On the Grid : Little Bao

"If Chinese food mated with an American diner Little Bao would be its offspring. And a very hip baby it is too, full of good vibes and friendly staff. The interior is like a diner and small so if you're not there early be prepared to be put on a waiting list but it's worth it. The food takes the Chinese bao or fluffy white bun and fills it with untraditional ingredients. I love the pork belly bao, so succulent and full of flavor. There are also beef, szechaun fried chicken, fish tempura and vegetarian baos. There are other dishes for sharing too like the divine short ribbed pan fried dumplings and smoked eggplant. When it opened Little Bao became an overnight sensation and deservedly so. To make sure you find it look for the cute neon baby face." - Angela Ho

"As the name suggests, the focus here is on baos, i.e., Vietnamese buns filled with pork and fish, though the sides are equally compelling: There are Brussels sprouts (topped with fish sauce and fried shallots) and sambal-inflected fries, along with slabs of green tea ice cream sandwiched between deep-fried buns."

30 Best Restaurants in Hong Kong

"Little Bao oozes cool both inside and out, but you’ll be surprised at the tiny space—just about 10 seats at the bar and another 10 off to the right. Designed by Hong Kong creative Sean Dix, the tiled floors, white-tiled walls, shiny stainless steel, bar stools and pictures of vintage Hong Kong mailboxes create a modern diner vibe. Chef May Chow puts as much thought into the food as she does the atmosphere, offering delicious, creative, and very popular baos and sharing dishes. But a word of warning: Don’t visit Little Bao if you’re on any kind of diet." - Kate Springer

We had a tremendous time at Little Bao! Having discovered the restaurant in a French TV documentary, we went for dinner and Melvin was an incredible host! He gave us fantastic recommendations and took the time to talk us through the menu and was super helpful. The food was stunning, with lots of different flavours. The tasting menu was a great way to discover many dishes. Special mention for the caramel dessert bao that was delicious. The beef dumplings were beautiful, as well as the fish bao. Do yourself a favour and run to Little Bao! (The space is tiny so make sure you book in advance.

A lovely lunchtime with delicious food. Can recommend the pork belly bao, the fried chicken bao and the truffle fries were amazing. The price was HK$330.00 approx £33.00

The service here is 10/10, everyone ine was super friendly and the guy who served me was great at explaining the menu. The food was also delicious, I had the pork belly bao and pistachio ice cream bao and loved both. The restaurant is quite small so I think at busy times you would need a reservation but I went at 8:30 and was able to just walk in.

Ordered the fried chicken Bao and Brussels sprouts and they were amazing! I loved the sauce - flavourful but not overpowering, and the spicy level is very mild too so it makes the overall taste just nice. The coleslaw is interesting too - not sour but rather refreshing, so it pairs well with the black vinegar chicken. I highly recommend this place if you’re on a shopping trip around here.

A playful twist on burgers The little kid looking neon lights always catch my eye when I pass by the restaurant, so for this lunch, we decided to just go for it, and it did live up to the mental hype that has built in my head from passing by it every day. The burger buns are a special recipe that give that bouncy feeling, gives this familiar feeling of Chinese buns, but honestly a lot more chewy and like burger buns, always toasted to a crisp. As a restaurant called the little bao, they really nailed the one thing that I was expecting from them. The ingredients in the buns are also mastered in perfect harmony. Favourite has to be the pork belly, with balanced fat and meat, braised and cooked to the tender texture, with condiments that just add the sour kick to freshen up from all the oily mouthfeel of the pork. The fish was also lovely, fried to a crisp but the fish inside is still juicy. And the breading was not pre-made (I saw the toss it) and I really appreciate that. The our pleasant surprise, the sides are also very lovely too. The brussel sprouts with the sweet soy sauce is such a nice touch, made me feel like im having a ratatouille childhood moment but still keeping it fresh. Truffle fries comes with mushroom and pickled radish! Who would have thought! And the seaweed poppers are also bouncy with a crispy outside, and sesame sauce is just divine, it’s a crime that after finishing with the poppers there are still sauce left that is just thrown out because I would like to savour every drop of it. We didn’t like the dumplings so much as the other because we were expecting a more crunchy outside (after all the other ones are all so crunchy, or maybe we left it for too long), and the brisket is honestly too hard to chew while being stuff inside the dumpling whole, maybe it would be better if it is pulled before putting inside the dumpling. But the desert, an ice cream sandwich between the fried and sweetened version of the little bao buns. Honestly it made so much sense that ice cream would be perfect for fried mantou but seriously it’s the first time I have had it like this. And boy are they not stingy with their ice cream. Ten out of ten. The place is a little crowded if it is full house, but the time that we went it wasn’t too packed. I appreciate the open kitchen but I assume that it wouldn’t be too friendly with a large crowd. Overall, I think I just fell in love with a new restaurant and I cant wait tell all my friend and have to go with me again.

Their newly launched menu exclusively available only for this summer, their new dishes embark on a sun-drenched culinary journey inspired by Hong Kong’s classics, Mediterranean bright flavors, and Southeast Asian zest; highlighting 𝐇𝐊 𝐒𝐓𝐘𝐋𝐄 𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐊 𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐏 𝐁𝐀𝐎 (𝐇𝐊$𝟏𝟑𝟖), a hearty tribute to Hong Kong’s beloved baked pork chop rice, featuring a generous Kagoshima pork chop slab grilled over high heat to achieve a caramelized crust while preserving its juicy, rosy-pink tenderness on the inside, layered with a zingy tomato ssamjang, a molten blanket of cheese, and five-spice pineapple chutney for a mouthful of satisfaction.

The drinks were amazing, the food was very good. The bao was a bit too cakey for me - I was expecting something a bit closer to the hirata buns at ippudo nyc. But the flavors were great and they had their own homemade hot sauce which was nice. The shrimp tacos were shrimp fried dumplings with a guacamole sauce. It wasn't what I was expecting but they were excellent.
