Finally the best restaurant I have been to while living in Germany! (and it's not in my 'home' city of Munich) Keep reading passed my initial expectations / stereotype because it won me over!
Here's a few things to note...
- Expensive - expense account types, hot date, girls night out, boys night out
- Dimly lit, sexy, ambient music
After passing an 80 year old man exiting with a 25 year old woman as I entered (my colleague used the P word), I immediately felt like this might be a scene at Nobu 57. Checking out the decor, I felt like I was at Buddakan. If you don't know these references, they are to Asian Fusion restaurants (read 'hot spots') in NYC. What you can expect is mediocre food, very expensive, but a pretty scene and typically a good time.
Zenzakan is fits the bill for the scene and expensive aspect but the FOOD, and the SERVICE, both VERY GOOD.
You need lights to see the menu? Not a problem. You spill on the tablecloth, they are there to wipe down, re-do the table and bring you new napkins within minutes.
We ordered the 'Sushi' Platter. Please note this is nearly all Specialty Maki rather than straight sashimi or a piece of raw fish on a bed of rice. The names are half the fun. I couldn't distinguish everything on the mixed platter but there were several that I actually slowed my chew for and smiled while eating. They were THAT GOOD. Order the Sexy Freak Wave Sake Roll. Order the Pimp with Shrimp. The Spciy Tuna Roll is sweet with Thaimango - so good. Also the Spicy Spider Roll and the Eel option. There wasn't anything I didn't like.
I was very intrigued by the Honey Hoi Sin "Mu Shu" Chicken but ultimately chose the Peppercrusted Miso Black Cod with Spinach & Shiitake. I figured if I was going to compare it to the hot spot Asian Fusion places in NYC, I may as well see how the typical Black Cod stacks up. And again, it won.
The shitake mushrooms were sliced in an incredibly decadent buttery cream sauce. With the spinach and the cod, this was just music in my mouth. The pepper-crust was the perfect compliment without being over-powering but adding to the flavor and texture.
My colleagues said the Mu Shu chicken was also spectacular. I had food envy when our meals were served, until I had my first bite.
If you've read this far, danke schoen.
