"Ciudad Universitaria After centuries downtown, Mexico’s National Autonomous University's main campus was moved to the city’s (then) far south in 1954, to a gleaming, contemporary quadrant designed to symbolize the nation’s engagement with intellectuality as well as its forward-thinking outlook. Despite some visible wear and tear, the Ciudad Universitaria compound is still deeply impressive, leveraging masterful tonalities when it comes to open and closed spaces, monumentality, color, and thrilling works by Mexico’s star 20th-century artists David Alfaro Siqueiros and Juan O’Gorman. The latter’s mural for the windowless, multistory Central Library, which is composed of impossibly complex, sometimes freaky allegorical mosaics, is one of the world’s largest—in addition to being a masterpiece. And don’t miss a visit to the University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC), south of the main campus: The 2008 structure by architect Teodoro González de León is, many say, the most beautiful artwork in its collection."
