Zabb PuTawn Cobble Hill - Review - Cobble Hill - New York - The Infatuation

"Zabb PuTawn's original location on the Upper East Side is one of the neighborhood’s best options for Northern Thai food, and their second spot in Cobble Hill loses nothing in translation. If you live in the area, consider all your future Thai takeout needs handled. Additionally, the long narrow dining room has warm lighting, a full bar, and lots of space for small groups looking for a casual meal. A table of old friends drinking wine and going to town on some spicy raw shrimp salad and deep-fried naem gradook moo might inspire you to copy their order almost exactly. But be sure to order the thick, velvety kow soi gai as well. It’s a nice creamy balance to all the spice. Food Rundown SomTum Avocado There's mild, medium, and spicy som tum (and then an option with no spice at all). We like to go for a spicier salad, but add the avocado—the cool chunks mellow everything out slightly. Kow Soi Gai Always order this rich coconut curry with tender hunks of bone-in, skin-on chicken, and noodles two ways: fresh and chewy inside, and fried on top. Pad See Eew A Thai takeout classic done very well. Eat this on your couch, or order it as part of a proper sit-down spread." - Willa Moore

The location is so beautiful! We visited for lunch at about 2:30 and it was nice and quiet with just enough people inside.. staff is so kind and attentive and the food is by far so so authentic! I always go for a basil fried rice and this place really hits the flavors perfectly! The papaya salad is also so delicious and the crispy pork was cooked to perfection! Both of our drinks were made so perfectly and had just the right amount of kick to it! Highly recommend checking them out!

Came here on a whim, no expectations or what so ever, just wanted to have some Thai food. When we walked in, they greeted us warmly and really nice. Atmosphere is very fancy but surprisingly the prices on the menu are pretty reasonable. We randomly ordered appetizers and entrees. Everything was amazingly. Something as simple as a soup that came with the lunch special blown me away. Even my toddler kept asking for more because he was so tasty. Food was fresh, crispy appetizers were actually hot and crispy. Definitely a place that we would purposely travel to eat and recommend for our family and friends to visit.

We had a small dinner party in the backyard. Everything went perfect! The food and service was next level. I really appreciate their hospitality. Everything was so good! My favorite dishes were the Papaya Salad, Tom Zabb Gradook Moo, and Kor Moo Yang. Thank you again!

Wonderful service at Za PuTawn Brooklyn!! This is our second time and we were so delighted to come back. The atmosphere is charming and they have a really nice backyard. The food was also so tasty - many of the dishes are ones I remember having in Bangkok long ago. We look forward to our next trip here!

Zabb Putawn is a hidden gem! Every dish we ordered was spot on especially papaya salad , tom yum soup, and grilled liver. The balance of spicy, sour, and savory flavors was perfect. If you’re looking for real Thai food, this is the place!

