How the Pacific Northwest Became a Coffee Paradise - Eater Portland

"More than any other roasting company in the Pacific Northwest, Zoka shifted perceptions of coffee as a culinary experience during the late 1990s and aughts, sourcing some of the world’s most expensive microlot coffees, championing visionary coffee producers, and extolling the virtues — and price-worthiness — of specific coffees from specific farms in its Tangletown Café, opened in 1997, long before this was a common conversation." - Jordan Michelman

Zoka Coffee Roaster & Tea Company - Review - Seattle - The Infatuation

"Zoka has a very delicious lavender mocha that will kickstart your productivity. The whole space is suspiciously quiet and full of dark brown wooden furniture, so it feels like a library where you can get some serious tasks done in peace. There’s no silent rule in here or anything, but you probably won’t want to carry on a loud conversation. photo credit: Erin Lodi" - Aimee Rizzo

Google
Amazing coffeeshop in a really nice peaceful neighborhood. Loved the vibes and de or. The coffee was amazing. What I loved is the breakfast burrito I got was small. I hate going to a coffee shop and they either have sweet pastries, or a breakfast burrito the size of my head. I loved this place. Bathrooms were also really clean.

This is a spacious place, great for relaxing and/or plugging in. They have a few cozy chairs by the window, where I made my throne for a couple hours. The plain latte I ordered was 10/10 quality, so I have no doubt every espresso drink here is good. The pastry case looked excellent; I had the vegan raspberry oat scone was just as excellent as it looked -- not super sweet, decently moist and soft inside, and very satisfying. They also had a couple of hot breakfast items on the menu that I was less excited about. Overall, this is a very lovable shop I'd be happy to revisit next time I'm in town.

Google
I always find myself coming back to this cafe. The cozy environment is great for working on a chill Sunday morning. I'm not going to say all the chairs are super comfortable and plush but the wood and warm tones make the place feel very welcoming. The place is quite large for a coffee shop, without feeling cold, and there's usually a table seat available. And as the coffee, I've found it consistently decent. All in all, would highly recommend!

Google
The café has a beautiful ambiance with a great vibe, and the coffee quality is top-notch. However, since we visited at the end of the day, the blueberry muffins were quite dry and tasted a bit stale.

Google
August 5, 2024. Their espresso drinks sizes are 8 ounce, 12 ounce and 16 ounce. Their cappuccino is a traditional 6 ounce size with very dry foam, but they will make it in 8 ounce size if you ask for it. The cappuccino was excellent! The chocolate chip cookie was pretty good too. They also offer a limited menu of breakfast and lunch sandwiches, though note some of them are packaged. They will warm them up in a sandwich press for you. In the summer, they have outdoor seating on the sunny side.

Bogeum Choi

Google
Absolutely love this place! Very laptop-friendly, communal, good coffee and food options. I particularly love their wooden desks and chairs!

Google
A nice coffee place in the Tangletown neighborhood of Seattle. Service was great but I was there during slow time. The latte was up to Seattle standard, not quite a Vivace, but not far off. I would visit again and may be meet up with friends here, the space is warm and inviting, and not too loud.

Google
At Zoka vibes are great, but the food and coffee are not. They have served me a breakfast wrap that wasn’t fully heated through multiple times. Their coffee is a light roast which can be fine, but their baristas seem to be pulling pretty early, leaving a bitter drink 60% of the time. I wanted to love this place because it’s such a great, well decorated neighborhood spot, but can’t justify spending money on the low quality fare (especially for the price).

Yelp
Sitting at the airport right now with a subpar latte and I can't help but reminisce about how good the lavendar latte I had at Zokas was. I took it for granted. Sweetness was not overwhelming and the coffee was so strong. I didn't get my usual 3pm crash and it didn't give me anxiety. That lavendar latte seriously gave me the best of both worlds

Yelp
I think it would be great if they could update the details here because it says Dogs allowed. I had checked here before I arrive and wanted to work here. Come to my surprise Im not allowed to sit down and work with my dog. I wish i knew this ahead of time :(

Yelp
The coffee here is perfectly balanced and rich! I got a latte and an iced americano with almond milk. They actually do some nice latte designs which I always appreciate. The place itself is full of people working and I like that the cafe itself is somewhat dim because there's a lot of natural light that floods in. Creates a nice ambiance with the wooden furniture and homey vibes. Lots of outlets, good amount of residential street parking nearby. Friendly staff! I was trying to decide between a few drinks and the barista let me try a small sample of the lavender chai in case I wouldn't like it.

