"Give us some historical context here. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Belém Tower was built on the northern bank of the Tagus River between 1514 and 1520 by architect Francisco de Arruda. Also known as the Tower of St. Vincent, it was originally constructed to defend the city. Later, the fortress acquired new life as both a lighthouse and customs office. Who comes here? Tourists young and old, many of whom combine the tower visit with a tour of the nearby Jerónimos Monastery. No need to be a history buff to enjoy the power of this place. So what’s it actually like? Built during the reign of Manuel I, this landmark is architecturally riveting, designed in the Manueline, late Portuguese Gothic style. It’s adorned with stone fireplaces, armillary spheres, shields bearing the cross of the Order of Christ, and Venetian-inspired balcony windows, but its most striking feature is undoubtedly the rhinoceros gargoyle gracing the façade. Got it. And who do you think will most appreciate it? Those who want a visually stunning conduit into Portuguese history.
