The Best Indian Restaurants in San Francisco | Eater SF

"The godfather of Indian pizza lives on Mission Street. While it’s up for debate whose pizza is the finest, it’s considered canon Zante is the first in the city to put a chicken tikka masala riff on the ubiquitous Italian-American dish. These days the move is two-fold: walk over for a less than $5 slice, if you’re in the area and strolling the strip toward Valencia Street maybe. But ordering one of the classics — or a relative newcomer such as Paneer masala with ginger and eggplant — for takeout is always smart." - Paolo Bicchieri

Best Pizza for Delivery in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Zante is the city’s standard bearer for Indian pizza, a truly wonderful thing if you haven’t yet experienced it. The classic chicken masala — perhaps the most iconic offering in the landscape of Indian pizzas — is probably the most popular pick, but even the most basic options come loaded with spinach, eggplant, cauliflower, ginger, and garlic, and other good stuff. Delivery is available via apps like Grubhub and Seamless." - Luke Tsai

A San Francisco original since the 1980s, Zante popularized Indian pizza—think masala-sauced pies with chutneys—alongside North Indian standards. Featured by Eater and beloved in Bernal, it’s quirky, historic, and distinctly local.

Seriously the best and I mean the best Indian pizza in the whole Bay Area. Also with the kindest and most patient people working. You can feel the love and care in the food. I got the vegetarian Marsala slices to go the sauces they give you will blow you away. I got this food to go bit I have eaten inside in the past.

Google
This place is probably the best place for Indian Food in all of bay area! I love their pizza's as you can really taste the spices and flavor to it compared to other places. They can make it spicy or not but both are amazing. Customer service is even better! I have been coming to this place for over 20 years!!

I recently visited Zante's Pizza and I must say, I was blown away by the amazing food and friendly customer service. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for delicious pizza and Indian fusion cuisine. First and foremost, the food was incredible. I ordered The Best Indian Pizza- Vegetarian Half and The Best Indian Pizza with Paneer masala, and both were bursting with flavor. The crust was crispy and the toppings were fresh and perfectly cooked. The chutney sauces that were provided with each pizza added an extra layer of deliciousness and I highly recommend trying them with all the dishes. In addition to the pizzas, I also ordered Vegetable Pakora and Paneer Pakora, both of which were crispy, savory and flavorful. The dipping sauces that accompanied the pakoras were also outstanding. The customer service at Zante's Pizza was also top-notch. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and they made sure that I had everything I needed throughout my meal. They even took the time to explain the different chutney sauces and recommended which ones would go best with each dish. One small recommendation for the pizzas is to add more sauce. It really makes a difference in bringing out the flavors of the toppings. Overall, I highly recommend Zante's Pizza to anyone looking for amazing pizza and Indian fusion cuisine. Make sure to try the chutney sauces with all the dishes! Here's a breakdown of what I ordered: - The Best Indian Pizza- Vegetarian Half - The Best Indian Pizza with Paneer masala (Half) - Vegetable Pakora - Paneer Pakora - Papar

Some of the best breads I’ve ever tasted! The Indian pizza was delicious! Our waiter was really hospitable and funny. Service was quick. The food was amazing. If you’re a fan of pizza and have never tried Indian pizza from this place, do yourself a favor and try this place asap! You won’t regret it.

Google
Absolutely incredible vegan pizza, highly recommend getting it exactly as it is served and adding some tamarind sauce. Would definitely come back!

walked in during lunch time to a restaurant i couldn’t tell if they were open or closed. dim lighting aside, a guy sitting on the side assured me they were open, and came up to me to take my order. i asked for a slice of vegetarian masala pizza and he seemed confused. another employee (???) came into the store and sliced me a slice of pizza from something (!) behind the counter and then led me to a credit card machine behind the counter that neither of the men seemed to know how it worked. from my vantage point behind the counter, i was shocked to see what was clearly mold on the pizza he had just removed a slice from to heat up for me. i immediately left the store and will not ever return. unclear how it could be ever acceptable to serve someone pizza from a pie that is so visibly moldy, even if the mold hadn’t reached that slice—it’s bread, that’s not how bread works. i love Indian pizza and the reviews here were so wonderful im really disappointed to see how far this restaurant has fallen. i hope anyone else who visits this establishment finds a complete night and day different from what they find and what i experienced today. no one deserves moldy pizza, that is such a bare minimum, a given.

