Xie Bao - Review - Hell's Kitchen - New York - The Infatuation

"Xie Bao in Flushing was one of our Best New Restaurants of 2024. Now, the crab-roe specialist has a casual sit-down storefront in Hell’s Kitchen. The crab roe noodles are just as creamy and comforting, and the crab roe meatballs in a lightly sweet, star anise-laced sauce remain delicious. We do miss the bustle of the original’s Queens food court setting, but the upside to this quieter dining room in Manhattan is that the menu is much more extensive, with seafood boils and reasonably priced lunch specials. Xie Bao is a great option for a reliable, delicious meal in the neighborhood, whether you’re in need of a pre-theater dinner or just a mid-day excuse to escape your desk for half an hour. The three-martini lunch is out, but the three-pound seafood boil lunch is in. Food Rundown Crab Roe Over Noodle Creamy, sweet, nutty, and briny—just as good as they are in Flushing, and still a must. photo credit: Molly Fitzpatrick Sweet And Sour Squirrel Fish Your choice of branzino or red snapper (the branzino’s the better vessel for these flavors) is scored, deep-fried until puffy and golden, and then doused in a thick, tangy sweet and sour sauce. Delicious, yes—and even more impressively, it’s a dish that knows how to strike a pose. photo credit: Molly Fitzpatrick Eel Rice Bowl Tender and lightly gingery. A solid option for a quick, satisfying lunch. Pan-Fried Yellow Croaker Yellow croaker appears on the menu at the Flushing Xie Bao, over rice or noodles, but not like this. The whole fish is shatteringly crisp, but not dry—it’s fatty and flavorful. photo credit: Molly Fitzpatrick Shrimp Seafood Boil There are splashier combinations available, with snow crab, dungeness, or king crab, but even the first option on the menu—with plump and juicy shrimp, mussels, clams, sausage, corn, and potatoes—is a great choice. It’s high in quality and in quantity, and could easily feed three or four. Every seafood boil at Xie Bao invites you to pick your own spice blend: Cajun, Chinese mala, garlic, or “Boom” (all three mixed). Embrace your inner maximalist and go for the Boom, because the heat, zest, and tingle harmonize into something better than the sum of their parts rather than getting muddled. photo credit: Molly Fitzpatrick" - Molly Fitzpatrick

If you love crab roe, this is the place to go. Very authentic Chinese food that soothes your soul. It’s a tiny hole in the wall restaurant so seating is limited. Highly recommend making a reso on the weekend. We came on a weekday night and it was decently packed, glad we made a reso as we have a child with us. Thankfully they sat us at the very front booth so there was plenty of room to store our folded up stroller and the booth seating helped with our busy toddler. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was fantastic. 3/4 dishes we ordered had crab roe in it! Especially love the crab roe on noodle, this is their signature dish. I also recommend the roe on vegetables. The seasonal sweet and sour fish was done really well too. 11/10 will come again!

Love seeing more Jiangsu cuisine in the city!!! Xie Bao specializes in crab roe dishes such as crab roe over rice and crab roe & pork soup dumplings. The menu is super extensive, with our faves being the pan fried buns and crab roe over rice. The Meiling Congee was also super comforting. Worth trying if you’ve never had crab roe over rice or noodle!!

This is a small restaurant. There are two servers but you can never get them unless you wave your hand. There isn't enough air circulation in the restaurant. The food was average depending on the dish. The fish was super dry. It was fry for too long or it was sitting in the refrigerator too long. All the food was all warm. We found hair sticking out on one of the soup dumplings. I just lost my appetite.

Authentic and unique dishes from JiangZhe region (near Shanghai). What a wonderful taste of home cooking and street food from Shanghai — the soup dumplings, moon cake with meat filling, lotus roots stuffed with sticky rice, and of course, the crab meat topping over bokchoy and shiitake mushrooms were all delicious! Can’t wait to come back to try more dishes next time.

We needed to get some authentic Chinese food before leaving NYC, and this place did not disappoint. My friends got two different Crab Roe dishes I was able to try and they were fantastic. In fact, everything I tried was. The noodles were a very nice texture, and all of the soup broths were perfectly seasoned and savory. If you are nearby, don’t miss out on this place.

The best crab noodle, rice and dumplings in NYC. I was so surprised by the generous amount of crab meat and the delicious dishes, which tasted like they were served in a high-end restaurant. The food was even better than expected, and I will definitely be back. This is one of my favorite restaurants in New York.

First time at xie bao manhattan and it was super good. Crab roe noodles and sweet sour ribs were my fave!! The rib meat fell off the bone easily. The jellyfish salad was also delicious and crunchy!

Xie Bao was extremely delicious and had so many unique dishes! My first time trying crab roe over rice and I’ll definitely be back. Also their soup dumplings had the right amount of meat to soup ratio and the skin was really thin. So glad they opened up in Manhattan and saves the trip to flushing!
