Dallas Pizzeria Zalat Will Open a Location in Midtown Houston - Eater Houston

"Zalat, a rapidly growing, Dallas-born pizza chain known for its creatively topped pies, will soon arrive in Houston. The restaurant is set to open its doors at 510 Gray Street later this year, marking the chain’s first expansion out of DFW. 'Houston was the most obvious choice for us,' founder Khanh Nguyen said in a statement. 'We think many Houstonians love and appreciate great food that is served without pretense, and that’s exactly who we are.' Nguyen also has ties to Houston — he attended Klein Forest High School and the University of Houston before heading north to Dallas. As far as the pies are concerned, expect chewy, thin-crust pizzas topped with everything from classic pepperoni to elote-style corn, Nashville hot chicken, and pickles. There’s also a pho-inspired pie appropriately called the 'Pho Shizzle.' Folks who dig dipping their pizza into ranch dressing should be especially excited — the restaurant’s 'Srirancha,' a mix of sriracha and ranch, is a favorite among Zalat fans. Since it opened in 2015, Zalat has expanded from a stoner-friendly pizzeria to a major player in Dallas’s pizza scene, where it currently operates more than 10 locations. Whether or not it will have the same staying power as Cane Rosso, the Dallas-based pizzeria that opened in the Heights in 2016, remains to be seen. No official opening timeline has been announced just yet for Zalat’s debut in Houston, but expect it to arrive sometime this summer. Stay tuned for an opening date." - Amy McCarthy

I purchased the miniz 9” pepperoni pizza on a Friday night around 6:30 pm. 10-15 minute wait. Decent. Extremely thin slices, a very thin layer of cheese and sauce, and about 12 pepperoni slices spread out across the entire pie. Immediately compared it to a Chuck-E-Cheese kid’s cheese pizza with a few pepperoni slices on it. Not comparable to their marketing photo at all. FYI - only online purchases count towards rewards points. No purchases in-store count. Staff was not mean or rude.

Guy working today was so kind and helpful. He told us there was a slight adjustment to our order and we were still okay with it because he was upfront about it. Will tip bigger just for him next time.

The sweet revenge has been our go-to pie since Zalat opened up in midtown a few years ago. I had a chance to connect with area leader, Bobby Boucher, and he’s a terrific guy who stands by his product and cares for his customers. I’ll always feel better paying a bit extra for a superior product and such excellent customer service. Thanks Bobby!

This is my first time ever hearing about Zalat Pizza. The pizza was delicious and they had great customer service. I’m very happy that I decided to visit on my downtown Houston stay. I will highly recommend this place to everyone.

Google
I enjoyed the pizza and the secret sauce that is offered. The cashier named Keey provided excellent customer service as well!

Google
We got the chicken bacon Bianca and it was very tasty, crust was crunchy enough, their sauce is magic. Really good pizza, we ate it in less than 10 minutes. We got the large version and it was more than enough for two people.

Google
I’ve only had delivery from here but the pizza is fairly priced for the size and the convenience of delivery! However it isn’t the most flavorful pizza out there, the sauce is a pretty bland. That being said the pizza is decent if you fix it up with parmesan and red pepper flakes.

Google
We ordered a Pepperoni MasterClass with fresh basil on the side. The 18 inch came out to about $23 which for the flavor and size was not bad the garlic and oregano really elevates the pizza and the sauce and cheese. Crust wasn’t too thick and had a nice crisp to it. The fresh basil also good and appreciated. Great customer service and love the hours. If you need a delicious late night pizza in the area this is a great spot.

Yelp
Food 8/10 almost always. Never comes out wrong and no matter if we eat there or take to go it's still fresh and hot. Fast service and quality ingredients just wish the price was reflected for the actual food you get. Will order again. Never eat there but the staff are friendly!

Yelp
They are are a REALLY fusion type pizza place with very creative specialty pizzas. I think they are originally from Dallas but have multiple locations throughout Texas. We usually get sausage pepperoni and the buffalo chicken pizza which comes with a swirl of buffalo and ranch sauces on top. They have all house made sauces so we order a couple of their sirRANCHa sauce which is siracha and and ranch mixed to give everything a a little spicy kick. They close a little earlier than I'd like and don't deliver.

Yelp
Ordered to go and my pizza was ready pretty quickly. It tasted hot and fresh and it was super delicious.