Google
The Pizza at Zante is uniquely flavored, with my favorite Indian flavors. The dining room is dark and decorated with old school Goodwill looking furniture. I couldn't offer an opinion for service because I had to wait a long time at the counter to place an order. Parking is a challenge but I had luck on Cortland. Zante is worth a try.

Google
the Chicken Tikka Masala pizza was life changing. That is not hyperbole. This pie belongs in the Smithsonian. Eating it, I felt I was entering a globalist, borderless future and eating a pie as a citizen of the United Nations of Earth. as a traveling New Yorker: I am quick to criticize any slice of pizza I eat outside of the city, but this pie is unimpeachable. If you are a local or if you're a traveler, you MUST try this pie.

Yelp
Phenomenal pizza, great service, super friendly, best pizza I've had in south sf, definitely going back.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years now and this place does not disappoint. The food is amazing and the customer service is top notch. The pizza's they make are so good with rich taste of cheese and veggies.

Yelp
Great mix of fresh Indian food on Nan. Delivered Hot-and Fresh from the Zante truck team. We did 1/2 &1/2 of veggies and non veggie Today I ate the Dahl and tasted like homemade

Yelp
Ordered from here the first (and last) time yesterday from Door Dash. We ordered 5 items and they ranged from below average to terrible. The Best Indian Pizza with Chicken Masala Sauce - Somehow completely flavorless - Random pieces of beer on the pizza - Tasted like one piece of lamb made it's way onto pizza - 2/10 Butter Naan and Garlic Kulcha - Only acceptable item - Didn't taste stale or too hard - Was still very bland - 4/10 Chicken Tikka Masala - Half an inch of oil at the top of the container - Color was fine but flavor completely absent - Did not have any spice or tartness - 1/10 Seekh Kebab - Literally not a seekh kebab. Looked like they sent a lamb tikka kebab. - I had one bite and tossed the rest since it tasted so bad. - 0/10 I'll obviously never be ordering from here again. Surprised this place has 4+ stars on Door Dash and Google.

Yelp
I've been ordering Zante's vegetarian Indian pizza for at least 20 years and have had it over 50 times at this point. I usually get it with sides of tikka masala and raita for dipping the pizza. I'd pair it with mango lassis for me and my friends as well. It used to be amazing, but no longer. The pizza was always hot and filled with good veggies plus just enough cheese to pull it all together. The tikka masala was creamy and fresh. The mango lassis were a perfect combination of mango and yogurt -- sweet and refreshing. Something changed about a year to two years ago, though, and my last four orders from Zante's have been awful, culminating in last night's order that has made me decide to never order from them again and to leave this review. 1) Tikka masala. It came with literally 1/2 an inch of grease on the top of it: it was absolutely inedible and we threw it out. See picture. 2) Vegetarian Indian pizza. This was basically just what tasted like old and rancid saag, cheese, and garlic. It arrived lukewarm and the crust tasted strangely stale. Worst of all, I've been up all night with food poisoning/violent diarrhea from the one piece I ate. My stomach is gurgling as I write this message, and I had to take a break from writing to use the bathroom again. 3) Mango lassi. That was still good, but it's literally the only edible item from the order. 4) Raita. It smelled off and was thrown out, too. I'm really bummed because I used to love this pizza and have referred many friends to them over the years and ordered it as a treat for many others. But after noticing that the pizza had been going downhill in my past few orders and how sick it made me last night, plus the absolutely disgusting tikka masala they let leave their restaurant last night, I just can't order from them anymore and will never recommend them again.

