The 24 Best Places To Eat Vegan Food In Chicago

"Chicago has plenty of food halls, but XMarket in Uptown is the only exclusively vegan one. The massive space has seven vendors, a coffee shop, a full bar, and tons of tables. And the wide variety of food stalls means there’s something for everybody—from smoky mushroom tacos at El Hongo Magico, to juicy Italian “beef” from Chicago Not Dogs, to savory eggplant “unagi” nigiri from Bloom Sushi. Plus, with a full grocery section, you can also pick up that vegan cheese your neighborhood grocery store never seems to have." - adrian kane, john ringor

Chicago’s Essential Taco Restaurants

"El Hongo Mágico (the magic mushroom) puts a green twist on a few traditional Mexican favorites. Making mushrooms their core ingredient, the team’s ability to balance flavors and textures delivers dishes that resonate with vegans and non-vegans alike. The menu features three tacos, each made with handmade tortillas, and each giving the limelight to a different type of mushroom: cremini, marinated in a smoky blend of chile ancho and guajillo; portobello with peppers and onions; and button mushrooms, prepared with crispy potatoes and chile poblano. The taco flight is an opportunity to sample them all. Pair any of these with their agua de jamaica (hibiscus tea) for a perfect match.  Other interesting items on the menu are mushroom pozole and bean tamales. The team plans to expand its offerings as the eatery gears up for summer.  Find El Hongo Mágico at XMarket, the vegan supermarket in Uptown. Parking is free. Also, keep an eye out for the eatery at pop-up events across the city, or bring vegan tacos to your party with their catering service." - Brenda Storch

And the wide variety of food stalls means there’s something for everyone—from smoky mushroom tacos at El Hongo Magico, to juicy Italian “beef” from Chicago Not Dogs, to savory eggplant “unagi” nigiri from Bloom Sushi. Chicago’s Vegan Food Hall Features Meatless Italian Beef, Fish-Free Sushi, and More - Eater Chicago

"Can Chicago sustain an all-vegan food hall in Uptown? Running any type of food hall is challenging thanks to inflation, consumer spending habits, and profit margins. The owners of XMarket hope that vegans will support the venue, just off DuSable Lake Shore Drive’s Montrose exit. It debuted last week with six restaurants. The food hall is inside XMarket’s vegan grocery store, which the parent company — PlantX — calls the world’s largest vegan store. It opened in summer 2022. The food hall lineup includes Chicago names already known among local vegans. PlantX is a Canadian company that was focused on eCommerce and is now branching into physical stores with locations in Venice, California, and outside of Vancouver." - Ashok Selvam

Google
The food was pretty good but took a while to make. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that apparently they allow dogs and somebody had their dog on the table. I’m allergic and I also generally think it’s kind of gross to allow that in a place that serves food and drink. Overall I’ll definitely be back to try some of the other vendors and go shopping at the bodega. Really nice to see a wide selection of all vegan snacks and frozen stuff. They don’t take cash so bring your card

Fun, tasty vegan options at the food stalls. The shop is too pricey for me, but how nice that everything there is plant based! Happy hour every day at the bar with a great selection.

Best new spot to have opened up in Uptown/Buena Park. Friendly space and a chill vibe. Love the natural lighting during the day to sit-back at the bar, coffee shop or one of the food hall table spaces. Excellent selection of plant-based & vegan foods with a market with additional beverages, snacks, food and frozen goods to choose from. Brought my sister here who was ecstatic to find a variety of plant-based/vegan chocolate bars.

Google
An absolute paradise for any vegans. The staff were all extremely nice, the entire place was clean/spotless, plenty of seating, and I've never seen so much delicious vegan food in one place before. This is a must visit if you're going to Chicago.

