"How did it strike you on arrival? It's not quite in the mainstream tourist or business area you'd expect for an international luxury brand, but this busy InterContinental's location in the heart of Singapore's Malay-influenced Kampong Glam neighborhood offers some unique benefits. Like a close connection to the rich Malay and Peranakan cultures, which influence much of the design here. The sumptuous lobby is a treat for the eyes, with heritage tiling and a gorgeous high-ceilinged lounge area dripping with opulent glass chandeliers. What’s the crowd like?Plenty of families, culture vultures and local staycationers, thanks to the hotel’s accessibility (it’s right above the Bugis MRT station and Bugis Junction mall) and proximity to the hip and historic Haji Lane and Arab Street shophouse precinct. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.My Heritage Suite came with its own living room and design touches like Peranakan ceramics. What was really special was the private balcony beyond louvered doors that looked into the Bugis Junction mall – great for people-watching. It’s almost as if you’re living in a stylish heritage shophouse. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?The mattress was on the soft side, but your head is in for a treat – there’s a seven-pillow menu from sleep specialists Park & Morgan. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that worth a mention?Loved the cultural references in the décor, like the Peranakan ceramics and artwork, and a wall that resembled an Oriental folding screen – they really gave the room personality. I'd steal it all if I could! The mini-bar was made extra special with truffle cashews and the option of ordering French truffles from Chocolat Mathez. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. His and hers sinks, monochrome tiling, rather narrow bathtub and separate walk-in shower. Decent water pressure. Not a fan of the cheap-looking pendant lamp. The products were steal-worthy – from Agraria and scented with perk-me-up lemon verbena. We all need some good Wi-Fi. What’s the word on that?Fast and free. Anything stand out about other services and features? The lobby lounge is a popular place for high tea. But for a suitably Peranakan treat, head to the no-frills HarriAnns Nonya Table in the adjoining mall for awesome kueh (Peranakan desserts). What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?Memorable: Exploring the hipster hangout of Haji Lane – then retiring to the room to chill out in the private balcony and people-watch away from the crowds. Bottom line: worth it?It’s a truly immersive experience in the melting pot of cultures that is Singapore. You’ll be hanging where the locals do." - Audrey Phoon
