Shopping in Guadeloupe is a thrill. On the one hand you get the best of French goods, from perfumes and beauty products to trendy beach apparel, and on the other you get Guadeloupean arts and crafts. On Grande Terre, Sainte-Anne’s artisanal fabrics will have you renewing your beach closet, while the colorful markets of Pointe-a-Pitre are ideal for stocking up on cooking spices. Guadeloupean rhum—which also comes in delicious fruit flavors—and cacao are sold island-wide, while the shopping malls house French designer brands. The best packing advice for Guadeloupe is to save plenty of luggage space. Credit: Collected by Lebawit Lily Girma, AFAR Local Expert

Spice Market

Market · Guadeloupe

"Pointe-à-Pitre Markets On the weekend, market days in Pointe-à-Pitre are like an outdoor celebration, with gwo-ka drumming on the streets leading to the markets. Browse the attractive stalls brimming with spice-filled bags at the Spice Market before checking out the arts and crafts and madras textiles and moving on to fruits and vegetables at Marché de la Darse on the waterfront. Take a break at a nearby café afterwards, and relax some more to the sound of the drums."

St. Anne Market

Produce market

"Saint-Anne Market Guadeloupe's outdoor markets are an important part of daily life and a sight for sore eyes. Fragrant cooking spices compete with colorful bottles of homemade rhum, women in traditional madras head ties smile at passersby, zouk music or gwo-ka drums blast in the background, and the calm Caribbean Sea is the backdrop. Saint-Anne Market, on Grande-Terre Island, is a favorite. It borders a beautiful white-sand beach, steps from a row of casual restaurants and bars."

Located in Pointe-Noire, an area where cacao once grew abundantly, Maison du Cacao offers tastings and an on-site shop where you can purchase their chocolate bars."

LE DOMAINE DE SÉVERIN

Permanently Closed

"One of Guadeloupe’s top rhum distilleries is set on beautiful former sugar cane plantation grounds in Basse-Terre. There’s a trolley tour through the grounds that also provides information about Guadeloupe’s rhum and history. Take a walk through the Domaine de Séverin grounds afterwards and see the sugar cane processing if you are there during the February to June harvest season. A half-hour of free tastings of the multiple flavored rhums is, of course, a high point. Shop in the store for your favorites before you leave."
