XiaoLongKan is a chain hot pot restaurant originating from Chengdu, the capital city of central Sichuan Province of China. The overarching theme of XiaoLongKan is inspired by the Three Kingdoms Era of Imperial China. As soon as you open the wooden doors, be prepared to step into another time period. Take a couple of moments to admire the delicate wooden frames with its intricate Hui pattern, the auspicious red lanterns hanging high, and the beautiful paintings referencing the Chinese classic novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It was evident there was a lot of thought put into creating an ethereal ambiance.
Three flavors soup base: Classic spicy beef tallow, tomato, and pork bone. The number three here could represent the three heroes of the kingdom of Shu, ambitious Liu Bei, warrior Guan Yu and relentless Zhang Fei. It was said these three took an oath in the Peach Garden, symbolizing their fraternal loyalty and unity to protect what was most sacred to them. As these three played important roles in the kingdom of Shu, so did this three flavor soup base-setting the core foundation to an impeccable meal.
Combination A, nine grid box filled with spicy beef, ribeye, spam, potato, lotus root, sausage, fish tofu, imitation crab stick, and vermicelli noodle. The number nine can be seen as a symbol for completeness, longevity, and eternity. The beauty of the nine grid box not only lies with its graceful setup but also with its divine quality of ingredients. This meal was truly not complete without this combination.
At end of this experience, I was reminded of the proverb: "Having love, drinking water will fill you up, without love, eating food will leave you hungry." In other words, with love even water can be filling, but without love not even food will make you full. Digressing a little bit from the traditional interpretation, I would argue XiaoLongKan provided service and handled their food with an abundance of love. I tasted it alone just from one sip of the bone broth.