Yelp
I definitely recommend this place for working and/or socializing. COFFEE: - I only tried their cortado, which was flavorful and served quickly. They have an assortment of other drinks and pastries that I think is reasonably priced and smelled really good. A friend of mine tried their espresso and provided positive reviews too AMBIENCE: - this was the main selling point for me. Plenty of seats, chargers, and options whether you want to sit and work by yourself or be in a table with a group. The music isn't too loud so you're able to focus. The ambience is the quintessential coffee-shop vibe that I've been looking for. CLEANLINESS: -the underrated metric: this place is clean and neat

Yelp
A hidden gem of a neighborhood coffee shop tucked into the Wallingford and Greek Lake area! I stopped by on a Saturday morning and it was already bustling with people who brought books, laptops, and crossword puzzles to work on. They have plenty of seating inside, as well as a few smaller tables outside, too. I love that they have local artist's work on the walls, and everything about the ambiance was really cozy and welcoming. The baristas were friendly and I liked the spiced chai I got -- can definitely see myself coming back!

Yelp
Cute neighborhood coffee shop! Came in to meet up with a colleague and was suitably impressed with the ambiance, service and coffee offerings. There is plenty of work space for all. It was a bit crowded on a weekday afternoon, but we were able to secure a table no problem and able to carry on a conversation without having to shout, which is a problem at other cafes I've been to. The beverages are delicious and the baked goods were tasty too.

Yelp
Aww, this was a lovely neighborhood spot! My bff and I had a staycay in Wallingford one weekend, and we wanted to try a local coffee shop before hitting the road. So our footsteps led us to Zoka, and parking in the street wasn't actually that bad! The space is cozy, and there are ample tables/chargers to get work done/hang out. Since it was a Saturday morning, most people were there to pick up coffee before heading out to do other things, just like us! We got their *lavender latte ($4.50 for 16 oz): this was made well, just had the slightest hint of lavender taste. *peppermint mocha ($5.75 for 16 oz): I thought that this had the perfect balance of mocha and peppermint! The heart latte art was an added bonus. Would be back to try more drinks/get work done/chill here!

Yelp
Incredible atmosphere with even more amazing coffee. Highly recommend this place. I'm writing this review about a week after going there, so I don't remember exactly what I got, but I do remember it being the best coffee I had while in Seattle.

Yelp
This local gem offers delicious coffee and pastries, creating a wonderful ambiance for hanging out, studying, or working. Although I docked a star due to a desire for more food variety, my overall experience at this coffee shop has been excellent.

Yelp
Not as good as in past. It has been years and they still don't have clear accurate pricing on items especially the non dairy milks or/and on all sizes High sur charge for non dairy milk It is not 75 to a dollar for the milk in one drink but that is what they charge you. Wish the business would consider balancing out your costs so is more equitable. They refuse to talk about it They are going to raise costs the owner told me. On everything.

Yelp
5/5 Overall! One of my favorite spots. Drinks: They're a brand that can be sold in stores, so you know it's quality. If you aren't a coffee drinker, they have great tea choices. Food: Some breakfast foods over $10, that can fill you if you find yourself here overall a mealtime and can't leave for lunch. Seating/crowd: Definitely a WFH crowd or quiet study spot with some older folks quietly enjoying their time. They have big tables which is great for groups and quite a lot of 2 person tables where lots of people are often working. Lots of outlets. I easily spend hours here. Service: Usually 1-2 people, so potentially slower paced but never had a problem. Friendly. Parking: Street parking, usually park down the neighborhood.

Yelp
Stopped in here for a coffee on a Friday morning prior to going for a walk at Greenlake. It must be a neighborhood favorite as there were already 5-6 people in line after we received our drinks. The vibes of this coffee shop are on point; it definitely has a cozy feel yet is spacious for plenty of patrons. The reason for 4 stars is because my chai was unfortunately more milk than chai taste. I would have liked it to have more of that spicy chai taste instead of just a hint of chai. My boyfriend ordered a drip coffee and said it was really good, not bitter tasting. Prices are pretty comparable to other local shops. I would definitely come here again but will order something besides the chai.

Chase E.

Yelp
I was disappointed with my latte because it was lukewarm instead of hot. Given that it cost $7, I expected the temperature to be correct at the very least.