Yelp
Thai restaurant with a focus on the northeastern Thai food of Isan. Originally located in the Upper East Side, this location in Cobble Hill makes for a strong new addition to the many Thai restaurants in the neighborhood. The decor feels kind of what you'd expect and the restaurant itself feels like a really long hallway although the table spacing is kept comfortable. Although they have the standard fare you see at most Thai restaurants across the US, this place really shines in dishes with flavor. We ordered a variety of things and ate family style to try things out. The waitstaff are quite nice and accommodating, also seemed like they were all speaking Thai to each other which is honestly a bit of a surprise considering this isn't even their main location. The Isan style papaya salad, som tum pu, comes with some absolutely delicious marinated blue crab pieces. Everything in the salad is just deeply savory and seafoody with a pleasant amount of heat, more-so than a lot of other Thai restaurants in the city but nowhere close to unbearable. Maybe not for you if funk and seafood isn't your thing but it was probably my favorite papaya salad I've had in the city. The laab moo kua was super flavorful and also pleasantly spicy. The dish had a really nice balance of textures between the ground pork, crispy skin (that is kept super crunchy by leaving it on the side, outside of the sauce), and the crunchy cartilage and the spices and chiles keep everything feeling quite light. The naem gradook moo are these deep fried, cured pork ribs that are deeply crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I honestly find lots of skewers and grilled meats at Thai restaurants really disappointing because they lack the char and crisp that I'm looking for with that type of food but this dish fully satisfies that need. Although there are certainly some people who will find the meat to bone ratio disappointing or even a bit too much work for the reward, I personally found that gnawing to be just pretty satisfying and a bit nostalgic. Only complaint is that the dish comes served with slivers of raw onion and some massive slices of raw ginger. Maybe it is custom to just gnaw on some ginger to cleanse your palette but it just feels like a bit much and I was the only one who even tried it. Just a bit of explanation of what to do with it would be nice, silly as it may sound. The yen ta fo noodle soup is fairly mild seafood soup brimming with toppings. The broth tastes like a mix between a clean pork broth and a bit of funk and savoriness from the red soybean paste. The seafood was all satisfying although kind of made me wish I had the massive sweet prawns common to South East Asia. A surprise delight was the snow fungus which just gave a little soft, slightly crunchy textural experience while also serving as a perfect little mop for broth. Only disappointment was the nuer yang. The beef suffers from being cooked a bit too much to be really beefy and tender but also lacking the char I would want from a grilled marinated meat. The jaew dipping sauce was lightly sweet and salty although I would have loved more depth or spice. Not even really a bad dish by any means but just really disappointing considering how good everything else was. This is definitely a product of how new the restaurant is to the neighborhood but this restaurant hits the holy trinity of being easy to get into, pretty reasonable in price, and just plain delicious. I can't imagine that the first point will last all too long but even with a wait, this restaurant deserves to stand alongside the other really great Thai eateries in the city although a lot of the flavors and textures here are really quite catered to my palate and what I grew up with. Honestly, my only complaint is that I want to try other dishes next time I'm here but I also want to relive some of the bites I've already had.

Yelp
A genuine authentic northern Thai restaurant in the heart of Cobble Hill. Just a heads up their spice level is drastically different to what the normal person deems as spicy so choose accordingly! The pork skewers we ordered were extremely tender and flavorful. Definitely a must order for the table! Loved the papaya and fried rice pork salad. A really great place to grab dinner with friends. The servers are super sweet and attentive. The only issue we had was there was a sign outside that read cocktails, wine and beers were discounted during happy hour but when we ordered cocktails they had charged us full price and told us cocktails were not included in the promotion.

Yelp
Side note: At least for now, they're using the same website as the old Ghang Thai for ordering but it seems they're making a site via Toast (which means you can order from there eventually which is good as the prices will be more reasonable for delivery compared to Grubhub/Seamless.) Other side note: As per below, if you order spicy here, it'll be very spicy (upper my tolerance and I am used to very spicy food.) I'd recommend mild or medium for folks used to let's say Pad Kee Mao. Anyway, this is the newest of the many (many) Thai spots in the area but this one is a bit different. While their lunch special mainly has the standard Thai dishes outside of a few notable exceptions like Pad Ped, Num Tok, and Yen Ta Fo, the main specialty of the restaurant is Northeastern Thai, i.e. Isan food. It's my personal favorite region for Thai food as I like the spicier, sourer, and bitterer side of it. The closest thing are a couple dishes at Boran which is a good 15 minutes walking away from here in Carroll Gardens. I went with the Yum Naem Kow Tod to go shortly before they closed for $19.00 listed as "crispy rice & soured pork sausage. Double fried rice croquettes with sausage, kaffir lime, ginger, chilies, mint, and roasted peanuts." The staff in front was nice and the music was light and as noted, they were closing soon. This is one of my favorite dishes from Isan and I've had it at their other spot along with some places in Elmhurst. I ordered spicy which was a slight mistake but it was delicious. A bit of crunch, a bit of sourness and sweetness from the sai ua/northern Thai sausage and the kaffir, and some nuttiness. It was excellent though I'd likely order medium next time if I wanted to not have to drink a good amount with the dish. Just as good as the other location so nice to have this dish around here.

Yelp
Great new option for flavorful Northern Thai food. Lots of interesting dishes and fun takes like the chef special papaya salad topped with crunchy pork cracklin - yum! Attentive and friendly service. Nice and spicy even at "Medium" level ;)