Yelp
Chicken Tikka Masala- flavor is decent but over the pizza is very dry on top, so doesn't work well for me on a pizza. Medium comes with 8 slices as shown. Naan- the cheese stuffed w/ spices one is weird, dont recommend. garlic naan could use a bit more salt? both are very fluffy. butter chicken and lamb korma both looked exactly the same on appearance which was odd since one is usually more orange and the other yellow. Pretty offputting that so much oil sits on top of the curry for both but the flavors were really rich and creamy.

Yelp
I've had Indian pizza a couple times before, but Zante has been on my list for a while, since this spot is hailed for introducing the concept of Indian pizza itself. Parking is a bit tough, being right off Mission, but there's plenty of seating inside. My friend and I ordered a medium pizza, which was more than enough food. They let us do half & half, so we went with best Indian meat and chicken tikka masala- This is pretty much a review of just that. Overall the flavors were much more muted than the initial impression we got from the menu descriptions, and especially compared to the options I've tried in south bay. The chicken tikka masala I would even go so far as to describe as bland. I really wish the flavors were as in your face as ordering the traditional dishes. On the other hand, the dough was exceptional- pillowy, tasty, and crusted on the bottom; somewhat reminiscent of Detroit or Chicago style. The bill total came out to $19 each (incl. tax/tip), which is really affordable considering the volume of food you get. While the Indian pizza didn't quite do it for me, I truly appreciate the establishment for putting the dish on the map. And I can see myself coming back to try the rest of the menu.

Yelp
Have come here quite a few times for the paneer pizza (both for dine in and takeout) and each time it's been consistently good! The cilantro and the sauce and the paneer all come together SUPER well. The dough is also super fluffy and soft in the perfect way. We always ask for extra sweet sauce and they are always nice enough to give us a TON when we order delivery. I will say the inside is not the nicest place... but that's what you get with hole in the wall restaurants!
google avatar

Ziyan C.

Yelp
I haven't had a lot of Indian pizza, but my friends who have tried a lot can attest this is the only good spot in the bay area! We called for a pick-up order on a Sunday around 7pm. They estimated 15 minutes, but it took 30. We got a chicken and a vegetarian pizza. Must get the dipping sauce (we forgot to ask during pickup!). Both were good - not the best pizza of my life compared to regular pizzas, but the Indian toppings were unique and done well.
google avatar

Yelp
Have I seriously never reviewed this place? WHAAAATTTT. We'll wait a minute I like ultimate reviewed this place on Check Please so... Haha here's that: https://youtu.be/Zj9vlNWObuE But seriously you go here for their indian pizza. It's the best! I personally love the vegetarian Indian pizza not the chicken Tikka pizza. I know most of you will want to go for it, but if you do at least also get the vegetarian version too so you could see which you like best. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT forget the sauces. I got a funny story about that on Check Please lol. But this place is a SF staple. You must go here to up your SF experience

Yelp
What the heck happened to their pizza?! I remember it used to be good years ago. We ordered two xl Indian pizzas and samosas for pick up. First they charged us for samosas then never gave it to us, we had to call back to ask for a refund. All excited to eat the pizza, we were ALL disappointed the crust had a weird spongy texture and everything was super bland!! When you need to add a ton of salt to Indian pizza, that's a huge problem. And to top it off this bad meal cost $100!!! I think I'll have to stick with either Brothers pizza or Golden Gate pizza for Indian pizza from now on. I'm really shocked since I thought this place was the originals of indian pizza

Max R.

Yelp
Definitely glad that I stopped by this place. What a gem. Delicious food and a wide menu which I look forward to coming back to try much more of. Wonderful service which was beyond attentive, it was the type of service which you get at the Ritz! It was like the guy wanted to make sure he took care of our every need. Also; they're open late (or late for San Francisco at least). I came here with my gal after we went to a concert and were able to get a table and eat in the restaurant. Will definitely be back! Highly recommended
google avatar

Anvita S.

Yelp
Sad to leave a low rating since our service was friendly and fast. At the end of the day, the flavors were not suited to the Indian palette and diluted for more western tastes. The chicken tikka pizza could be just phenomenal with the addition of a creamy sauce topping or more cheese. As for the curries - lamb curry needed more flavor and the meat was chewy. Matar paneer was 90% peas and the naan was basic and plain. However the chicken, lamb and shrimp kebabs that accompanied the non veg thali were quite good. Given other Indian restaurants in SF, we'd opt for a different option for a night out next time.