Yelp
Love this Zoka. Super chill atmosphere, serving staff extremely friendly... kind. Coffee delish. Got the house drip. Breakfast burrito and breakfast sausage sandwich also outstanding. And solid baked goods offering.

Bria ..

Yelp
Their coffee is good, but their vegan burrito was SO bad I feel I need to warn fellow vegans. I feel like making an edible vegan burrito isn't too difficult with beans and rice and cheese, but this texture and flavor is reminiscent of the worst kinds of canned refried beans.

Yelp
Zoka is a perfect neighborhood coffee stop. It's on a central corner for the tangletown neighborhood near green lake, but quiet and still feels like a "locals only" spot. The coffee is always top notch, I typically order one of their seasonal lattes with nonfat milk and they are consistently well balanced and not overly sweet. Honey lavender was this weekend's find and YUM I will be ordering again. Unfortunately, the food at Zoka is hit or miss. I've had breakfast burritos I liked alright, bagels I've loved, and then some finds like this weekends sandwich which was so bad I almost did something I never do and asked for a replacement. The sandwich was a mozzarella pesto tomato melt but it was in a premade tin foil and clearly reheated in the foil because it was soggy all around the edges of the bread and still not melted in the middle. Additionally, the toppings were scare and generally flavorless. Picture is of the middle of the sandwich showing the lack of much toppings or pesto. All together my sandwich and 16 oz latte was $18 which felt very steep for such a sad sandwich. So moral of the story: go to zoka but don't get the food. Instead, this is a perfect spot to escape your WFH setup and spend a few hours working remotely while sipping on a great coffee (or two)!

Yelp
Probably one of my favorite coffee shops I've visited during my time in Seattle. I ordered a 8oz Carmel latte and an everything bagel with cream cheese (came out to $8) and both were delicious. Probably one of my fav Carmel lattes I've had. They only gave me one of cream cheese and that was not enough so they gave me another one which I appreciated. I went around 11am and was able to find seating. I also didn't have much trouble finding parking, just be aware it is in a residential area. Definitely would be back!

Yelp
I have never been to this location.... However , I can easily say this is some of the best coffee I have ever had.. it is clearly a business for coffee lovers by coffee lovers. Im embarrassed to say that they have managed to source better Colombian coffee ..... I was born in Colombia for crying out loud ! The magic doesn't stop at their sourcing though .... They roast the beans after they get your order which means you get coffee that was recently roasted and not sitting losing its tasty quality..... Warning : once you have this coffee, every other bag will taste bland Tangletown blend is a must try and favorite ! Also recommend the Colombian "la Palma I el tucán"

Yelp
I'm usually a fan of local establishments whenever possible, as opposed to big chains. Nothing wrong with a warm beverage from Starbucks when I'm in in a pinch, but if I have a choice, I'll pick the small, local establishments/chains. I've been going to Zoka's on N. 56th near the University since I moved to Seattle. Generally, I get a pick of chai--I love coffee, but it doesn't love me--and they have three to choose from: Morning Glory (kinda standard fare), ginger (a bit zippier), and lavender (not my fave). What I also do, religiously, is buy bags of roasted coffee beans for friends, at Xmas time and as gifts. Their coffee is exceptional (yes, I've tried it, wish I could drink it more), and a freshly roasted bag of beans from their shop is invariably a hit. Nice place to hang with friends too. Plenty of room to sit inside. Very limited outdoor seating.

Yelp
Super cute and calming cafe. It's very spacious and I love that the tables are pretty spread out. The tables, floors, and walls are all made of wood, so it has a modern cabin feel. The music they play is great and calming. The coffee is also delicious. Love their lavender mocha. And the staff are really nice and seem happy to be there.
google avatar

Brian G.

Yelp
Zoka is fine. If you are cold, want a drink, and don't want to go with a chain then it fits the bill. It is a space with a lot of wood and it gives off a very warm feel. So the atmosphere is decent. Overall though it just wasn't a place that really stood out to me. It is also a drink first place with a very limited selection of food items. My wife and brother in law did really like their drinks so I'd rate the coffee 4 or 5 stars but just the overall experience lower.

Dhwani K.

Yelp
My favorite coffee shop!! Rich, smooth and delicious coffee at Zoka! Cute quaint spot in Seattle and is always full! We ordered hazenult lattes and our order was made with lot of love and exactly the way we wanted. Thank you Zoka for living upto it!
google avatar

Amirissa M.

