"What's the story behind this hotel? Part of the world’s undying affection for Elbow Beach has largely centered around its pink sand beaches—a coral-colored hue created by tiny microorganisms that shed their red shells, which eventually become pulverized bits of rosy sand. This resort sits on one of Bermuda’s longest and most beloved stretches, indeed a beach so pristine and so very pink that if your camera still required film, it would gobble it up by the canister. If a lazy beach vacation is what you’re after—one filled with sea breezes, long walks, and romantic al fresco meals—you've come to the right place. What's the backstory? When this resort first opened in 1908, its guests were housed in the tall, butter-yellow building perched high above the beach—one that largely sits empty today. In 2009 Elbow Beach rebranded as a boutique property, shedding dozens of rooms from its inventory and redirecting efforts and cash flow to the detached, low-slung cottages dotted across the lush 50-acre property. These days, that original building is where you’ll find the main lobby, pool, and elegant lounge where you can shoot billiards and take in the hilltop view. But the bulk of your time will be spent in or near the Atlantic Ocean, since this beachfront resort couldn’t possibly be closer to one of Bermuda’s most iconic slices of pink sand. How about the rooms—what are the accommodations like, and are there any rooms we should look out for in particular? If you enjoy outdoor space then you’re in luck: The 98 rooms and suites have spacious lanai-style patios with comfy chaise lounges and either ocean or garden views. Inside, rooms are modern and well-appointed—think Nespresso machines and iHome docking stations—and many feature gorgeous bathrooms with rain showers, oversized soaking tubs, and Acqua di Parma toiletries. Some rooms simply have glassed-in showers, so if a tub is on your wish list inquire before you book. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? There's free Wi-Fi throughout the resort, and yes, it's strong enough to reach your chaise on the beach. Are there any good spots to get a bite to eat on the hotel grounds? From May through October, when it's open for business, Elbow Beach's oceanfront restaurant is one of the best spots in Bermuda to linger over breezy lunches and moonlit dinners. Called Mickey’s Bistro , the alfresco spot is about 20 yards from the surf, which means you’ll have an unending view of the turquoise coastline for the duration of your meal. Sea Breeze is another great choice; the casual tapas restaurant also overlooks the ocean. And for a special night out try Café Lido, a fine dining destination where, yes, you’re in for another stunning view of the water. How's the service? If you need another cocktail while lounging on the beach, simply pop up a small red flag that’s attached to your umbrella and a Bermuda-shorted waiter will come running over with the menu. He’s probably the same guy who brought you cool towels for your face earlier, or the gent who offered you complimentary fresh fruit a while back. It's that kind of place. What type of travelers will you find here? Babymooners here for a Zika-free tropical vacation, families with kids frolicking in the calm waters, and monied couples on their fifth visit. How about the neighborhood—how does the hotel fit into the surrounding area Centrally located in Paget Parish, the hotel is a stone’s throw from the City of Hamilton, making excursions a breeze. And if you’ve tired of strolling the pink sands right outside, many of Bermuda’s other iconic beaches (including Horseshoe Bay and Warwick Long Bay) are also nearby.
