"Absolutely gigantic, La Merced felt like a neighborhood of its own when I wandered its dense, labyrinthine stalls; the largest building is devoted to fruits and vegetables while the surrounding sections sell housewares, clothes, cleaning supplies, plastic containers, kitchen implements, tools, tinware, and much more. I loved spotting the iconic turquoise-blue metalware “peltre” spoons and cups that have been popular across Mexico since the 1930s, and could feel the market’s long history—it has been an active commercial space since before the colonial era." - Scarlett Lindeman, Lauren Stroh
