"Tucked within the hilltop campus of the University of Coimbra, this baroque jewel of European academia was commissioned by King João V in the 18th century as a symbol of Portugal’s Enlightenment-era ambition. Behind its doors lie over 60,000 volumes, including rare 16th- and 17th-century works in medicine, law, and theology, many bound in leather and gold. Adorned interiors of exotic Brazilian wood, frescoed ceilings, and carved allegorical motifs honor the pursuit of knowledge, while a resident colony of bats protects the books from insect damage and adds to the library’s mythic aura. More than an archive, it conserves baroque art and colonial history in architectural form. Entry is ticketed in 20-minute slots, limited to 60 visitors at a time, so booking early in the day saves time." - Navya Verma