Yelp
Finally tried this place after reading all the good reviews on here. I checked out their website and loved their story, and that they do right by their employees, making sure that everyone gets a bit of the pie. Love that! I really wanted to like this pizza, and actually flavor wise it's good! I love a great shtick, and their Reaper Roulette Pizza slice is a great one- though it's the kinda spicy that doesn't add anything flavor wise- it's just meant to hurt, but again as far as gimmicks go, it's great. I just deeply disliked the crust, it was thin and tastes like cardboard. I love me a NY thin crust, greasy and foldable. This is not that. So you're left with great sauce and toppings but a deeply disappointing vehicle that it's delivered on. Oh well, lots of places to try, and tons of great pizza places to explore!

Yelp
Really great delivery/takeout pizza option. The staff is friendly. They have good prices on pizzas, and the pizzas themselves taste great. They put a little sauce on the side which is a nice touch.

Yelp
buffalo chicken pizza was delicious and ready pretty quickly. easy to call ahead order.

Yelp
Ordered from here for, like, the third or fourth time. They were running great promo so why not? I want to like this place SO badly but I just do not like their pizza at all. It's fresh, and served quickly, which I DO like. But the crust is just really not good....and the cheese and sauce are kinda super average...I hate that I'm saying this. Again, I wanna like them SO bad...maybe I just came on an off day, I don't know. Will probably try them again though lol

Yelp
We ordered these to go and I don't think there is any actual seating inside, but we were in a hurry, so I can't be 100% positive about that. Zalat Pizza is fun because of all the weird pizza flavors like Pho Pizza and Elote Pizza, which you aren't going to find anywhere else. I do like the taste and quality. Odd note, I'm not sure if I'm choosing this option or if all their pizzas are like this, but they tend to stay on the thin crust side. It could just me be choosing it. I'm use to thicker crust pizza, but the thinner crust is still good, and that's saying a lot as someone who isn't a thin crust fan. I use the app, because I think service is always fastest when you put in an order as opposed to waiting in a long line. I think your pizza will be done about 2-4 minutes before the app notifies you. I only knew cause my husband and I were parked outside waiting. The only major ding is the price. This is like New York and Chicago priced pizza. Like we all can afford $3000 a month pizza. I'm just not feeling that. If it wasn't on the pricey side, I'd probably be asking hubby to order it more often.

Yelp
Me and my lady are trying to pan out of the usual Pizza Hut and Dominos pizza nights and do more local institutions instead of mainstream. I gotta say, Zalat Pizza really set the bar HIGH for me. I'm not Italian, but whenever I think of pizza, I expect it to really be made with love (and not too much grease); these guys did just that. I had a pick up order, they have a nice little brick-and-mortar spot in midtown on Gray St. The service was quick, but I really appreciate the guy who bagged my order, he included everything and gave us some extra packets. It says our order was prepared by "G", so shout out that man! We got the 12' Pepperoni Masterclass Pizza and some cheesey bread sticks. Sublime food, not TOO heavy, and the flavors definitely made me understand why they called it a "Masterclass" Pizza. This is our second time having this place, so this review is well overdue. However, this review only gets four stars because of the damn crust....I don't mind a thin crust but it just wasn't hitting like it should've. I don't think that's the employees fault, maybe we just gotta go back to the drawing board with the flour preparation, (again, not an Italian). I saw other reviews about the crust and really hoped this to not be true. So maybe this will be the straw to break the camels back! If you're looking for a quick slice for a decent price, I'd recommend this place. They have many locations around Houston, so please give these guys a look!

Yelp
I had called in to place an order an the person I spoke to gave me bad customer service , this was the only place open around so I decided to go up there , I went to the window and an employee with orange sweater on was being rude for no reason an I don't appreciate that., never will I be here again.

Yelp
One of my favorite pizza places in Midtown! There are a lot of options here! Our favs are the Hottie, the Pepperoni Masterclass and the Simple Basil with shrooms added.. What I love about this place is the pepperoni is made with beef, since I don't eat pork. The Hottie is just that ... hot, thanks to crushed read pepper, jalapeños and tobacco sauce. The side of sriRancha is perfect to balance out the heat. You can pretty much customize each half of any pie here. You can also choose Reaper Roulette, which is just a randomly selected slice made ultra hot for one lucky person. I have never tried this and not sure I ever will! They have plenty of parking and terrific pizza!

Yelp
The phoshizzel pizza has a great flavor! One of my favorites. Tried them for a resident event and they did not disappoint. Hot and fresh.

