"How did it strike you on arrival? The ancient stone walls of this 17th-century monastery-turned boutique hotel are quintessential Umbria. A member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, the space mixes modern furnishings with Renaissance paintings, Flemish tapestries, and majolica pottery. Nice. What’s the crowd like? This charming corner of Italy doesn't get a ton of American travelers, so those who do come here have likely visited the country's most well-known destinations and are looking for something different. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.Standard rooms are a bit on the small side but come equipped with all the necessary conveniences. Some rooms have lovely views of the surrounding hills and town. The sleek and modern furnishings are a nice contrast with the historic architecture. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?The bed was comfortable; nothing out of the ordinary. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. The bathroom was pretty standard; nothing to write home about. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Wifi is free and the signal is quite good. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.The elegant Nicolao Restaurant serves Umbrian specialties (including several dishes with a generous helping of fresh shaved truffles) in a space that marries the hotel's traditional architecture with modern art and furniture. The excellent spa is a major draw, with a pool and hydromassage area comprising various tubs and jacuzzis with mineral-rich waters. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?A five-star grand dame on par with Rome's best hotels this is not, but it is one of the best options in Umbria. Between the historic architecture, the excellent restaurant, and relaxing spa, it's a lovely place to stay. Bottom line: worth it, and why?The price is quite reasonable for a hotel of this quality and in this location, a short drive from the historic center of the charming Umbrian town of Gubbio."
