Zaibatsu Review - Greenwich - London - The Infatuation

"Walking past Zaibatsu, you probably wouldn’t realise it’s one of the best sushi spots in Greenwich—and south London. The space is tiny, the seats are uncomfortable, the lighting is ghastly, and the service is often curt. But the food is truly phenomenal. There’s a huge menu of Japanese dishes but the sushi and sashimi are the main draw: fresh, expertly prepared, and excellent-value. The five-kind sashimi platter, for instance, costs less than £20 and features slivers of high-quality tuna, scallop, salmon, octopus, and sea bass all served at body temperature rather than fridge-cold. The inside out rolls are another must-order, particularly the snow crab and mango, as is the sweet, sticky nasu goma (grilled aubergine) caked in sesame paste. Ideally order them to come last, in place of one of the comparatively lacklustre desserts. " - Jonathan Hatchman

Where to Eat in Greenwich | The Best Restaurants in Greenwich | Eater London

"Minutes from Maze Hill station, Zaibatsu is perhaps Greenwich’s best kept secret. Unassuming from outside, like a rundown takeaway, the tiny ‘Japanese fusion’ restaurant prides itself on some of the best (and most reasonably priced) sashimi south of the river. Elsewhere, various Japanese classics are also served, free corkage is offered and a properly nurturing meal will rarely come to more than £25 per head. Be prepared to wait for a table at dinner." - Jonathan Hatchman

Google
Great price quality balance. Although this may not be my favourite sushi place in the town, I am very impressed of what I got for just one third of what I would have paid in another place. The sushi was fresh and tasty, good portions. The service is sadly not the best, I see employees working too hard in this place. Not sure who gets the tip I gave. The atmosphere of the place is nothing special, maybe better to get for takeaway.

Google
Delicious food at very very affordable price. Our sashimi taste fresh though a tad too cold for me. Upon was perfectly cooked, not too soggy or salty. There does seem like a bit of Chinese influences in the seasoning but still delicious nonetheless. Will definitely come here again. It's a very fast pace restaurant but you can see the staff and the locals have a cute relationship.

Food is excellent and very good value for money. Soft shell crab is divine and it could be made no spicy. And the seafood udon soup has a wide range of seafood and of very good quality. The eel rice is little too sweet to my taste but still good. Service is also very good and free orange as dessert. All dishes come super quicky. Tempura prawn is a little oily to my opinion but the fries mushroom is great. Only downside is the deco is very basic and no high chair or baby change (which I would expect for this type of restaurant anyway)

Just a small place but food and service is excellent. Good value for money. All dishes are well presented and food is nice and hot. All very fresh and tasty. Best to book in advance if going at weekend/evening. You can take your own alcohol but not soft drinks. Payment is cash only.

I’ve had takeout and eaten in the restaurant and both are great options (although if you want to eat in, you need to reserve a table in advance as they only have a handful of table). The food is value for money, the portion sizes are good and the food is always tasty. One of my favourites in this local area!

CASH ONLY! Have been here a few times now and the one thing that you come here for is always great - the sushi of course. The decor is very simple and utilitarian. Service is quick and attentive. They have a selection of soft drinks and operate a BYOB policy. Will definitely be back again. Make sure you bring cash!

Google
Strongly recommend this restaurant. Although there is not much interior decoration and less appealing outlook of the restaurant, here in this restaurant is offering you a great value meal. Mindful, pay by cash only. I recommend prawn tempura, sashimi. It was my first time to try white tuna sashimi. I want to try laksa next time.

Good tempura, not bad sushi set considering the prices. Malaysian curry chicken tastes good only 6 pounds. We had a good afternoon tea at this place.

Yelp
Excellent Asian fusion sushi - don't come here expecting only "authentic" Japanese rolls, though there are plenty on offer if that's what you're craving. The atmosphere is very low-key with the primary colour tables bringing some luncheonette vibes, but it's BYOB and the food is amazing, so who cares? For starters, the wasabi mayo prawns are excellent, as is the spicy salt & pepper soft shell crab. Their gyoza is nice too but I've never met a gyoza I didn't like. For sushi, the box sets are a good value - I've tried the Norwegian box and the sushi roll set, and they're both amazing with larger portions than you would expect. Out of the special rolls, the Dragon roll has my heart but the Norwegian roll makes a close second. If you're noticing a trend here, yes, I really love salmon and tobiko. I love this place, definitely my favorite sushi restaurant in London, and it seems to continually exist as a hidden gem that almost always has a free table whenever I drop in... knock on wood.

Yelp
Was visiting London (Canary Wharf) for work and had a craving for sushi. I was also sick of all of the food in our area. Found this great little hole in the wall. Go for the sushi and skip the other stuff. Rolls were good. Nigiri (eel and salmon) were actually really fresh. BYOB / BYOW.

Yelp
I honestly expected amazing sushi because of the Google reviews but that was absolutely not what I got. I ordered the salmon nigiri, tuna rolls and cucumber rolls. The salmon was so thickly cut, felt more like sashimi but not in a good way and the tuna rolls were disgusting. The cucumber roll were good but hey who can fail in cutting some cucumber and roll rice around them. The fish was just laying in a cold box and it didn't look fresh at all. They had stacked up all different kind of fish on top of each other. Don't go here, absolutely not worth your time or money.

