food poisoning that night and I literally threw up 7 times within 12 hours. I will never be returning, how can you serve customers food that has gone bad? Disgusting.

Yelp
Hand pulled Noodles from Haven't had my favorite N2 Spicy & Tingly Beef Noodle ($13.75) in so long and it definitely hit the spot. First time trying the A1 Liang Pi Cold Skin Noodle ($9.25) and it wasn't bad. It was more vinegary and refreshing. Don't know if I'd order it though, I'd have it if I was sharing it with someone cus I prefer the OG N2 Love how big the Tangram location is and there's so many more seats!
google avatar

Richard T.

Yelp
Yummy. This is located in the Tangram Mall. This location has ample seating and very well kept. Bright lighting and clean. Service was good and fast. Noodles came out fresh with the perfect texture. Lamb and chili sauce mixture are very well seasoned. Feel like it's a tad more expensive then other locations but definitely very comfortable.

James Y.

Yelp
I was passing by shopping for a gift nearby in Tangram Mall and was feeling a little hungry from running around. I tried their Cumin Lamb Noodles which was cooked deliciously and served quickly. Noodles were the perfect firmness and the spice and flavor profile was out of this world. I definitely would come back for a quick bite before running in between running my errands in Flushing.

Yerin Elisa K.

Yelp
Came here on a whim after not going to the other Main St, Flushing location for a while (it was disappointing after multiple tries), but I am SO happy I gave it another chance! :) I always get the Spicy Lamb Cumin Hand Ripped Noodles (either dry or in soup) because I personally think it's the best thing on the menu. The reason why I stopped going to the original location is because the noodle quality is inconsistent and sometimes would be too thick or the soup spice level would vary depending on the chef that day (even though I always get medium spicy). But this new place they opened up at Tangram Mall is AMAZING! Literally so good and spot on with the noodle thickness and spice level! The space inside is also clean and nice! I totally recommend trying it out and I'll be back often :)

Yelp
We came to try Xi'an Famous Foods as it recently opened in Flushing and we haven't had this type of noodles in a really long time. I remember eating it once in Manhattan many years ago, so it was nice to see this location open. We ordered the Spicy Cumin Lamb Hand-Ripped Noodles (regular spicy) ($14.25) and Pork "Zha Jiang" Hand-Ripped Noodles (mild spicy) ($12.25). Both were delicious! Noodles were filling, thick, chewy, and bouncy, while packed with flavor. For me, the Zha Jiang was a little salty, but that did not stop me from eating more. And for my bf, he wished the Cumin Lamb had a little more meat. But overall, the staff and the food were great. Will come here again.
google avatar

Rosselin S.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday around 5:15pm. It was relatively empty and we were able to order immediately. One of the workers was mopping with bleach, which gave a very strong smell. I found that odd since it's a food place and you want to smell the food, not bleach... We ordered the pork burger(B1), lamb burger (B2), lamb dumplings(F4), lamb hand ripped noodles(N1) , and beef hand ripped noodles (N2). The dumplings had a generous amount of meat in the middle, but the flavor was lacking. For the lamb and pork burger, the bun texture was good, but it was also lacking flavor had no taste. For the noodle dishes, they were overly astringent and had a very sour taste, which almost made it taste chemically. The meats were also too earthy. It was overbearing and we couldn't eat it. We ended up throwing everything out and leaving. We were disappointed as we were expecting something else.

Yelp
This place is located inside the Tangram Mall. We love Xi'an. We've always love their stuff. Their food never disappoint. Always delicious! Always flavorful! Spicy is a must here. Their food just won't taste good if it's not spicy. Can't complain about the service. Quick and polite. Place looks clean and spacious.

Yelp
B1 pork burger, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu really but def try B1 delicious and very filling.

Yelp
I love the Liang Pi from here. It's the best! I always get the sauce on the side so I can mix it myself to adjust the level of spice. The spicy cucumber salad goes well with the Liang Pi and try their homemade iced teas. Thanks for offering delicious options for vegetarians.

Yelp
Food was delicious! Place lacks seating. The wait was a bit. It looks like fast food but I waited over 10 mins. I started eating my food standing up, then a nice family visiting NY invited me to share their table. I would recommend the food and return.

Zee H.

Yelp
The burger from here is hit or miss, the first one I had was great but another time it was mostly fatty pieces and I'm just not into that, some people might be. The noodles are my go-to. I always get N9 spicy, much better to eat in house but I've still ordered an extra plate to go on occasion.

Beau B.

Yelp
The flavors of the food has gone down while the prices went up. The setup for this place is not kid friendly - our family struggled to enjoy our meal because my son can't safely reach the table and they don't have high chair nor alternatives. N/A for service.

Shlieka T.

Yelp
Ordered the tofu and the spicy cumin lamb noodles. Was not like what I remembered. Barely any sauce, just red oil and the noodles were totally covered in powdered pepper. Spicy is fine, but there was no depth of flavor. Same for the tofu too, just sour and spicy.

Yelp
Last time i came i had the stewed pork hand pulled noodles and they were amazing! This time i came back and had the dumplings and the sandwich. The dumplings were super flavorful and the black vinegar sauce beneath it really combined well with the gamey taste of the lamb. I added extra chili oil and it was super flavorful and savory. The sandwich was the one that caught me by surprise. They put the sandwich in a panini press contraption making it have a super crispy yet still soft bun with the fatty tender stewed pork. It was amazing! I did my own thing and scooped the dumpling sauce (black vinegar and chili oil) onto the stewed pork of the sandwich and it was super good. I highly recommend any of their items especially if you like spicy! The service was good as usual, it's a self service type environment. They call out your number and you get it and choose your seat. The area/tables are not so clean as there are oil residues and whatnot, but this place gets super busy at times! my food took around 10-20 minutes after i ordered on the touch screen pad. It was pretty good! I will definitely return again!

Yelp
This Flushing location forgot to put seitan on my cold noodles. I showed them the first time I noticed it, then they told me it's mixed in. Then I sat down & really looked for the seitan and still wasn't there. So second time I showed them they made up by redoing the noodles and gave me extra seitan too!

Yelp
New location in Tangram Plaza. Clean with upbeat vibe. I ordered (N3) Mount Qi Pork Hand Ripped Noodles(regular spicy) . Delicious and flavorful! Spicy but not overpowering. If your sensitive to spicy food go with "less spicy".