Food was much better than expected. Got a pizza, which was good but they either forgot to make it stuffed crust or it's not very stuffed. The sushi is very good. Especially the unagi eggplant (also had the Spicy melon roll) sushi is on par price wise, the presentation was impressive as I wasn't expecting much on that end. Bodega has some nice items that aren't at the nearby target, jewel or aldi. However the prices are marked up a tad too high for me. Environment is very good and chill. They have a bar and a few TVs. It's clean. They could use an extra bus station to put dishes away (real dishes and silverware are given with food).

I got the firecracker shrimp and the California Maki from the Bloom sushi counter, and loved everything so much! I was surprised that the shrimp were vegan! I can’t wait to come back and try all of the other booths. I also really like that there’s bubble tea but I haven’t tried it yet but I’m going to and I’ll leave another review if it’s good

I’ve never been so excited and motivated to leave a Google review. I need to tell the world about this place because it’s awesome. I’ve been a vegetarian for 22 years and moved to Chicago from the southwest last year. I’m surprised I haven’t seen anything like this in Los Angeles. I’m happy that it’s in Chicago because we get a nice variety of comfort food 😋 The grocery store has items that are comparable to what you’d see in a place like Whole Foods, however, it’s amazing to walk into a place knowing that I can eat literally anything being offered. I ordered a taco flight from El Taco Magico. It was fantastic. I’m stoked that this place exists! It’s a little pricy, but having a food hall with 6 vendors in it is amazing. I understand that it’s expensive to have dietary restrictions. Can’t wait to come back after pay day, preferably with a group of friends after having an edible to share stuff from the food hall.

Everything we tried was delicious. Including our cocktails. Everyone we encountered was great. Only downside: we ordered from a few different places so it was a bit of scurrying around to get all our food when it was ready. Thankfully, was not too busy (Mmonday night). Oh, and bonus : Monday nights = Bingo 😊

Yelp
This is actually part of a market. It's a small corner in that market. I ordered the Ube Matcha Boba Tea - it was decent. Nothing fantastic - not too sweet. Colours looked great. Then I ordered the lycee mochi donut and the matcha mochi donut. Honestly didn't enjoy them a lot - they felt like they were a couple days old. And no flavour difference between the two really. But the place is cute and I like the story behind it.

Yelp
Good product. Clean washrooms. Nicely decorated. Extraordinarily slow service. I mean, they couldn't be slower if they tried. But if you have a lot of time on your hands, it's a good place.

Yelp
Came on their grand opening day with their giveaway! Giving 4 stars for one of the best mochi donuts in the city in my opinion even with just glaze as you can really taste the mochi flavor. Tasted their other flavors and they were also tasty. The brown sugar boba was just okay though and the tapioca pearls were clumped together and single pieces were still not that sippable. I wouldn't get it again. Located in the vegan food hall in uptown that just opened!

Yelp
Excellent experience all around my soon-to-be Wife surprised me with 2D and the food was amazing. If y'all want a cute, quick experience - this literally is the perfect place. Great food, excellent service, our waiter was adorable loooove their make up look for the day (3/29/25)

Yelp
I was so excited to check out 2d restaurant at X Market during my trip to Chicago. The decor is super fun and offers a great photo opp. Thankfully, they still had donuts in stock when I arrived. Donuts were moist and very tasty - not too sweet. Great treat!

Yelp
Inside the Xmarket food hall, so mostly everything is vegan. Despite that, you are still able to order lattes with milk. I got a Kyoto matcha latte and Filipino ube latte and both were great. Also got a cool snowman mochi donut.

Yelp
this is our 4th time coming over here, and the service my family and I received today was the worst! We called before coming to make a reservation, but they refused to take it. We drove for 1 hr to get to this place, and we ended up almost not having a table! I had to suggest to the manager, who doesn't want to identify herself to put 2 tables together so we could eat. She has to call the other manager with a pink turban just to get permission. I don't think she deserves to be a manager if she doesn't know how to make a decision on her own and yet be sarcastic about it!

Yelp
When I tried mochi donuts the first time, I was in love, Then second time so disappointing!!! One of the donuts was stale, probably day or 2 old. For over $3 a pop, not acceptable. I'll try somewhere else!