June B.

Yelp
The chicken tikka and paneer tikka pizzas tasted good. Not too spicy not too bland. Onion bhaji was tasty. Very reasonable prices for bay area. Seating and ambience is not the best but for a quick meal its a good spot.

A Z.

Yelp
2 slices for $13 is a bit pricey. Also seemed greasy and older, granted we did go at night. Wish it had more fresh vegetables in it though
google avatar

MK C.

Yelp
This is my favorite pizza on earth. 11/10 recommend. Place really needs a makeover though..
google avatar

Zach H.

Yelp
Was great back in the day but is now horrible. Got the basic Indian pizza. Totally stale and undercooked. Absolutely disgusting
google avatar

Martin O.

Yelp
OK, so the decor is not so great. And yes, the friendliness could be better. To be honest, I have never ordered anything other than the Indian pizzas. The paneer masala pizza will change your view of pizza. Now they have the chicken masala pizza, different and equally good. If you are in the mood for comfort food with a twist, you cannot go wrong. The pizza topics and dough are spiced without being spicy. The toppings are chopped finely. The flavor explosion is so unique. One night I left some in my oven over night, and the next day I had to throw it away. I literally still beat myself up over that night.
google avatar

Liam W.

Yelp
This place is fire. The great tikka masala pizza, or whatever it's called, is incredible. I have been here over a dozen times and it's always incredible. I bought one today and it was all I ate, all day, and I was happy. The cilantro and tamarind chutneys are delicious. Tamarind in the crust, cilantro on the main part of the pizza. Also the food comes out super fast and they're very no-nonsense. They even have a vegan pizza that my vegan friend would order and it was so good. I am not even vegan and it was absolutely excellent. My only complaint is the delivery. Hands down worst delivery experiences I've ever had. I once waited over 2 hours for it to arrive. I once waited another time for over an hour and I literally lived only a mile away. Horrible delivery service. Never do delivery. If you do pickup, you won't be disappointed.

Kaly G.

Yelp
Manager made good on the delivery problem, so I will order from them in the future, I but I will pick up my order myself instead of waiting for delivery.
google avatar

Jen N.

Yelp
The Indian pizza is super authentic & so flavorful! I really loved their pizza. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Bobby B.

Yelp
I love their Indian pizza I've been going there for over 20 years the one with spinach sauce
google avatar

Smruti A.

Yelp
The place was on my bookmarks for the longest time and finally we stopped there for a meal. Though this place has an elaborate Indian menu, we got their popular Indian pizzas. We got a half and half with The Best Indian Pizza and The Best Indian Pizza with Paneer Tikka Masala. The half with paneer was okay, felt more like a mix of a couple of Indian curries on a pizza base. The Best Indian Pizza side was spectacular. Perfectly spiced toppings, just enough cheese on the base. The specialty of the place is the base for sure. A cross between Indian naan and pizza base, this one was unique and we would definitely come back for more! Placed the order over phone and our pizza was ready in 12-15 minutes. Not super busy just before lunch time on a weekday. Have heard a lot about their dal makhani pizza and that is going to be our next try. Totally recommend this place for a pizza or two!

August W.

Yelp
Ordered takeout, large paneer masala pizza, definitely hit the spot. Food was ready in 15 minutes. Flavorful, filling, over-priced but unique and satisfying enough that it was worth it. Cold leftovers the next day were just as good. Looking forward to next time!
google avatar

Priyanka C.

