Mira Moon

"How did it strike you on arrival?Walking through Mira Moon’s ground-floor entrance feels like arriving at a Chinoiserie-chic palace. A little bit Alice in Wonderland, the corridor is lined with gold-latticed mirrors and red egg chairs; the floors are gorgeous mosaic tile and an enormous black Chinese lantern seems to float overhead. Up on the fifth floor, the lobby keeps up the mystical atmosphere with an ornate wood-carved ceiling and crystal accents that catch the light. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Designed by Dutch guru Marcel Wanders, the interior channels China’s Mid-Autumn Festival (emphasis on the full moon, the Moon Goddess of Immortality, and a moon-hopping Jade Rabbit). The whimsical design attracts fashion bloggers, young creative types and art lovers. Expect to see guests in Diesel jeans, adult-size tutus and everything in between. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. There are 91 guest rooms and suites at Mira Moon, ranging from the 220-square-foot New Moons to the incredible 1,250-square-foot penthouse Moonshine Suite. We booked something in the middle—a 380-square-foot Half-Moon Premier, which was on the snug side but still comfortable. Highlights were funky red furniture, latticed wood Chinese doorways and a sliver of Victoria Harbour from the 29th floor. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?We wished we could have taken this king-size bed home. We loved everything about it, not least the white fireplace-like headboard, crisp sheets and fluffy pillows. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? The immaculate room had all the essentials, including a Nespresso machine to premium Chinese teas. But if we could snag anything, it’d be the in-room iPad mini. The gadget was loaded with apps to make life at the hotel a breeze; e.g. one to control the electronics and one for room service. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. What the bedrooms might lack in size, they make up for with sexy bathrooms. All-white marble combined with a feminine peony tile mosaic frame a generous tub and walk-in rain shower. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Wi-Fi is fast and ubiquitous. The hotel includes a complimentary Wi-Fi egg to take with you around town, so you always have 4G connectivity for up to 10 devices. Room service: Worth it?If you order room service at Mira Moon, you can taste-test a few of the Spanish signatures and house burgers from Supergiant Tapas & Cocktail Bar, just downstairs. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.Guests who book directly through the hotel's website will be rewarded with complimentary breakfast at Supergiant. The restaurant specializes in Spanish sharing plates during the day, but breakfast is cooked-to-order eggs and a selection of pastries and fresh juices. The adjacent open-air terrace, with its white egg chairs and astroturf, provides a nice place to unwind with an afternoon tea or a sundown cocktail. Another option for dinner and drinks is the Champagne Bar. The glittering crystal bar serves nibbles along with a two-hour free flow of Moet & Chandon Imperial, kicking off every day after 6 p.m. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay? The artistic details at the hotel—mosaic-tiled bathroom floors and lattice-wood panels—create a neo-Chinese atmosphere that makes it stand out from the crowd. Even better that the style doesn’t sacrifice functionality. Bottom line: worth it, and why?The rooms might be snug, but the larger-than-life design will win over travelers with a stylish or artsy streak. A Causeway Bay address and those sexy bathrooms will win over everyone else." - Kate Springer
