Mom-&-pop market for catfish & tilapia also selling take-out eats like po' boys & boiled crawfish.
"Zimmer’s is a delicious nod to the history of the po’boy. They serve a version of the OG sandwich that came with french fries and gravy on Italian bread, the one that gave po’boys their name in 1929 when they fed the “poor boys” on the streetcar strike. Zimmer’s still uses that same loaf from John Gendusa’s Bakery, now two doors down. We love the sesame seeds on the bread, and the fact that it’s a little softer than French bread, less prone to crumbs, and not as likely to tear up the roof of our mouths. The standouts are anything involving seafood, like half-and-half shrimp and oyster, shrimp and catfish, or oyster and catfish—Zimmer’s is a seafood market after all. All of the po’boys are perfect to take and eat on the nearby Lake Pontchartrain." - megan braden perry

"Head down Elysian Fields into Gentilly to hit Zimmer’s on St. Anthony Avenue and you won’t be disappointed. A top crawfish destination, it’s also known for its fried seafood and hot sausage po’ boy. But all the po’boys are jam-packed with goodness." - Clair Lorell, Beth D'Addono
"Zimmer’s is a family-owned Gentilly institution, known for some of the best boiled crawfish in town. But platters and po’ boys of the fried seafood variety are an equal star, particularly the shrimp. The key component at Zimmer’s is freshness, from the seafood to the bread — we all known stale bread ruins a po’ boy, and you won’t find it here. Fried softshell crab po’ boys are on the menu in season." - Eater Staff