Yelp
Wanted to like this place but the pizzas were a total miss. Ordered a paneer pizza and chicken tikka pizza on Saturday night and it came about 30 min late (food delivery service said they were at the location waiting for the order). When the pizzas arrived they were bland and barely had any toppings. No chutneys were given along with our order, which made the bland, doughy crust almost unbearable to eat but we were starving after a flight home. The paneer pizza had the smallest little pieces of paneer, and half of those little pieces on the pizza were cauliflower. The chicken tikka had some tiny dollops of chicken tikka masala -- for $27 a pizza this was such a disappointment. Will be going back to my other Indian pizza place in the city after this.
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
This was my first time having a Indian pizza. I was really excited about the food and went with my buddy who grew up in an Indian family eating Indian food his entire life. He was raving about the experience and I couldn't wait. The pizza was very fresh and I loved the Indian spices that woven into the crust. It was a true fusion that I absolutely loved. I would say it was a little pricey for pizza and the actual operational execution of the pizza wasn't perfect. Sauce and cheese didn't extend all the way to the edge of the crust. But, overall still a stellar tasting pizza which is the most important part by far
google avatar

Sarah F.

Yelp
EXTREMELY RUDE MANAGEMENT! I left a one star review several months ago. I am lactose intolerant, and have been told by Zantes in the past they have vegan options. I recently found out that the staff was misleading patrons- and felt called to leave a review advising other dairy-free guests. The management reached out to me directly & then proceeded to insult me.

Ezra L.

Yelp
The food was alright but the pepperonis where wired tasting The service was not that good and they came late for me The ambiance was really good

Sitara N.

Yelp
After doing some yelp research, I opted for the Indian pizza w extra sauce, half chicken/half paneer and some sides of their tamarind & mint sauces. All I can say is: REVOLUTIONARY. SERIOUSLY BRILLIANT
google avatar

Leeyen R.

Yelp
Maybe it was my mistake in ordering chicken tikka masala at an Indian pizza place... It was bad. Not sure if it needed salt or sugar or what but it tasted not fresh and then I felt sick afterwards. Writing this review to remind myself not to go back.
google avatar

J M.

Yelp
Pizza had an excellent crust, super fragrant with all the Indian spices and the dipping sauces really brought home a whole India on a pizza experience.
google avatar

Elisa S.

Yelp
Phenomenal pizza! Super fresh, cake-like crust, Indian spices and heavenly flavors. The samosas are also incredible. Wish we had a Zante in the East Bay. I had SF friends bring us a pizza for my wife's birthday and she was a very happy lady! I used to eat at Zante decades ago when I lived in SF, and I'm so glad it's still thriving. Thank you, Zante for wonderful food made with love!
google avatar

Anna D.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place after hearing rave reviews from a friend. I'm glad I did! I ordered a small Chicken Tikka Masala pizza to-go. I thought it was tasty. The pizza was ready within 15 mins of me calling in for my order. The only con is that it is pricey for the size. I paid $26 after tip for a small pizza.

Don S.

Yelp
We love Zante Indian Pizza. It is super tasty and one of the more unique pizzas around
google avatar

Phil S.

Yelp
Again more fabulous pizzas from Zante. The chicken Tikka was superb. The winner was the paneer Tikka za. This is fusion cuisine at it's absolute best. The curry flavor in the crust, the flavorful toppings, and the Tikka was beyond good, beyond delicious -- it was a religious experience.
google avatar

Shauna f.

Yelp
If you like something different this is the place for you. Pizza crust is oh so yummy with the infused spices. Toppings are so different and good.
google avatar

Ann Oyed ..

Yelp
Go here Order from here Get this in your belly !! It's incredible If you like amazing Indian food in the shape of a pizza this is the spot for you
google avatar

Denise T.

Yelp
I've been to Zante's a handful of times and always get their Indian pizzas. We really like the chicken tikka masala and best Indian pizzas. This time we had the best Indian meat pizza (spinach, eggplant, cauliflower, ginger, garlic, green onions, cilantro, lamb, tandoori chicken, prawns). The pizza tasted great and I would have given 4 stars, but I'm not sure where the lamb and prawns went this time. We didn't taste them at all and couldn't find a trace of either in the pizza. However, the crust was light and thin and there was a good amount of tandoori chicken, cauliflower, and tasty curry sauce. This is a hole in the wall pizza joint and I recommend getting takeout because they definitely lack in customer service. The Indian pizzas are good though and I will still continue to get them.
google avatar

Radha K.