Yelp
Beef pepperonis. Listen, do you know how hard it is to find beef pepperonis in Houston. It's pretty hard. This place does it!! I ordered online. They have a nice window where you can order and pick up. Staff is super friendly. I ordered an 18 inch beef pepperoni with half bacon. I believe they messed up but I never saw it and they made me a new one. While I waited, they gave two free slices of pizza for the mistake. It's very cute how each box has a message from the staff on the inside! Pizza was delicious! I'm definitely coming back and have been telling everyone since!

Rose L.

Yelp
Below quality service and pizza. The guy didn't even greet me when entering . Pizza is not good, I'm not sure how they have multiple locations open. Just go to Little Caesar's same quality for a cheaper price.

Yelp
I had been seeing ads for Zalat on Facebook for a few days, and let's just say they piqued my interested. My mom had also been craving pizza, so I showed her a few pictures. I happened to have an Uber Eats coupon, so we decided to order on a weekday night. We opted for the Pho Shizzle and Pesto Veggie pizzas. Each pizza came with a DELICIOUS cream sauce that we drowned our slices in, complete with a sprinkle of Parmesan and red chili flakes. The Pho Shizzle was our favorite - the sriracha swirl and chicken combo was very tasty. The pizzas were delightfully thin - I would love to try them again! I definitely recommend Zalat for some interesting pizzas. I was intrigued by several of their menu options, so I can't wait to order again!

Yelp
The best pizza in town. The Elote is a must try. Tobias was so charming and helpful. Give them a try.

Yelp
Ordered a pie for delivery last night. I just happened to drive past and saw a few cars in the parking lot. So I placed an order for a margherita pizza (added black olives) and small Cesar salad. I ordered via Yelp and the service was fine. Easy and straight forward. Since I didn't dine in, I can't speak to the environment of the restaurant. But I can say that the quality of the food was great. The pie was delicious and different than I had had at other pizza restaurants. I particularly liked the balsamic glaze. And I really liked the home made sriracha ranch! Im assuming that the delivery driver had other stops because the food was cold by the time I got it. But next time I'll dine in so that I can get the full flavor and experience.

Yelp
Finally got to try this place after months of seeing it everywhere! I ordered the pesto veggie and added their beef pepperoni to it. I was very excited to see that they actually have BEEF pepperoni for those of use who don't like to eat pork and just couldn't pass it up. The pizza itself was great! It was a little thinner than I expected but it had great flavor and I loved the crispy edges. Also, the siracha ranch might be my new go to dipping sauce for pizza...SO GOOD! I saw the reaper roulette as an option when ordering online and as a spicy food lover I had to do it. They had a warning on there that said it was REALLY spicy....they weren't lying! I ended up getting the spicy slice and OMG. My entire mouth was on fire for like 15-20 minutes. IT IS VERY SPICY! Good thing I love a challenge lol. I will definitely be ordering from here again!!
google avatar

Yelp
You won't find a better late night pizza spot inside the loop! Huge fan of the pepperoni master class!

Yelp
It was a gloomy night in Houston so my fiancé & I decided to stay in and pickup some pizza for dinner. This was our second time getting Zalat Pizza and it was yet again amazing!!! I love how they have so many yummy and not boring options. Last time I got a half Pineapple Express & half Phoshizle pizza, and it was so good. This time I tried the Nashville Hot Chicken & Pickles pizza and it didn't disappoint. It was sweet & spicy, which I love! My fiancé got the NYC - half sausage & half pepperoni, they were both great too!! We got the Sriracha & Buffalo dipping sauces on the side - both so yummy!!! The employees here are always so kind and helpful. They write messages on the box inside which is sweet! Looking forward to coming back here again next time we have another pizza craving!
google avatar

Kathryn B.

Yelp
Pizza tasted great. My personal opinion is it looked like it was cooked to long and the crust was dried out. Their ranch is amazing. Cheese and pepperoni ratio was lovely. I would either share this is more a thin crust as there was no rise in the dough. But it's good!
google avatar

Anon Y.

Yelp
I ordered this pizza at like 12 am it was probably the best pizza I've had in a while. It was fresh hot and every bite was delicious . There's literally no complaints at all. My new fav pizza spot
google avatar

Julian M.

Yelp
Pizza looked and smelled super good but I didn't eat it. I ended up giving it to someone and they ate it all.... Guess it must've been really good lol
google avatar

Yelp
Zalat Pizza just opened up - I think they're originally from Dallas?! The pies were good - a nice flavorful, crispy thin crust. Their flavors were unique - the bacon, jalapeños, pineapple one was super duper spicy! Made my sinuses run! The pepperoni was as expected. Pizzas were thin crust but pretty large. They have a set menu of pre-made pies you can order from; don't think you can customize at all here. Overall, pretty delish for what it is! Great addition to H-town!
google avatar

Lotus H.

