"This local mini-chain with two branches in Brooklyn and two in Manhattan specializes in Shanghai street fare, with a special emphasis on dumplings and noodles. What that means as far as XLB go is a free hand with invention and variation. Aside from the usual, there’s a black soup dumpling made with medicinal chickens and another with a spicy soup inside. A goofy specialized plastic spoon, pictured, is provided." - Robert Sietsema, Stefanie Tuder, Erika Adams

"The soup dumplings at Yaso Tangbao are so attractive we want to invite them to a movie, pay for their tickets, and laugh whenever they laugh at what they’re watching on screen. They’re perfectly symmetrical with immaculate crimps all around, and the dough is thin but still chewy. You can also get your soup dumplings spicy, which is what you should do. That’s mostly why we come to Yaso Tangbao, but you can also get a half duck or a bowl of springy noodles with chicken, tofu, or extremely flavorful braised beef." - Bryan Kim

We went for a tasty event at this spot, which just opened earlier this year. This event included demonstration on how the soup dumplings were made. The inside was open with ceiling of the first half of the space going all the way to the top of second floor. They had small seating on the first floor by the entrance, just a couple of tables. There is a second floor above the ordering counter and their kitchen. The second floor is where our event was held. They had much more seating here than down the stairs. It was clean and open, not too many tables in this space, allowing enough space to move around. Then the demonstration started. Their chef had everything prepared. The dough for the wrapper and the stuffing. He was making soup dumplings. He took one of the round dough out of the bag, and used wooden roller to form it into a think, round wrapper. The whole process was flawless and smooth, and he was pretty fast! Some people got to try making the dumplings too. For food, we got to try: Pork Dumplings in Sweet & Spicy Sauce, Pan Fried Pork Bao and Chicken Shao Mai, Fish Dumpling in Sweet & Spicy Sauce, Soy Garlic Noodle with Cilantro, Fried Chicken Cutlet, Spicy Pork Soup Dumplings, Spicy Diced Chicken Over Rice, Braised Pork Meatball Over Rice, Sweet & Sour Pork Ribs Over Rice, Spicy Shrimp, and Pan Fried Vegetable Bao. We had a really nice and fun event here, with crazy amount of food. Most of the items had very similar flavoring (sauce) that kind of made them taste the same. Few of them did stood out with unique flavors. The staffs were nice and friendly, and it was very interesting to be able to watch them make the soup dumplings that we later had the opportunity to consume.

I love soup dumplings so I go to Chinatown at least four times in a month and I was so happy to find this place near midtown east! It's not good as Chinatown but Yaso soup dumplings are decent. I also highly recommend pan fried dumplings. The restaurant is very clean and staffs are nice. It's like fast food restaurant of soup dumplings. You can seat anywhere you want, you pay when you order, you don't need to pay tips. I'll visit again when I'm around, and want to grab a quick meal.

Good Shanghainese addition to the midtown area. This place specialises in dumplings but have a good range of rice and noodle dishes too. It’s not table service, but more like a fast food joint where you order at the counter and wait for your number to be called; that’s good for speedy service and if you’re bringing kids (ie, probably not a good date location). The food was really tasty and the layout, while spartan, worked well.

Dumplings were pretty good I had spicy pork soup dumplings, chicken soup dumplings, and spicy pork jiaozi. Ordered at an iPad, which I appreciated. The place seemed extremely overstaffed, more workers than customers. Maybe that's why service was fast and the dining area was so clean. I'll go back whenever I want soup dumplings in midtown.

Had my first dine in experience on its soft open day. Line was a bit long, but moved really quickly. The restaurant seems to have mobile ordering machines set up so in the future the wait would be even shorter. Soup dumplings are freshly made, and served warm. Sweet ribs are delicious and tender too. Saw other people ordered ribs rice, portion looks generous. Upstairs seating is nice and spacious, overlooking traffic and pedestrians of 42nd st. The packaging and serving here is quite unsustainable/ environmental unfriendly. Three people sitting next to me used 8 plastic containers and two paper boxes to share their dishes... it hurts to watch :(

Great spot for fast, relatively cheap, and delicious eats! The bao are all delicious and the soup dumplings hit the spot. Really cute seating upstairs.

Solid option for affordable fast-casual dim sum in the Midtown East. My husband and I often share meatballs and garlic noodles and get an order of pork soup dumplings each.

Been a few times, first time was a disaster as the steamer was broken so no dumplings! Second time I actually got some soup dumpling and it was decent. Skin is thick but the filling inside is quite good. Other tasty items of note are the chicken cutlets, the dry noodles with sweet sour spare ribs and the beef noodle soup has good, albeit generic flavor. Avoid the chili dumplings, tiny portion and below average taste. Canned soy milk is also blah.