Yelp
Delicious pizza always hand delivered hot and well ahead of time! The quantities for the cost are also well worth it.
google avatar

Steven O.

Yelp
BAD BAD BAD. I wanted to like this place. I really did. It was a miracle our food arrived after very rude interactions with the owner. Pizza was extremely bland. Still ate entire thing with my friend tho. My disappointment is immeasurable and my night ruined.
google avatar

Jules S.

Yelp
Zante's is always a sure bet when you need to feed a party! While not the hippest (my friend used to waitress there 30 years ago when it had a different name and says it looks exactly the same except for the PacMan machine is gone), it's a great place to meet up with a group of peeps as the dining area is open and rarely too busy to accommodate a last minute group. What's Indian pizza? Think naan, topped with cheese and tikki marsala! Delish!
google avatar

Naina S.

Yelp
We got an x-large chicken tikka pizza and it came with about 14 long slices that were delicious! The flavor was really there and I loved the chutneys they gave with them pizza as dipping sauces. We split it between 4-5 of us and it fed us well. I would go again! It's a real hole in the wall spot that we know we'll be frequenting again since we live so close. I'm looking forward to going back and trying their more authentic Indian food too. A few cons-- I wish there was more chicken on the pizza and a little less oil. But, overall I felt the pros outweighed the cons!
google avatar

I M.

Yelp
The original SF Indian pizza. I wish they would open more locations in the east bay, but I'll happily pick up a pie to take home whenever I'm in the neighborhood. The other food is good too, but I'm too focused on the pizza.

Isaiah S.

Yelp
My chicken Biriyani had a hair in it. The chicken tiki masala only 4 cuts of chicken inside. Also the flavors tasted watered down. As well I had ordered a pizza with pepperoni salami and mushroom. Yet the pizza only had pepperoni and mushrooms on it. Completely dissatisfied and disappointed especially spending close to 100 dollars
google avatar

Caya S.

Yelp
I've been going to Zante Pizza since I was a little girl a looong time ago! Their Indian Pizzas are absolutely amazing, but the owner is truly a treasure. He always hugs my kids and treats us like family, in the best way. If you have guests, wow them by ordering from Zante- and make sure to get the sweet and spicy sauces!

Elizabeth J.

Yelp
We've ordered- both in house and take out- for the last 22 years. The food has always been great. We ordered delivery tonight over 1 hour and 29 minutes ago and are still waiting. I normally don't complain about waiting, except that we've called twice over the last half hour and have been assured that it's within 10 minutes. VERY disappointing considering it's 8:40pm... do not order delivery and expect it to get to you in a reasonable time. I could have walked over there and back. oh- an update! they FINALLY delivered... but only a portion of the order.... so paid for a pizza... but didn't actually get it??? don't bother with this place. customer service has gone waaay down
google avatar

Keerthana K.

Yelp
Great place to order 2-3 pizzas for a party. The dhal makhani pizza is the best pizza I have had recently. Yes it's super rich and buttery with a lot of bready goodness.
google avatar

Sarah T.

Yelp
I adore Indian pizza with all its glory. Spices, herbs, buttery and delicious. Zante's serves up a decent pizza, but it's unfortunate that it leaves much to be desired. The tandoori chicken is unfortunately very dry. The sauces are heavy and lacks flavor. A decent pizza for a craving, but not the best. Feels a bit unworthy of the high calorie intake.
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
AMAZING pizza! The flavors are absolutely fantastic! We have been enjoying their pizza for over 7 years and they have made many improvements! Delivery is super reliable now! Ingredients are better distributed. One of my favorite meals in The city! We have never dined in, it's a bit of a hole in the wall.
google avatar

Tim P.

Yelp
I like Indian pizza. I've had it several places. Each one has a different take in it. Zante's gives you an array of choices to make an Indian flavor or you can choose the standard paneer tikka masala or chicken tikka masala. Bonus: they serve the pizza with tamarind and coriander sauces on the side.