Yelp
Online order saved us $5. First pie came out oblong and they made us another but gave both to us for the price of one We have never heard of Zalat, but it was a delicious beef pepperoni / Italian sausage pizza. We like the thin crust and quality was good. Now we have pizza to share!
google avatar

Casey C.

Yelp
The pizza was good but the service was severely lacking. It took well over an hour of waiting for our pick up order. Employees were not the friendliest. A lot of the other customers waiting outside were not happy either. I am updating my review because of the great customer service I received in response to the issues I had experienced previously. I am thankful for businesses that actually take the time to remedy things for their customers. We need more places like that. I am more than happy to give Zalat another chance and I actually look forward to doing so!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Had been hearing about this place so figured a Saturday night would be the perfect time to try it. My friend doesn't eat pork so it did narrow our choices but we landed on a margherita that was DELICIOUS I was surprised as how much I enjoyed it but it was crisp, lots of flavor, didn't get soggy. Price was a little high but I think worth it We ordered directly on the website for delivery and my pizza got to my place in about an hour+-ish, through a door dash driver. Cant wait to try the other pizzas

Yelp
Ordered 2 pizzas on Sunday for a 1030am pick up and their timeliness was amazing. When I walked in the staff was welcoming, attentive and immediately provided me with my pizzas. Not to mention you can smell the pizzas a couple doors down, freaking amazing. We got the pho shizzle and pepperoni masterclass. Upon opening, each box came with a personalized message which I enjoyed, but more importantly, the pizzas were steamy, well put together and didn't have that overly greasy look (thank goodness). Each slice had a good crisp hold and an amazing cheese stretch. I come to find out that these two pizza are among their top orders, and I can see why. When you come here for the first time, you NEED to order these! Will be coming back really soon to try the rest of the menu

Yelp
Awesome service and pizza Delicioso. Quick and and great service. First time trying out this place and was not disappointed at all

Yelp

Deanna C.

Yelp
Great customer service and plenty of flavors to choose from. Plus they are open pretty late
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
I only ordered from delivery however, I was very impressed at the speed and deliciousness of the pizza especially since it was after 2 AM and I was so hungry and everything else was closed when I arrived in Houston
google avatar

Demetrius N.

Yelp
First time at Zalat in Midtown. Staff was friendly, pizza is DELICIOUS!!! This will definitely not be our last time there!!
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
I'm not going to even go into it. Just get a pizza from here and then come back and thank me later. The buffalo chicken and simple basil are - **chefs kiss**. Oh and go ahead and get yourself a couple extra srirancha sauces.

Faith K.

Yelp
First time here but great vibes and. Hospitality. Can't wait to try the pizza..................................
google avatar

Lindsey A.

Yelp
This place has ruined pizza from any other pizzeria.. This is not to sound dramatic however, I have NEVER had such good bread or a pizza that could hold its fold (always some kind of soft spot from grease iykyk) but I have to say hands down from the crunch to the unique topping choices I was impressed! I highly recommend trying the specialty pizzas because this place knows how to push the concept without going overboard. You will not be disappointed! 10/10 solid place!

Garcia D.

Yelp
Ordered the Margarita and the Pepperoni Masterclass, delicious! Great customer service from Phillip! Next time Im ordering the Elote, yummy. They were on Channel 13's "Localish", good story.
google avatar

Ameena P.

Yelp
I don't know how Muslims got tricked into sharing this place as a restaurant they can eat at. Even the name sounds Islamic. I don't eat only-halal but this beef pepperoni is not halal as we assumed it was before ordering. It was delivered 40 min late and wasn't fresh hot but I still enjoyed the pepperoni w basil pizza. We got the meat lovers pizza too which in the description says "all beef pepperoni, bacon, salami..." so we thought "all beef" applied to each of the meats listed after pepperoni. Only to eat it and then find out we were wrong as it's pork. Very disappointing finding out the beef pepperoni is not halal, and the other meats were not what we thought they were.
google avatar

Yelp
I have always been wanting to try this place because I deliver their pizza from time to time as a courier. I had the chance to try one of their pizza it was gifted to me by Steve who said it was over cooked. In my personal opinion that how I like my pizza thin crust yet crispy at the same time. It's not overwhelming on the carb to cheese and topping ratio. Steve also put me on a Valentino sauce at least I didn't have to wait to finally try the place. If you are a courier I recommend that you get there driver delivery coupon. They offer free pizza for just delivering there pizza! They are opened late hours on the weekend and have a 50% off on weekday. Online app order only Monday- Wednesday. Code is ILovezalat001.