Yelp
Really fun and chill vibe with a nice baristas. I only had the spicy mocha, so my perspective is limited as it was only ok. I would have given 3 stars based on the drink alone but added another star based on staff and ambiance.

Will ..

Yelp
Great place to relax and read. Plenty of space with good lighting and good coffee/ pastries. A true neighborhood gem
google avatar

Matthew S.

Yelp
Love this coffee shop, been coming here for years. Not sure about the new hiring process, employees didn't even smile or care about the order. Forgot our food and it felt like it was our fault. Coffee was good, worst morning hello vibes at greenlake, sad.
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
So impressed with their coffee! I tried one of their seasonal drinks (honey lavender latte) and my friend got one of their hot teas. I was caffeine deprived for over a week, and I can say it didn't disappoint. The inside has a chill vibe and restrooms are open to all customers. This was probably one of my favorite coffee spots in the Seattle area! The one thing though is my interaction with the staff was a little bizarre, the barista was super nice but her manager was extremely cold and standoffish. They also sell their beans by the bag right by the register.
google avatar

Gihani D.

Yelp
I got a thai iced tea and it was good. A little sweet but still tasty and the service was quick. They seem to have quite a few drink options. Because they asked for masks on and I was thirsty, I didn't want to sit inside....but aside from 4 occupied chairs (no tables), they did not have outdoor seating. Luckily we found a spot to sit a block away but it would have been nice if there were more outdoor seating options. A huge point of confusion for me before arriving: do they serve food here??? I went on a Sunday in mid July 2021 around 11am and there was no food for sale except a few cookies. However many people on Yelp and other review sites mention eating food here so maybe their menu changed. Either way if you plan on coming here, do not expect food!! If I lived near here I'd come again but it was a nice change to check it out.

Yelp
Atmosphere boosted this to a 5 from a 4. Latte is solid, staff is nice and the place is beautiful. Good for a chat or work.
google avatar

Carmelia M.

Yelp
Cute corner coffee shop with bright lighting, plenty of seating and wifi - great for getting some work done! Love how spacious the place is. I got an large iced oat latte. Definitely one of my favorite spots in the area!

Esty J.

Yelp
Oooof so insanely expensive. $5 for a slice of banana bread. I get this city is expensive but that is egregious.
google avatar

Yelp
Revisited after a hiatus in the mid to late 1990s pre Yelp (god those amazing cakes back in the day!) for a fairly consistent, near two year run. 117 Yelp check-ins and a gazillion photos as of this evening (4/4/18). Probably spent enough to have funded a modest retirement account. Zoka with the dwindling familiar baristas. Props to Alan (from Bremerton!) and Joyce (who migrated to Google)...thanks for being so welcoming even when there's a long line. Lovely latte art. Eclectic music. Giant cookies. Condusive for thought. Lots of reading and writing accomplished. Decompress and chill among the sea of laptops, when seating is available. Great outdoor seating during the warmer months. Good times and positive memories. But eventually all good things run its course at this established indie cafe in Tangletown. Used up all my acquired freebies. Wished Mr. Maximo could have ventured across the street to have a mocha and relaxed chat. But that too isn't going to happen. Ever. Thankfully, this too fades with time. Au revoir, original Zoka.
google avatar

Dan N.

Yelp
Good coffee quick service These guys make a good cup of brew with a nice environment to sit and enjoy
google avatar

Wyn R.

Yelp
Great coffee and tea. Great baked goods. Really friendly staff. Good amount of different types of seating, which I really appreciate. It's a great place to meet friends or to get some work done. Love this place!
google avatar

Grayson P.

Yelp
Bon the barista was very helpful and knowledgeable about the coffee - great extraction and perfect temperature. I could see how community-oriented the shop is; the flyers for events and artwork showcased the close ties Zoka has to its neighborhood. Will definitely be visiting again soon!
google avatar

Jesse P.

Yelp
Solid coffee house. But it also seems a bit cold to me. Kind of exclusive. Their coffee is on point though, so I will definitely come back for more. Definitely worth your business.
google avatar

Tanaya N.

Yelp
The lady at the barista was so cold to talk to. I had a gibraltar and a mocha and both were so mild. Had to throw more than half away since it tasted really sad. Not going back here.

Hunter R.