Yelp
Say what??? It is beyond me why so many people have given this place glowing reviews, I'm quick to look past the dismal atmosphere and dirty bathroom (you go by dirty dishes on your way to dirty bathroom, joy!) and just rate on food. And on food everything was not particularly good and not particularly bad. Spicy edamame somehow manages to be missing flavour, black cod tempura is essentially fish & chips from your local chippy. Sushi of okay grade fish wise but nothing to write home about. Tried their mango/crab roll (usually love mango in sushi rolls) and was a bit off tasting and served with far too much mayonnaise on top. I love Japanese food and sushi above all else, this place is local but I didn't even bother to grab a take out menu on the way out. Much more of a fan of another sushi spot in the middle of Greenwich and am just disappointed overall with my experience at Zaibatsu. Won't be back soon.

Yelp
First up, the free starter offer is no longer honoured so that's a shame. We ordered a Norwegian Plate to share and that came out very quickly. It was really fresh and tasty, the rice soft and gently packed for the sushi. The Dragon Rolls came next and that was unusual and also very tasty and fresh. Creative and pleasant. The starters came out after both mains came. We ordered the Honey Crumbed Chicken and Salt & Pepper Squid. Piping hot and delicious, the chicken was lovely and the squid was absolutely delightful with crunchy discs of fried garlic, Chilli and spring onions. Would definitely go for that again next time. I had to remind the waitress about our drinks mid meal when I saw them chatting away to each other. That for a small business is a bit of a shame as there wasn't really that many customers to warrant the neglect. For 2 the meal was substantial and we both enjoyed it very much. 2 soft drinks, 2 starters and 2 sushi mains came up to £38. Not a bad deal. We will be back again I'm sure as the quality was actually really good and prob the nicest sushi this side of london.

Yelp
Can't praise the quality of the food highly enough. For appetiser the soft shell crab was beautifully spiced and a big favourite with the wife. My choice would be the lamb cutlet, expertly cooked to a nice pink with a delicious mint dressing, but somewhat bizarrely served on a log of wood (sounds strange but it didn't diminish the quality of the dish). The mark of a good Japanese can be tasted in the tempura batter, Zaibatsu's was light and crispy. Very generous portions also, the black cod came with about six pieces. Served with a western dipping sauce reminiscent of tartar though which pulled the dish into fish and chips territory, tasty but I'd definitely try a more traditional tempura option next time. We shared a Norwegian platter for main, a well presented all salmon sushi and sashimi set. The fish was excellent quality, better than many I've had at far more expensive venues. A small venue and quite basic decor, but they make the most of the limited space available. Our only minor gripe was that it can be a little chilly on a cold day if sat by the door. The service friendly and helpful. I'll definitely be back to sample the rest of the menu before long.

Yelp
I didn't really think I would like this place just because I'm so accustomed to the Chinese/Japanese restaurants in the states but this place is amazing! They have a fairly large menu for how small the actual restaurant is. I'll be honest, I've only had one entree from here but I ate it all the time. It was the combination Yaki Udon and wow, it was amazing. Every Frickin' Time. I recommend it to everyone. The portions are smaller compared to American portions but it was great. It gets 4 stars because I can't give it 5 stars just for one thing off the menu.

Yelp
Zaibatsu is a small Asian fusion cuisine restaurant on Trafalgar road near Maze Hill in Greenwich. If you see the outside, you will never imagine that this is one of the best Asian restaurants in London. The variety and types of starters and main dishes available is large. You can choose from noodles, soups and currys to sushi which is by the way amazing. Generally the tastes are carefully balanced and you can feel lots of spices and textures. The dishes are closer to the original Asian recipes than dishes from other restaurants. The place is fairly small and nothing special with a small number of tables. Most times you cannot find table in the evening because it has become quite popular. For this reason it would be good to reserve a table in advance. Personel really kind and helpful. Prices are cheap for the quality! There is also the option of the phone order and you can collect it after 20 minutes. Highly recommended!

Yelp
I called and made a reservation for my girlfriend and myself here that the restaurant completely failed to write down or honor. Very poor service at reception, refuse to recommend

Yelp
The sushi is the best I've come across in the area! Far superior than that terrible sticks and sushi down the street. Food and staff get six stars if I could! What lovely people.

Yelp
Zins was an amazing sushi cafe, somewhere that I spent most nights during 2009-2012. When George left for Thailand and the place turned into Zaibatsu, I was travelling. On my return - friends told me that the place had changed, ultimately it was NOT Zins anymore. I was determined that they must be wrong, how could someone mess up the formula? Great value, fresh sushi, really good Asian starters and some tasty noodle dishes. Well frankly on going there tonight it is clear what the agenda is, Presentation over Quality and Portion size. Our food was frankly below par on so many levels - sushi that was still part frozen, laksa that tasted like it had been made from a packet and a portion of Soft Shell Crab that was about a fifth of what they used to serve. But hey, if you like your raw fish served on a wood block with lots of fancy trimmings, then you might love it here! Come back Zins, you have been replaced by strangers that know nothing of billingsgate or real flavour....