Isaac T.

Yelp
Good but not great. Got a good deal on the pizzas through ordering but just wasn't the best. Definitely better options, but interesting. Maybe again.
google avatar

Josh M.

Yelp
This was an interesting experience when placing my order. More or less every food delivery service will let you place an order. You cannot call them to place the order however it seems. So I sent my order in via door dash and showed up at the little window 20 minutes later. Wasn't ready yet, so I hung out for maybe another 10 minutes. Turns out my 18" pizza wasn't up to spec in their opinion, so they made me another separate smaller version of it. Didn't really need to do that, but I can dig their interest in going above and beyond to make their own error a mistake. Mind you the 18" was fine, just more oblong than round, but whatever. Kudos to y'all for that! Will for sure be back, and looking forward to the reaper roulette.
google avatar

Yelp
Super tastey pizza, loved it! Couldn't decide so did half Crave (plus added jalapeños) and half Pho Shizzle. Was spectacular!!! I'm more of a traditional pizza flavor guy but thought I'd give the Pho Shizzle a try and it now might be my new go-to pizza. Was delicious! Also all the slices of the pie had a great crisp and wasn't too dry and definitely not too oily. That trifecta is tough to accomplish and they perfected it. Also owners and staff are all super friendly. Will definitely be back again, many many times!!!
google avatar

Yelp
If you like the experience of expensive pizza that tastes worse than Domino's... you'll love Zalat. The crust isn't soft and pillowy--it's chewy (but not in a good NY style way) and a little dry with cornmeal which I don't like. There's zero sauce on the pesto veggie--literally zero. I lifted up the toppings couldn't find "tompesto" anywhere and the balsamic glaze is super overpowering--it's all you taste plus some raw tomatoes. Very disappointing. The pepperoni masterclass is just greasy and sauceless... tastes like garlic and cheese and salty, greasy pepperoni. Overall I would still way rather have papa Johns or dominos and they're like $6 not $22, but even if they all cost the same i wouldn't want Zalat. Don't understand the good reviews. Hope they can improve and do better but so far not making the cut but for now I'd recommend you give your business to someone else.

Steve B.

Yelp
I finally got a chance to check out Zalat Pizza, and let me tell you, it was definitely worth the wait. I ordered the Zealot (no olives, added jalapeños) and the Pho Shizzle. Other than the eclectic variety of pizzas they offer, Zalat differentiates itself with its crust. It's a relatively thin crust that is chewy yet sturdy enough to handle the mountain of toppings on the pizzas, and is also delicious. PRO TIP - hoisin sauce is sweet, so be prepared for that if you order the Pho Shizzle. Adding a little more sriracha and/or red pepper flakes can help with that, if you feel like the sauce is too sweet for you. I can't wait to go back and try the other pizzas on the menu.
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
Great pizza. Step up from other options in the downtown/midtown neighborhood. This is our families new favorite pizza place! They clearly put a lot of thought into the product. It just seems just a great the next day or cold from the fridge and the Sri-rancha sauce is killer with the crushed red pepper. Only complaint is that it's tastes just the tiniest bit salty. I never complain about too salty and love when the seasoning takes it right to the edge like this. One of the best options in downtown/midtown. Long time resident.
google avatar

Jackie K.

Yelp
We tried Zalat Pizza and really liked it! They have fun, non-traditional toppings--I really liked the teriyaki chicken pizza, so flavorful and delicious. I don't know if I've had this style of pizza in Houston before--it's thin crust, but hearty thin crust. Frankly, I think my favorite style of pizza is still Neapolitan, but Zalat added some nice variety to the mix. Note that it seems like more of a takeout spot, not sit-down.
google avatar

Yelp
Chicken teriyaki pizza is the absolute best! I had it for the first time Sunday and was very pleased. Very surprised how good the combo went together. Enjoyed!

Yelp
My first time ...I got the sweet revenge. Chefs kiss! Will definitely being ordering again soon.

Yelp
This restaurant is trash. The food is not the same quality as the other restaurants. Their service is absolutely awful. I ordered a pizza and the service personnel hung up on me. The manager called me back and said they don't honor the promotions and told me to and I quote "get lost" if I wanted the promotion.
