"A Turning Point of the War Vietnam's imperial capital and an ancient seat of learning and culture, Hue is etched deep in the psyche of the country's people. That's why the Americans went to such great lengths to hold onto the city during the Battle of Hue in 1968, a particularly long and brutal one. They succeeded, but the bloody scenes there went a long way towards turning public opinion in the US against the war. Some of the fiercest fighting took place at the city's Citadel, the walls of which remain pock-marked with bullets."