Yelp
Our favorite neighborhood coffee shop! Really great coffee. PSA to all, they recently changed their dog policy! No pets besides services animals allowed inside anymore
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Never again! Rude service by the tall girl with the tats, decent coffee and the other shorter girl was extremely sweet and kind. B/c of my horrible interaction with the other girl, I'll never go to another Zoka again, as well as letting everyone else know how disgusting her service was. I was tipping $3 a drink only to be harassed while drinking my coffee! She even had the audacity to interrupt and yell at me while on a phone call.
google avatar

Trent C.

Yelp
Love this place. The atmosphere is amazing and is an amazing space to catch up with a friend, work on a project, read a book, do a cross word, etc. The staff is kind and witty. Also great for getting a to go drink and walking Tangletown. The neighborhood is gorgeous.

David A.

Yelp
Great coffee, soul-less, unkept bathroom. Zoka is a meditation on the capitalist system writ large. Underpaid young staff with a starter package lounge vibe, combined with an expensive menu, plus a dirty bathroom...and the best dirty chai latte with almond milk I've ever had.
google avatar

Olena V.

Yelp
I would rate this place 3.5 stars, probably because I expected more. I order a raspberry mocha which didn't really taste like coffee, too much sweetness. The quiches were great but when I asked salt, they didn't have any available. I would say that this place is just okay.
google avatar

Athene D.

Yelp
This warm cup of caffeine which is sure to warm your soul. We were tucked away in the corner having a meeting and it was definitely a place where you could go to have a conversation
google avatar

Maggie L.

Yelp
Solid coffee. Nice place to study and get some work done cause they have large tables. Calming quiet vibe. They don't play music which is good for getting work done. Outlets are all on the edges of shop away from the large table. Nice latte art and good taste. Don't recommend getting the matcha latte.
google avatar

Rose W.

Yelp
We found free street parking 2 blocks away. It's in a quiter part of town. It's good for a quick cup of coffee, students and independent workers on their laptops. I loved the natural light and big open space, especially on a typical Seattle rainy day. I loved the lavender mocha, it was the perfect combination of lavender and coffee. Neither overwhelmed the other. There isn't much food options but we came just for coffee.
google avatar

Ann K.

Yelp
I came with a friend in the afternoon, say about 3pm, and we got some bomb ass coffee, and found seats despite the place being packed with people studying with books or their laptops. Granted, the coffee was a menacing price of $6 for a small latte, but I did ask for it with soy milk. It still hurts though. I got the lavender mocha, and it was probably one of my favorite flavor combos, I'm just really digging the random flavors this time of year, gotta add some spice to life when you live in Seattle all year, because damn are winters tough. My friend got an americano and I don't know if she liked it but she finished it so that probably counts for something right? I love the atmosphere of the place and would for sure come again alone to get some reading or working done over a weekend.
google avatar

Jerry T.

Yelp
Quaint coffee shop that caters more to studying/reading than chatting. Fairly priced drinks, friendly service, and good ambience - nothing special and flashy, just a solid joint. As is standard for Seattle coffee shops, you have your classic espresso, drip, latte, etc. I ordered the Cappucino while my friend ordered the hot chocolate. The Cappucino (which I ordered with soy) was a lot smaller than I expected, but it was one of the better espresso-based drinks I've had in a while. The hot chocolate, on the other hand, was ENORMOUS and smelled fantastic - definitely something that I'll have to come here again to get. There are plenty of tables and reclining chairs to sit at, and the bathroom was very clean as well. I might not come here again to catch up with a friend, but I'd definitely come here again to sip hot cocoa on a rainy day and indulge in a book!

Yelp
Came in to Zoka this morning after a run around Green Lake, so a sweet treat was much needed! On a Thursday morning, parking was very easy. It's located on the corner of two streets, so very easy to find as well. The space inside is pretty big and there are tons of tables for reading/chit chatting/studying/etc. The free wifi was a bonus, too! I initially found the menu a little confusing, but the kind barista helped me out and even let me try my iced tea before I ordered it. It was a sort of hibiscus, lavender, and cinnamon iced tea and was absolutely delicious! Perfect for cooling down after a run on a warm summer morning. I'll definitely be back to hang out a little more next time. Worth a visit if you're in the area!
google avatar

Eric F.

Yelp
An expansive and cozy coffeeshop in the Green Lake area, Zoka is the perfect spot to catch up with a friend, read, study, what have you. All the usual espresso drinks can be had along with drip coffee and a selection of single origin roasts via V60 or Chemex. Service was friendly and efficient - a big plus considering how busy the line was and how massive some customer's orders were (can you say 1 dozen bags of beans plus drinks?)
