"The Barcelona Zoo was famous in the late 1960s when Snowflake, the world’s first albino gorilla, arrived for what would eventually become a 36-year residency. Today, the zoo is worth more hype than it gets. The animals are impressive—Sumatran tigers, giant tortoises, Rothschild’s giraffes, a Komodo dragon—and the enclosures are generous and well maintained. The picnic spaces are excellent, with many overlooking the animals. Go on weekends or school holidays and you can watch keepers training the African Bush elephants or feeding the penguins." - Gemma Askham
